Whole Foods Market Is Opening in Boston's South End

A national chain of supermarkets that focuses on natural and organic foods is coming to the South End of Boston.

The Boston Herald reports that Whole Foods Market will be opening in the "Ink Block" development between Albany Street and Harrison Avenue (where the Boston Herald newspaper used to be), with the 50,000-square-foot shop being the largest market in Boston, and the first full-sized grocery store in the South End. The article mentions that the new Whole Foods will be the anchor of the upcoming development, which will include residential properties, office space, and businesses (including dining spots) as well as upgrades to roadways and sidewalks. It looks like the supermarket will have an outdoor sidewalk cafe area as well as a gelato bar and a wine shop within the store.

The Ink Block project will have two phases on construction, with an anticipated completion around 2016. Whole Foods should be open sometime in 2014.

[January 5, 2015 update: According to a sign displayed at the Ink Block site, the new Whole Foods is opening this Friday (January 9).]
