J.P. Licks to Start Selling Hemp-Based Ice Cream

A local group of ice cream cafes is getting ready to introduce a new line of flavors that will include an ingredient that may raise some eyebrows.

According to the Somerville blog of Wicked Local, J.P. Licks is going to be rolling out a line of hemp-based ice cream that will be dairy-free, with the ice cream being introduced in April. Hemp, which is part of the cannabis family (the same family that includes plants used for marijuana), has seeds that are edible and can be used in a variety of ways, including for baking, tea, and (apparently) ice cream.

The Wicked Local article also mentions that a coconut cream-based line of dairy-free ice cream is being introduced by J.P. Licks shortly, as will a soy-based dairy-free line in June. All of the dairy-free ice creams will be vegan, Kosher, gluten-free, vegan, and sweetened with agave and brown rice syrups, according to the blog entry.

J.P. Licks first started out in Jamaica Plain in 1981 and now can be found in JP, the Back Bay, Mission Hill, Harvard Square, Coolidge Corner, Davis Square, West Roxbury, Newton Centre, Wellesley, Dedham, and soon, Beacon Hill. Their website is at http://www.jplicks.com/
