The Avenue Bar and Grille in Allston May Become The Surf

It looks like a longtime Allston watering hole may become a new spot.

According to a licensing board page within  the city of Boston website, The Avenue Bar and Grille on Commonwealth Avenue is petitioning to change its name to The Surf, and it appears that it will remain under the same ownership. The person behind the The Avenue--Doug Bacon--purchased the bar from its original owners approximately four years ago, and he also runs Harry's Bar & Grill and The Last Drop in Brighton as well as the White Horse Tavern in Allston.

It is not yet known what changes will be made if the city approves the changeover to The Surf; as soon as we find out more, we will post an update here.

[December 17 update: Universal Hub reports that Doug Bacon is indeed planning to turn The Avenue into a new spot called The Surf, which would have a Southern California beach bar concept and would feature tacos and more.]

The Avenue first opened in the late 1990s, with the place being Arbuckles and at least a couple of other bars before that.

The address for The Avenue/The Surf is 1249 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02134.
