Upcoming Openings: Famous Deli, Il Casale, Tupelo, Friendly Toast, Trina's Starlight Lounge

With the economy in tatters, it would seem that about the only changes within the Boston restaurant scene would be closings of dining spots, but this is not quite the case. Indeed, a number of highly-anticipated restaurant openings are on the horizon, including several that we mention below. (Thanks to Zagat Buzz, Wicked Local, the Boston Herald, and Chowhound for helping us learn more about a few of these.)

Famous Deli, North End.
This looks to be a sandwich spot on Cross Street near Hanover and Salem Streets at the beginning of the North End (where the Central Artery used to be). The owner of Strega, a popular Italian eatery in the North End, will also be heading up this spot, which should be open in May.

Il Casale, Belmont.
The owner of Dante in Cambridge will be opening another Italian restaurant, this one on Leonard Street in Belmont. Il Casale will likely lean toward upscale Italian cuisine, and it will reside in a renovated firehouse in the center of town. The exact opening date is unknown, but it looks as if it will definitely be open sometime this spring.

Tupelo, Cambridge.
Described on their Twitter page as "comfort food with a Southern flair," Tupelo will be opening on Cambridge Street in Inman Square, perhaps as early as April, in the spot where Magnolia's Southern Cuisine used to be.

Friendly Toast, Cambridge.
A restaurant in Portsmouth, NH, that features unique homemade breakfasts, Friendly Toast will be opening a new location in the Kendall Square section of Cambridge. The last we heard, they are hoping to open sometime in April at 1 Kendall Square.

Trina's Starlight Lounge, Cambridge.
Yet another new restaurant coming to Cambridge, Trina's Starlight Lounge promises to also be another Southern-style dining spot in the Inman Square section of the city. It will be housed in the old Abbey Lounge Spot on Beacon Street near the Somerville border. Trina's probably won't be open until sometime in the summer.

Latest Review: Ristorante Serena, Malden

The latest review on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants Web site is for Ristorante Serena, an Italian restaurant in Malden. Located in the Maplewood Square section of the city near the Revere border, Ristorante Serena is a charming and romantic little spot with just a handful of tables in its dining room. The menu features mostly Southern Italian food, including all kinds of seafood and pasta dishes as well as a variety of steak, chicken, and veal entrees. Blue Ox to Open Soon in Lynn

Downtown Lynn will soon be home to the Blue Ox, a casual family restaurant. The Blue Ox will be moving into the space on Oxford Street that was formerly occupied by the Downtown Bistro, and before that, the Oxford Street Grill.

According to the restaurant's Web site, the executive chef and partner of the Blue Ox Bistro (Matt O’Neil) has worked at such top Boston restaurants as Prezza and No. 9 Park. The site also has a menu up, showing such items as tomato and corn bruschetta, pasta fagioli, a fried haddock sandwich, tagliatelle bolognese, grilled swordfish, and veal saltimbocca.

Cafe 47 Opens in the Back Bay

A new cafe has just opened up in the old Despina's pizza place at Mass. Ave. and Marlborough Street in the Back Bay of Boston. The dining spot, which is called Cafe 47, will be open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and will be featuring everything from breakfast sandwiches, salads, and paninis to Italian entrees and pizza.

Something Savory in Arlington to Close Restaurant; Catering to Remain Open

Arlington is about to lose a very highly-rated restaurant, though fortunately the business is not going completely away.

Something Savory, a Caribbean-influenced dining spot in Arlington Heights, will be closing the restaurant end of their business on Saturday, March 28. According to an email sent by the restaurant owner, the catering end of Something Savory will remain open and become the main focus of the business, making food for everything from weddings and corporate events to graduation parties.

Teele Square Cafe Opens in Somerville

Soleil Cafe in the Teele Square section of Somerville may be gone, but a new cafe opens in its spot today.

The Teele Square Cafe opened its doors to the public this morning on Broadway in the heart of Somerville's Teele Square. According to a post by the folks running the cafe on Chowhound and a similar post on Yelp, the chef and co-owner of the new cafe used to be the chef and owner of the 2nd Street Cafe in East Cambridge and was also an executive chef at the Aquitaine French Bistro in the South End of Boston. Homemade soups, salads, sandwiches, and other items will be offered, and there will be an espresso bar as well as homemade desserts.

Great Thai Chef in Somerville to be Replaced by Ronnarong Thai Tapas Bar to Open Soon

Great Thai Chef, a little-known but well-received Thai restaurant in the Union Square section of Somerville, has temporarily closed its doors after about 10 years of being in business. According to Zagat Buzz, the chef and owner of Great Thai chef will be opening Ronnarong Thai Tapas Bar in the same space sometime in April. Zagat mentions that the lunch menu at Ronnarong Thai Tapas Bar will remain similar to that of Great Thai Chef, but the dinner menu will undergo changes, including the addition of tapas, or small plates.

The location of the now-closed Great Thai Chef and the soon-to-open Ronnarong Thai Tapas Bar is 255 Washington Street in the Union Square section of Somerville (in the plaza area).

Review: Border Cafe, Burlington

After some fairly last-minute planning a few of us got over to The Border Cafe in Burlington last weekend. This is the newest branch of the small chain of Tex-Mex/Cajun restaurants to open in Massachusetts (the other two being in Cambridge and Saugus, with others in New Jersey and Delaware), and it appears to be a huge success. Crowded nearly every night and packed on weekends, this is one of the few restaurants around that seems to be flourishing in this bad economy.

Although my dining companions had been to this location of the Border Cafe several times, this was my first trip here, and I was impressed by the atmosphere (especially for a chain). The old-looking wooden floors, colorful lights, and posters and memorabilia gave it the feel of a roadhouse in Texas or a Cajun juke joint, though it is just kitschy enough to continually remind folks that, yes, this is indeed a chain, though more of a local one than anything.

Upon arriving, we were brought to a table toward the back in an area that was just a shade quieter than the main room (and away from the bustling bar area), and started off with drinks and appetizers. I had a rich and flavorful gumbo soup with lots of chunks of chicken and andouille sausage, which made up for my initial disappointment that they were out of crawfish popcorn. Our meals soon arrived, and they were mostly decent; two of my dining companions ordered a terrific Gulf Coast seafood enchilada plate (enchiladas filled sauteed shrimp, crawfish, and poblano pepper jack cheese, all smothered in a Cajun crabmeat and cheese sauce). I ordered a combo plate consisting of cheese enchiladas and a shredded beef taco. The enchiladas were rather dried out and crunchy at the ends, and the flour taco was a bit limp and flimsy. The fillings were tasty, however, and the rice and beans on the side were pretty good.

Service was excellent from start to finish, as our waitress kept checking back with us even though the place was so crowded. And prices? Well, I almost did a double-take when I saw what they were charging for food at the Border Cafe, but in a good way; my combo dish, for instance, was only about $7.00, which is an absolute steal even when you're talking about basic, no-frills dinners like this one.

So will the Border Cafe make me stop going to Angela's Cafe in East Boston or Taqueria Mexico in Waltham for Mexican food? Well, no, simply because the food at those places is made from scratch using family recipes with typically outstanding results. But the food at the Border Cafe seems to be a little better than your average chain, and the fact that they offer Cajun food in an area that is completely lacking in this type of cuisine certainly helps make a case for going here. Foodies may disagree with me on this, but I think that the Border Cafe is a decent addition to the northern suburbs of Boston.

Taste Quincy Restaurant Week, March 22 to March 27, 2009

Boston is not the only city in the area that is hosting a restaurant week event right now. The city of Quincy is having an event called Taste Quincy Restaurant Week. It started yesterday (March 22) and will be going until Friday (March 27).

Several options are available during Quincy's restaurant week, including lunch for two for either $10 or $15, and dinner for two for either $20 or $30. Restaurants serving lunch for two for $10 include such dining spots as La Paloma, the Granite Street Cafe, and Beachside Johnny's. Restaurants serving lunch for two for $15 include Captain Fishbones, Eatin' Healthy, Fuji, Shabu, and several others. Restaurants serving dinner for two for $20 include Burke's Seafood, Firefly's, Timeout Pizza, and a few others. Restaurants serving dinner for two for $30 include Cela's, Terra Brasilis, Siro's, and a handful of others. There are other special deals at Babycakes, the Coffee Break Cafe, Edible Arrangements, Fratelli's, Ginger Betty's, Gypsy Kitchen, and Montillio's.

Bella Luna and Milky Way Lounge on Their Way to New Location

Bella Luna and The Milky Way Lounge have now left their original spot on Centre Street in the heart of Jamaica Plain. They closed up over the weekend, and had a parade through this quirky Boston neighborhood in celebration of their moving to a new location at the Brewery Complex on nearby Amory Street. They will be opening up at the new location sometime in early April.

The Milky Way Lounge will no longer be offering bowling at the new location, but they will have Skee-Ball and other games.

James Hook and Company Up for Sale

James Hook and Company, a Boston seafood wholesaler and retailer that was destroyed by fire last May but continued operations in temporary digs at the site, is apparently up for sale.

According to the Boston Globe and several other media sources, the family that owns the seafood place is looking to sell the property, though it is still unknown whether they will stay at the present site.

The Globe mentions that ten developers have put in proposals for construction projects at the James Hook site, which is located at 15 Northern Avenue by the pedestrian bridge that goes over the Fort Point Channel along Boston's waterfront.

Taqueria Tapatio in Somerville Has Reopened

Thanks to an emailer for alerting us to the fact that Taqueria Tapatio in East Somerville has reopened, more than two years after being destroyed in a fire. The Broadway restaurant had received mostly positive reviews for its Mexican and El Salvadoran cuisine until the fire hit in November of 2006.

According to a poster on Chowhound, Tapatio apparently opened their doors about two weeks ago.

Taqueria Tapatio is located at 82 Broadway in East Somerville, about midway between the McGrath Highway and Route 93.

Latest Review: Cafe Venice, Norwood

The latest review on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants Web site is for an Italian restaurant and bar in South Norwood called Cafe Venice. Located on Washington Street in the heart of this working-class section of town, Cafe Venice is a local townie joint that consists of a dining area in the front and a bar area in the back. Capri Restaurant and Wine Bar Opens in Braintree

A new dining spot called Capri Restaurant and Wine Bar opened last Thursday (March 12) on Union Street in Braintree. Capri is located in the spot where Bickford's used to be (near the rotary where Union Street intersects with Route 3) and features a mix of Northern Italian and Southern Italian cuisine, including chicken parm sliders, stuffed Italian sausage, glazed skirt steak, veal marsala, tortellini macaroni and cheese, and pizza. Capri also has a children's menu.

Tavern in the Square to Open in Salem

Tavern in the Square, a casual restaurant and bar which already has a couple of locations in Cambridge, will soon be opening another spot, this time in Salem. The exact date of its opening is not known at this point, but it should be sometime this spring.

According to a Salem News article from last year, the restaurant may be opening in the old Salem News building on Washington Street in the center of the city.

The other two Tavern in the Square locations are both on Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge, with one being in Central Square and the other being in Porter Square.

Great Taste Bakery and Restaurant Opens in Chinatown

A new Chinese dining spot has opened in the Chinatown neighborhood of Boston. Great Taste Bakery and Restaurant had a "grand opening" sign posted above their door earlier this week, and it seemed to be fully up and running. The restaurant is on Beach Street in the heart of Chinatown, across the street from such dining spots as the Gourmet Dumpling House and the Taiwan Cafe.

Maria Bonita in North Cambridge Has Closed

Over the past couple of weeks, there have been some posts on various Web sites about Maria Bonita in North Cambridge apparently closing. After taking a drive over there today, we can say that this is indeed the case. As the photo shows here, the inside of this family-owned Mexican restaurant has been gutted, with no sign of what might be happening with the spot.

Maria Bonita was located at 2447 Massachusetts Avenue in North Cambridge, near the Alewife Brook Parkway and the Arlington border.

Boston Restaurant Week (Winter 2009) to Begin on March 15

Boston Restaurant Week is back once again, this time as a slightly revamped event that includes a two-course prix-fixe lunch menu option as well as lunch and/or dinner offerings at some restaurants on Saturday, March 21.

The event will be held from Sunday, March 15 to Friday, March 20, and again from Sunday, March 22 to Friday, March 27. As noted above, some restaurants will also be participating in Boston Restaurant Week on Saturday, March 21. Three-course prix-fixe lunches will cost $20.09, while three-course prix-fixe dinners will cost $33.09. The new two-course prix-fixe lunches will cost $15.09.

Some of the best (and most popular) restaurants in the Boston area will be participating in Boston Restaurant Week, including Davio's, Asana, Solea, Bricco, Tangierino, Masona Grill, Turner Seafood, and Harvest.

Stephi's on Tremont Is Now Open

A new restaurant with a vaguely familiar name has come to the South End. According to Thrillist Boston, Stephi's on Tremont is now open for business in the Tremont Street space on that used to be home to the Garden of Eden, a comfort food restaurant that closed in May of 2008. Stephi's on Tremont is the sister restaurant of Stephanie's on Newbury, a popular upscale restaurant that has been serving diners since 1994.

Lastest Review: Nicholas Restaurant, Natick

The latest review on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants Web site is for Nicholas Restaurant, a Greek dining spot on Route 135, just east of Natick Center. Nicholas Restaurant is a spacious, comfortable dining spot that started out as a drive-in back in the late 1970s, but is now a full-service restaurant with a variety of Greek-American and traditional Greek dishes. The restaurant is a good spot for families and large groups, and a function room in the back can be used for special events. More Restaurant News: Pho House, UBurger, Pressed Sandwiches, Lansdowne Pub

Two more restaurants have just opened in the Boston area (thanks again to Chowhound posters for these) and two others will be opening soon.

The two dining spots that recently opened include Pho House, a Vietnamese restaurant that took over Thai Kitchen on Massachusetts Avenue in North Cambridge, and a second UBurger that is located on Commonwealth Avenue on the edge of Allston near Boston University.

The two restaurants that will be opening soon are Pressed Sandwiches, one of a chain of sandwich places that will be opening at One Beacon Street in downtown Boston early next week, and the Lansdowne Pub, an Irish pub that will be opening on Lansdowne Street across from Fenway Park sometime in April.

A new dining-based blog has come to the Boston restaurant scene, and the person who started it may have a familiar moniker to some. MC Slim JB is restaurant reviewer for a number of publications and also an active contributor to such sites as Chowhound and Yelp. Upcoming Openings: Boston Burger Company, Chito's, Pollo Campero

Despite the struggling economy, a number of new restaurants are getting ready to open in the Boston area. One place that is on the verge of opening is the Boston Burger Company, a burger joint that will be setting up shop in the Davis Square section of Somerville, in the spot formerly housing Antonio's. Another restaurant coming soon (thanks to a Chowhound poster for bringing this one up) is a place called Pollo Campero, which is part of a Latin American chain of dining spots and will be opening on Park Street in Chelsea (in the downtown area). Finally, a restaurant called Chito's will be opening in Mattapan Square at the intersection of River Street and Blue Hill Avenue near the Milton line (no word on what type of cuisine Chito's will be featuring).

Latest Review: Imari Fusion Restaurant, Winchester

The latest review on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants Web site is for a Thai, Japanese, and Korean restaurant in Winchester called Imari Fusion Restaurant. Located alongside a courtyard on a side street in the center of Winchester, Imari is a quiet, comfortable place with three distinct rooms and an interesting and varied menu. Steve's in Arlington to be Replaced by Elton's

Steve's House of Pizza, a sub shop and pizza joint that has been a fixture in Arlington Center for many years, is being replaced by a new takeout spot called Elton's Roast Beef and Pizza. Steve's had been a popular place for takeout among both local workers in Arlington Center and high schoolers from up the street, with a variety of subs, pizzas, and calzones, in addition to a few Middle Eastern dishes such as falafel.

Elton's Roast Beef and Pizza looks to be on the verge of opening; we will update this page when they do officially open their doors. Three Aces in Cambridge Closes

Three Aces Pizza, a sub shop and pizza place located between Porter Square and Harvard Square in Cambridge, has shut down. According to the Cambridge Chronicle and Wicked Local, this late-night favorite among the bar crowd apparently had to close its doors because Harvard University is expanding into this block (the building is owned by Harvard Real Estate). The newspaper went on to say that the former owner of Three Aces stated he was forced to close by the university when they did not renew his lease.
