It looks like a location of a local group of Mexican spots that has been expanding of late has shut down.

According to multiple sources, including a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Anna's Taqueria at Northeastern University in Boston is no longer in operation, with a check on the website for the business indicating that the location in the public food court inside the Marino Recreation Center has indeed been removed from the site. The dining spot first opened last year in the space where b.good had formerly been; other locations that debuted over the past couple of years in downtown Boston, South Boston, Dedham, Natick, and Woburn do remain open for business. (A number of other outlets of Anna's can be found in the Greater Boston area as well.)

Village Pancake House in Rowley Has Closed

A longtime breakfast and lunch spot on the North Shore has shut down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, the Village Pancake House in Rowley is no longer in business, with a Facebook post from the Main Street eatery saying the following:

Dear Friends, For more than 23 years, it has been our pleasure and privilege to provide a place where you could gather, enjoy a good meal, and make wonderful memories. Watching the restaurant grow and sharing so many special moments with you has been both exciting and incredibly fulfilling. We are deeply grateful for your friendship, loyalty, and support throughout the years. You have truly become a part of our family, and it has meant more to us than we can ever express. After much thought, we have decided that it is time for us to retire and close this chapter of our lives.

The Village Pancake House featured a variety of breakfast dishes along with seafood plates, sandwiches, and comfort food items such as ham steak, roast pork, meatloaf, steak tips, and chicken pot pie for lunch.

OTTO Pizza in South Weymouth Has Closed

The sole South Shore location of a group of pizzerias with roots up north has shut down.

According to its website, OTTO in South Weymouth is no longer in business, with its locations page showing that it has been removed from the site. The pizza spot first opened in the fall of 2023, moving into the ground floor of the Mio residential complex on Trotter Road (opposite the South Weymouth commuter rail station); currently, the closest location of OTTO to South Weymouth is in South Boston, with others being found in Andover, Arlington, Beverly, Boston's South End, the Boston/Brookline line (by BU), Brookline's Coolidge Corner, Cambridge's Harvard Square, Lynnfield, and Newburyport.

French Quarter in Downtown Boston Has Closed

A restaurant in the heart of Boston that featured traditional New Orleans dishes has shut down.

According to multiple sources, French Quarter on Washington Street is no longer in business, with an Instagram post from the dining spot saying the following:

To our guests, thank you for walking through our doors, celebrating with us, and making French Quarter part of your nights in Boston. You gave this restaurant its life and its meaning. To our staff, past and present, thank you for the care, hard work, humor, patience, and heart you gave to this place. French Quarter was never just the room or the menu. It was the people who made it feel alive....we are deeply grateful for every guest, every team member, and every memory made here. It has been an honor to serve you.

French Quarter first opened in downtown Boston six years ago, moving into the space where a location of Salvatore's had once been; its menu offered such options as red beans and rice, gumbo, jambalaya, shrimp and grits, crawfish etouffee, cornbread, and more.

Pizza Roma in Watertown Has Closed; Bougie Pizza Co. to Replace It

A suburban pizzeria known for its thin-crust and Sicilian pizza options has closed, and it looks like a new pizza spot is moving into its space.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Pizza Roma in Watertown is no longer in business, with a photo showing a sign out front at the Waverley Avenue spot indicating that Bougie Pizza Co. will be coming soon to the space. No information has been given as to why Pizza Roma shut down, nor is it known what kind of pizza (and other food) Bougie Pizza Co. might offer, so keep checking back for updates.

INspire Cafe in Wakefield Is Closing

A community cafe in the northern suburbs of Boston that is known for being an inclusive workplace is shutting down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, INspire Cafe is getting ready to close, with a Facebook post from the Main Street eatery saying the following:

With heavy hearts, we share that INspire cafe will be permanently closing its doors on Saturday, September 5 at 4pm....Unfortunately, the financial realities of operating the Cafe have become increasingly challenging. Rising food and operation costs, broader economic pressures, and and uncertainty surrounding federal funding have all contributed to growing financial pressures on the Cafe's mission-centered operations. The organization has worked tirelessly and explored multiple avenues to identify a sustainable path forward; however, it has reached a point where continued Cafe operations are no longer possible.

Since first opening early last year, INspire cafe has focused on helping bring about change by offering employment opportunities for people with diverse abilities.

A trio of cafes known for their healthy options is back down to two, as they have closed their sole Boston-area location.

According to multiple sources, NU Kitchen in Somerville is no longer in business, with a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page putting up a photo of a note out front saying "After nearly 10 wonderful years, we've made the difficult decision to close NU Kitchen Somerville." The note does mention that locations in Worcester and Newburyport remain in operation, saying "we hope to see many of you there."

NU Kitchen first opened on Washington Street on the outskirts of Union Square in 2016, offering such options as soups, salads, sandwiches, grain bowls, smoothies, and more including vegan and gluten-free options.

2nd Street Cafe in East Cambridge Is Closed; Exact Status Unknown

A longtime favorite for breakfast and lunch in Cambridge is locked up and dark, and it isn't known whether the place will reopen.

According to a source, the 2nd Street Cafe in East Cambridge is shuttered, with photos sent to us hinting that the space appears to be cleaned out, while a check on its website indicates that the site is no longer running. A Reddit thread mentions that according to a sign out front, the eatery had been closed for vacation until July 18 but it still hasn't reopened; as soon as we find out more about the exact status of the restaurant, we will post an update here.

Clover in Cambridge's Inman Square Has Closed

A location of a local restaurant chain featuring vegetarian fare has shut down only a couple of months after reopening.

According to a Bluesky post from @kenjimallon.bsky.social, Clover in Cambridge's Inman Square is no longer in operation, with a check on the company's website confirming this, as the Cambridge Street shop is no longer shown on the site, while a source sent us an email from Clover saying that "This closure is a planned part of our new era (smaller company, fewer locations, same amazing food)." Back in June, several locations of Clover reopened shortly after the company said that they would be ceasing operations, and the Inman Square location was one of the shops that opened back up. (Locations in Central Square, Kendall Square, Harvard Square, Boston's Financial District, and the Prudential Center remain open.)

Fresh Boston in South Boston Has Closed

The South Boston location of a trio of upscale delis and specialty food shops has shut down.

According to an article from Caught in Southie, Fresh Boston on Old Colony Avenue is no longer in operation, with an Instagram post from the place saying the following:

Hi Southie — After nearly four incredible years, we've made the difficult decision to temporarily close the doors of Fresh Boston. This isn't the ending we hoped for. Like so many small businesses, the challenges of the last few years proved greater than we could overcome. We poured everything we had into this restaurant, and while this chapter is coming to an end, we are incredibly proud of what we built together.

The South Boston location of the business first opened in late 2022, joining its original location on Nantucket; both the Nantucket location and the newer Cambridge location at CambridgeSide will remain in operation.

Session House Plans to Open in the Former Scobie's Cafe & Bar Space in Dorchester

A new Irish pub is coming to a space just off the Southeast Expressway, and it will be replacing another Irish pub.

According to an article from the Dorchester Reporter, Session House is planning to open in the Adams Village neighborhood of Dorchester, taking over the former Scobie's Cafe & Bar space by the corner of Adams Street and Gallivan Boulevard. The article mentions that the upcoming spot will focus in part on live music (including traditional Irish music) and that it will offer elevated pub fare along with craft beer, wine, whiskey, and cocktails. If all goes as planned, Session House could be opening this fall.

Scobie's, which first opened in the summer of 2024, temporarily closed in February of this year for renovations, but apparently never reopened.

Paul Revere Restaurant in West Medford Is Closing

A longtime breakfast and lunch spot a few miles north of Boston is going to be shutting down.

According to an Instagram post from the business, Paul Revere Restaurant in West Medford is planning to close its doors, with the post from the High Street eatery saying the following:

It is with a heavy heart that we share that Paul Revere Restaurant will be closing permanently on Sunday, August 30, 2006. Due to an unexpected, serious medical hardship and retirement, we are no longer able to continue operating the restaurant. After careful consideration with our family and medical team, we must prioritize our health and prioritize what is best for our family, and unfortunately right now that means stepping away from daily operation.

Paul Revere Restaurant has been in business since 2000, offering such options as breakfast plates, waffles, pancakes, club sandwiches, burgers, wings, fish and chips, and more.

Sweet Cheeks Q and Fool's Errand in Boston's Fenway Neighborhood Are Both Closing

A couple of dining and drinking spots from one of Boston's best-known chefs/restaurateurs will be shutting down.

According to an article from boston.com, Tiffani Faison is going to be closing Sweet Cheeks Q and Fool's Errand in the city's Fenway neighborhood as she has decided not to renew the lease for the two places, with Faison saying the following in the article:

It's been 15 years, and this is a heartbreaking victory lap for us, and for the city, and for our team....A restaurant staying open for 15 years, full stop, is nearly impossible. So to be able to make it this far, it's been the honor of my life. [Sweet Cheeks] is my first baby, and this is one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make....It is cost-prohibitive to have restaurants now....Right now, we're paying for fuel charges that are in addition to what we already pay because the Strait of Hormuz is closed and gas is heinously expensive. And we are paying tariffs on things that come from other countries. And then there are things that are just expensive anyway. The price of food has gone up. We pay a fair wage and that is really hard to do."

Faison says that both Sweet Cheeks (which focuses on barbecue) and Fool's Errand (which offers bar snacks, wine, and cocktails, and which shares the same liquor license as Sweet Cheeks) will be closing after business hours on November 24.

Dumpling Center Has Opened in the Former Dumpling Palace Space in Boston's Back Bay

A new spot for dumplings and more has come to Boston, and it replaces another dumpling spot.

According to a poster (Drew Starr) within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Dumpling Center is now open in the Back Bay, moving into the space on Massachusetts Avenue that had previously been home to Dumpling Palace. The post indicates that the menu at the new eatery is similar to that of its predecessor (though the place has different ownership), with offerings on its website including handmade dumplings, buns, noodles, sizzling dry wok specialties, and mala hot pot.

Dumpling Palace first opened in 2014, replacing Nan Ling.

According to multiple sources, One Bite in Inman Square is no longer in operation, with a sign out front indicating that it closed its doors on July 30. The dining spot first opened in the latter part of 2024, taking over the space where JP Restaurant had been, and before that, Midwest Grill Fusion, a short-lived Korean BBQ spot, and the Midwest Grill Brazilian BBQ; the restaurant offered a variety of sushi dishes including such options as taco sushi and mini bowls.

In December of 1994, we opened our doors as Gennaro's Eatery. Many years later, we changed our name to Gennaro & Son — because our son Anthony was already putting in more hours than the two of us combined, and we wanted his name on the door, right alongside ours. Lo Kai Restaurant & Lounge in Dracut Is Closing

An old-school Chinese restaurant north of Boston known in part for its Polynesian drinks is shutting down.

According to an article from boston.com, Lo Kai Restaurant & Lounge in Dracut is getting ready to close its doors, with a note on its website saying the following:

After over 50 years in business, we are now announcing that the Lo Kai Restaurant will permanently close its doors this summer. We recognize that this news may come as a shock, but we invite you to come in and enjoy a pupu platter, a Mai Tai, or anything you would like before we conclude our time here on Lakeview Avenue....We want to assure you that this decision did not come lightly. Due to a number of factors, we have determined this to be the best course of action.

The note goes on to say that Lo Kai will close after business hours on August 8.

Lo Kai Restaurant & Lounge first opened in 1972, being a place to go for Chinese-American fare and drinks such as Scorpion Bowls and Mai Tais while also featuring live music.

Thai Hut in Somerville Is Going to Be Closing; Owners May Open a New Restaurant northwest of Boston

It looks like a neighborhood spot for Thai food in Somerville is shutting down, though the people behind it may be opening a new place well outside of the area.

According to a number of sources, including a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Thai Hut on Beacon Street is going to be closing, with a Facebook comment within the Somerville, MA Community Facebook page from real estate agent Apple Tomamichel (who represents both the buyer and seller of the place) saying that "Thai Hut is taking a well-deserved break" while wishing the owners "nothing but success in their next adventure" and mentioning that "The new tenant will also be bringing Asian cuisine to the neighborhood—either a Thai restaurant or a Thai-Vietnamese concept."

There is some chatter that the Thai Hut owners could be opening a new restaurant somewhere northwest of Boston (with Westford being mentioned), though nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Boloco to Close Its Sole Remaining Location; Downtown Boston Outlet Shuts Down September 25

What was once a local chain of restaurants will soon be officially gone, as its final location is going to be shutting down.

According to a Facebook post from the business, Boloco is closing its downtown Boston location, with the note saying the following:

It's been a hell of a ride. After 29 years, Boloco's last location--50 Congress St, Boston--closes for good on September 25. (Building has been sold, converting to residential.) 10,746 days down, 60 days to go.

Boloco's roots date back more than 25 years, with the Boloco brand replacing "The Wrap" in 2005; there had once been a number of locations throughout the Greater Boston area and elsewhere in New England including two others that have shuttered of late--at Boston Children's Hospital on Longwood Avenue and in Hanover, NH, the latter of which rebranded to BocaSoca under new ownership. All locations were known in part for their burritos and bowls.

The Pearl at Boston Landing in Brighton Is Closed; Exact Status Unknown

Earlier this year, it was reported that one of a pair of seafood restaurants in Boston had closed permanently, and now we have learned that the other location is shuttered, though it isn't yet known whether this is a permanent closure as well.

According to several sources, The Pearl at Boston Landing in Brighton is closed, with an Instagram post from the business saying the following:

As we navigate an important transition, The Pearl will be temporarily closing. While this isn't the news we hoped to share, we're actively working through several possibilities and remain hopeful about what's ahead. Thank you to everyone who has dined with us, celebrated with us, and supported our team. Your love and loyalty have meant more than words can express. We'll keep you updated as we have more to share.

The Boston Landing location of The Pearl first opened in early 2025, while the original at South Bay in Dorchester (which debuted in 2021) closed earlier this year; both locations were known for their variety of seafood options (including a raw bar) along with beer, wine, and cocktails.
