Party Favors in Brookline Has Closed

A decades-old bakery in Brookline that was known for its cakes has shut down.

According to its Instagram page, Party Favors in Coolidge Corner is now closed, with the last day in operation for the Beacon Street shop being yesterday. There had an earlier note on its website saying "The news is true, after 35 years we are closing our doors. It has been a pleasure to serve you, and to be a part of your celebrations." while a Brookline News article quoted co-owner John Pergantis as saying that "There's no walking traffic anymore. People are still ordering stuff online. The cake business is great, but we can' t keep it going on just cakes without some other revenue coming in." Co-owner Mary Lynn Pergantis also states that "I don’t think people quite understand the volume of business it takes to pay the bills as a retailer....We really don't need this kind of space anymore, and we really can't justify paying the rent to be in this kind of space anymore."

The article does mention that the business could be reborn in a smaller space, with Mary Lynn saying that "Hopefully we can find something smaller and kind of work it a little differently and build it up and then be able to retire."

The address for the now-closed Party Favors was 1356 Beacon Street, Brookline, MA, 02446.

Barlette, a BYO Bar, Opens in the Coolidge Corner Arcade Building in Brookline

The people behind a reservation-only BYO restaurant in an historic Brookline structure have opened another reservation-only spot in the same building, and this one is a BYO bar.

According to a source, Barlette is now open on the ground floor of the Coolidge Corner Arcade on Harvard Street, joining Cobble, a tiny Italian dining spot upstairs that opened in 2020. Boston Magazine mentions that the new bar offers a four-course bar snack menu while customers can bring their own beer, wine, and spirits, the latter of which can be used to make cocktails thanks to mixers and supplies being available (the workers there can't touch the drinks but can offer knowledge/advice on making drinks as needed).

BoMag says that Barlette is booked through May and that reservations for June will go up on June 1, though people can set up notifications via Resy if there are cancellations this month.

The address for Barlette is 318 Harvard Street # 11 (first floor of Arcade), Brookline, MA, 02446. Its website is at https://www.drinkatbarlette.com/

Allium Market in Brookline's Coolidge Corner Is Planning to Close

It looks like a specialty food shop in one of the busiest sections of Brookline may be saying farewell.

According to Patrick Maguire of Maguire Promotions & Hospitality Consulting, Allium Market in Coolidge Corner is planning to shut down, with an Instagram post from Talia Glass of the Beacon Street shop saying that she is looking for a new owner and/or investors in the hopes that the store could continue on. In the meantime, the plan is for the shop to remain open through August and September, though Glass does say that if she doesn't find the right person(s) to take over the place by the end of September, October 3 will be its last day.

Allium first opened in late 2017, offering cheese, coffee, olive oil, pastries, and more.

The address for Allium Market is 1330 Beacon Street, Brookline, MA, 02446.

[October 5 update: A new Instagram post from the place indicates that Allium Market closed down over the weekend, as they were unable to find a new owner.]
