Amrheins in South Boston May Be Going Up for Sale

by Marc Hurwitz

A South Boston institution that has been in business for nearly 130 years is apparently going on the market.

According to an article in The Real Reporter, the site on West Broadway where Amrheins resides is going up for sale, with Newmark Capital Markets Managing Director Thomas D. Greeley saying that "All of the other sites around there have been already pulled off the market [via sales], and this is now one of the best available." Greeley, who calls the Amrheins property a "a marquee development site," notes that West Broadway and A Street are "two of Boston’s most dynamic corridors" and that the site will be positioned well for "multiple future development scenarios." The parcel, which would presumably include both the Amrheins building and the adjacent parking lot, could fetch close to $20 million, according to the post.

Amrheins, which first opened in 1890 in the Lower End of Southie, is known in part for its hand-carved bar which is the oldest such bar in the entire country; over the years, the restaurant has also known as a place frequented by local politicians. (Caught in Southie says in an article about the potential sale that it is the oldest restaurant and bar in all of South Boston.)

The address for Amrheins is 80 West Broadway, South Boston, MA, 02127. Its website can be found at http://amrheinsboston.com/
