Real Italian Gusto in Medford Has Closed Permanently; Team Behind Ebisuya Japanese Market Taking Over the Space

Earlier this week, it was reported that an Italian restaurant north of Boston appeared to have closed. We have now confirmed this, while also discovering who will be taking over the space.

A Facebook post from the restaurant confirms that Real Italian Gusto in Medford has indeed closed, with the note saying the following:

Dear friends, after 11 years of cooking, welcoming, laughing, and sharing moments together, we have made the very difficult decision to close our restaurant. This choice was not easy. Your support over the years has meant more to us than words can express....Today, we close this chapter to pursue new projects and new paths.

The post from the High Street dining spot goes on to say that the people behind the shuttered Ebisuya Japanese Market--which was also in Medford--will be taking over the space, saying that "they will share more details soon." (Ebisuya Japanese Market closed last year, though their other spot--Ebisuya Japanese Noodle House--remains open in Malden.)

The address for the now-closed Real Italian Gusto (and the new spot from the Ebisuya Japanese Market team) is 24 High Street, Medford, MA, 02155.

Daily Table Is Closing All of Its Stores

A local group of nonprofit community grocers that help provide food to those in need is ceasing operations.

According to a Facebook post from the business, Daily Table is shutting down all of its markets, with the post saying the following:

With heavy hearts, we share that Daily Table will be closing our doors within the next few days. This was not an easy decision. For the past 10 years, we have had the honor of serving neighborhoods across Greater Boston, working alongside our community to make affordable, nutritious food accessible to all. We are proud to have served over 3 million customers, returning over $16 million in savings to the community while removing the barriers to healthy food. The past several years have been particularly hard; navigating the challenges of COVID-19, plus the pressures of facing historically high levels of food price increases, to the current uncertain and difficult funding environment, sustaining Daily Table has become increasingly difficult. Without immediate funding to bridge us through 2025, we cannot continue. After careful consideration, we have come to the heartbreaking conclusion that we can no longer continue operations.

Please know that due to the urgency of the situation, we were unable to individually reach out to all of our longstanding partners, and we apologize if this news comes as a shock. We understand that this comes at a time when other food access resources and organizations are at risk, which makes this news even more difficult to share. We hope that those who have been generous to Daily Table will continue investing in other organizations to meet the ongoing need.

The note refers customers who may be in need of support to this link within the City of Boston website: https://www.boston.gov/departments/food-justice/food-resources

A note on its website says that Daily Table's markets in Dorchester, Roxbury, and Salem will close after business hours on Sunday, May 11, while the market in Cambridge's Central Square, will remain open through Monday, May 12. (Another store had been in Mattapan but it closed at the beginning of the year.) The website for Daily Table can be found at https://www.dailytable.org/

The Block Is Opening in Boston's Seaport District

A new restaurant and market will soon be coming to the Boston waterfront, and the owner of a dining spot in the same building is behind it.

Eater Boston is reporting that Kristin Canty of Woods Hill Pier 4 is planning to open the Block at Woods Hill on Pier 4 Boulevard in the Seaport District in late May, and it will be a more casual concept than Woods Hill Pier 4 but will have the same focus on local ingredients as her other restaurants (which include Woods Hill Table and Adelita, both of which are in West Concord). The article mentions that the new restaurant will feature dry-aged beef that is grass-fed and grass-finished, while cheese and charcuterie boards will be coming as well along with dry-aged pork, tapas-style shareable plates, and more.

In addition to the restaurant--which will also include a bar with seating for approximately 24--the Block will have a market that will focus on local products.
