Margaritaville Opens at Faneuil Hall in Boston

Three years ago, it was reported that a legendary singer-songwriter was opening a location of his restaurant chain in Boston, and now we have learned it has debuted, though it opened two months after he passed away.

According to a message sent from Adam Castiglioni of the Boston Hospitality and Tourism Industry Blog, Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville is now open  at Faneuil Hall, moving into the space that had once been home to McCormick & Schmick's. The restaurant includes a bar area on the first floor, a tiki bar on the second floor, and an outdoor space during the warmer months, and the menu includes such options as Caribbean chicken egg rolls, garlic shrimp, fish and chips, crab cakes, coconut shrimp, jambalaya, jerk salmon, burgers, clam po'boys, key lime pie, and more, along with margaritas, "boat drinks," beer, and wine.

Jimmy Buffett, who died in September at the age of 76, was known for such songs as "Margaritaville," "Come Monday," "Son of a Son of a Sailor," "He Went to Paris," and "Cheeseburger in Paradise."

Apex Bar and Lounge to Open in Boston's Financial District

It looks like a new cocktail bar and lounge is on its way to downtown Boston, and it will apparently be part of a multi-concept cannabis dispensary with a former mayoral candidate behind it.

According to a licensing board page within the city's website, Apex Bar and Lounge is planning to open in the Financial District, taking over at least part of the space on State Street that had been home to Little Rose Taco Bar, and before that, Kamakura. An earlier Dig Boston article mentioned that Tito Jackson is behind the place, which, according to a media statement, is called Apex Noire and will be "part cannabis dispensary and wholly an experience," including a dispensary space, an art/music gallery, and the cocktail bar itself, and based on the hearing notice, it appears that Apex Bar and Lounge plans to be on the 6th and 7th floor of the building, with the top floor being a roof deck.

Tito Jackson ran for mayor in 2017 and he has also been a city council member.

The address for the upcoming Apex Bar and Lounge is 150 State Street, Boston, MA, 02109. The website for Apex Noire will be at https://apexnoire.com/

Update: Hennessy's in Downtown Boston Reopens After Being Closed for the Winter and Part of the Spring

[Ed note: This article was updated to reflect the fact that the place is open once again.]

An old-school Irish pub in the heart of Boston has shut down for the time being.

According to a tweet from @towncrierboston, Hennessy's on Union Street (near Haymarket Square and Faneuil Hall) has closed its doors for the winter, with a Facebook post from the place saying the following:

We refuse to call this hibernation as we are not a seasonal restaurant. Our family and staff will not be taking a quiet slumber. Hibernation is a term that invokes a pleasantness, nothing about this decision is pleasant. Our wings have been clipped by new regulations put forth on our industry. Closing for the winter is our form of a tourniquet, slowing the bleed so that we can open again in the Spring. Until we open again we wish you all a great holiday a safe and healthy new year.

Hennessy's is one of many restaurants and bars in the local area to shut down for the winter due to the pandemic and the restrictions that have been placed on dining and drinking spots, along with a lack of foot traffic in Boston and elsewhere.

The address for Hennessy's is 25 Union Street, Boston, MA, 02108. Its website can be found at http://www.hennessysboston.com/

Mezcala Tex-Mex Grill (Formerly Zuma) in Boston's Faneuil Hall Has Apparently Closed

A longtime Tex-Mex restaurant in the heart of Boston that recently changed its name appears to have shut down permanently.

According to a source within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Mezcala Tex-Mex Grill in Faneuil Hall has closed for good, with a Facebook post from Steve Harnish (who had been a General Manager of the place) saying that "the run is over. It took a worldwide pandemic to kill it, but its officially over. Just was too hard to see a path forward." Mezcala, which has been closed since the outbreak of the coronavirus in March, had been called Zuma Tex-Mex Grill until changing its name early this year after settling a naming controversy between it and Zuma Boston, a high-end Japanese restaurant in the Back Bay that opened last year.

Zuma first opened in Faneuil Hall approximately 20 years ago.

The address for Mezcala Tex-Mex Grill (and the former Zuma) was 7 N Market Street, Boston, MA, 02109.

Cheers at Faneuil Hall Marketplace Is Closing for Good

A replica of a bar that was the focal point of a beloved sitcom is shutting down for good.

According to a source, Cheers at Faneuil Hall Marketplace is closing permanently after 20 years in business, with a press release indicating that the last day for the bar will be August 30. The release mentions that the COVID-19 pandemic played into the decision, while the lack of help from the landlord made the "current challenge insurmountable," according to owner Tom Kershaw.

The Faneuil Hall location of Cheers is a recreation of the bar shown on the set of Cheers, a TV show that ran from 1982 to 1993. (The original Cheers/Bull & Finch Pub, which is located on Beacon Street, will remain in operation.)

Confirmed: Dick's Last Resort at Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston Has Closed

It looks like the Boston location of a restaurant/bar chain that was known for its purposely rude staff and its party atmosphere has closed its doors.

According to a source within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Dick's Last Resort at Faneuil Hall Marketplace has shut down, with a tweet from Only In Boston saying that the dining and drinking spot "closed for good last Sunday after fifteen years in Quincy Market at Faneuil Hall Marketplace." Phone calls to the place go unanswered this afternoon, while a Google search has it labeled as "permanently closed," and a post within Boston's Wicked North Shore says that "Dick's Boston had reopened but today decision was made to shut down," though they mention that a rep from another location indicates \it could return at some point if "things changed." We have reached out to Faneuil Hall itself and are waiting to hear back from them to see if they have more information, so keep checking back for updates.

The Boston location of Dick's Last Resort had once been located on Huntington Avenue in the Back Bay.

Zuma Tex-Mex Grill at Faneuil Hall to Become Mezcala Tex-Mex Grill

Last summer, it was reported that a naming dispute had developed between two Boston restaurants, with the issue ultimately being settled and that one of the restaurants would be changing its name. Now we have learned what the new name will be.

According to a source (Geoff Wong), Zuma Tex-Mex Grill in Faneuil Hall is going to become Mezcala Tex-Mex Grill, with an events page indicating that a party called "Zuma: The Last Stand" will take place on January 31 and that Mezcala will debut the following day. The page mentions that no changes to its menu or ownership will be taking place, with the only change being its name, while saying "but oh what a party! It took 13 days to defeat the Texas rebels at the Alamo. They went down in a flame of glory and now we want to do the same, so come celebrate good-byes and NEW BEGINNINGS with us and be part of history." As reported earlier, the owners of Zuma Tex-Mex Grill filed a lawsuit against Zuma Boston, a high-end Japanese restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel One Dalton Street in the Back Bay, and a Superior Court judge subsequently ruled in favor of the former. Several weeks later, it was reported that the dispute was settled "amicably" and that Zuma Tex-Mex Grill would go through a name change.

The address for Zuma Tex-Mex Grill (and what will soon be Mezcala Tex-Mex Grill) is 7 N Market Street, Boston, MA, 02109. Its website can be found at https://zumatexmexgrill.com/

Battle Brewing Between Zuma Boston in the Back Bay and Zuma Tex-Mex Grill at Faneuil Hall

A naming dispute between two Boston restaurants appears to be heating up.

According to an article in The Boston Globe, the owners of Zuma Tex-Mex Grill at Faneuil Hall filed a lawsuit last month against Zuma Boston, a high-end Japanese restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel One Dalton Street in the Back Bay, and a Superior Court judge has subsequently ruled in favor of the Tex-Mex spot. The post reports that Judge Brian A. Davis says "B.B. Kitchen [which owns Zuma Tex-Mex Grill] is a small, single location business that already is suffering from significant marketplace confusion and likely will continue to suffer so long as [UK-based parent company] Azumi operates its Zuma Boston under the Zuma name....Azumi, on the other hand, is an international operation with approximately $200 million in annual revenues." Davis says that Azumi will have to cease and desist all use of the Zuma name, including in everything from social media posts to signs and marketing/ads, while workers cannot tell customers that the restaurant is called Zuma.

The Globe mentions that Zuma Tex-Mex Grill claims the right to use the name based on an license agreement that Azumi entered with B.B. Kitchen in 2008 where the former would not open any locations of Zuma in New England. The Back Bay location of Zuma debuted in late May.

[August 27 update: The Boston Globe mentions that the naming dispute between Zuma Tex-Mex Grill and Zuma Boston has been settled "amicably" and it appears Zuma Tex-Mex Grill may be changing its name, though specific details have not been given as of yet.]

For Five Coffee Roasters to Open Cafe in Downtown Boston

A New York-based coffee roaster that also includes a small group of cafes will be expanding to Boston, opening a shop in the heart of the city.

Eater Boston is reporting (via the Boston Business Journal) that For Five Coffee Roasters is planning to open on State Street next to Faneuil Hall, with the cafe offering coffee, salads, sandwiches, and pastries. The BBJ also says that this may be the first of multiple Boston locations, though for now, this is apparently the only one that is definitely in the works. If all goes as planned, the new location of For Five Coffee Roasters could be opening this fall.

For Five Coffee Roasters got its start in 2010 in Queens and initially was set up as just a wholesaler that sold its roasted beans to restaurants and other businesses before opening its first retail shop in Manhattan in 2016. A handful of locations can now be found in the New York City area and in Chicago and Los Angeles.

The address for the upcoming location of For Five Coffee Roasters in downtown Boston is 200 State Street, Boston, MA, 02109. The website for the business is at http://forfivecoffee.com/

Mercato Kitchen + Bar to Open in Downtown Boston

A new dining and drinking spot is on its way to the heart of downtown Boston, and the people behind it are also involved with a few other restaurants and bars in the city.

The Tables section of The Boston Globe is reporting that Mercato Kitchen + Bar is planning to open within the upcoming Hyatt Centric Faneuil Hall on Devonshire Street, with the post saying that it will "be inspired by the European food halls that owners Teodora Bakardzhieva and Jairo Dominguez love to visit," while the hotel's website indicates that the food will have both European and South American influences. The Globe mentions that such options as souvlaki, Spanish fried anchovies, mezze, and charcuterie will be available, with the hotel saying that global wines, beers, and craft cocktails will be served.

Bakardzhieva and Dominguez are also behind Publico Street Bistro and Backyard Betty's in South Boston along with Casa Cana in Allston-Brighton.

Durgin-Park in Boston's Faneuil Hall Is Closing

by Marc Hurwitz

It looks like a landmark Boston restaurant that has been in business for nearly 200 years may be shutting down, though details are just coming out now.

According to a Twitter post from Jonathan Choe of NBC10 Boston, workers at Durgin-Park in Faneuil Hall have been told that the restaurant is closing on January 12, though a more recent tweet from Choe says that Ark Restaurants (the company behind the place) has not yet responded to the news, while a spokesperson for Faneuil Hall states that it is still under a lease agreement and a formal closing notification has not been submitted. Another post from Choe states "workers now scrambling to find new jobs. They say management told them the business is no longer profitable, operating costs too high, and now dealing with intense competition from emergence of new restaurants in nearby Seaport District."

Durgin-Park, which first opened in 1827, is known in part for its classic American and regional New England fare.

This is a developing story, so stay tuned for updates.

[Update: WBZ reporter Kristina Rex tweets that Ark Restaurants CEO Michael Weinstein confirms Durgin-Park is closing January 12, saying that the shutting down of the restaurant is inevitable because it is no longer profitable.]

Mercado Taco Bar to Open in Bertucci's Space at Faneuil Hall in Boston

by Marc Hurwitz

A couple of months ago, we reported that a local chain of Italian dining spots was closing its location in downtown Boston. Now we have learned that a Mexican restaurant appears to be taking over the space.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Mercado Taco Bar is planning to open in Faneuil Hall, moving into the space wher Bertucci's had been. A Facebook page seems to confirm this, while a photo from the poster in the Facebook group indicates that it could be opening this summer. No other information appears to be available for Mercado at this point in time, so keep checking back for updates.

The Faneuil Hall location of Bertucci's shut down in mid-January after nearly 30 years in business, and with the subsequent closing of its Kenmore Square location earlier this month, there are now only two outlets left within the Boston city limits--in the Longwood medical area and in West Roxbury.

The address for the upcoming Mercado Taco Bar is 22 Merchants Row, Boston, MA, 02109.

[April 4 update: Eater Boston mentions that Mercado plans to be a sit-down restaurant that offers tacos inspired by beachside taco shacks found in Mexico as well as street food spots in both New York City and Los Angeles, and that it hopes to get a full liquor license so tequila and mezcal may be part of the plans as well. It looks like Mercado could be opening late this summer if all goes well.]
