Southern Kin Cookhouse at Assembly Row in Somerville Is Closing; New Location Apparently on the Way

A Southern-style restaurant in Somerville will soon be saying farewell to its home, though it looks like it will be reborn in a new location at some point.

According to a source, Southern Kin Cookhouse at Assembly Row is getting ready to close its doors, with its social media pages mentioning a "friendly/bittersweet reminder that our Assembly Row location will close 7/27. Make the most of it & visit us there until we relocate" while another post says "Come visit us at our Assembly Row location one last time! New spot coming soon!" It is not yet known where the new location will be, so keep checking back for updates as they come in.

Southern Kin Cookhouse first opened in 2016, offering such options as buttermilk biscuits, grilled cornbread, chicken and waffles, gumbo, fried catfish, shrimp and grits, country fried steak, ribs, macaroni and cheese, dirty rice, and pecan pie along with beer, wine, and cocktails.

The address for Southern Kin Cookhouse is 500 Assembly Row, Somerville, MA, 02145. Its website can be found at https://southernkincookhouse.com/

[August 1 update: Its social media has confirmed that Southern Kin Cookhouse is now closed, though it also mentions its "grand relocation" which further indicates that it does plan to return, presumably in a new space.]

Cocolee Is Replacing River Bar at Assembly Row in Somerville

A new Pan-Asian dining spot is on its way to Somerville, and it is going to be a reconcept of a recently closed restaurant.

According to its website, Cocolee is opening this spring at Assembly Row, with its sample menu showing such options as adobo pork skewers, wok-fried green beans, BBQ mushroom bao, snow mountain shrimp, confit duck wings, crab basil fried rice, Maui-style noodles, sea bass, and smoked ribeye, while cocktails will be offered as well. An earlier Boston Business Journal article mentions that it will open in the River Bar space and is a concept change, so it appears to be under the same ownership as that place.

[May 30 update: According to an Instagram post from the business, Cocolee is now open at Assembly Row, and it includes an outdoor area along with two bars.]

Frank at Assembly Row in Somerville Has Closed

A bit more than a half year after its original location in Beverly shut down, a Somerville restaurant is now closed as well.

According to a message sent to us from the place, Frank at Assembly Row is no longer in business, with the message coming after a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page mentioned its closing--and a check on the Assembly Row website showed that it had been removed from the site. The Somerville outlet of Frank first opened last November, a few months after the Beverly location shuttered; both restaurants had been opened by Frank McClelland, who ran L'Espalier in Boston's Back Bay until it closed in 2018.

The address for the now-closed location of Frank in Somerville was 400 Assembly Row, Somerville, MA 02145.

Papagayo at Assembly Row in Somerville Is Becoming Toca Chida

The sole remaining location of what had once been a group of upscale Mexican restaurants is shuttered, and it looks like the restaurant group behind it will be replacing it with a new spot.

According to its website, Papagayo at Assembly Row in Somerville is no longer in operation, with the note saying that "We're excited to announce the launch of our newest concept from Legendary Restaurant Group coming Spring 2024." The Facebook page for Papagayo now goes to a new page for a restaurant called Toca Chida, though no details have been given as of yet (stay tuned for updates as they come in).

Papagayo first opened at Assembly Row in 2014, joining another location at the time in Boston's Fort Point neighborhood; other outlets had also been in Downtown Crossing and Saugus as well but all are now closed. Its website (which shows the note for the new concept) can be found at https://www.papagayorestaurants.com/ while the website for Toca Chida is at https://www.tocachida.com/

Clover at Somerville's Assembly Row Has Closed

A local group of vegetarian restaurants that declared bankruptcy last month has shut down one of its locations.

According to a couple of sources, Clover at Assembly Row in Somerville is no longer in business, with a post within the Clover site saying the following:

The closure of this restaurant is part of the whole company's focus on reaching financial sustainability and positioning us for future growth....On the business side, it was relatively untested ground for Clover: a large restaurant in a mostly commercial area with a few big employers and luxury high-rises. ROW was a bet. And a year in, the traffic just isn't there yet. Even further in the weeds: this location is a uniquely complex one for Clover to run because it includes a full-on specialty grocery store in addition to the restaurant....As a company, it's a time for us to simplify. We are laser-focused on the core businesses that make us great: Restaurants, Catering, and Meal Boxes. And handing back the keys to ROW will help us direct resources back into those core areas and strengthen Clover overall.

In early November, Clover Food Lab filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, saying that they couldn't pay the lease on a new commissary because it was unable to raise enough funds from investors.

The website for Clover can be found at https://www.cloverfoodlab.com/

Frank Has Soft-Opened at Assembly Row in Somerville

It looks like a location of a now-closed North Shore restaurant has very quietly debuted just north of Boston.

According to two sources, including a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page and @jwarrick01890 who posted within the Threads social media platform, Frank is now open at Somerville's Assembly Row, with @jwarrick01890 posting a picture of a meal from there and saying the place appears to be in the middle of a soft opening. Plans for the Assembly Row outlet of the restaurant were first announced in June of 2022, though a few months ago it was reported here that the original location of Frank in Beverly shut down with little notice, and it isn't know if/when it might reopen.

Frank McClelland, who ran L'Espalier in Boston's Back Bay until it closed in 2018, is also behind this restaurant, which doesn't yet appear to have a website or any social media presence.

MidiCi in Somerville's Assembly Row Is Reopening

A Somerville pizza spot that closed just as the COVID-19 pandemic was taking hold is opening back up.

According to a source, MidiCi at Assembly Row is reopening as early as today, with a page within the Assembly Row site indicating that the dining spot is indeed returning, while the website for the California-based chain also shows that it is coming back to its former space. Back in March, MidiCi closed down a few days after Governor Baker began the restaurant shutdown that only allowed for takeout/delivery, though it appeared at the time that its closure had been in the works before the coronavirus outbreak, and that some sort of remodeling and/or rebranding might be taking place. A Facebook post from MacLeod & Sons Painting Co. does seem to show that the space was indeed being worked on of late, though it is not known to what extent, nor is it known if any menu changes might be coming.

MidiCi first opened at Assembly Row in early 2018, offering Neapolitan-style pizza as well as salads, small plates, beer, wine, and cocktails.

The address for MidiCi is 463 Assembly Row, Somerville, MA,02145. The website for the chain is at https://mymidici.com/

[July 16 update: A press release indicates that MidiCi is officially reopens at Assembly Row today with a brand new outdoor patio in place, and that for today only, it is "Pay Whatever You Can" in which 100% of proceeds from dine-in or takeout goes to The Somerville Cares Fund to help those affected by COVID-19.]
