Karl's Sausage Kitchen & European Market in Peabody Is Closing

An iconic North Shore market and deli that is known for its German food is saying farewell.

According to a Facebook post from the place, Karl's Sausage Kitchen & European Market in Peabody is closing its doors, with the post saying the following:

It is with a mixture of deep gratitude and heavy hearts that we announce the closure of Karl's Sausage Kitchen after 67 unforgettable years. Since 1958, Karl's Sausage Kitchen has been much more than just a sausage kitchen—it has been a space where friendships blossomed, memories were created, and generations of families gathered around shared meals. We have been honored to be part of your lives and celebrations, and your support has been the cornerstone of our success.

Karl's had once been located further down Route 1 in Saugus (where it had been since 1958), with the place moving to its current location in Peabody in 2012; its last day in operation will be Saturday, January 18.

Ziggy & Son's Donuts to Reopen in New Location in Peabody

A location of a pair of North Shore donut shops is being reborn in a new space more than a year after one of its owners became very sick from Covid.

According to a source, Ziggy & Son's Donuts is in the process of reopening in Peabody, moving from 474 Lowell Street to 6 Bourbon Street, with a Facebook post from co-owners John and Pattie Akatyszewski showing a sign up at its new storefront. A series of earlier Facebook posts mentioned that John ended up in the hospital with Covid in the latter part of 2021 and was in the ICU at Salem Hospital for six weeks before entering rehab and the start of a long recovery process.

In addition to the shop that they are bringing back to Peabody, John and Pattie Akatyszewski are also behind a location of Ziggy & Son's on Essex Street in Salem. (The business was first established in Salem in 1964.)

Centennial Grille in Peabody Is Closing

A North Shore restaurant known in part for its breakfast dishes and sandwiches is shutting down.

According to a tweet from @JeremyKrantz, Centennial Grille in Peabody is closing permanently, with a Facebook post from the 1st Avenue eatery confirming this, saying that "Its with a heavy heart that we have made the difficult decision to close our location....To all our customers and wonderful lifetime friends we have made over these past years thank you for your continuous support." The note says that its last day in business will be tomorrow (Friday, August 27).

Centennial Grille has been a popular spot among locals and nearby office workers, with its menu including breakfast sandwiches, omelets, pancakes, pizza, calzones, subs, wings, pasta, and more.

Holy Cow Ice Cream Cafe Opens in Peabody

A Gloucester ice cream shop has expanded to a second location, with this one being closer to Boston.

According to a source, Holy Cow Ice Cream Cafe opens today in Peabody, moving into a space on Route 114 just south of the Route 128 intersection. A Facebook post from the business confirms its opening while also saying the following:

...we thought a nice way to introduce ourselves to the community was to make the most controversial ice cream of 2021 with the Northshore Beefs finest, Jamie's Roast Beef! We give you "NSB 3-Way", made with Au Jus ice cream with fried sesame buns, James River Caramel, American Cheesecake chunks and Mayonnaise frosting.

The original location of Holy Cow Ice Cream Cafe, which is located on Pleasant Street in Gloucester, is known for its unusual ingredients such as Lucky Charms, brown butter, whiskey, Fruity Pebbles, cheery merlot sauce, and shortbread.

Granite Coast Brewing Company Opens in Peabody

Last spring, it was reported that a new brewery was making plans to open on the North Shore. Now we have learned that the place has officially debuted.

According to a message from @CappyinBoston, Granite Coast Brewing Company opens today in Peabody, with an events page indicating that a grand opening is taking place tonight, all day Saturday, and Sunday afternoon at the Main Street facility, which includes a brewery, taproom, and outdoor patio along with an area for pop-up restaurants. For now, the taproom is generally BYOF (bring your own food), though Popo's Hot Dogs will be onsite Saturday.

Essex County Brewing Company Opens in Peabody

A brand new nanobrewery has come to the Greater Boston area, and its space includes a taproom.

According to a post from Eater Boston, Essex County Brewing Company is now open in Peabody, with the Pulaski Street spot offering such beers as a double IPA with citra, a kolsch, a stout, and more. The brewery includes a taproom with a capacity of 60, and that its hours are currently 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.

Granite Coast Brewing Company Is Making Plans to Come to Peabody

It looks like another brewery is on its way to the Greater Boston area, and this one will call the North Shore its home.

According to a message from @CappyinBoston, Granite Coast Brewing Company has gotten their permits approved to open on Main Street in the downtown section of Peabody. A video posted by The Salem News indicates that the upcoming facility will include a brewing area, a beer hall-style taproom and bar, an outdoor patio, a walk-in cooler, and an area for pop-up restaurants (the brewery will also allow patrons to bring in takeout food from local dining spots as well).

If all goes as planned, Granite Coast Brewing Company could be up and running by this summer.
