Review: Kebab Factory, Somerville

Now that Classic India in Quincy is closed, the Kebab Factory in Somerville is one of maybe two or three restaurants vying for my personal number 1 spot for Indian restaurants in the Boston area. And after heading back there last night (this time with a large group), the place did nothing to change my mind.

We were seated in the back of the restaurant, which has an almost trendy vibe to it with colorful lights throughout the place and a modern, industrial feel. Our servers brought over free cups of garlic potato soup (excellent), and shortly thereafter we ordered a number of appetizers, including lamb samosas, vegetable samosas, and peshawary naan (leavened bread with nuts and raisins). The samosas were good but not any better than what I've had at other Indian restaurants, but the naan was outstanding, with the nuts and raisins adding a nice texture to the bread.

We were soon served our main entrees, which included chicken tikka masala (about the best I've tried anywhere, except perhaps Punjabi Dhaba just down the street), chicken saag (very nice, but not quite as good as last time I had it there), and lamb kebabs (a big hit at our table).

Beers were generally excellent, including the barley-heavy Kingfisher, which I stuck with most of the night.

Prices were about right for what we ordered, with the average cost being about $35 per person, including drinks.

Service was just about flawless, with a number of different people waiting on us throughout the night.

Overall, Kebab Factory greatly impressed once again. Other than perhaps India Quality in Kenmore Square and Shanti in Dorchester, I'd be hard-pressed to think of an Indian restaurant in the Boston area that I enjoy more.

Latest Review: McKay's, Quincy

The latest review on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants Web site is for a breakfast and lunch spot in South Quincy called McKay's. Located in a rather plain-looking building at a busy intersection on Franklin Street across from the historic Adams House (and about midway between Quincy Center and the Braintree line), McKay's is an unpretentious, friendly neighborhood spot that has all kinds of breakfast items, as well as a handful of meals for lunch. Forty Carrots Coming to Bloomingdale's, Chestnut Hill

The Bloomingdale's department store will soon be bringing its popular Forty Carrots restaurant to their Chestnut Hill Mall location.

Forty Carrots, an in-store dining spot which first opened in 1975 in the 59th Street Bloomingdale's store in Manhattan, will feature mostly healthy foods, including a variety of breads, soups, sandwiches, and salads, as well as their trademark frozen yogurt.

Bloomingdale's started out in 1872 in the Lower East Side of New York, moving to its flagship location on 59th Street in 1886. Today, it an upscale division of Macy's that has about 40 store locations throughout the country.

Max and Dylans Opens in City Square, Charlestown

A second Max and Dylans has opened in the City Square section of Charlestown. It is located where Copia and Meze Estiatorio used to be, at the intersection of Rutherford Avenue (where it becomes North Washington Street) and Chelsea Street.

The menu at Max and Dylans includes some interesting dishes such as miniature beef wellington puff pastries, chicken sliders, rock shrimp macaroni and cheese, filet mignon sandwiches, seared duck flatbreads, and Kobe meatloaf.

The original Max and Dylans is located on West Street in downtown Boston, just off of Boston Common.

Brown Sugar (Jersey Street location) to Close

Thanks to posters on Chowhound for reminding us about the imminent closing of the original Brown Sugar location on Jersey Street in the Fenway neighborhood of Boston.

This news had been made public by the restaurant back in November, with a note on their site stating that "it has been a pleasure serving you at the Brown Sugar Cafe in Fenway over the past 10 years" and that "we will continue to offer your favorite dishes at Brown Sugar Cafe on Comm. Ave....and The Similans [in Cambridge]."

Both of the Brown Sugar Cafes have been among Boston's most popular Thai restaurants, in the Boston area over the past decade or so.. We're glad to hear that they will continue to operate the second location on Commonwealth Avenue as well as the lesser-known Similans.

Chipotle Coming to Norwood, Woburn

Chipotle Mexican Grill, a fast-growing chain of restaurants that features mainly tacos and burritos, is increasing their presence in the Boston area. Two new Chipotle restaurants are coming to the area, with one in Norwood and the other in Woburn. They should both be open by the end of 2008 or early in 2009.

The Chipotle in Norwood will be located on Route 1 (just north of the Dean Street exit), while the Chipotle in Woburn will be located on Commerce Way (a little north of the Woburn Mall).

As we hear more on the pending openings of both Chipotle restaurants, we will post additional updates...

Masa Southwest Bar and Grill in Woburn is Open

A new restaurant has just opened in Woburn. Masa Southwest Bar and Grill has opened its doors in the Horn Pond Plaza on Route 3 (in the same shopping plaza as Whole Foods) just north of the Winchester line.

The restaurant is upscale but casual, and features mostly Southwestern-style cuisine including chicken with black bean and mango salsa, pork shoulder with borracha sauce, grilled catfish with verde sauce, tequila marinated shrimp, and chipotle apricot glazed short ribs.

Sensing (Guy Martin's New Restaurant) Opening Soon in the North End

It appears that Guy Martin's new restaurant will finally be opening in the North End.

Sensing, a high-end restaurant run by the renowned French chef, will likely be opening sometime in January 2009, according to the Boston Globe. The hotel that will house the restaurant--the Fairmont Battery Wharf--is now open, with Sensing soon to follow. According to the Globe, Guy Martin's new restaurant will feature dishes that include seasonal New England ingredients, and the restaurant will have an open kitchen as well as outdoor seating during the warmer months.

Guy Martin is considered by many to be one of the top chefs in France, and has won numerous awards, including receiving three stars by The Michelin Guide in 2000.

Latest Review: Genki Ya, Brookline

The latest review on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants Web site is for Genki Ya, a Japanese restaurant and sushi bar in Brookline. Genki Ya, which is located on Harvard Avenue between Coolidge Corner and the Allston neighborhood of Boston, is a tiny restaurant that is brightly lit and clean inside. Both the sushi and the entrees are outstanding, and all of the food at this friendly little dining spot is made with organic ingredients. A New House of Siam Opens on Tremont Street in Boston

Tremont Street in the South End of Boston is now home to a new Thai restaurant that has a familiar name. House of Siam has just opened a new location a few blocks from the original on Columbus Avenue. The new House of Siam is much smaller than the original (which remains open), and the menu is a bit smaller.

Port Tavern, a New Irish Pub, Is Coming to Newburyport

State Street in Newburyport will once again have an Irish pub.

The Port Tavern will be moving into the spot where Rosie O'Shea's used to be in the center of this historic seaport near the New Hampshire border. The pub may be open as early as late January, though the Daily News of Newburyport mentions that the owners may be looking at early February for opening.

According to the Daily News, the Port Tavern will have a modern look with an open floor plan, and the seating will be upgraded. The atmosphere will be a bit different from the former Rosie O'Shea's, which was more of an old-fashioned watering hole with a dark, cozy feel and basic bench seating.

Poll: Effect of Proposed Toll Increase on East Boston Restaurants

With sharp toll increases planned for the Boston Harbor tunnels (from $3.50 to $7.00), there is a growing debate as to how these increases might affect East Boston businesses, including the many restaurants located in the neighborhood.

As arguments for and against a toll hike continue, we have decided to set up an informal poll to take a tally about the affect, if any, that the hike would have on East Boston restaurants. Latest Review: Rufful's Restaurant, Providence, RI

The latest review on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants Web site is for a diner in the Wayland Square section of Providence, RI, called Rufful's Restaurant. Rufful's is a simple, basic greasy spoon joint that serves breakfast and lunch to residents and visitors of this wealthy neighborhood on the East Side of Providence. Boston's Cigar Bars in Danger of Closing

Depending on the outcome of the Boston Health Commission vote this week, cigar bars in Boston may be forced to close.

According to WBZ TV, the Boston Health Commission is going to be voting on whether to shut down all cigar bars and hookah bars. If the vote passes, these bars will have to close within the next five years.

Wingstop to Open Two Locations in Boston

Wingstop, a popular national chicken wing chain, may be opening two restaurants in the Boston area.

According to the USA Today Franchise Ownership Center, the company has signed franchise agreements with former Dallas Cowboy and New York Giant lineman Ron Stone to develop two Wingstop locations in Boston. USA Today also mentions that the chain looks to open up to 75 locations in the Northeast within the next five years.

Wingstop, which started in 1994, features nine flavors of wings, from "mild" to "atomic." They also feature boneless strips with the same flavor options.

Latest Review: Pescatore, Somerville

The latest review on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants Web site is for Pescatore, an Italian seafood restaurant in Somerville. Located on a side street in the Ball Square neighborhood of the city, Pescatore is a bit tough to find, but is an attractive little spot with both a dining room and a takeout area. Prices are very reasonable, and much of the items on the menu are made from scratch. Specialties include a variety of seafood entrees, as well as pasta, chicken, veal, and steak dishes. Update: Ghazal in Jamaica Plain Is Open

Ghazal Fine Indian Cuisine is now open. Thanks to one of our posters (as well as the folks at Chowhound) for letting us know.

Ghazal is located at 711 Centre Street in Jamaica Plain where Cafe D used to be.

California Pizza Kitchen Opening Soon in Wellesley

California Pizza Kitchen, a national chain of restaurants that specializes in California-style cuisine, will soon be opening a new location in the Linden Square section of Wellesley.

The new California Pizza kitchen is starting to look for workers, so it appears that it will be open shortly in Wellesley. As soon as the restaurant does open, we will post an update on this site.

California Pizza Kitchen, which opened its first restaurant in 1985, currently has more than 240 restaurants in operation.

Lavender Asian Cuisine and Bar Opens in Sudbury

A new restaurant has come to Sudbury. Lavender Asian Cuisine and Bar, a Pan-Asian dining spot, opened last week in the Sudbury Plaza on Route 20.

According to Wicked Local, the Sudbury Town Crier, and the Metrowest Daily News, Lavender features a variety of Asian cuisine, including dishes found in China, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Japan. The newspaper also mentions that everything is made fresh daily, and no MSG is used.

Fire Closes Cafe Belo in Allston

Cafe Belo, a Brazilian dining spot in the Allston neighborhood of Boston, is closed for the forseeable future after a fire heavily damaged the restaurant on Friday morning. According to the Boston Globe, the fire caused about $350,000 in damage to the building, which is located at 181 Brighton Avenue.

Cafe Belo first opened in the neighborhood in 1997 and grew into a small chain of restaurants, including one in Somerville and another in Framingham. (There is another location in Curitiba, Brazil.) The restaurant features a self-service buffet that includes all kinds of meats.

The Abbey Lounge in Somerville Closes

The Abbey Lounge, a rock club located just outside of Inman Square on Beacon Street in Somerville, has shut its doors.

The final show at the Abbey Lounge was held on Wednesday, November 26, and the last day of operation was this past Friday (November 28).

No word on what might be going in to the spot vacated by the Abbey Lounge at this point. Once more information comes along, we will post it here....

Ghazal Coming to Jamaica Plain

A new Indian restaurant will be opening in Jamaica Plain. Both Chowhound and EveryBlock Boston report that Ghazal Fine Indian Cuisine will be opening at 711 Centre Street (the spot where Cafe D used to be, near the corner of Centre and Burroughs Streets).

No specific date has been given as to when Ghazal will open. Stay tuned, as we hope to get updates over the coming days...

Latest Review: Grain and Salt, Allston

The latest review on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants Web site is for a Pakistani and Indian restaurant in the Allston section of Boston called Grain and Salt. Located just off the main shopping street in the center of Allston, Grain and Salt is just out of the way enough to be little known to many diners. The menu at Grain and Salt includes a mix of Pakistani and Indian dishes (as well as some Indian-Chinese dishes), with a special menu featured on weekends. New Restaurants Around Boston: Late Fall, 2008

With the economy in such rough shape, one would think that restaurants would be closing all over the Boston area. But oddly enough, the past month has seen a slew of restaurant openings throughout the region, with realtively few dining spots closing.

Restaurants that have opened in late October and November include (in no particular order): The Littlest Bar, an Irish pub in the Financial District of Boston; Taste of Siam, a Thai restaurant in Stoneham; The Local, a restaurant and pub in West Newton; Craigie on Main, a New American restaurant between Central and Kendall Squares in Cambridge; Bina Osteria, an Italian restaurant near Downtown Crossing in Boston; Emilianoz, a Mexican restaurant in Medford; Shabu Square, an Asian hot pot restaurant in the Harvard Square section of Cambridge; The Franklin Cafe, an upscale comfort food place in South Boston; Sportello, an Italian restaurant in the Fort Point Channel district of Boston, and Tsunami, a Japanese restaurant in Arlington.

As we hear about more restaurant openings (or closings) in the Boston area over the coming weeks, we will be sure to let you know.

Farewell, Giuseppi's, Hello Emilianoz (Medford)

Giuseppi's Kitchen, an Italian restaurant on Boston Avenue in West Medford, has officially closed, with a Mexican restaurant taking its place. Emilianoz Mexican Grill has taken over the spot formerly occupied by Giuseppi's, with its opening occurring over the past day or two. It looks to be open for at least lunch and dinner--not sure about breakfast at this time.

The Franklin Cafe Opens in South Boston

The Franklin Cafe has opened a third location, this one being on Dorchester Avenue in South Boston.

Located in the Allele building (a new condo development) just south of the Broadway T Stop, the new Franklin Cafe joins its sister restaurants in the South End of Boston and Gloucester. All three Franklin Cafes feature New American cuisine and comfort food at reasonable prices.

Tsunami Grand Opening in Arlington, November 22, 2008

Tsunami, a Japanese restaurant that has been a neighborhood favorite in Brookline's Coolidge Corner for years, is now opening a second location in Arlington Center.

The Arlington branch of Tsunami is now open for business, but they are having an official grand opening this coming Saturday (November 22). The open house grand opening will be held from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

The menu at the Arlington location of Tsunami features sushi, sashimi, and maki, as well as a variety of appetizers and kitchen entrees.

Bina Osteria and Bina Alimentari (Downtown Crossing, Boston) Are Now Open

Just a quick update that a new Italian restaurant and gourmet food shop are now open in the Downtown Crossing section of Boston. Bina Osteria (the restaurant) and Bina Alimentari (the food shop), which are both located by the corner of Washington Street and Avery Street near Boston Common and the Theater District, have officially opened their doors to diners and shoppers. Both the restaurant and food shop will be open 7 days a week.

Latest Review: Mill City Gourmet, Lawrence

The latest review on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants Web site is for the Mill City Gourmet, a cafe located in the Everett Mills building on Union Street in downtown Lawrence. The Mill City Gourmet is a funky and friendly little breakfast and lunch spot with lots of character, mainly from its location within an historic mill building. Lunches at the Mill City mostly consist of soups, salads, and sandwiches, and many of the options are healthy and fresh. The Greek Grille (Winchester) Is Now Open

A new Greek restaurant is in Winchester is now open. It is called the Greek Grille, and it is located on Main Street just north of the rotary in the center of town. It appears to be mostly a takeout restaurant, though it does have seating.

The Littlest Bar Is Now Open Again in Boston (In a New Location)

The Littlest Bar, a popular Irish pub on Province Street in Downtown Crossing that closed a couple of years ago, is now open once again, but in a new location. The new Littlest Bar is located on Broad Street in the Financial District, and has more room than the original, which had been in existence since the 1940s. The new location looks to have a capacity of just under 100 people.

Lunch with Curt Schilling at Da Vinci's on December 11, 2008

Sports station WEEI is hosting a charity event at Da Vinci’s Ristorante in Boston on Thursday, December 11 to help raise money for Curt's Pitch for ALS, a program founded by Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling and his wife Shonda. Curt Schilling will be at the event, as well as WEEI morning hosts Dennis and Callahan.

BOND Restaurant and Lounge to Open This Winter

A new casual, upscale dining spot called BOND restaurant and lounge will be opening in the Langham Hotel in Boston's Financial District in the winter of 2009.

According to the Langham Hotel site, BOND will feature gourmet sandwiches for lunch and small plates for dinner, with an emphasis on international cuisine.

This will be the third restaurant to open in the Langham Hotel, as BOND will soon join Cafe Fleuri and the Julien Bar and Lounge.

Abbey Lounge in Somerville Closing at the End of November

The Abbey Lounge, a somewhat grungy but beloved rock and roll club located on Beacon Street in Somerville, is going to close its doors later this month.

According to the Boston Herald, fund-raising efforts by Boston-area bands failed to keep the historic Inman Square bar open, and it looks like it will shut down for good on November 28.

The final show at the Abbey Lounge will be held on Wednesday, November 26, and will include the bands The Acro-Brats, Auto Interiors, Jay Allen, The Coffin Lids, The Curses, The Konks, Muck and the Mires, Spitzz, The Sprained Ankles, The Tampoffs, and Triple Thick.

Craigie on Main in Cambridge Is Open

Craigie on Main, a new restaurant located on Main Street between Central Square and Inman Square in Cambridge, has officially opened its doors.

Formerly the Craigie Street Bistrot in Huron Village, Craigie on Main has moved to a new spot but retains its high-end feel with a seasonal a la carte menu and a tasting menu. The restaurant also has a bar menu and will be serving brunch at some point in the future.

Craigie on Main is located in the place that was formerly occupied by La Groceria, an Italian restaurant that closed earlier this year.

Fire Hits Atlantic Fish Co., Other Back Bay Businesses

The Atlantic Fish Co., a seafood restaurant located in the Back Bay of Boston, sustained extensive damage in a fire that broke out early Saturday morning. According to WBZ, the fire seems to have been started by an electrical short circuit, with the total damage estimated at being around $1.6 million. Though Atlantic Fish is closed indefinitely, it appears that the restaurant may not have been a total loss and will hopefully be able to re-open in the near future.

Atlantic Fish is located at 761 Boylston Street in the heart of the Back Bay. It has been a popular seafood spot among locals and tourists alike since opening in 1978.

Restaurant Deals at The 2008 Mayor's Holiday Special Web Site

Just in time for the holiday season, The Mayor's Holiday Special Web site is up and running, thanks in part to Mayor Thomas M. Menino and the city of Boston as well as a number of local businesses.

The Web site, which is at http://www.mayorsholidayspecial.com, includes specials on restaurants, lodging, shopping, entertainment, and events. For dining spots, there are specials (as of today) offered for folks going to Vlora in the Back Bay, J.P. Licks in Jamaica Plain, Jacob Wirth in the Theater District, Robyn's Bar and Grill in Roslindale, and Vox Populi in the Back Bay.

Located on Route 3A in the heart of downtown Plymouth, the Colonial Restaurant is a comfortable, homey eating place that feels a bit like a diner inside. The Local Restaurant Opens in West Newton

A new West Newton gastropub called The Local Restaurant has opened its doors.

Quincy Market Bankruptcy Threat

General Growth Properties Inc., a REIT based out of Chicago that owns the Faneuil Hall Marketplace (including Quincy Market) in Boston, is in danger of going bankrupt, according to reports that have come out today. WBZ 1030 and other news outlets mentioned this morning that General Growth, which is one of the largest owners of malls in the United States, may have to file for bankruptcy in December unless they are able to extend their debt or refinance.

Quincy Market is a popular food court that contains more than 40 restaurants, including The Dog House, Steve's Greek Cuisine, Pizzeria Regina, Boston Chowda, and the Brown Derby Deli. It is one of several sections of the Faneuil Hall Marketplace, which also includes North Market, South Market and the historic Faneuil Hall itself.

General Growth Properties owns several other malls in New England, including the Natick Collection in Natick, the Silver City Galleria in Taunton, the Swansea Mall in Swansea, the Steeplegate Mall in Concord, NH, the Brass Mill Center in Waterbury, CT, The Shoppes at Buckland Hills in Manchester, CT, Providence Place in Providence, RI, and Burlington Town Center in Burlington, VT.

Sportello Opens in the Fort Point Channel District

A casual Italian restaurant called Sportello has officially opened in the Fort Point Channel District of Boston. As reported earlier, this is another Barbara Lynch spot in the Fort Point area, the second of three spots that has opened (Drink was the first).

At this point in time, it appears that hours are limited at Sportello. It is probably a good idea to call in advance to check on when they are open at this time.

P.F. Chang's Opens in Peabody

P.F. Chang's China Bistro, a chain of upscale Chinese restaurants, has opened a new location at the Northshore Mall in Peabody.

According to the Gloucester Daily Times, P.F. Chang's, which opened on Monday, November 3, has a seating capacity of more than 200, and its menu has a price range of $11 to $22.

P.F. Chang's China Bistro has three other locations in the Boston area, including one at Park Plaza in downtown Boston, one at the Prudential Center in the Back Bay, and a third location in Natick.

Phantom Gourmet Beer and Food Fest Coming November 8, 2008

A brand new Phantom Gourmet festival begins this coming weekend. The Phantom Gourmet Beer and Food Fest will be held at Suffolk Downs in East Boston this coming Saturday, November 8, from 12:00 noon until midnight. Tickets are $4.00 in advance, or $5.00 at the show.

Vendors at the Phantom Gourmet Beer and Food Fest include Firefly's, Fuddruckers, Harrows, the Sausage Guy, the Sunset Grill, Wholly Cannoli, and more. There will be a number of different beers offered from Bass, Beck's, Budweiser, Hoegaarden, Michelob, and Stella Artois, to name a few.

Max and Dylans to Open Soon In Charlestown

A second Max and Dylans will be coming to Charlestown in the coming weeks. Accroding to Craigslist, an open house for job seekers is going to be held in this weekend at the City Square location in Charlestown where the new Max and Dylans will be (it is at the former site of Copia, and before that, Meze Estiatorio).

The original Max and Dylans is on West Street in the Downtown Crossing section of Boston, near Boston Common.

Village Smokehouse Opens in Lowell

The Village Smokehouse, a BBQ joint and Southern-style dining spot in Brookline Village, now has a sister restaurant in Lowell.

A new Village Smokehouse has opened on Middle Street in Lowell, with about three times as much room as the original in Brookline (it has a capacity of about 200). The restaurant features an open kitchen with a barbecue pit and exposed brick walls in both the dining area and the bar.

A new dining spot called Terra Luna Cafe will soon be opening in Lawrence. Located on Route 5 in the center of the quaint village of Putney in Southern Vermont, the Putney Diner feels more like a family restaurant or neighborhood dining spot than a diner, but the menu offers classic diner fare. The Battery -- A New Fish and Chips Place -- Opens in Brighton

A new fish and chips place called The Battery has opened in Brighton. The dining spot looks to be mostly a takeout place, but there are a few tables for folks who want to dine in.

The Battery is located on Washington Street, just west of the Market Street intersection, in Brighton Center.

Barbara Lynch's Sportello to Open in November

A second Barbara Lynch spot will soon be opening in the Fort Point Channel district. Sportello will be located at 348 Congress Street (in the same building as the new lounge called Drink). It looks to be a casual Italian restaurant and should be opening within the next few weeks.

Barbara Lynch will also be opening a third restaurant in the same area in early 2008. It appears that this restaurant will be more of a fine-dining spot.

Rudi's Resto Cafe to Open in the South End of Boston

Rudi's Resto Cafe and Catering will soon be opening a second restaurant in the South End of Boston. The new spot will be located at the Hampton Inn and Suites near the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard by Newmarket Square.

The original Rudi's, which is located at Rowes Wharf by the waterfront, is a popular spot that features mostly lighter fare, including soups, salads, sandwiches, and desserts.

The new Rudi's will have more than 200 seats as well as a full bar.

C.F. Donovan's Is (Finally) Opening in Hyde Park

After about a two year delay, it appears that the opening of C.F. Donovan's in the Cleary Square section of Hyde Park is imminent. According to Craigslist, a job fair for the new restaurant and pub will be happening early next week.

The original C.F. Donovan's is in the Savin Hill section of Dorchester and remains a popular spot with neighborhood folks and foodies alike, with a variety of comfort food items and pub grub, as well as a decent beer list.

High Street Grill Opens in North Andover

After much anticipation, the High Street Grill has opened its doors inside the historic East Mill in North Andover.

The people behind this Southern-influenced upscale restaurant are well-known in the Boston-area restaurant scene. Kristi Morris used to be the general manager of the East Coast Grill in the Inman Square section of Cambridge, and Chris Schlesinger is the owner of the same establishment. The executive chef is also a familiar name in culinary circles--John Porreca, who used to work at Sasso on Huntington Avenue in Boston.

Items on the menu at the High Street Grill include BBQ spit-roasted chicken, grilled mahi mahi, cherrystone clam linguini, Kansas City pork spareribs, and Texas-Style beef brisket.

The 19th annual Bowen's Wharf Seafood Festival will be held in Newport, RI, this coming Saturday and Sunday (October 18 and 19). Nightmare on Beacon Street Coming to The Fireplace in Brookline, October 28, 2008

The annual Nightmare on Beacon Street Halloween party will be held once again at the Fireplace Restaurant in Brookline on Tuesday, October 28 at 8:00 PM. A new Italian restaurant and gourmet food shop will be opening in Downtown Crossing within two to three weeks. Bina Osteria and Bina Alimentari are coming to the corner of Washington Street and Avery Street just east of Boston Common, with both the restaurant (Bina Osteria) and the shop (Bina Alimentari) due to open sometime during the first week of November.

Bina Osteria looks to be an Italian restaurant and bar that will be open for lunch and dinner as well as brunch on weekends, while Bina Alimentari will be a European-style gourmet food shop with wine, cheese, coffees, teas, and a variety of food items. Both the restaurant and food shop will be open 7 days a week.

Wellfleet OysterFest Coming October 18-19, 2008

The 2008 Wellfleet OysterFest is returning to Cape Cod this weekend. Starting on Saturday, October 18 and running through Sunday, October 19, the two-day festival in the center of Wellfleet is free of charge and will feature a variety of events, including music, an arts and crafts fair, cooking demonstrations, and oyster shucking contests. Latest Review: Finnegan's Wake, Walpole

The latest review on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants Web site is for an Irish pub in Walpole Center called Finnegan's Wake. Located in the basement of an old foundry on a side street just off Route 1A, Finnegan's Wake has lots of character and charm, and is one of several good Irish pubs in the immediate area. Atlantic Beer Garden on the Boston Waterfront Is Now Open

A new restaurant and bar called the Atlantic Beer Garden has opened its doors in the Seaport District of Boston. The third beer garden owned by Cronin Development, the Atlantic Beer Garden should become a popular spot, as it has an outdoor deck along the waterfront and is one of only a handful of watering holes in the area (though the list is slowly growing).

The Atlantic Beer Garden is located on Northern Avenue in the same building as the Seaport Bar and Grille, in the spot where Eastern Pier II used to be.

Super 88 Closes Three Stores

Super 88, a Boston-area Chinese supermarket chain, has closed three of its stores, but vows to remain in business. According to the Boston Globe, the Quincy, Chinatown, and South End markets have been shut down. The Super 88 stores in Allston, Malden, and South Bay remain open for now.

Super 88 has been in business since 1978 and expanded in recent years, becoming the largest Asian supermarket chain in the Boston area.

The 402, a barbecue joint and pub, will be opening soon in Easton. This new dining spot will be taking the place of Brennan's, an Irish pub that closed a few months ago. No specific opening date has been given, but when we hear of one, we will post it here.

The Winery on 53 Opens in Pembroke

Yet another new restaurant has opened in the Boston area. The Winery on 53 has moved into the spot where Bobby Hackett's Restaurant had been for several decades. It looks to be a restaurant with a widely varied menu, including chicken panko, lobster ravioli, meat loaf, lamb kabobs, grilled swordfish, lobster rolls, and pizza. The Winery on 53 also has an extensive wine list, and features a number of interesting desserts.

Ten Tables Opening a Second Restaurant in the Old Craigie Street Bistrot Location

Ten Tables, a Jamaica Plain restaurant that is a popular neighborhood spot, will be opening a second restaurant (also called Ten Tables) in the Old Craigie Street Bistrot location just outside of Harvard Square on the edge of Huron Village in Cambridge.

The Boston Globe reported on Wednesday that the new Ten Tables be larger than the current Jamaica Plain location, with room for nearly 50 diners. The Globe also mentioned that the new restaurant may open its doors just before Christmas.

The Craigie Street Bistrot will soon be moving to the spot formerly occupied by La Groceria on Main Street between Central Square and Kendall Square.

Tamarind Bay Opens Second Location, This One in Brookline

Tamarind Bay, a top-rated Indian restaurant in the Harvard Square section of Cambridge, has opened a second location. The new Tamarind Bay is located on Beacon Street in the Washington Square section of Brookline. The restaurant moves into the spot formerly occupied by the Indian Cafe.

Awarded "Restaurant of the Year" by the Boston Phoenix in 2004 (the same year that they opened in Harvard Square), Tamarind Bay features authentic Indian cuisine in an attractive, modern setting.

The latest review on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants Web site is for Casa Portugal, a Portuguese restaurant on Cambridge Street just outside of Inman Square in Cambridge. Tiny and plain-looking from the outside but cozy and slightly romantic inside, Casa Portugal is one of a handful of Portuguese dining spots in Cambridge, which is in fact home to most of the Portuguese restaurants that reside in the Boston area (some can also be found in Peabody, Lowell, and a few other places). Drink Opens in the Fort Point Channel District of Boston

A new lounge called Drink has opened on Congress Street in the Fort Point Channel section of Boston. Drink, as the name implies, is more of a place to get an alcoholic beverage than a bite to eat, though there is a food menu here, mostly featuring smaller dishes.

Barbara Lynch and John Gertsen (both of No. 9 Park fame) are behind this new spot, which is in the basement of one of many warehouses that dots the Fort Point landscape.

Olivadi Restaurant in Norwood Opens

A number of new restaurants have opened in the Boston area over the past few days, including an Italian restaurant in the center of Norwood called Olivadi Restaurant. Olivadi is an upscale yet casual restaurant that features a number of pasta dishes on its menu (among other items), and has homemade breads and a variety of desserts. The restaurant includes both a dining area and a bar.

Asana Opens at the Mandarin Oriental Boston

The Mandarin Oriental Boston, a luxury hotel on Boylston Street in the Back Bay, is now open, and with it, a new restaurant called Asana.

Upscale and elegant with a mix of Asian and New American cuisine, Asana includes dishes that use locally grown and organic ingredients. Included will be a variety of cheeses from around New England.

Asana will be open breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Erbaluce Opens in Bay Village, Boston

A new restaurant has opened in the Bay Village neighborhood of Boston. Erbaluce will be making its home on Church Street, which is where the little-known but highly regarded Dedo used to be. Erbaluce's menu will feature mostly Italian cuisine, with an emphasis on creative Northern Italian dishes. According to the Boston Herald, the chef and co-owner of the restaurant is Charles Draghi, who used to work at Marcuccio’s in the North End of Boston about 10 years ago.

House of Siam Tremont Street to Open in Late October

A second House of Siam is coming to the South End of Boston.

House of Siam Tremont Street will be located in the spot where Thai Village used to reside. It will be a smaller space than the original House of Siam, which is located several blocks away on Columbus Avenue. According to the Boston Herald, the House of Siam Tremont Street will have about 35 seats, a bit more than half the capacity of the original House of Siam, and the menu at the new House of Siam will be smaller.

The Herald reports that the House of Siam Tremont Street should be open in a few weeks.

UPDATE: King Fung Garden in Chinatown is Open Again

Contrary to earlier reports (including one in the Boston Herald and one here on this site) King Fung Garden in Chinatown remains open. A phone call to the restaurant confirmed that they are now open under new management, and will continue to be called King Fung Garden, with a menu that is more or less the same.

In short, it appears that there will be two King Fung Gardens in the Boston area--one in chinatown and one in Brookline--but with two different owners.

A strange turn of events, indeed...if anyone tries the new "old" King Fung Garden in Chinatown, please let us know what you think.

Burger King to Stop Using Trans Fats

Burger King, the number two hamburger chain in the United States, said on Thursday that it is switching to trans fat free oils at all of its restaurants in this country.

According to the Associated Press, all of the foods at Burger King will have zero grams of trans fat by the beginning of November this year.

Trans fats, or partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, are considered to be "bad" fats that can cause bad cholesterol to increase and good cholesterol to decrease, and also cause heart problems.

Burger King Corp. currently operates more than 11,000 restaurants worldwide, including a number of locations in the Boston area.

2008 Harpoon Octoberfest, October 3-4

The 19th annual Harpoon Octoberfest is just around the corner. This popular German-style festival will be held at the Harpoon Brewery in Boston on Friday, October 3 and Saturday, October 4 this year, with a door charge of $15.00 (tickets will not be sold in advance). The Harpoon Octoberfest will feature German food and music, as well as plenty of Harpoon Octoberfest beer.

Tsunami Restaurant to Open in Arlington

One Japanese restaurant in Arlington has officially closed, with another one to open in its place. Tsunami Restaurant will soon be opening up at 669a Massachusetts Avenue (across from the Arlington Public Library), replacing Shanghai and Tokyo, a Chinese and Japanese restaurant that closed its doors for vacation this past spring and never re-opened.

No other details could be found about the opening of Tsunami Restaurant, but there is currently a temporary sign displaying the name of the restaurant above the front door, signifying that it won't be long before Tsunami is in business...

Jimbo's Steak and Fin in Braintree Has Closed

Another restaurant in the Boston area has closed. Early this morning, we discovered that Jimbo's Steak and Fin in Braintree had a For Lease sign in front of the restaurant, and the apparent closing of this Franklin Street restaurant was soon confirmed in an article by the Quincy Patriot Ledger. According to the Ledger, a sign has been posted in front of Jimbo's that refers diners to the Granite Grill, which is a few blocks away in a shopping center on Granite Street.

Jimbo’s Steak and Fin, which used to be called Jimbo’s South (and was connected with the now-closed Jimmy's Harborside in Boston), specialized in seafood dishes and traditional American fare. It was a popular neighborhood restaurant that attracted a variety of folks, including families, retirees, and a younger crowd later at night.

Jerry Remy's Sports Bar and Grill Opens at Logan Airport, East Boston

A new restaurant has come to Logan Airport in East Boston, and the owner of this restaurant certainly has a familiar name. Jerry Remy's Sports Bar and Grill is now open and is located in the pre-security section of Terminal C at Logan. The restaurant has room for 115 diners, and its menu includes soups, salads, sandwiches, and comfort food, with the macaroni and cheese bring the signature dish here. Jerry Remy's also has an extensive beer and wine list, as well as cocktails, single malt scotches and bourbons, and cordials and liqueurs.

On a side note, another Jerry Remy's Sports Bar and Grill will open next to Fenway Park in the spring of 2009 in the former WBCN building on Boylston Street.

Emma's Pub and Pizza Opens in Norton; A Third Location Coming to Bridgewater Center

A second Emma's Pub and Pizza has opened south of Boston. Ron Emma (owner of the original Emma's in Bridgewater) said in a recent email that the new Emma's opened in Norton over the past weekend (Sunday, September 21, to be exact), and that they are also working on opening a third dining spot called Emma's Pub and Pizza Downtown in Bridgewater Center.

The original Emma's Pub and Pizza, which is located on Route 104 just east of the Route 24 intersection, is known for its excellent bar pizza, cheap prices, and quirky atmosphere.

King Fung Garden in Chinatown to Close

One of Boston's best Chinese restaurants is closing.

According to the Boston Herald, King Fung Garden, a Kneeland Street hole in the wall that is renowned for its Peking duck as well as several other outstanding dishes, will close its doors for good on Monday, September 29. The Herald mentions that the owner of the restaurant will be going to King Fung Garden II in Brookline to join his wife there.

King Fung Garden has constantly been on the "best of" lists for Chinese restaurants in the Boston area, and while its lack of atmosphere is almost legendary (glaring lights, uncomfortable seating, tight quarters), the food has always more than made up for its spartan digs.

King Fung's departure comes on the heels of the closing of another famous Chinatown restaurant. Grand Chau Chow, which was located on Beach Street and was one of Chinatown's most popular dining spots, shut its doors in August.

Fire at Mr. Bartley's Burger Cottage in Cambridge

Mr. Bartley's Burger Cottage in Harvard Square is closed indefinitely because of a kitchen fire that occurred over the weekend.

According to the Harvard Crimson, the fire broke out on Saturday morning at the famous Cambridge burger joint, causing about $10,000 in damage. The Crimson goes on to report that the owner of Mr. Bartley's is not sure when the restaurant will open its doors again.

No injuries were reported in the fire.

The Greek Grille Is Coming to Winchester

It appears that a new Greek restaurant is coming to the Boston area. The Greek Grille, will be located on Main Street in Winchester (near the north side of the rotary in the center of town) and looks like it may end up being mostly a takeout place, based on the size of the spot. The sign out front mentions basic Greek dishes, including souvlaki.

Stay tuned as we get more information on the Greek Grille. It is not open just yet (and there is no information on the restaurant at the present time), but we'll be sure to post updates on this upcoming Winchester dining spot as we get them.

R.J. Crowley’s in West Newton to Become The Local

R.J. Crowley’s in West Newton will soon be replaced by a pub that will specialize in locally-produced food and beers.

According to the Boston Herald, the soon-to-be-open pub, which will be called The Local, will have beer on tap that represents brewers from each state in New England as well as a house brew made by either the Boston Beer Company or the Harpoon Brewery. The Herald further mentions that The Local will look less like an Irish pub and more like a modern watering hole.

The Local should be open by early October.

More Restaurant Closures Due to the Rough Economy

As mentioned earlier this week, Ma Glockner's, a Bellingham, MA restaurant that was a favorite among locals, has closed after more than 70 years in business due to the poor economy. Sadly, two more beloved restaurants/food spots in New England have also closed recently because of the tough economic times. Sausage Heaven, a sausage wholesaler and retailer on West Auburn Street in Manchester, NH, has shut its doors, while Paul's Famous Hamburgers on Route 1 in Milford, CT, has closed after more than 60 years in business.

There will certainly be more restaurants and food places closing over the coming months due to the present state of the economy. Stay tuned, as any closings that happen around Boston and New England will be posted here.

Ecco in East Boston Opens

A new upscale Italian restaurant and tapas bar in East Boston will open its doors on Saturday. Ecco, which is located on Porter Street, had a soft opening earlier this week and will officially open on September 20. The restaurant will feature small plates, full meals, and a variety of martinis and wines, as well as desserts, espresso, and cappuccino.

Ecco resides in the spot formerly occupied by Sablone's and is within site of Santarpio's, a Boston institution famous for its pizza.

Ma Glockner's in Bellingham Closes

The shaky economy has claimed another victim in the restaurant world, this time southwest of Boston. According to the Milford Daily News, Ma Glockner's Restaurant in Bellingham has closed its doors after being in business for 71 years. The article in the Daily News mentions that the closing was due to the poor economy and increasing food costs.

Ma Glockner's was a local favorite in the Bellingham area with two dishes that patrons loved in particular: The berched chicken (par-boiled, then grilled) and the homemade cinnamon buns.

Phantom Gourmet Food Festival Coming to Boston September 20, 2008

The Phantom Gourmet Food Festival is just around the corner. It will be held once again near Fenway Park in Boston at the corner of Ipswich and Lansdowne Streets on Saturday, September 20, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Tickets are $40 and includes unlimited food from 80 different restaurants, pastry shops, bakeries, and ice cream shops.

Salem Fall Restaurant Week, September 14-18, 2008

Salem Fall Restaurant Week is being held this week. It started on Sunday, September 14, and will be running until Thursday, September 18.

Unlike Boston Restaurant Week, this event does not include lunch (it is dinner only). Prices for a prix fixe three-course meal is $20.08, but some restaurants are also including an exclusive dinner option that costs $30.08.

Restaurants that are participating include The Black Lobster at Stromberg's Cove, Caffe Graziani, Capt.'s Waterfront Grill and Club, Cilantro, Finz, Grapevine, Lyceum Bar and Grill, Nathaniel's, Passage to India, Regatta Pub, Rockafellas, Sixty2 on Wharf, Spirits at 300 Derby, Strega, Tavern at the Hawthorne, Thai Ginger, and Thai Place.

Latest Review: Mango II, Tewksbury

The latest review on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants Web site is for a Thai restaurant on Route 38 in Tewksbury called Mango II. Located in a nondescript strip mall near the Wilmington line, Mango II is a friendly, comfortable place that features authentic Thai food. Ban of Trans Fats in Boston Restaurants Made Official

The use of trans fats in foods at Boston restaurants was officially banned over the past weekend.

According to the Boston Globe, the unhealthy fats will no longer be allowed in any of Boston's dining spots. The Globe further mentions that Boston city inspectors will look to see if restaurants are in compliance of the new rule during their regular inspections, fining those restuarants that violate the rule upwards of $1,000.

Stone Hearth Pizza Now Open in Cambridge

While we're on the topic of restaurant openings and closings, it might be a good time to mention that the new Stone Hearth Pizza is now open on Mass. Ave. in Cambridge (near Porter Square).

Stone Hearth Pizza, which also has locations in Belmont and Needham, replaced DiMio Pizza, which closed earlier this summer.

Restaurant Openings, Closings - September, 2008

There have been a number of restaurant closings in the Boston area over the past few weeks, as well as a few openings of new restaurants.

Included in the former are Aneka Rasa, a Malaysian restaurant in Allston that has closed; Sabor Do Brasil, a Brazilian restaurant between Porter Square and Union Square in Somerville; and Eastern Pier II, a Chinese restaurant in the Seaport District of South Boston.

In the latter category are Max & Dylan's, a restuarant in downtown Boston that just opened; BurgerWorks, a burger joint in North Beverly; Roadhouse BBQ, a barbecue joint in Brookline; and T-Rex Taqueria, a Mexican restaurant, also in Brookline.

BurgerWorks in Beverly Is Now Open

According to Paul Leighton of the Salem News (and as posted on the Eagle-Tribune blog), BurgerWorks, a burger joint in Beverly, is now open. BurgerWorks, which takes over the spot vacated by Big Bully's in 2007, is located in the North Beverly Plaza on Route 1A, just north of the Route 128 exit.

As mentioned in an earlier blog entry on this site (and as reported by the Salem News), BurgerWorks is owned by the folks who used to own Yanks, a now-closed upscale restaurant that was in Beverly Farms (Zoes Tapas and Bar now resides where Yanks used to be).

Latest Review: Foley's Backstreet Grille, Stoughton

The latest review on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants Web site is for Foley's Backstreet Grille, a family-friendly neighborhood dining spot in Stoughton. Foley's Backstreet Grille is a warm, comfortable restaurant a bit off the beaten path that features mostly traditional American dishes and comfort food. Eastern Pier II Closes; Atlantic Beer Garden To Open In Its Place

Eastern Pier II, a highly-rated Chinese restaurant on Northern Avenue in the Seaport District of Boston, has closed its doors. In its place, according to the Boston Herald, will be an upscale restaurant and bar called the Atlantic Beer Garden. This will be the third beer garden owned by Jon Cronin of Cronin Development (the Boston Beer Garden and the Brighton Beer Garden are the others). It appears that the adjacent Seaport Bar & Grille will remain open.

Peabody Restaurant Week to Be Held September 7-11, 2008

The city of Peabody is holding its first annual Peabody Restaurant Week, starting this Sunday. September 7. The event will continue through Thursday, September 11, with a number of restaurants participating, including Sugar Cane, Willowtree, Gallo Nero, Champions, China Corner, Trackside Bar and Grille, and Fire Bull. A $15 prix fixe menu (drinks not included) will be offered at each of the participating Peabody dining spots.

This event comes as the city gets ready for the 25th annual Peabody International Festival, which will be held on Sunday, September 14.

CBS Scene to Open at Patriot Place in Foxboro This Week

After many months of anticipation, a new dining and entertainment spot called CBS Scene will be opening at Patriot Place in Foxboro, MA, this week. CBS Scene is one of a number of restaurants opening in this huge shopping and entertainment complex located next to Gillette Stadium (home of the New England Patriots). According to the Attleboro Sun Chronicle, other dining spots opening in Patriot Place will include Skipjacks, Blue Fin Lounge, Tastings Wine Bar and Bistro, Red Robin (which is already open), Bar Louie, and Davios.

Latest Review: Patou Thai, Belmont

The latest review on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants Web site is for a Thai restaurant in Belmont Center called Patou Thai. One of several restaurants that now can be found in the center of Belmont, Patou Thai concentrated mostly on authentic Thai dishes, though a few more familiar Americanized Thai dishes are also offered here. Upstairs at the Marliave to Open This Thursday (September 4)

The upstairs dining room at Marliave will be opening its doors for the first time this Thursday evening. This local landmark, which re-opened under the ownership of Grotto, a Beacon Hill restaurant, will now be fully open both upstairs and downstairs.

According to an email received from Grotto, the menu upstairs at Marliave will feature items such as foie gras sliders, horseradish-crusted Colorado lamb rack, tuna Wellington, butter-poached lobster, and dry-aged Wolf Neck farm sirloin with duck fat fries. The email also mentioned that there will also be a cheese cart with more than 20 selections. House-prepared desserts will also be offered.

Marliave, which is located on Bosworth Street in downtown Boston, has had its downstairs area open since the middle of August.

M.J. O’Connor’s Coming to the Seaport District of Boston

The waterfront of South Boston will soon be home to a new Irish pub with a familiar name.

According to Zagat Buzz, M.J. O’Connor’s will be opening a second location in the Westin Boston Waterfront on Summer Street this fall. The original M.J. O’Connor’s, which is located in the Boston Park Plaza Hotel on Columbus Avenue in downtown Boston, is an often-quiet and laid back Irish pub that is popular mainly with hotel guests and theater-goers.

Latest Review: Ecco Trattoria, Weymouth

The latest review on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants Web site is for Ecco Trattoria, a Northern Italian restaurant located in a strip mall on Route 18 in Weymouth. Slightly upscale and rather serene inside, Ecco Trattoria is much different from many of the other Italian restaurants that are in Weymouth and nearby Braintree and Quincy. The menu features a variety of steak, seafood, chicken, and veal dishes, and also has a handful of pasta dishes as well. James Hook and Company's Retail Business Is Open Again

James Hook and Company, a Boston seafood wholesaler and retailer that was destroyed by fire in late May of this year, has their retail business up and running once again.

According to WBZ 1030, James Hook is running the retail end of their business out of a temporary spot at their old location, with the trailer actually being more spacious than the original spot. Their permanent home will be finished at some point in the future.

The wholesale part of James Hook and Company has been running for awhile now, thanks in part to the generosity of its competitors.

Circle to Open in the South End of Boston

A new restaurant called Circle will be opening in the South End of Boston over the next few weeks. It will be located in the space where Bob's Southern Bistro used to be on Columbus Avenue near the Mass. Ave. intersection.

According to the Boston Herald, Circle will have room for about 90 people and will have a menu that focuses mainly on contemporary French cuisine.

Latest Review: New Brothers Restaurant and Deli, Danvers

The latest review on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants Web site is for a Greek cafeteria-style restaurant in Danvers called New Brothers Restaurant and Deli. Cheap, quick, and friendly, New Brothers is a good place to go while in the Danvers area if you are looking for a casual place to eat that also has freshly-made food. Downtown Bistro and Wine Bar in Lynn to Close

The summer of 2008 has seen its fair share of restaurant closings, and now you can add one more to the list. The Downtown Bistro and Wine Bar, un upscale restaurant on Oxford Street in Lynn, will be shutting its doors later this month.

According to the Daily Item of Lynn, the owner of the Downtown Bistro decided to close the restaurant because it was simply not attracting enough business. The Daily Item also mentions that there is some interest in opening a new restaurant in the spot that will soon be vacated by the restaurant.

The owner of the Downtown Bistro and Wine Bar also owns the Navy Yard Bistro and Wine Bar, a restaurant on 1st Avenue in Charlestown.

Marliave Opens; Thai Village Closes

Two more changes have come to the Boston restaurant scene over the past few days.

Marliave, a local landmark on Bosworth Street in downtown Boston, has re-opened under new management (it is now owned by the folks who own Grotto). First opened back in the 1880s, Marliave is now up and running once again, with extensive restorations made to the historic building. The upstairs section of the restaurant will feature continental cuisine, while the downstairs section will be feature more traditional American fare.

Thai Village, a tiny restaurant on Tremont Street in the South End of Boston, has shut its doors. Thai Village was a nice option for locals who yearned for good, cheap Thai cuisine and wanted an alternative to the excellent House of Siam, the South End's other Thai restaurant. No word on what will be going into the spot as of yet...

Masa Southwest Bar and Grill Coming to Woburn This Fall

A new restaurant is coming to Woburn, and it is one that may be familiar to Boston diners.

Masa Southwest Bar and Grill, an upscale restaurant featuring Southwest-style cuisine, will be opening in the spot vacated by the Bear Rock Cafe in the Horn Pond Plaza on Route 3 near the Winchester line. This will be the second location for Masa, which also has a restaurant on Tremont Street in the South End of Boston.

No specific date has been given for Masa's opening, but it should be open sometime this fall.

New Section on Picnic Areas and Outdoor Lunch Spots Around Boston

Latest Review: Estoril, Fall River

The latest review on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants Web site is for Estoril, a Portuguese restaurant in the Flint Village section of Fall River. Estoril is a charming place with the look and feel of a high-end European restaurant, but the prices are exceptionally low for the type of food offered. Vintage Restaurant Returning to West Roxbury

Vintage, a restaurant on the VFW Parkway in West Roxbury that had closed earlier this year, is going to open its doors once again, perhaps as early as the end of this month.

According to the Wicked Local site, the newest version of the Vintage Restaurant will have much lower prices on their menu than before, and it will be more of a family-friendly dining spot. Wicked Local also mentions that the owners will be the same folks who run Alfredo's, an Italian restaurant just outside of Quincy Center.
