It looks like a location of a local group of Mexican spots that has been expanding of late has shut down.

According to multiple sources, including a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Anna's Taqueria at Northeastern University in Boston is no longer in operation, with a check on the website for the business indicating that the location in the public food court inside the Marino Recreation Center has indeed been removed from the site. The dining spot first opened last year in the space where b.good had formerly been; other locations that debuted over the past couple of years in downtown Boston, South Boston, Dedham, Natick, and Woburn do remain open for business. (A number of other outlets of Anna's can be found in the Greater Boston area as well.)

Sunrise Cafe Bagels and Diner to Open in the Former Papa Gino's Space in Hyde Park

It looks like a new dining spot that will focus at least in part on breakfast is on its way to a Boston neighborhood.

According to an article from Universal Hub, Sunrise Cafe Bagels and Diner is planning to open in Hyde Park, moving into the space in Cleary Square that had been home to a location of Papa Gino's. It appears that the 34-seat eatery will be open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner based on its proposed hours, though a sign out front features breakfast items including bagels, bagel sandwiches, and coffee.

Hawksmoor Opens in Boston's Fort Point

Earlier this year, it was reported that a small chain of steakhouses and cocktail bars with roots overseas was planning to open a location in Boston, and now we have learned that it is up and running.

According to its website and social media, Hawksmoor is now open in the city's Fort Point neighborhood, moving into a space within the Eli Lilly research and development center on Necco Street. The website for the London-based chain says the following of the Boston location:

Space for around 200 guests, sweeping views across the Fort Point Channel, and a big outdoor terrace made for long lunches, celebratory dinners, a few too many martinis and everything in between. What started as a single restaurant in London has grown into fifteen across the UK, Ireland and the US, including Dublin, New York and Chicago. Boston is the newest, and it opens in our twentieth year, which feels pretty special. Every Hawksmoor reflects the city it calls home. Boston is no different. The best of London. The best of Boston. Together at last.

Hawksmoor (which was a James Beard semifinalist for Best Beverage Program in 2025) was first established in London in 2006 and currently has two other locations in the United States--in New York City and Chicago.

Brookline Lunch in Cambridge to Expand, Opening in the Former L Street Diner Space in South Boston

A longtime diner in Cambridge will soon be joined by a second location.

According to a source, the people behind Brookline Lunch in Central Square will be opening another outlet in South Boston, moving into the space on L Street where the L Street Diner had been. An Instagram post from the business says the following:

...after 37 years—we have a new, second space to share in Southie! This not-so-secret project has been underway for four months and we can't wait to open our doors for you. We're racing toward opening and hope to serve our first plates in the next week(ish) ... TBA. We've also given the place a face lift (w new signs) so stay tuned for the reveal! We've been extra nostalgic as we take this step forward and know that no place will ever create the magic and memories like the original Brookline Lunch.

Brookline Lunch first opened in Cambridge 37 years ago, being known in part for its breakfast plates and Mediterranean fare.

Tori Japan to Open Locations by Boston University, Malden, and Taunton

Last week, it was reported that a small group of Japanese restaurants would be expanding to a Boston neighborhood, and now we have learned that they will be opening three other locations in the region as well.

According to an article from What Now Boston, Tori Japan is planning to open locations by Boston University, Malden, and Taunton, with the three new spots joining another upcoming location in Dorchester's Ashmont area. The article mentions that it looks like the first to open will be the BU location which will take over the former Boston Halal space on Commonwealth Avenue and which could debut later this month, while Malden and Taunton are slated to open later this year and Dorchester in 2027.

Expect all the new locations of Tori Japan to feature teppanyaki, sushi, and bento boxes, and they will join existing locations in the Back Bay, East Boston, Jamaica Plain, Hyde Park, Chelsea, Saugus, Randolph, and Brockton, along with others in Providence, Central Falls, RI, and the original in Bridgewater Township, NJ. French Quarter in Downtown Boston Has Closed

A restaurant in the heart of Boston that featured traditional New Orleans dishes has shut down.

According to multiple sources, French Quarter on Washington Street is no longer in business, with an Instagram post from the dining spot saying the following:

To our guests, thank you for walking through our doors, celebrating with us, and making French Quarter part of your nights in Boston. You gave this restaurant its life and its meaning. To our staff, past and present, thank you for the care, hard work, humor, patience, and heart you gave to this place. French Quarter was never just the room or the menu. It was the people who made it feel alive....we are deeply grateful for every guest, every team member, and every memory made here. It has been an honor to serve you.

French Quarter first opened in downtown Boston six years ago, moving into the space where a location of Salvatore's had once been; its menu offered such options as red beans and rice, gumbo, jambalaya, shrimp and grits, crawfish etouffee, cornbread, and more.

A new dining spot that focuses on fried foods has come to downtown Boston.

According to an article from boston.com, Boston Fry House is now open in Chinatown, moving into a space on Kneeland Street between Harrison Avenue and Washington Street. The menu for the new restaurant offers such items as chicken tenders, fried clams, chicken nuggets, calamari, burgers, wings, haddock nuggets, french fries, onion rings, cheese bites, fried pickles, and more.

Leonardo's Bar Ristorante to Open in West Roxbury

A new Italian restaurant is on its way to a Boston neighborhood, and it has a family connection to a familiar name.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Leonardo's Bar Ristorante is planning to open in West Roxbury, moving into the space on the VFW Parkway that had been home to Mission on Fire, and before that, Sofia's, Vintage, and Fontaine's. A job post within the Zip Recruiter website indicates that Leonardo Testa, who is the son of restaurateur Vinny Testa, is behind the upcoming dining spot, saying that "He has all his father's recipe's and has updated all of them to today in 2026. Many of his father's old favorites are here plus many new ones." The listing also says the following:

We are a restaurant reminiscent of the family-style Italian restaurants found in lower Manhattan, Brooklyn from the 1940's with modern cooking techniques and flavors. We welcome our guests with open arms, lavishing attentive service, along with the familiar, comforting Southern Italian specialties. Abundant portions for all but "family-style" dining we offer for any size party. We specialize in sharing all our food. Our atmosphere is with rich woods and decorative interiors with red and blacked tablecloths; hand painted murals, photos and Italian artifacts cover the walls. If approved, the new 30-seat location would feature teppanyaki, sushi, and bento boxes, and it would join others in the Back Bay, East Boston, Jamaica Plain, Hyde Park, Chelsea, Saugus, Randolph, and Brockton, along with others in Providence, Central Falls, RI, and the original in Bridgewater Township, NJ.

The Union Oyster House May Be Going Through an Ownership Change

It looks like one of Boston's best-known restaurants could be getting a new owner.

According to a licensing board hearing page within the city's website, the parent company of the Union Oyster House (Union Oyster House, Inc.) has petitioned to transfer its license to UOH Manager, LLC, with the Union Oyster House name slated to remain the same. The notice mentions that the manager is listed as Kathleen Street, while a check on Bizapedia indicates that UOH Manager, LLC is a domestic limited-liability company organized under the laws of the State of Texas and that its registered agent/principal is Steven L Scheinthal, who is Executive Vice President and General Counsel at Landry's, Inc. Based on information received from Adam Gaffin of Universal Hub, the company behind Landry's (and other dining spots including Morton's) currently owns another historic local restaurant--the Chart House on Boston's Long Wharf--along with other Chart House locations, though it is not known whether UOH Manager, LLC would be part of Landry's, Inc or as a separate subsidiary of Fertitta Entertainment, which owns Landry's.

The Union Oyster House is one of Boston's oldest restaurants, having debuted back in 1826; it can be found at 41 Union Street just north of Faneuil Hall.

The Sports Bra to Open in Boston's Financial District

Last spring, it was reported that a bar with roots in the Pacific Northwest that focuses on women's sports would be expanding to Boston, and now we know where exactly it plans to open.

According to a licensing board hearing page, The Sports Bra is looking to open in the city's Financial District, with the address indicating that it would be moving into a space within the One India Street Apartments between India Street and Broad Street where they both meet State Street. The notice mentions that the upcoming spot would have a main dining area, a main bar, and a private dining room, as well as a seasonal outdoor patio, and based on its original location in Portland, OR, expect it to offer scratch-made food including vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and dairy-free options, along with beer, cider, wine, cocktails, and mocktails, while also showing women's sports on TV.

The Sports Bra, which debuted in Portland in the spring of 2022, is planning to open other locations in Maine, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, and St. Louis in addition to Boston.

Fresh Boston in South Boston Has Closed

The South Boston location of a trio of upscale delis and specialty food shops has shut down.

According to an article from Caught in Southie, Fresh Boston on Old Colony Avenue is no longer in operation, with an Instagram post from the place saying the following:

Hi Southie — After nearly four incredible years, we've made the difficult decision to temporarily close the doors of Fresh Boston. This isn't the ending we hoped for. Like so many small businesses, the challenges of the last few years proved greater than we could overcome. We poured everything we had into this restaurant, and while this chapter is coming to an end, we are incredibly proud of what we built together.

The South Boston location of the business first opened in late 2022, joining its original location on Nantucket; both the Nantucket location and the newer Cambridge location at CambridgeSide will remain in operation.

Bottega Cannuccia to Open in the Former Homestead Cafe Space in Dorchester's Fields Corner

The chef/owner of an Italian restaurant in Dorchester will be opening a second spot nearby.

According to an article in The Boston Globe, Stefano Quaresima of Via Cannuccia, which is on Dorchester Avenue between Fields Corner and Ashmont, is planning to open Bottega Cannuccia in the former Homestead Cafe space in Fields Corner (and also on Dorchester Avenue), with this place being an Italian bakery-cafe by day and a wine bar by night. The new spot will have seating for 30 and it will offer pastries, coffee, and sandwiches in the daytime and small plates and wine in the evening.

If all goes well, Bottega Cannuccia could be opening as soon as December.

Session House Plans to Open in the Former Scobie's Cafe & Bar Space in Dorchester

A new Irish pub is coming to a space just off the Southeast Expressway, and it will be replacing another Irish pub.

According to an article from the Dorchester Reporter, Session House is planning to open in the Adams Village neighborhood of Dorchester, taking over the former Scobie's Cafe & Bar space by the corner of Adams Street and Gallivan Boulevard. The article mentions that the upcoming spot will focus in part on live music (including traditional Irish music) and that it will offer elevated pub fare along with craft beer, wine, whiskey, and cocktails. If all goes as planned, Session House could be opening this fall.

Scobie's, which first opened in the summer of 2024, temporarily closed in February of this year for renovations, but apparently never reopened.

Achilito's Taqueria to Open in the Former Little Steve's Pizzeria Space in Boston's Back Bay/Fenway Area

A local group of Mexican restaurants will be expanding to a new location in Boston, moving into a space that had been home to a pizzeria that closed earlier this year.

According to a message sent from Adam Castiglioni of @conciergeboston.bsky.social (via a Bluesky post from @copleyscott17.bsky.social), Achilito's Taqueria is planning to open in the city's Back Bay/Fenway area, taking over the former Little Steve's Pizzeria space on Boylston Street (a sign is currently up for the place out front). Once it opens, the new location of the eatery will join others in the Forest Hills section of Jamaica Plain, Cambridge's Harvard Square, and Patriot Place in Foxboro, and it will likely offer such items as tacos, burritos, quesadillas, flautas, enchiladas, tostadas, and more.

Little Steve's Pizzeria shut down sometime around the beginning of 2026 after being in business since the spring of 2025; it had opened in the space where the original Little Steve's Pizzeria had been from 1968 until closing a few years ago. (The two versions of the place had different ownership.)

Sweet Cheeks Q and Fool's Errand in Boston's Fenway Neighborhood Are Both Closing

A couple of dining and drinking spots from one of Boston's best-known chefs/restaurateurs will be shutting down.

According to an article from boston.com, Tiffani Faison is going to be closing Sweet Cheeks Q and Fool's Errand in the city's Fenway neighborhood as she has decided not to renew the lease for the two places, with Faison saying the following in the article:

It's been 15 years, and this is a heartbreaking victory lap for us, and for the city, and for our team....A restaurant staying open for 15 years, full stop, is nearly impossible. So to be able to make it this far, it's been the honor of my life. [Sweet Cheeks] is my first baby, and this is one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make....It is cost-prohibitive to have restaurants now....Right now, we're paying for fuel charges that are in addition to what we already pay because the Strait of Hormuz is closed and gas is heinously expensive. And we are paying tariffs on things that come from other countries. And then there are things that are just expensive anyway. The price of food has gone up. We pay a fair wage and that is really hard to do."

Faison says that both Sweet Cheeks (which focuses on barbecue) and Fool's Errand (which offers bar snacks, wine, and cocktails, and which shares the same liquor license as Sweet Cheeks) will be closing after business hours on November 24.

Pomona Cafe & Wine Bar Opens in East Boston

Early this year, it was reported that a dining spot with Colombian influences was finally getting close to opening after being in the works for a long time, and now we have learned that it is up and running.

According to an article in Boston Magazine, Pomona Cafe & Wine Bar is now open in East Boston, moving into a space on Meridian Street in the Maverick Square area. The article mentions that the new spot offers Colombian and other Latin American fare and is a cafe by day and a wine bar by night, with breakfast/brunch served along with small and large plates, while cocktails are available as well.

Another location of Pomona (which is loosely affiliated) can be found in Swampscott, while one had also been in Winthrop but it is closed.

Dumpling Center Has Opened in the Former Dumpling Palace Space in Boston's Back Bay

A new spot for dumplings and more has come to Boston, and it replaces another dumpling spot.

According to a poster (Drew Starr) within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Dumpling Center is now open in the Back Bay, moving into the space on Massachusetts Avenue that had previously been home to Dumpling Palace. The post indicates that the menu at the new eatery is similar to that of its predecessor (though the place has different ownership), with offerings on its website including handmade dumplings, buns, noodles, sizzling dry wok specialties, and mala hot pot.

Dumpling Palace first opened in 2014, replacing Nan Ling.

Marzae Cellar + Provisions Opens at Boston Public Market

Earlier this year, it was reported that the people the first and only natural winery in Massachusetts would be bringing a tasting room to downtown Boston, and now we have learned that it is up and running. 

According to a press release, Marzae Cellar + Provisions has soft-opened at Boston Public Market, with the place having nearly 100 seats including full-service dining tables, lounge areas, and bar seating and offering natural wines, aperitifs, and seasonal dishes with locally-sourced ingredients, including both small and large plates. (A retail section is also within the space, selling such options as chocolates, cheeses, charcuterie, vinegars, hot sauces, bitters, and shrubs.)

Husband-and-wife team Eliot Martin and Kate Lucai are behind Marzae, which started out in Acton in 2023.

According to a source, Johnny Boy is planning to open a brick-and-mortar shop in Fort Point, moving into a space on Summer Street. The website for the business seems to confirm this, saying "coming soon" to Summer Street while showing photos of an indoor space.

Johnny Boy has been doing popups in the Greater Boston area, offering such options as breakfast sandwiches, fried chicken sandwiches, veggie sandwiches, chicken bites, and tamarind tots.
