News Elsewhere: The Shawmut Diner in New Bedford to Close March 31

A landmark diner on the South Coast is going to be closing its doors for good.

The New Bedford Guide is reporting that the Shawmut Diner in New Bedford will shut down on March 31 after being in business for more than 33 years. The article mentions that a note on the diner's Facebook page says "Yes it's true…We hope to see many of you in the next week, I already stocked up on kleenex. You will be in our hearts forever! Hugs & kisses, Celeste & Phil xoxoxo."

According to the article, the diner, which was built in 1953 and is included in the National Register of Historic Places, is going to be placed into storage, with a location of Cumberland Farms moving into the space. An article on the WBSM site indicates that the Shawmut Diner could be sold and moved to another space, while a post from the diner on Facebook says that they are looking for a new home, but it is not known at this point in time exactly what the plans are for it.

The address for this soon-to-close diner in New Bedford is: Shawmut Diner, 943 Shawmut Avenue, New Bedford, MA, 02746.
