The Cornerstone Pub and Restaurant in South Boston Is Closing; Being Replaced by Apartments

It looks like a South Boston bar that has been around for approximately 35 years may be torn down in order to make room for apartments.

Boston Magazine is reporting that the owners of The Cornerstone Pub and Restaurant on W Broadway have let the Boston Redevelopment Authority know that they plan to close the watering hole and possibly have it replaced with 47 residential units or more, along with parking and commercial space that would include room for a restaurant on the ground floor. The article mentions that the Letter of Intent filed for the proposal says there have been "positive initial meetings" with neighborhood associations in the West Broadway and St. Vincent/Lower End areas, though it is not known whether other neighborhood groups in Southie will be as supportive of the plans.

[March 2, 2015 update: According to an email from Boston City Councilor At-Large Michael Flaherty, The Cornerstone Pub is getting ready to close its doors and will be having its final St. Patrick's Day kick-off celebration on March 5, though the bar will remain open until at least St. Patrick's Day.]

[March 18, 2015 update: A Facebook post from the bar indicates that The Cornerstone Pub will remain open into April, with its farewell party taking place on Saturday, April 18.]

[May 15, 2015 update: Universal Hub mentions that proposed residential building that will be replacing the old Cornerstone space will include a gym with a pool, a film screening room, and a "contemporary, sophisticated urban terrace" that has a dog park section.]

[September 29, 2015 update: A Twitter post put up this morning indicates that The Cornerstone Pub is being demolished today.]

The Cornerstone was initially home to a spot called the Broadway Tunnel Cafe that was established in 1939. The current owners gave the place its current name when it was purchased in the late 1970s, according to Boston Magazine.

The address for The Cornerstone Pub and Restaurant is 16 W Broadway, Boston, MA, 02127.

Thanks to Universal Hub for bringing this to our attention.
