The operator of a small Boston-based chain of British restaurants and pubs has filed for bankruptcy.
According to the Boston Business Journal, Elephant and Castle Group Inc. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after defaulting on a loan. The article mentions that difficult economic conditions took its toll on sales and profits at the company, which apparently kept them from being able to make loan payments to GE Canada. For now, the group will keep its restaurant locations open (including the one on Devonshire Street in Boston's Financial District).
Currently, more than 20 locations of Elephant and Castle can be found in the United States and Canada. The parent group also operates the Piccadilly Pub chain of casual American eateries; we have not gotten any information on how the bankruptcy filing might affect them, so keep checking back for updates over the coming weeks.

Scratch Kitchen Opens in Salem
A restaurant that focuses on BBQ, handmade sandwiches, and more has just opened on the North Shore.
A note sent to us by Eat, Drink and Be Mommy indicates that Scratch Kitchen is now open on Derby Street in Salem. The restaurant, which is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday, features sandwiches such as pulled pork (that can be ordered with a fried egg on top, by the way), shrimp po' boy, smoked brisket, house-made peanut butter, and various veggie sandwiches. Entrees such as mussels and lasagna are also offered at Scratch Kitchen, and beer and wine is available.

Sweet Cupcakes Opens in Downtown Crossing; Cakeology on the Way
It looks like there will be no shortage of cupcakes in the Downtown Crossing section of Boston, as one spot has just opened while another is on the verge of opening.
According to The Boston Herald, Sweet Cupcakes is now open on School Street, making this the fourth location of the cupcake shop (the other three are on Mass. Ave., Newbury Street, and Brattle Street in Cambridge's Harvard Square). Sweet Cupcakes will soon be joined by Cakeology, which plans to open next month at a high-end condo development on nearby Province Street and will have a winner of "Cupcake Wars" (a Food Network show) running the place, according to the article.
Expect to pay $3.25 for a cupcake at both shops, according to the Herald.

It looks like a new eatery featuring frozen treats and fruity drinks is going to be opening in Allston.
A note from one of our "spotters" on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook page indicates that Bubble Berry will be coming to Cambridge Street, taking over part of the now-closed El Cafetal/El Chalan restaurant (the other section of the space may become home to the Lone Star Taco Bar, which would be opened by the adjacent Deep Ellum beer bar). A poster on the Chowhound site mentions that it appears Bubble Berry may be featuring frozen yogurt and bubble tea.
At this point, there doesn't appear to be a specific opening date for Bubble Berry; as soon as we get more information, we will post an update here.

Kickass Cupcake Truck Getting Ready to Take It to the Streets
About a month and a half after we reported that the Kickass Cupcake truck was destroyed in a fire, a brand new truck is getting ready to hit the road.
An email sent to us by CBH Communications indicates that the Somerville cupcake bakery may be on the streets of Boston starting Monday, July 11, and it looks like it could be at several different locations during its first week on the road.
[July 15 update: It looks like the Kickass Cupcake truck is officially set up now. An email from the City of Boston confirms that these are the spots where the truck will be, though confirmation of hours were not given to us. News Elsewhere: Lab-Grown Meat Grown from Test Tubes May Be on the Way
Are you ready for a test-tube burger?
According to several sources, including News Max, Dutch scientists have told Scientific American magazine that they are currently working to create laboratory-grown beef, with their goal possibly being achieved by next year. The News Max article states that scientists are taking beef mince that is grown from the stem cells of cattle, which is then allowed to multiply more than a billion times, essentially creating beef. It is not yet known if the in-vitro meat will taste like actual meat, but the scientists involved think that this may be a necessary option if the world is faced with a shortage of livestock, according to the article.
Taste tests on the test-tube meat will be needed, and as News Max mentions, the Dutch scientists working on this project will be looking for "a courageous person who is willing to be the first to taste it."

Cooking Channel Food Truck Returning to Boston, July 4, 2011
A food channel is getting ready to celebrate its first birthday with another cross-country frozen treat truck tour, and it will be returning to Boston while on the tour.
An email sent to us by Frank Public Relations in New York indicates that the Cooking Channel will be taking their ice cream truck on the road for another trip, and once again, it will be coming to downtown Boston on Monday, July 4 to hand out frozen treats. Unlike last year, when the truck was stationed at City Hall Plaza, the Cooking Channel will be setting up at 45 School Street, which is where the Old City Hall is located. The truck will be partnering with local vendors, according to the email.

Speed's Hot Dogs to Open Across from Gillette Stadium in Foxboro
It appears that an award-winning hot dog wagon in Boston that has been in business for more than 30 years is going to be opening a second cart, and football lovers will probably want to take note of this one.
A note on their Twitter page indicates that Boston Speed's Famous Hot Dog Wagon in Newmarket Square is planning to open another cart across from Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. The new wagon could be open by July, according to the note posted on Twitter.
Last December, we had reported that a bricks-and-mortar location of Speed's had also been in the works, with the place planning to open on Peterborough Street near Fenway Park in Boston at about this time, but we have not heard any updates on that spot of late.

It appears that a swank and trendy lounge in the heart of Boston has closed its doors.
According to a poster on Chowhound, Whiskey Park within the Park Plaza Hotel on Arlington Street is no longer in business, as a sign on the door apparently says that a new company acquired some of the Starwood properties (including the Park Plaza), and because of this, Whiskey Park has been shuttered. Phone calls placed to the lounge did not go through, and a check on the Park Plaza Hotel website indicates that Whiskey Park is no longer listed within the dining section of the site.
Whiskey Park first opened in Boston about six years ago, being one of a number of outlets of the upscale lounge run by Rande Gerber, who is the husband of model Cindy Crawford, along with his brother Scott (the two of them head up the Gerber Group, which is the group behind the lounges). In addition to Whiskey Park, the Gerber Group also runs Midnight Rose, The Penthouse, Stone Rose, and Whiskey Blue.

Whim Restaurant Is Opening at Smolak Farms in North Andover
A new restaurant is going to be serving food once a week at a farm in North Andover, and it will be featuring some of the best known chefs in the Boston area.
According to the Smolak Farms website, Whim will be opening at the farm starting next Wednesday evening, and it will be open every Wednesday through late August. The restaurant will be serving a three-course prix fixe dinner for $60 (plus drinks and gratuity) under the stars, with a different chef cooking for patrons each week. Some of the chefs participating include Jason Bond (Bondir), Erwin Ramos (Ole Mexican Grill), Andy Husbands (Tremont 647), and Rebecca Newell (The Beehive).
Dinners commence at 7:30 PM every Wednesday.

Update: Sagra in Dedham Has Closed; Grumpy Cactus Bar and Grill Falls Through

A little more than two months after the Somerville location of an Italian restaurant closed, it has been announced that its Dedham location has closed as well, and plans for a Cal-Mex dining spot to replace it are no longer in place.
According to an earlier job post within the Craigslist site, Sagra on Washington Street was going to be changed to a new place called Grumpy Cactus Bar and Grill. The post indicated that Grumpy Cactus was to feature live entertainment nightly, and an earlier Dedham Patch article mentioned that the owner of the planned eatery had been hoping to have pool tables as well, with the Board of Selectmen deciding on whether they would allow this in a meeting in early June. According to a more recent Dedham Patch article, the owner couldn't afford to pay for the lease while waiting for a decision from the town, so he did not show up to the meeting and the board did not bother with the matter.
The original Sagra on Highland Avenue in Somerville's Davis Square closed in March after being in business for about four years. (It is going to be replaced by a new spot called Five Horses Tavern.) The Sagra in Dedham opened last spring, moving into the space where a location of Finz Seafood and Grill had been.

All Star Pizza Bar Coming to Inman Square in Cambridge
The owner of an eclectic sandwich place in Cambridge's Inman Square is going to be opening a new dining spot across the street, and this one will be focusing on another type of comfort food.
According to The Feast, the person behind the All Star Sandwich Bar on Cambridge Street plans to open the All Star Pizza Bar in the space where Aram's Pizza used to be (also on Cambridge Street). The article mentions that the new eatery will feature brick-oven pizza as well as salads, wine, and beer. Options for pizza will be broken into three different categories, with traditional pies in one, chef-inspired pizzas in another, and unique/offbeat pizzas in a third section (cheeseburger, chile relleno, Mojito, etc.).
Expect a fall 2011 opening for the All Star Pizza Bar, according to the article.

The article mentions that the new eatery will feature brick-oven pizza as well as salads, wine, and beer. Options for pizza will be broken into three different categories, with traditional pies in one, chef-inspired pizzas in another, and unique/offbeat pizzas in a third section (cheeseburger, chile relleno, Mojito, etc.).

Deep Ellum in Allston to Open Lone Star Taco Bar
It looks like a popular beer bar in the Allston neighborhood of Boston is planning to open a taco bar next door, and it will be featuring house-made tacos as well as tequila drinks.
According to Universal Hub (via Krefetz Law Firm LLC), Deep Ellum on Cambridge Street has gained support of the Allston Civic Association to use the adjacent storefront (where El Cafetal used to be) for a new spot called the Lone Star Taco Bar. The chef and owner of Boston's only Senegalese restaurant is going to be on the next episode of a popular Food Network show.
An email sent to us by CBH Communications indicates that Marie-Claude Mendy of Teranga in the South End of Boston will be participating in Ted Allen's show "Chopped" next Tuesday (June 28). The episode, which airs at 10:00 PM, will pit Marie-Claude against other chefs, taking everyday ingredients and using them in a three-course meal that will be reviewed by a panel of judges. The winner of the episode will be awarded $10,000.

The person behind several Thai restaurants in the Boston area is going to be opening a new spot, with this one being on the North Shore.
According to The Salem News, Bangkok Pepper will open in Danvers, moving into the Purchase Street space where a KFC had been until closing last month. The article mentions that the owner of such restaurants as Spice Thai Cuisine in Cambridge's Harvard Square and Bangkok Express in Boston's Faneuil Hall is opening this new dining spot (the owner also runs Montien in the Theatre District of Boston). Peking Cuisine in Newton Closes; Sweet Potato Bistro Taking Its Place
A Chinese restaurant in Newton has shut its doors, and a Taiwanese eatery is going to be taking over the space.
According to a poster on the Chowhound site, Peking Cuisine on Walnut Street (just north of the Beacon Street intersection) is now closed, and a new place called Sweet Potato Bistro will be opening in its spot. The poster mentions that the new restaurant may be opening sometime in July.

Chestnut Hill Shopping Center Renovation Plan to Include New Restaurants
It looks like a shopping center just west of Boston may be getting substantial renovations, and with it, some new restaurants.
According to a couple of articles in The Boston Globe, plans have been submitted for upgrades to the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center on Route 9, with the possibility of dining spots being added to the redeveloped and expanded complex. Based on design plans posted within one of the articles, it appears that renovations would include a new three-story building, improved lighting, changes to landscaping and walkways, and the possible addition of a new movie theater. Neither article mentions the names of any restaurants that would be going into the upgraded shopping center.
The Board of Aldermen's Land Use Committee is voting on the special permit for the project sometime next month.

Taste of Allston Coming June 25, 2011
A culinary event is returning once again to Allston this weekend.
An email sent to us by CBH Communications indicates that the 14th annual Taste of Allston will be held on Saturday, June 25 from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Murr Center at the Harvard Athletic Complex. This year, the event will feature international foods from a number of Allston restaurants, as well as beer, wine, and live music. Some of the cuisines offered at the 2011 Taste of Allston will include Brazilian, Chinese, Colombian, Italian, Korean, Malaysian, Russian, and more.
Tickets to the Taste of Allston cost $15 in advance ($20 at the door), with children under 12 getting in for $10. All proceeds benefit the public-private partnership Allston Village Main Streets, which works to revitalize the Allston commercial district.

Trillium Brewery Is Opening in Boston's Fort Point Neighborhood
It looks like a new brewery is on the way to the Fort Point district of Boston.
According to The Feast, a Brookline home brewer and his wife have plans in place to open Trillium Brewery somewhere in the Fort Point neighborhood. The article states that the proposed brewery might possibly have an adjacent tasting room where visitors would be able to try some of the beers offered by Trillium, as well as what would apparently be some more limited edition brews.
[March 15, 2012 update: Don't expect a tasting room at the brewery, as a note sent to us from Trillium indicates that they will not be able to use the retail space for tastings.]
The folks behind the planned brewery currently have a Trilluim blog that mentions some of the beers they currently make, such as an American wild ale, a Belgian honey wit, an imperial red IPA, an oatmeal stout, and a pale ale.
A Zoning Board meeting will be held on July 12 to look into the plan to bring Trillium Brewery to Fort Point. [July 12 update: A Twitter post by Universal Hub indicates that the Zoning Board has given the brewery its approval to operate at 369 Congress Street. Universal Hub also mentions that the brewery will be able to make 1,000 barrels of beer per year.]

Christina's Is Opening in Newton Highlands
A new restaurant is coming to Newton Highlands, and it will be moving into the space where a location of a popular doughnut chain used to be.
According to Newton Villages, Christina's is planning to open on Walnut Street, taking over the former Dunkin' Donuts space (the Newton Highlands location of Dunkin' Donuts closed last December). The article mentions that Christina's will be a cafe-style bistro with Greek-influenced fare, and it will be open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The owners of the new spot had been hoping to open around Memorial Day, according to Newton Villages; as soon as we hear about a definite opening date, we will post an update here.

According to a poster on Chowhound, Buffalo Wild Wings is now open at the Liberty Tree Mall. (An earlier article in the Boston Globe mentioned that it has taken over the space where Vinny T's used to be.) The new Buffalo Wild Wings--which is also known as BW3--joins another location that opened this past April on Main Street in Saugus.
Back in 2009, we had reported that BW3 had been looking to open in the former Boater's World space on Independence Way, but that apparently fell through somewhere along the way.

It looks like a restaurant and sports bar in Lynnfield that was known in part for its arcade games has shut its doors.
According to posters on a several sites (including Chowhound), the Bostonville Grille on Route 1 is now closed after being in business for about six years. The restaurant and bar featured mostly pub grub and classic American fare (including chili, steak tips, sausages, hot dogs, burgers, baby back ribs, and pizza), and also had a huge arcade area with more than 200 games. A popular spot to watch sporting events, the Bostonville Grille had more than 200 TVs scattered throughout the place.

Happy Owl Cafe in Brighton Has Closed; Abby's Cafe Replacing It
Yet another restaurant is apparently on the way to Henshaw Street in Brighton, as the previous spot only lasted a few months, while the eatery before it only lasted about a year.
According to their website, the Happy Owl Cafe is no longer in business, recently closing after opening in late January of this year. The Happy Owl had replaced Cafe 57 & Grille, a European-style cafe that opened in late 2009. According to a post on the EveryBlock Boston site, another new dining spot called Abby's Cafe has been given a business license to operate in the Henshaw Street space. There appears to be little information on this upcoming restaurant; as soon as we find out more about it, we will post an update here.

Let's Go Burrito in Woburn Has Closed, New Restaurant Moving into Space
It looks like a Mexican restaurant in Woburn has shut its doors after being in business for a bit more than a year, and a new restaurant appears to be moving into the space.
According to a poster on Yelp, Let's Go Burrito at Cummings Park has apparently closed. A call placed to the dining spot seems to have confirmed this, as the phone number is no longer in service, and a recent post on the Craigslist site indicates that a new unnamed restaurant is taking over the spot.
Let's Go Burrito first opened in March of 2010, moving into the space where Lo Fat Know Fat had previously been. The eatery tended to focus on salads and burritos, though it did offer tortilla soup, tacos, and guacamole as well.

According to a poster on Yelp, Let's Go Burrito at Cummings Park has apparently closed. A call placed to the dining spot seems to have confirmed this, as the phone number is no longer in service, and a recent post on the Craigslist site indicates that a new unnamed restaurant is taking over the spot.
Let's Go Burrito first opened in March of 2010, moving into the space where Lo Fat Know Fat had previously been. The eatery tended to focus on salads and burritos, though it did offer tortilla soup, tacos, and guacamole as well.

Russian Benevolent Society in Allston May Soon Be Serving Dinner to the Public
It looks like a Russian social club in Allston may be getting into the business of serving food and drink to the public.
According to Universal Hub, the Russian Benevolent Society on Linden Street has been given permission to offer dinner and alcoholic beverages to folks Thursday through Sunday nights. Universal Hub mentions that the club is looking to do this partly for financial reasons, but also because it will give Russian immigrants in the immediate area a place to gather together socially and enjoy some traditional Russian cuisine.

Sei Bar Is Opening in Wakefield
An Asian restaurant with two locations north of Boston that focuses on Japanese and Thai cuisine is going to be opening a third location, with this one also being in the northern suburbs of the city.
According to the Wakefield Patch, Sei Bar plans to open on Water Street in the space where Detorre's Italian Deli and Bella Cucina used to be (a few blocks east of Main Street near the center of town), joining two other locations of the eatery in Everett and Medford. Once it opens, the new restaurant will feature a variety of sushi, sashimi, and maki options, as well as tempura, teriyaki, noodle, rice, Thai curry, and stir-fry dishes. In addition to a sushi bar, the Wakefield location of Sei Bar will also have a bar with beer, wine, and liquor. The article mentions that the Wakefield location of Sei Bar will be opening sometime over the coming months; as soon as a specific opening date is given, we will post an update here.

Downtown Chef Showdown Coming to Petit Robert Central
A culinary event is coming to a dining spot in the Downtown Crossing section of Boston, with three well-known area chefs participating.
An email sent by the restaurant indicates that Petit Robert Central will be hosting the Downtown Chef Showdown on Sunday, June 26 at their Summer Street restaurant in the 101 Arch Street Building. The event will include a cocktail hour that features complimentary appetizers and live DJ sets, followed by the competition itself, where chefs prepare two dishes using a secret ingredient. The dishes will be judged on taste, originality, and presentation, with both the judges and the audience participating in the voting process.
Chefs that will be participating in the Downtown Chef Showdown include Marc Orfaly of Pigalle and Remick's, Marc Thompson of Stoddard's, and Chef Jason Santos of the upcoming restaurant Blue Inc.
Festivities begin at 5:30 P.M.

According to the event's website, the 9th annual Taste of Cambridge will be held at the Charles Hotel on Bennett Street on Tuesday, June 28. [Note: This was supposed to be held on Thursday, June 23, but the forecast is for rain.] The event, which goes from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM, will feature such area dining spots as All Star Sandwich Bar, Amelia's Trattoria, Basha Cafe, Cafe of India, Casablanca Restaurant, Crazy Dough's Pizza, Grafton Street, Jose's Mexican Restaurant, Koreana, Nubar, Sandrine's Bistro, Tory Row, Veggie Planet, and many more. iPic Theaters Looking at Borders Site in Downtown Crossing
A small chain of premium movie theaters that feature upscale dining may be looking to open in Boston's Downtown Crossing where a soon-to close bookstore currently resides.
According to The Boston Herald, iPic Theaters is interested in opening a location in the Boston area, and it seems particularly interested in the site on School Street where Borders is. (The Borders Group, which filed for bankruptcy in February, has been closing many of their locations--including most of their stores in the Boston area--and it appears that the Downtown Crossing location will be closing soon as well.) The Herald mentions that a commercial real estate agent has shown the Borders shop to people from iPic, as well as several other sites in the Boston area, and that there is "preliminary interest" in the Borders space.
iPic, which currently has locations in Arizona, California, Illinois, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin (where it first started out), features stadium seating in their theaters, along with upscale restaurant and bar areas, and in some cases, bowling alleys.

Itadaki Restaurant Is Opening in Boston's Back Bay
A Japanese restaurant is going to be opening in the Back Bay of Boston, moving into the space where an Italian dining spot used to be.
According to EveryBlock Boston, Itadaki Restaurant will be opening on Newbury Street near the Gloucester Street intersection, taking over the former Pazzo spot (Pazzo closed in March after being in business for about two years). Based on limited information from the restaurant's not-yet-complete website as well as a Craigslist jobs posting, Itadaki will be a trendy, upscale place that will feature "great food, cool drinks and amazing hospitality." The Craigslist post mentions that the new restaurant should be opening very soon, though an exact opening date does not seem to be set as of yet.

Let's Talk About Food Festival Coming to Cambridge
The Museum of Science continues their "Let's Talk About Food" initiative this month with an outdoor food festival coming to the Cambridge side of the Charles River.
According to the museum's website, the Let's Talk About Food Festival will be held On Saturday, June 25 along the DCR Cambridge Parkway (behind the Royal Sonesta and next to the Museum of Science itself). The festival will have a number of highlights, including a 600-feet long table where participants and guests will get together; a stage and kitchen where local chefs will take part in cooking demonstrations; a food truck court that includes some of the area's local food vendors; and an ornamental edible garden.
Some of the chefs that will be at the festival include Jody Adams (Rialto), Joanne Chang (Flour and Myers+Chang), Dante de Magistris (Restaurant dante), Charles Draghi (Erbaluce), Mary Dumont (Harvest), and Richard Vellante (Legal Sea Foods).
The Let's Talk About Food Festival activities are free to the public. Please note that the rain date for the festival is Sunday, June 26.

Doc's Long Wharf Might Not Be Opening in Boston After All
About a year and a half ago, we reported that a new restaurant was planned for the Boston waterfront, but this past spring, we mentioned that it was facing resistance by some in the North End. Now it appears that Doc's Long Wharf restaurant may never get off the ground, as a judge has sided with those against the opening of the place.
An article in The Boston Herald states that a Suffolk Superior Court judge has reversed a ruling by the Department of Environmental Protection to award a Chapter 91 license to the eatery, instead ruling on the side of North End residents who were unhappy about the prospect that Doc's would reduce the amount of protected public space on Long Wharf and restrict access to the waterfront. The article mentions that attorneys for the city are looking at the ruling, with the prospects of a possible appeal unknown at this time.
The people behind the proposed Doc's are the same folks who run the Paramount and the 21st Amendment, two restaurants located on Beacon Hill.

Freshii Is Opening in Boston's Financial District
A small chain of health-focused quick-casual restaurants that started out in Canada several years ago is planning to open a new location in the heart of Boston.
According to the Boston Business Journal, Freshii is going to be opening on Federal Street within The Landmark building (by the High Street intersection) in the Financial District, moving into a space across the lobby from Rebecca's. The article mentions that the new dining spot will offer fresh, healthy eats including soups, salads, burritos, wraps, rice and noodle bowls, and frozen yogurt, and it will be a "green" restaurant, with recycled paper and biodegradable packaging used.
Freshii first started out in Toronto in 2005, eventually moving its headquarters to Chicago. There are currently 40 locations in the United States, Canada, Austria, and Dubai. (Currently, the closest Freshii location to Boston is in Manhattan.)
Expect an August opening for Freshii, according to the Boston Business Journal.

According to posters on both Yelp and Chowhound, Grain and Salt on Cambridge Street is now closed. A few weeks ago, one of our Facebook "spotters" who gives us information for our Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook page mentioned that the restaurant was going to be shutting down, though an exact closing date was apparently not known at the time.
Grain and Salt was a tiny two-room spot that first opened in the latter part of 2006, moving into the space where the Vietnamese restaurant Saigon had been. The eatery featured mainly Pakistani cuisine, with a number of Indian dishes as well (including some Indo-Chinese fare). A bakery that has been in Somerville for well over 100 years--and had recently opened two other locations in Cambridge and the North End of Boston--has closed its Boston shop.

(A check on their website seems to have confirmed this, as the only listings for the bakery on the site are in Somerville and Cambridge.) The North End location of Lyndell's first opened in the summer of 2009, with the Central Square location opening on Prospect Street about a year later. The original Lyndell's first opened on Broadway in Somerville's Ball Square in 1887, according to the bakery's website.
Lyndell's features a wide variety of baked goods and pastries, including breads, cookies, cakes, cupcakes, and pies. One of their best-known items is their handmade half moon cookie.

According to their Facebook page, Jalapenos Mexican Restaurant on Commonwealth Avenue shut down this past Saturday, though their Gloucester and Saugus locations will apparently remain open. A dining spot in Fall River that features burgers, hot dogs, and fries is going to be opening another location in Providence.
According to The Herald News, The Ugly American, which is located on New Boston Road in Fall River, is looking to open another branch on Ives Street in the Fox Point section of Providence. The article mentions that the original Ugly American will apparently remain open in Fall River--at least for the time being--as the owner is in talks with the landlord to extend the lease.

Saladworks to Open Three Locations in the Boston Area
Three years after first reporting on their interest in coming to the Boston area (and two years after opening a spot in Cambridge), a restaurant chain that features salads, soups, and sandwiches is planning to open three locations in the area.
According to a Business Wire article, Pennsylvania-based Saladworks has announced an agreement to open three stores in Boston over the coming three years. Once they open, the three Saladworks restaurants will join an existing location at the CambridgeSide Galleria in East Cambridge. Currently, the only other New England locations of Saladworks can be found in Trumbull, CT.
Saladworks, which first started out in 1986 in Cherry Hill, NJ, now has 100 locations in 12 states. Its menu features both create-your-own and signature salads, along with soups, fusion sandwiches, panini, and wraps. The chain's website can be found at http://www.saladworks.com/

Sweet Caroline's Is Opening in the Fenway Section of Boston
The people behind a restaurant in the Financial District of Boston are planning to open a new comfort food spot in the Fenway neighborhood of the city, moving into the space where a Mexican eatery used to be.
According to Universal Hub and Grub Street Boston, Sweet Caroline's is looking to open on Boylston Street, taking over the former Fenway Cantina spot. The Universal Hub article mentions that the owners of the new restaurant, who also run Battery Park Bar & Lounge on Batterymarch Street, are planning to make Sweet Caroline's a dining spot and bar with "sophisticated" American dishes that is much like Battery Park, and that the place would be less of a sports bar than a restaurant.
Universal Hub also states that the Boston Licensing Board expect to approve a full liquor license for Sweet Caroline's today.

Sweet Cheeks Is Opening in Boston's Fenway Neighborhood
It looks like the chef of a now-closed South End restaurant is going to be opening a barbeque spot in the Fenway section of Boston.
According to both Grub Street Boston and BostonChefs.com, Tiffani Faison of Rocca on Harrison Avenue--which closed at the beginning of the year--plans to open Sweet Cheeks on Boylston Street, bringing to the Fenway neighborhood a place to get Southern-style fare that focuses on responsibly-sourced ingredients. BostonChefs.com mentions that the new eatery, which will take over the space where Cambridge 1 currently resides, will have an outdoor patio open during the warmer months, while Grub Street mentions that it will likely be a popular spot for takeout as well.

The Brahmin American Cuisine and Cocktails Is Opening in Boston's Back Bay

A new restaurant is on its way to the Back Bay of Boston, moving into the space where an upscale dining spot and lounge used to be.
According to EveryBlock Boston, a business license has been issued for Brahmin Restaurant and Lounge (now called The Brahmin American Cuisine & Cocktails), which is going to open on Stanhope Street next to Zocalo Cocina Mexicana. The upcoming eatery will take over the spot where 33 Restaurant and Lounge had been for about eight years until closing in the spring of 2010. The City of Boston website mentions that Redbrook Restaurant Group (which runs the trendy Red Sky Restaurant & Lounge near Faneuil Hall) is behind the opening of Brahmin. It appears that the new restaurant will have both indoor and outdoor dining.

A number of restaurants in the Boston area are soon going to be helping folks in the parts of Massachusetts that were hit by last week's devastating tornadoes. Reasons to be Cheerful Is Opening in West Concord
A new dessert cafe and ice cream shop is going to be opening in West Concord, possibly as early as the end of this month.
According to The Boston Globe, a common victualer’s license has been awarded to Reasons to be Cheerful, allowing them to open in the Gatehouse building on Commonwealth Avenue. An earlier Concord Patch article mentioned that the new place will feature 28 ice cream flavors as well as frozen yogurt, pastries, crepes, and coffee.

Andolini's Is Replacing Glory in Andover
The owners of a restaurant in Andover are going to be closing the spot and replacing it with a new Italian eatery after the space goes through renovations.
An email sent to us by the owners indicates that Andolini's will be opening on Essex Street sometime in the middle of the summer, taking over the spot where Glory has been for the past 12 years. According to the email, Glory had become more of a special occasion restaurant, which apparently prompted the idea of a change to a casual Italian restaurant that will likely be more of an everyday spot. The renovations to the space will include white-washed brick, custom wood tables, a fireplace, and a 20-seat bar.
Once it opens, Andolini's will feature such dishes as mozzarella with roasted peppers, bruschetta, thin-crust New York-style pizza, spaghetti tomato basil, spicy zuppa di pesce, and veal chop parmigiana. An all-Italian wine list will also be offered.
The executive chef at Andolini's (Brian Doyle) comes from Mama Maria in the North End of Boston, and is currently working with well-known chef and restaurant owner Michael Schlow.
