The C Note in Hull Is Closing

A South Shore music venue that shut down during the early part of the pandemic only to be reborn thanks to fundraisers, benefit concerts, and the sale of merchandise is closing permanently.

According to a Facebook post from the business, The C Note in Hull is going to be shutting down for good, with the note saying the following:

It is with heavy hearts and a deep sense of gratitude that we announce The C Note will soon be closing its doors on Saturday, September 26. After decades of serving as your local music club, the time has come for us to move on. Stepping away from a place that has been our home for so long is incredibly difficult, but we are immensely proud of the incredible run we have shared with all of you. 

Back in the summer of 2020, it was announced that the music club would be shuttering, but a grassroots campaign helped them return the following year. (The C Note had formerly been called the Sea Note, with an ownership change taking place a bit more than 15 years ago.)

Aurora Market & Bakery in Boston's South End Has Closed

A South End food shop known for its Greek options has shut down.

According to publicist Christopher B. Haynes who posted about it within the South End Community Board Facebook group page, Aurora Market & Bakery on Tremont Street is no longer in operation, with a note out front thanking customers for their patronage while mentioning that Sunday was its last day in business. The market first opened in the early part of 2025, offering such items as avgolemono, falafel sandwiches, lamb souvlaki, Mediterranean wraps, baklava, and more.

The address for the now-closed Aurora Market & Bakery in the South End was 570 Tremont Street, Boston, MA, 02118.

Party Favors in Brookline Has Closed

A decades-old bakery in Brookline that was known for its cakes has shut down.

According to its Instagram page, Party Favors in Coolidge Corner is now closed, with the last day in operation for the Beacon Street shop being yesterday. There had an earlier note on its website saying "The news is true, after 35 years we are closing our doors. It has been a pleasure to serve you, and to be a part of your celebrations." while a Brookline News article quoted co-owner John Pergantis as saying that "There's no walking traffic anymore. People are still ordering stuff online. The cake business is great, but we can' t keep it going on just cakes without some other revenue coming in." Co-owner Mary Lynn Pergantis also states that "I don’t think people quite understand the volume of business it takes to pay the bills as a retailer....We really don't need this kind of space anymore, and we really can't justify paying the rent to be in this kind of space anymore."

The article does mention that the business could be reborn in a smaller space, with Mary Lynn saying that "Hopefully we can find something smaller and kind of work it a little differently and build it up and then be able to retire."

Weesh Bake Shop in Roslindale Closes Its Retail Shop; Business Will Continue Via Pickups and Popups

A retail bakery in a Boston neighborhood has shuttered after approximately five years in operation, though the business will continue on.

According to an article from Universal Hub, Weesh Bake Shop in Roslindale closed its retail shop at the end of last month, with owner Elyse Purbaugh saying the following in a Facebook post:

Retail has not been profitable for us and when two freezers and a dishwasher break and cost thousands, we need to keep the lights on. We absolutely love our repeat customers who come in for their weekly brownie or weekly M&M cookie and it breaks my heart to give them this news....Retail is not for the faint of heart and nor is being a business owner. Bringing joy to your special day is why Weesh started, and we fully intend to keep that promise.

Purbaugh mentions in a comment within the post that "We are not leaving Birch Street right now as we will continue pre-order pickups there (3x per week) and will host pop-ups! The only thing that will stop is our Saturday retail walk-in."

A beloved neighborhood grocery store is saying farewell today.

According to a poster within the South End Community Board Facebook group page, Foodie's Market in the South End of Boston is shutting down permanently at 4:00 PM, with a sign out front at the Washington Street store saying "Thank you for 28 wonderful years. It has been our sincere honor, pleasure and joy to serve the South End Community. We value your loyalty and friendship very much and wish you well in the future." The South Boston location of Foodie's on W Broadway will remain in operation.

Dairy Witch in Salem Has Closed

 A North Shore ice cream spot that has been around for a long time has shut down.

According to multiple sources, Dairy Witch in Salem will not be reopening for the season, with a Facebook post from the Boston Street spot saying the following:

After 74 years, Dairy Witch is closing. That is not an easy sentence to type. There is a weight to it. Bea and Pete Polemenako opened the window at 117 Boston Street in 1952, the same year their daughter Marietta was born. Marietta has stood by that window her entire life, but will be retiring this year. We will not be opening this spring. There will not be another season....We'll be sharing more in the coming days. Old photos, stories, and a few things we've been working on, so a piece of Dairy Witch can stick around even after the window stays closed. For now we just wanted Salem to hear it from us before anyone else. Thank you.

Dairy Witch has been known over the years for its variety of ice cream flavors along with its sundaes, banana splits, frappes, freezes, malts, and more.

J & B Butcher in Stoneham Has Closed

One of a trio of butcher shops--and its closest one to Boston--has shut down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, J & B Butcher in Stoneham is no longer in operation, with an Instagram post from the business saying the following:

With grateful hearts, we're announcing that our Stoneham location has permanently closed. We are so thankful for every customer who supported us over the years--you meant the world to us.

The note does say that locations in Tewksbury and East Hampstead, NH remain open for business, and all gift certificates will be honored at both locations.

The Old Planters Brewing Co. Space in Beverly Is Up for Sale

Another local brewery has shut down, and its space is on the market.

Based on a Bluesky post from @jeremyk.bsky.social, Old Planters Brewing Co. in Beverly is closed, with a listing within samgifford.churchillprop.com indicating that the Rantoul Street space is for sale along with the business itself, though the seller will consider selling the real estate only without the business as well. An earlier post from the brewery mentioned the following:

We've decided that [2025] will be our last year running Old Planters. It's become clear to us over the past year that our business deserves more time than we can currently give it in order for it to continue to grow. That being said, it's our sincere hope that someone will want to carry the torch for Old Planters into the future starting in 2026, but we understand that might not be a reality. If that's the case, we will be doing our best to try and foster a new concept for our building that will be a great addition to Rantoul Street.

Old Planters first started out as a basement home brewer about 10 years ago, opening their Beverly taproom in 2019.

According to a source, Scafidi Bros. Market & Deli in Newton is closing, with an Instagram post from the Beacon Street spot saying the following:

It is with truly heavy hearts that we share the news that Scafidi Bros will be permanently closing this month due to financial challenges outside of our control. This has been an incredibly painful decision, and one we did not make lightly.

Barrel House Z in Weymouth Has Closed

A local brewery that resided on the South Shore for approximately ten years has very quietly shut down.

According to a Facebook post from the business, Barrel House Z in Weymouth is no longer in business, having closed its doors permanently on February 7. The post says the following about the closure:

And…that's a wrap.  For multiple reasons, Barrel House Z has closed its doors....The market has changed dramatically over the last 2-3 years. Demand for alcoholic beverages have declined generally, and demand for craft beer has declined specifically.  People are not going out as much for food and beverage. We attempted to pivot in the direction of the "experience" business, offering food and events/entertainment but found ourselves now not only competing with other breweries and tap rooms, but hospitality providers generally. In summary, we struggled mightily in the face of a shrinking market, rising costs to operate, and a substantial debt service that was taken on in the aftermath of Covid.  Less cash income + rising expenses do not make for a solid business, and we found ourselves in an untenable cash flow situation. 

Barrel House Z first opened on Woodrock Road in September of 2016, though its founder--Russ Heissner--has been in the business for a long time, being Harpoon's first brewer back in 1986.

Trillium Beer Garden Will Not Be Returning to The Greenway in Downtown Boston

Say farewell to a popular outdoor beer garden in the heart of Boston.

According to multiple sources along with an article in The Boston Globe, Trillium Garden on The Greenway is not going to be returning after nearly a decade in operation, as Trillium Brewing Company submitted a bid but was not chosen, with the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy going with a new as-of-yet unnamed tenant instead (the name of the new tenant will be named in the spring). Trillium first opened its beer garden on the Greenway back in 2017, being a place where patrons could enjoy beers while sitting at picnic tables under the shade of the trees.

Trillium continues to operate locations in Fort Point, the Fenway, and Canton, and it now has an indoor winter beer garden at The Connector at Winthrop Center on Federal Street.

A local group of vegan ice cream shops has closed another one one of its locations.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, FoMu in the South End of Boston is no longer in operation, with a Facebook post from the business on December 29 saying the following:

A HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL OF THE NEIGHBORS, FAMILY & FANS THAT CAME BY OUR SOUTH END LOCATION ON THE COLDEST OF DAYS TO SAY #SOLONG  Our South End store is now closed, and while we are sad to say goodbye, we hope you find FoMu near you and join us on our journey. White Mountain Creamery in Chestnut Hill Is Closing; New City Microcreamery to Replace It

A longtime ice cream shop that is popular with college students is going to be shutting down, and a growing local group of ice cream spots will be replacing it.

According to an article in The Heights, White Mountain Creamery by Boston College in Chestnut Hill is closing its doors, and New City Microcreamery will be taking over the Commonwealth Avenue space. The article mentions that the shop is slated to shutter on November 24, and New City will apparently open in the beginning of December.

White Mountain Creamery first started out in 1983, coming under the current ownership 10 years later; New City Microcreamery began in Hudson in 2015 and now has locations in Hudson, Cambridge's Central Square, Arlington, and Sudbury.

An ice cream shop and a doughnut shop that are both based in New York City will be closing its location in Cambridge.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Taiyaki NYC and The Dough Club in Harvard Square are shutting down, with an Instagram post from the business saying the following:

After many sweet memories, it's time to say goodbye. Our shop will be closing on Sunday, November 23, 2025. Come visit us one last time for your favorite mochi donuts & Taiyaki ice cream. Thank you for all the love and support over the years, we couldn't have done it without you.

The note doesn't mention anything about the status of the Taiyaki location in Boston's Seaport District. (The Cambridge location of Taiyaki NYC and The Dough Club debuted in 2022 while the Boston location of Taiyaki opened in 2019.)

ZaZiBar in Boston's Seaport District, Zaz at City Hall Plaza in Downtown Boston Have Closed; Hyde Park Location Remains Open

A couple of locations of a trio of fusion spots in Boston have shut down.

According to an Instagram post, ZaZiBar in the Seaport District and Zaz at City Hall Plaza are no longer in business, with the note saying the following:

Every chapter comes with growth, and this one means a lot to us. As we close our City Hall and ZaZiBar Seaport locations, we just want to take a moment to thank everyone who's supported us over the years. From the City Hall crew who pulled up for lunch every week to the late nights in Seaport filled with music and good vibes, you helped make those spaces special. ZaZ isn't going anywhere. The Fresh Market in Framingham Is Closing

A chain of specialty grocery stores with three locations in Eastern Massachusetts will soon be down to two, as its shop west of Boston is shutting down.

According to a poster within the ChewOnThis Facebook group page, The Fresh Market in Framingham is closing its doors, with the shop shuttering at an as-of-yet undisclosed date (it is currently offering 25% off all items other than alcohol, according to the thread). While the Worcester Road store will be closing, it does look like locations in Hingham and Mansfield will remain in operation.

The Framingham outlet of The Fresh Market opened a bit under a year ago.

Twist & Shake at Revere Beach Is Closing; Winthrop Location to Remain in Operation

A seaside ice cream shop is shutting down after a quarter century in business.

According to an Instagram post from the place, Twist & Shake at Revere Beach is closing its doors on October 13, with the post hinting that it could return in a new space, saying that "this isn't the end of Twist & Shake on Revere Beach - we promise you that. Stay tuned! We will be back! Bigger, Better, and Sweeter than ever." The post also states that their other location on Shirley Street in Winthrop will remain in operation.

The website for Twist & Shake gives a bit of history on the business, saying that "Twist & Shake, established in 1998, has always been family owned and operated. Since 2002, we have continued the tradition of providing the best ice cream at exceptional customer service on Revere Beach." The Winthrop shop debuted in 2008.

The Urban Grape in Boston's South End Has Closed

An award-winning wine shop in Boston has shut down.

A message sent by Leah Klein of City Living Boston mentions that The Urban Grape in the South End has closed its doors, with an Instagram post from owners TJ and Hadley Douglas of the Columbus Avenue store saying the following:

This has been a very difficult year for our company, The Urban Grape. For over 12 months, TJ and I, along with our family and a group of wonderful investors, have worked tirelessly to reach an agreement with our local SBA lender, Cambridge Savings Bank, with the hope of saving and rebuilding the store to its former inventory and success. Unfortunately, negotiations with our lender deteriorated over the past week, and we are being forced to close The Urban Grape’s Boston location immediately.

The post does indicate that TJ and Hadley Douglas may be making plans to bring back the business in some form, saying that "TJ and I spent the last two nights wondering, is this the end of our legacy? The answer is no....To follow along as we reimagine and rebuild our business, please subscribe to our Substack newsletter, The Second Bottle, linked above, and make sure you're following our Instagram page here."

The Urban Grape first opened 13 years ago, focusing mostly on wine while also selling beer and spirits and hosting countless wine tastings, and it has received much in the way of accolades over the years, including being awarded Small Business of the Year by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in 2021.
