Chau Chow City Space in Boston's Chinatown Is for Lease

by Marc Hurwitz

Several months ago, we reported that a longtime favorite in Chinatown was closing, though it looked like a new restaurant would be moving into the space. Now it appears that this may have fallen through.

According to a tweet from @megansarahj, a sign is now posted at the former Chau Chow City space on Essex Street saying that the storefront is available, with a contact number and email address for a real estate company included. Back in June, a source sent us a photo indicating that a new hot pot and sushi place was hoping to open in the space, but it look like this did not end up working out.

Chau Chow City first opened on Beach Street in 1985, moving to Essex Street approximately 12 years later; the restaurant closed down at the end of April as its lease was up and the landlord was apparently raising the rent. Another location of the dining spot remains in operation on Morrissey Boulevard in Dorchester.

The address for Chau Chow City was 83 Essex Street, Boston, MA, 02111.
