A Twitter post (from @jgmahoney (via @thuongtiff) and another tweet from @WriteHandMan indicate that Anh Hong in the Fields Corner neighborhood is no longer in business, with the latter saying "Unexpected issues w/landlord, labor shortage, food costs contributed." The post does indicate that the eatery could possibly return, saying "'I will be back in Dorchester' Victoria Nguyen."

Anh Hong was one of a number of Vietnamese dining spots that called the Fields Corner area home, with the restaurant featuring a menu with a variety of options including hot pot, vermicelli, pho, congee, and more.

The address for Anh Hong was 291 Adams Street, Dorchester, MA, 02122.

Out Of Asia in Saugus Has Closed

A longtime Chinese restaurant on a busy stretch of Route 1 has shut down for good.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook page, Out Of Asia in Saugus is no longer in business, with a post in the Boston's Wicked North Shore Facebook page saying that "After almost 3 decades in business, Out of Asia has permanently closed. The popular restaurant that sat up on the second floor had a loyal following. Many regulars had made weekly stops to dine or socialize at the bar." No reason has been given for the closure of the dining spot, nor is it known what might go into the space; as soon as we find out more, we will post an update here. (Phone calls placed to the restaurant went unanswered this week.)

In addition to Chinese fare, Out of Asia also offered Thai and other Southeast Asian fare.

The address for Out of Asia was 1268 Broadway (Route 1), Saugus, MA, 01906.

Yunnan Kitchen Is Replacing Equator in Boston's South End

It looks like a brand new restaurant featuring dishes from the southwestern part of China will be coming to the South End of Boston, and it would replace a longtime Thai spot.

According to a licensing board hearing page, Yunnan Kitchen is planning to open on Washington Street in the space that has been home to Equator, with a website for the proposed eatery indicating that it apparently has a connection to South of the Clouds, a restaurant in Brighton Center that also features Yunnan fare. (The Yunnan province of China is located near Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam.) Based on the menu at South of the Clouds, it is possible that Yunnan Kitchen could be offering dishes that contain rice noodles (including noodle soup and stir-fried noodles), but a menu has not been seen as of yet.

Equator has been in business for approximately 20 years, offering Thai food along with some Korean dishes.

The address for Yunnan Kitchen (and Equator) is 1721 Washington Street, Boston, MA, 02118. The website for Yunnan Kitchen will be at https://www.yunnankitchensouthend.com/

The original location of Pearl & Lime first opened in Quincy Center last summer, moving into the space on Hancock Street that had been home to a location of KKatie's Burger Bar.

A Number of Boston-Area Restaurants Have Decided to Close Temporarily

Last winter, a surge in Covid cases led to countless dining spots going into what many described as "hibernation," with most reopening in the spring or early summer. A somewhat similar pattern suddenly appears to be taking place this winter due in part to the Omicron variant spreading quickly through the region, though the closures tend to be shorter term than last year, at least for now.

According to multiple sources, including posters within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group pages, a large number of restaurants and bars are either shuttered temporarily or will soon be doing so, with the timeframes being varied, including some places closing until after Christmas, others saying that they plan to reopen after the start of the new year, and still others saying that they hope to open later in the winter while some simply state that they are closed indefinitely. The reasons for the closures are varied as well, with some of the reasons including workers testing positive for Covid, a general slowdown in business, a long-needed vacation during the holidays, and a watch-and-wait situation concerning the possibility of grants/loans being brought back for businesses that have been hurt by the pandemic.

The number of restaurants temporarily closing is in constant flux right now, as are the dates of their reopenings (and for those still open, their hours), so the best bet right now is to call dining spots in advance to find out more on their exact status.

A couple of days ago, it was reported that a popular pizzeria in Medford had shut down. Now we have learned that another pizza spot in Somerville will be making a move--and it will be taking over the Medford space.

Espresso Pizza in Medford Has Closed

A pizzeria that was popular with college students has shut down.

According to a poster within the Friends Of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Espresso Pizza in Medford is no longer in business, with a Facebook post from the Boston Avenue spot indicating that it closed its doors on Saturday. A post on its Facebook page from Friday says the following:

My brother, Anthony Salvato Jr. bought Espresso Pizza in the 1970s. Espresso Pizza has been a staple in the community for decades. Anthony worked hard to create an established business and provide for his cherished family. He went above and beyond for the community and those in need. When he passed away, I was determined to keep his legacy alive. After 9 great but long and exhausting years, I will be retiring and Espresso pizza will be permanently closing. Espresso Pizza and its employees would like to extend our gratitude to our family, friends and valued customers. It has been a pleasure to serve our community over the years but we are getting old and tired. Thank you for your continued support. We will miss everyone!"

In addition to pizza, Espresso--which was located across the street from Tufts University--also served salads, sandwiches, grill items, and calzones.

Mayor Michelle Wu Announces Vaccination Proof Mandate for Boston Restaurants

The city of Boston will soon have a new policy in place for restaurants--and one that other cities and towns across the country have already instituted as the coronavirus numbers start to spike.

In her press conference on Monday morning, Mayor Michelle Wu announced that people will need to prove that they have been vaccinated in order to do indoor dining at Boston restaurants and bars, with proof of at least one dose required starting on January 15 for customers aged 12 and up (along with restaurant/bar workers), and two doses starting on February 15. Mayor Wu's announcement comes as the number of coronavirus cases are increasing once again in Boston and elsewhere, with cases of the Omicron variant rising rapidly.

Proof of vaccination can include a COVID-19 vaccine card, a copy of the card or a photo of it, a copy of any official immunization record, a City-designated app with a picture of any official immunization record, or another COVID-19 vaccine verification app.

New York City is one of a number of cities/towns in the United States that has already set a vaccine card mandate for restaurants in place.

Boss Bah Pizza Is Opening in South Braintree Square in the Former Yogurt Bar Space

A new dining spot that features a South Shore staple is on its way to a space that had been home to a frozen yogurt shop.

A check on the space this week indicates that Boss Bah Pizza is planning to open in South Braintree Square, moving into the space on Washington Street that had been home to The Yogurt Bar. We have been told by Richard Nuzzo of Little Richie's Antiques (which is just down the road on Hancock Street) that a website for the place is up, with a check on the site indicating that it may be a takeout bar pizza place, saying "Boston South Shore Bar Pizza – Just as great without the wait!" and "Boston South Shore Bar Pizza at its best….without the bar."

Currently, most establishments that serve bar pizza south of Boston are either bars or full-service restaurants, with a couple of exceptions being Ultimate Pizza in Easton and Crisp in Walpole, which both tend to focus at least in part on takeout.

The Building Housing Bocelli's in South Medford Is for Sale

Three years ago, it looked like the future of a popular Italian restaurant might be in question, as a developer was considering replacing its building with a new structure. Now we have learned that the future of the dining spot may be in question once again.

According to a source, the building in South Medford that houses Bocelli's is for sale, with a Redfin post saying that the Main Street restaurant would be part of the sale and that "All restaurant furnishings, equipment, food/drink inventory" would be included. Back in 2018, a proposal had been given that would demolish a strip of businesses in the block in which Bocelli's resides, replacing it with an apartment complex on the ground floor, but the plans never came to fruition.

Bocelli's is an old-fashioned Italian restaurant that is known in part for its basement dining room; the space had formerly been home to DePasquale's, another old-school dining spot featuring Italian food.

The address for Bocelli's is 374 Main Street, Medford, MA, 02155.

Coppersmith in South Boston to Close January 16

Back in 2019, it was looking like a South Boston restaurant, bar, and events space was facing an uncertain future due to new development. Now we have learned that the end is drawing near for the place.

According to a press release, Coppersmith on 3rd Street is shutting down on Sunday, January 16 after six years in business, with a statement from General Manager Sheila Senat saying the following:

We've been fortunate to remain open for much of these past two years, which was unexpected and a blessing....It gave us the opportunity to spend a couple more trips around the sun with our amazing guests, who have become like family, and for our beloved team to retain employment during an incredibly difficult time in the hospitality industry. It is bittersweet to finally say goodbye, but the happy memories of Coppersmith will live on for so many.

In January of 2019, it was announced that Coppersmith could see its warehouse building demolished to make way for a life sciences building, and while it looked like the dining spot might have to shut down in early 2020, that was extended to late 2020, and then it was able to remain open in 2021 due to delays in the transition.

The address for Coppersmith is 40 West 3rd street, South Boston, MA, 02127. Its website is at https://www.coppersmithboston.com/

Toscanini's Ice Cream Is Reopening in Cambridge's Central Square on January 1, 2022

A popular ice cream shop in Cambridge that has been closed for nearly four years is on the verge of returning to its space.

According to a couple of sources, Toscanini's is reopening in its old space on the eastern edge of Central Square on January 1, with a Facebook post from the Main Street shop saying that it will be the "same beloved space, same small batch ice cream.. but this time with a selfie wall. There's no better way to kick off 2022 than with a cone or cup in hand.. especially where it all began! Thank you to our community [whose] loyalty and love for Toscanini's made this possible. We love you all and look forward to serving you for many years to come."

Toscanini's closed its original location in early 2018, as its building was being turned into a boutique hotel called 907 Main that is now open--and home to two dining spots called The Dial and The Blue Owl. A second location of the ice cream shop opened on First Street in East Cambridge around the time that the Central Square location shut down.

The website for Toscanini's can be found at https://www.tosci.com/

[December 30 update: The official reopening of Toscanini's in Central Square may be January 1, but based on a tweet from the place, it has actually opened its doors already.]

Hummus v'Hummus Is Opening at The Street Chestnut Hill

Several months ago, it was reported that a well-known local chef was opening a new dining spot at an open-air marketplace in Brighton. Now we have learned that a second location is in the works as well.

Both a Facebook post and a message sent by Avi Shemtov indicates that Hummus v'Hummus is planning to open at The Street Chestnut Hill, moving into a space next to Star Market. This outlet will be joining another at the Charles River Speedway on Western Avenue in Brighton, with both featuring hummus bowls with a daily rotating list of toppings, including smoked meats and veggies--and they will be combining ideas from Shemtov's Chubby Chickpea food truck along with his two restaurants. Based on a Facebook comment from Shemtov, it looks like the Chestnut Hill location could be opening early next year if all goes well.

Avi Shemtov's Instagram page can be found at https://www.instagram.com/chefavishemtov/

[September 30 update: According to a Facebook post, Hummus v'Hummus soft-opened this week at The Street Chestnut Hill, with its grand opening taking place next Thursday.]

Lockheart Is Opening in Wellesley

A new restaurant with Southwestern influences is hoping to open in the western suburbs.

According to an article from The Swellesley Report, Lockheart is planning on opening on Central Street in Wellesley Square, with Derek Brady--who has been involved with such spots as Union Street, Causeway, Osushi, and The Draft--being behind it. The post mentions that the upcoming eatery will be a "southwestern-themed tacos-plus restaurant" and that it received approval to open from a "wary" Select Board in which board members were concerned about violations that restaurants Brady has been involved in have received. Brady did stress that he wanted to focus on being able to operate a suburban family restaurant, saying that "it's difficult to run a lot of the restaurants that I have but that's not the type of area that I think we're looking at to do something here and that's not the type of restaurant that I'm looking to do in this town....They're two different animals."

The address for Lockheart in Wellesley Square is 102 Central Street, Wellesley, MA, 02482. Its website can be found at https://lockheartwellesley.com/

[July 15, 2022 update: According to a source, Lockheart is now open, with its menu including a variety of tacos along with salads, bowls, snacks, and large plates.]

Park 54 Is Opening in the Former Fairmount Grille Space in Hyde Park

A new restaurant is on its way to Hyde Park, moving into a space where a two-story dining spot had been.

According to a couple of sources, including a message from Adam Gaffin of Universal Hub, Park 54 is planning to open in the former Fairmount Grille space on Fairmount Avenue, with the website for the upcoming restaurant saying the following:

"Park 54" is inspired by the life and service of the men who served in the 54th Regiment - a volunteer infantry comprised of free Black American male soldiers. The regiment was established in Readsville, MA, now known as "Hyde Park." Despite the backlash the men received for fighting in a "white man's war" each of them bravely risked their lives for the freedom and betterment of their families, community, and country. Our mission is to continue the legacy of the historical 54th Regiment by creating a safe haven in which our beloved community of Hyde Park and the neighboring towns, can experience the freedom, happiness, and the fullness of self expression the 54th Regiment fought for. Our intention is to accomplish this by offering great food, innovative libations, incredible music, compelling historical artifacts, and an inviting ambience!

The people behind Park 54 are co-owners Tasha Hull and Andre Walker, Sr., along with managing partner Shawn Hunter (Darryl's Corner Bar & Kitchen, Slade's Bar and Grill).

Fairmount Grill closed in 2019 after being in business for approximately six years; the space had also been home to Townsends as well.

The address for Park 54 is 81 Fairmount Avenue, Hyde Park, MA, 02136. Its website can be found at https://park54restaurant.com/

[May 16, 2022 update: A new message from Adam Gaffin indicates that Park 54 soft-opened this weekend, with a Facebook post from the page showing such items (this weekend only) as wings, a catfish sandwich, calamari, street corn, and street tacos.]

Moeca Plans to Replace Luce in Cambridge

[Ed note: This article was updated on December 9 to reflect more information given on the restaurant, including a name change.]

A neighborhood restaurant in Cambridge that was known for its Italian dishes may be replaced by a new dining spot.

According to an article from Cambridge Day, a restaurant tentatively called Barca is planning to open on Shepard Street in the space that has been home to Luce since early 2019. The post mentions that Michael Pagliarini and Pamela Ralston, the husband-and-wife team behind the nearby Giulia, would be behind the new restaurant; Pagliarini and Ralston had also operated Benedetto within The Charles Hotel until it lost its lease this spring.

The space in which the new dining spot is planning to open had also been home to Shepard, and before that, Chez Henri.

The address for the proposed new restaurant (and the former Luce) is 1 Shepard Street, Cambridge, MA, 02138.

[December 9 update: Cambridge Day states that the new dining spot will now be called Moeca and that it will focus on seafood, and if all goes as planned, it could be opening in March of 2022.]

Ben & Jerry's to Open in Cambridge's Porter Square

A popular ice cream company with roots up north is opening a new shop in Cambridge.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, a hiring sign for Ben & Jerry's is now up in the old Emack & Bolio's space within the Porter Square Shopping Center, though the sign shows "Harvard Square" on it. An earlier Cambridge Day article mentioned that Ben & Jerry's would indeed be coming to Porter Square, and it now appears that the Harvard Square outlet might planning to reopen as well, possibly in a new location within the square (as soon as we find out more about that location, we will post an update here).

The Vermont-based Ben & Jerry's has a handful of locations in the Greater Boston area, including in the Back Bay (two), Faneuil Hall, the Seaport District, Watertown, Braintree, and Natick, along with a kiosk by the New England Aquarium.

The Superette Is Planning to Open in Boston's Seaport District

A new development that will apparently include multiple restaurants is on its way to the Boston waterfront.

According to an article in Boston Magazine, The Superette is planning to open on the lower two floors of the EchelonSeaport, a luxury condo complex on Seaport Boulevard in the Seaport District. The article says that the upcoming development will be "based on 'intimate' European squares" and that it will include 125,000 square feet of retail space with 40 stores, dining spots, and entertainment venues, all centered around a tree-shaded outdoor courtyard that has public seating.

A couple of dining-related tenants that will be coming to The Superette include Puttshack, which will be a high-tech mini-golf spot with food offered (and which was briefly mentioned in an earlier article here), and the New York-based Garrett Bars, which are speakeasy-style cocktail lounges. (More dining/drinking spots will be mentioned over the coming months.)
