Tropical Diner to Replace Phinix Grill in Belmont

by Marc Hurwitz

A Mediterranean restaurant in the western suburbs has shut down, and it looks like the space will become home to a diner once again.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Phinix Grill in Belmont is now closed, with a sign out front saying that the Trapelo Road space will become home to a spot called Tropical Diner. A Zoning Board of Appeals application page indicates that the new eatery will focus on American fare and comfort food, with such items as pancakes, waffles, French toast, omelets, wraps, burgers, club sandwiches, fried fish, and more offered. It appears that Tropical Diner could be opening sometime in February, though no specific opening date has been given as of yet.

Phinix Grill first opened in Belmont in the fall of 2015, taking over the space where Sweet Peach Diner had been, and before that, Andros Diner, which had been in business for more than 30 years.

The address for the now-closed Phinix Grill (and the new Tropical Diner) is 628 Trapelo Road (Route 60), Belmont, MA, 02478.

[March 6 update: A poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook page states that Tropical Diner appears to be open, with a Facebook post from the restaurant confirming that it indeed has its grand opening today.]
