Clover Closes Harvard Square, Newtonville Locations; Zimmer Hall/Harvard Science Center Location Remains Open

Several weeks ago, it was reported that a local restaurant chain featuring vegetarian fare was ceasing operations only to have the business being saved at the last minute. Now we have learned that at least two outlets of the chain will not be returning to their spaces.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, brick-and-mortar locations of Clover in Cambridge's Harvard Square and Newtonville are shuttered with a "for lease" sign in the latter while a Harvard Crimson article states that the former is indeed closed while also saying that the nearby outlet in Zimmer Hall/Harvard Science Center remains open for business. As mentioned in an earlier article here, locations in Cambridge's Inman Square, Central Square, Kendall Square, Boston's Financial District, and the Prudential Center are back open along with the aforementioned Zimmer Hall/Harvard Science Center space, though it isn't yet known at this point  if any other locations that have not reopened will actually be reopening.

The website for Clover can be found at https://www.cloverfoodlab.com/

Clover Is Returning; Boston and Cambridge Locations to Reopen June 9

Last week, it was announced that a local restaurant chain featuring vegetarian fare was ceasing operations. Now we have learned that this will not be the case after all.

According to an email from the business, Clover is going to be reopening only a few days after shutting down late last week. The email says the following:

...we're now able to announce some shocking news... CLOVER WILL CONTINUE. We didn't plan this. We couldn't have. And we're still figuring it out—but it's true! We will not continue as a shell of ourselves, or someone else's concept grafted onto our leases. We will continue as the experience that we have all built together—the concept that moved so many to raise their voices last week. We will continue to change with the seasons, support local farmers, create local jobs, and foster community.

The email does mention that "This won't be without some big changes," saying that they will be closed for the rest of the week as they need to regroup. Starting on Tuesday, June 9, they will reopen their Boston and Cambridge locations for lunch and "onward" and breakfast service will return the following day.

More updates on the return of Clover will be coming, so stay tuned for updates.

[June 10 update: Several locations of Clover are now open, with lunch service beginning yesterday and breakfast service (and normal hours) commencing today at the following locations: Inman Square, Central Square, Kendall Square, the Financial District, and the Prudential Center, with the Harvard Science Center location being slated to open back up on Monday June 22. (More updates will be coming on their other locations.)]

Clover to Cease Operations

A local restaurant chain that features vegetarian fare is saying farewell.

According to an email, Clover is shutting down, with Thursday, May 28 being its final day of restaurant service and meal box delivery. The note in the email says the following:

So what's happened? We've always prized transparency along Clover's journey. Our current situation isn't a unique story. In the best of times, restaurants are a tough business: margins are thin, building new restaurants is expensive, and our industry is the most exposed to macroeconomic forces. For years we've been navigating the hangover effects of COVID and inflation at every part of our supply chain, but we are proud to have remained committed to sourcing high-quality ingredients from local farms. Today, everyone is getting hit with rising costs—food prices are up, delivery prices are up, and a hundred other costs are moving in the same direction....We're deeply saddened to share this news—for our employees, New England farmers, and you, our guests and supporters.

Clover first started out in 2008 with a food truck at MIT and has since grown to include a number of brick-and-mortar locations; a couple of months ago, it was learned that the business was in danger of going under if a buyer could not be found by May 29.

Clover at Somerville's Assembly Row Has Closed

A local group of vegetarian restaurants that declared bankruptcy last month has shut down one of its locations.

According to a couple of sources, Clover at Assembly Row in Somerville is no longer in business, with a post within the Clover site saying the following:

The closure of this restaurant is part of the whole company's focus on reaching financial sustainability and positioning us for future growth....On the business side, it was relatively untested ground for Clover: a large restaurant in a mostly commercial area with a few big employers and luxury high-rises. ROW was a bet. And a year in, the traffic just isn't there yet. Even further in the weeds: this location is a uniquely complex one for Clover to run because it includes a full-on specialty grocery store in addition to the restaurant....As a company, it's a time for us to simplify. We are laser-focused on the core businesses that make us great: Restaurants, Catering, and Meal Boxes. And handing back the keys to ROW will help us direct resources back into those core areas and strengthen Clover overall.

In early November, Clover Food Lab filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, saying that they couldn't pay the lease on a new commissary because it was unable to raise enough funds from investors.

Clover Food Lab Has Filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

A local restaurant chain that features vegetarian fare has declared bankruptcy.

According to an article in The Boston Globe, Clover Food Lab has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, saying that they can't pay the lease on a new commissary due to the fact that it could not raise enough funds from investors. A WBUR article mentions that the company plans to restructure its operations and finances while also ending the leases on underperforming locations that have above-market rent, and it will also sell off some of its delivery vehicles.

As mentioned in an earlier article here, the Boylston Street outlet of Clover in Boston's Back Bay closed this summer, and while the Globe originally said that the School Street outlet downtown will soon shut down as well, we have been told by Clover that this is not actually the case at this point in time, and it remains in operation.

Update: Ritu Ki Rasoi in Burlington Is Under New Management; Changes on the Way

A vegetarian restaurant in the northern suburbs of Boston which features Indian food with other international influences appears to be going through changes..
