Danish Coffee Studio Replaces Danish Pastry House in Medford

A cafe popular with college students has been replaced by a new cafe with a slightly different name and different ownership.

According to an article in The Tufts Daily, Danish Coffee Studio has taken over the former Danish Pastry House space in Medford, with the latter closing for renovations last month and the former debuting earlier this month. The article mentions that Danish Pastry House owner Ulla Winkler sold both the Boston Avenue cafe and the corresponding wholesale location in Watertown to Benjamin Morales and his family, with the focus of the new place being at least in part on specialty lattes and pastries.

Danish Pastry House had been in the space since 2005.

The address for Danish Coffee Studio is 330 Boston Avenue, Medford, MA, 02155. Its Instagram page can be found at https://www.instagram.com/danishcoffeestudio/

Uchi to Open in Boston's Fort Point Neighborhood

A group of high-end Japanese restaurants with roots in Texas--and whose chef/founder is a James Beard award winner--will be expanding to Boston.

According to a post in Nation's Restaurant News, Uchi is planning to open in the Fort Point section of the city, moving into a space on Congress Street sometime in 2027 that will include seating for 210 people, 11 at a sushi counter, 17 at a bar, and 26 in a private dining room. Based on other locations, expect to see "elevated non‑traditional Japanese cuisine" with options being nigiri/sashimi, deep-fried dishes such as tempura, veggie items such as edamame and shishito, and bluefin specials--and tasting menus will likely be offered as well.

In 2003, the first Uchi opened in Austin, with Tyson Cole being Executive Chef and co-owner, and Cole won (in a tie) the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest in 2011. The restaurant is part of Hai Hospitality, which also runs Uchiko (Japanese farmhouse cuisine), Uchiba (an izakaya-styled cocktail bar), Oheya (an omakase tasting room), and Loro (an Asian smokehouse).

The address for the upcoming Uchi in Fort Point is 374 Congress Street, Boston, MA, 02210. The website for the business is at https://uchi.uchirestaurants.com/

Niveaux Pâtisserie Is Expanding, Opening a New Location in Boston's Financial District

A French patisserie just south of Boston appears to be expanding to a second location, and this one will be in the heart of the city.

According to a source, Niveaux Pâtisserie in North Quincy is apparently expanding to the Financial District of Boston, with an Instagram reel from Robert Gonzalez of the bakery-cafe showing him outside a storefront along State Street. A Toast page for Niveaux indeed shows a second location at 75 State Street that isn't yet taking online orders, while the reel's video indicates that the new location plans to open early next year.

In addition to Niveaux Pâtisserie (which first opened on Hancock Street in North Quincy in the summer of 2024), Gonzalez is also involved with Masons Steakhouse in Quincy Center.

The website for Niveaux Pâtisserie can be found at https://www.niveauxpatisserie.com/

Gen Korean BBQ Plans to Open in Cambridge's Harvard Square

Last year, it was reported that a chain of Korean barbecue spots was hoping to expand to Allston, and now we have learned that the chain is planning to expand to Cambridge, though the status of the Allston location is now in question.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Gen Korean BBQ House is planning to open in Harvard Square, confirming an earlier article from the Cambridge Somerville Independent that said the plans were "on pause" back in May because of concerns about how customers would be grilling their own food, including whether open flames would be involved. An update to the article states that the pause ultimately ended after conversations took place between fire inspectors and the business owners.

As reported here in August of 2025, a location of the Gen Korean BBQ House chain--which was established in Los Angeles in 2011--was being planned for Harvard Avenue in Allston, but it still hasn't opened, and a new licensing board hearing page within the City of Boston website indicates that its liquor license may be transferred to a proposed location of Taco Bell Cantina near Faneuil Hall.

The address for the upcoming Gen Korean BBQ House in Harvard Square is 26 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA, 02138. The website for the chain is at https://www.genkoreanbbq.com/

Clementine to Replace The Garrison House in Brookline Village

A new restaurant is on its way to Brookline, and it will be replacing a dining spot that has been around for about five years.

According to an article from The Brookline News, Clementine is planning to open in the space in Brookline Village where The Garrison House currently resides, with Mathew Freid (who was behind the now-closed Idle Hour in Quincy) being the owner. Very little is known about the upcoming place other than the fact that it plans to have seating for 128 inside and 32 outside and that it hopes to be open until 1:00 AM on weekends; more should be known soon (a hearing on the plans is slated for today), so stay tuned for updates.

The Garrison House debuted in late 2021, replacing Magnolia Smokehouse; Hawkeye Hospitality (Elm Street Taproom, Five Horses Tavern, The Chester Tavern) is behind the spot, which is known in part for its classic American fare and pub food.

The address for the upcoming Clementine (and Garrison House) is 6 Harvard Square, Brookline, MA, 02445.

An award-winning group of Chinese restaurants based in New York City that is known in part for their hand-pulled noodles is expanding to the heart of Boston.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Xi'an Famous Foods is planning to open in Downtown Crossing, with the poster (and the photo shown with a sign up for the place) indicating that it will be moving into the space on Washington Street that had been home to a location of b.good. This will be the first brick-and-mortar location of the eatery to come to the local area, though it isn't their first foray into Boston as there had been a ghost kitchen that debuted on Shirley Street in Roxbury last year that is no longer in operation. Mochiko Hawaiian Has Opened Back Up at Boston Landing in Brighton

Last week, it was reported that a pair of restaurants known in part for their fried chicken and bubble tea had closed down, but now it appears that one of the locations has returned.

According to an Instagram post from the business along with its website, Mochiko Hawaiian reopens their Boston Landing location in Brighton today, with the post saying the following:

Regular service resumes October 6. Thank you for your patience during our brief pause—we truly appreciate your support and can't wait to welcome you! Mochiko Hawaiian Brighton at Boston Landing

The post doesn't say anything about the Newtonville location, and the Instagram page only shows the Boston Landing location so it appears that Newtonville will not be opening back up, at least for now.

A few days ago, Mochiko posted a note on their website that said "It was fun while it lasted. We enjoyed our time together + we tried hard to save it. Ultimately, we could not. Love the fam we built + we will miss you all." It is not known what decisions were made that resulted in the Brighton location to return.

The address for Mochiko Hawaiian at Boston Landing is 133 Guest Street, Brighton, MA, 02135. Its website can be found at https://www.mochikohawaiian.com/
