The C Note in Hull Is Closing

A South Shore music venue that shut down during the early part of the pandemic only to be reborn thanks to fundraisers, benefit concerts, and the sale of merchandise is closing permanently.

According to a Facebook post from the business, The C Note in Hull is going to be shutting down for good, with the note saying the following:

It is with heavy hearts and a deep sense of gratitude that we announce The C Note will soon be closing its doors on Saturday, September 26. After decades of serving as your local music club, the time has come for us to move on. Stepping away from a place that has been our home for so long is incredibly difficult, but we are immensely proud of the incredible run we have shared with all of you. 

Back in the summer of 2020, it was announced that the music club would be shuttering, but a grassroots campaign helped them return the following year. (The C Note had formerly been called the Sea Note, with an ownership change taking place a bit more than 15 years ago.)

The New World Tavern in Plymouth and Tolson's Tap and Tavern in Pembroke Have Both Closed

A couple of dining and drinking spots south of Boston that were known in part for their live music--and which had an ownership connection--have shut down.

According to social media posts from both places, The New World Tavern in Plymouth and Tolson's Tap and Tavern in Pembroke are no longer in business, with the former closing on September 28 and the latter closing on October 5. The New World Tavern first opened 14 years ago, offering food, drink, and featuring a variety of live music acts, while Tolson's Tap and Tavern debuted a bit more than 3 years ago, also serving food and drink and having live music.

The address for The New World Tavern was 56 Main Street, Plymouth, MA, 02360, and the address for Tolson's Tap and Tavern was 15 Columbia Road, Pembroke, MA, 02359.

Palmer's Restaurant & Tavern in Andover Has Closed

A restaurant north of Boston that was known in part for its live music in its tavern area has shut down.

According to a source, Palmer's Restaurant & Tavern in Andover is no longer in business, with a note on the website of the Elm Street spot saying the following:

After 30 wonderful years of serving this incredible community, it is with heavy hearts that we announce the permanent closure of Palmer's Restaurant. This decision was not made lightly. Over the years, we've had the absolute honor of sharing countless meals, celebrations, laughs, and stories with all of you. Many of you have become more than customers - you've become dear friends and a part of our extended family. We are so proud of the memories we've created together and will forever cherish the moments, milestones, and the people that made Palmer's what it was. Thank you for welcoming us into your lives and for allowing us to be a small part of your journey, just as you've been a part of ours.

Palmer's served mostly classic American fare including tenders, sliders, bolognese, sirloin steak, orange cranberry chicken, steak tips, and cheesecake; its first-floor pub featured local music acts on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Great Scott Is Returning to Allston

A landmark music club that shut down a few years ago is being reborn.

According to an article from Vanyaland, Great Scott is going to be opening back up in Allston, moving into a space that is being redeveloped at Harvard Avenue and Cambridge Street and which is home to its sister venue O'Brien's Pub. The article mentions that the new incarnation of the club will be part of a mixed-use space that includes retail and housing, with Great Scott having a capacity of 300 while O'Brien's Pub will remain open and have a capacity of 75. If all goes as planned, Great Scott will be up and running sometime in 2026.

Great Scott, which first started out in 1976 by the corner of Commonwealth Avenue and Harvard Avenue, was one of the most popular music clubs in the region, featuring both local and national bands over the years.

The Porch Southern Fare & Juke Joint in Medford Is Closing

A Southern restaurant that is known in part for its live music is shutting down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, The Porch Southern Fare & Juke Joint in Medford is closing its doors, with a Facebook post from the place saying the following:

It's been real, Boston! Our last day of full service will be July 21. Our last concert will be on July 26 with Big Sandy & his Fly Rite Boys. We sincerely appreciate all the good times you've shared with us over the last 8 years.

The Porch first opened in Wakefield Center in 2016, moving to its present home on Rivers Edge Drive in Medford in 2019 where it has hosted countless rock, blues, jazz, bluegrass, funk, soul, and indie acts while featuring regional cuisines of the South.

Rockwood Music Hall in Boston's Fenway Has Closed

A small music venue in Boston's Fenway neighborhood has closed after less than a year in operation.

According to an article from Vanyaland, Rockwood Music Hall on Van Ness Street shut down as of May 1, with a note on the website for the place saying the following:

As a business that depends on bar sales to survive, unfortunately we were not generating enough to make operating sustainable. Thank you for all your support. All shows beyond Apr. 30th have been cancelled, tickets will be refunded automatically within 7 business days.

Rockwood first opened in the summer of 2023, having a connection to Rockwood Music Hall in Manhattan; the Boston space had a capacity of 120 and mainly featured local acts.

Stanzy's Country Ranch in Peabody Has Closed, Will Be Replaced a by New Pub

A Southern-influenced restaurant, bar, and music spot on the North Shore has shut down, and a new dining and drinking spot will be replacing it.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page (via a North Shore Dining post), Stanzy's Country Ranch in Peabody has shuttered, with a note from the Main Street place saying that they are selling the business to the landlord who will be opening a pub within the space. The note mentions that gift cards can be used at the upcoming pub or at Rivalry in Salem, which is under the same ownership as Stanzy's.

Stanzy's Country Ranch first opened its doors at the end of 2019.

The Cut Opens in Gloucester on November 20

A brand new place for food, drink, live music, and more is getting ready to open on the North Shore.

According to a press release, The Cut is slated to open in Gloucester on November 20, with a ribbon cutting for the Main Street spot taking place that day. The new place, which gets its name from the nickname for the Blynman Bridge that spans the channel between the city's Outer Harbor and the Annisquam River, will include a restaurant and bar with seating for 180, an entertainment venue with seating for 300 (and general admission for 500 total), and rehearsal and recording studio space--and the entertainment area will be used for local, regional, and national music acts, with an earlier Gloucester Times article also mentioning its being used for comedy and film.

Grace by Nia Opens in Boston's Seaport District on May 11

More than a year after its plans were first announced, it looks like a new restaurant, bar, and live music venue is just about ready to open along the Boston waterfront.

According to an article from Eater Boston, Grace by Nia is slated to open on Thursday, May 11 in the Seaport District, with the place being a "supper club" that is a partnership between Nia Grace (Darryl’s in the South End) and Big Night (a hospitality group that runs such spots as The Grand, Empire, Scorpion Bar, Red Lantern, and Mystique). Eater mentions that the new 5,000-square-foot venue will offer Southern-style food and New England-style seafood options while beer, wine, and cocktails will be available, and local acts will be on the bill there, including jazz, funk, and R&B/soul acts.

Atwood's Tavern in Cambridge Is Closing

A beloved restaurant, bar, and music venue in Cambridge is saying farewell.

According to a Facebook post from the place, Atwood's Tavern on Cambridge Street is getting ready to shut down permanently, with the post saying the following:

Atwood's Tavern will be closing our doors for the last time on March 31st. We would like to wholeheartedly thank everyone who has been a part of our community over the past 16 years. Atwood's wouldn't be Atwood's without all of you. So, if you get the chance, come by in the next month to say farewell....Thanks for all of the good times and memories.

The post hints that a new restaurant/bar could be taking over the space, saying that "This place has been a neighborhood spot and will continue to be....While we don't know yet who will be picking up the mantle, we are confident that they will provide the neighborhood with the community space it deserves."

Atwood's is known for its comfort food, extensive beer list, and wine and cocktail options while also hosting countless local bands and acts over the years.

The Futures of Christopher's and Toad in Cambridge's Porter Square Are Now in Doubt

It looks like two beloved spots in the Porter Square section of Cambridge face a very uncertain future.

Cambridge Day confirms what a source told us over the weekend, that the owners of Christopher's will not be reopening the place and that Toad--which is next door--may be going away as well, depending on whether Cambridge Eats and Beats (the group that also runs Cambridge Common and Lizard Lounge) sells the building or just sells the restaurant and the bar to new owners. Christopher's has been closed since the start of the pandemic in the spring of 2020 while Toad did reopen--and according to co-owner Holly Heslop, it will remain open "until we turn over the keys to someone."

Christopher's, which has been in operation for more than 40 years, was known for its classic American fare and cozy digs (including a fireplace) while Toad is a bar and no-cover music club that has featured countless local acts over the years.

Christopher's was at 1920 Massachusetts Avenue while Toad is at 1912 Massachusetts Avenue.

Goodnight Johnny's Music Bar Is Opening in Burlington

It looks like a restaurant and live music venue may be on its way to the northern suburbs of Boston.

According to a source, Goodnight Johnny's Music Bar is looking to open in Burlington, moving into a space within The Shoppes at Simonds Park on Cambridge Street on the edge of the town center. An article from BCAT mentions that John Tebow--who is an investor and partner of The Bancroft restaurant in Burlington--is partnering with his wife to open the place, which would offer comfort food and feature live jazz, 80s cover bands, and more.

Dire Wolf Tavern Is Replacing Opus in Salem

A North Shore restaurant and bar known in part for its live music venue downstairs is shutting down and being replaced by a new spot under the same ownership.

According to an article from Vanyaland, Opus in Salem is closing its doors, with the restaurant part on the ground floor planning to say farewell after business hours on Saturday, January 7 while the Opus Underground music club had its final night on New Year's Eve. The post mentions that parent company Serenitee Restaurant Group (Maggie's Farm, 15 Walnut, Cala's Restaurant, Hale Street Tavern, The Spot, Minglewood Harborside, Alchemy), is reconcepting the space, though no details have been given as to the plans--and it doesn't appear that live music will be part of those plans.

The Breakaway in Danvers Has Closed

A live music venue on the North Shore has shut down.

According to a source, The Breakaway in Danvers is no longer in business, with a Facebook post from the Route 1 spot saying the following on New Year's Eve:

Happy New Year!!! Months ago I announced that tonight would be the last night at Breakaway. I wasn’t sure how the news would be taking but I hoped for the best. From our crew, musicians, regular guests (family), and all of you, I can’t say thank you enough. The support, encouragement, and outpouring of love has been overwhelming. Our management team and crew decided to announce it and try to go out on top. A farewell tour that anyone who wanted to be a part of was invited to. On behalf of the Breakaway team I can say we are humbled and grateful.

In addition to live music, The Breakaway also offered dining and drinking along with events, functions, and classes.

Jazz Urbane Cafe Still Planning to Open in Roxbury

A few years ago, it was reported that a cafe featuring live music could be coming to an historic building in Roxbury. Now we have learned that the plans are still on the table and appear to be moving forward.

According to an article from Universal Hub, Jazz Urbane Cafe continues to look at opening within the Ferdinand storefront section of the Bolling Building in Nubian Square. The people behind the proposed spot--Nia Grace of Darryl's Corner Kitchen & Bar, Berkeley Professor Bill Banfield, and entrepreneur Turahn Dorsey--will need to get approval for a variance by the Zoning Board of Appeal due to a lack of parking, as well as licenses to serve food and drink. If they get the green light to open, the new spot would feature live jazz music from both local and national performers (including acts from Banfield's Jazz Urbane record label) while the space may also be used for community events.

As mentioned earlier, the Bolling Building dates back to the 1880s.

Hotel Proposed for Middle East Space in Cambridge's Central Square

The exact future of one of the region's best-known music complexes continues to be unknown, especially based on a new proposal now on the table that mentions the potential tearing down of the building.

According to an article from Cambridge Day (via a Cambridge Historical Commission Meeting notice), The Sater family--who own The Middle East along with the property itself--have put out a plan that would demolish the Mass. Ave. structure and replace it with a six-story hotel that would have two stages for live entertainment. A blueprint posted shows that the basement has a section labeled "Middle East Music Venue" while the first floor has a section simply labeled "Music Venue," and the first floor also shows three spaces for retail while the 6th floor has a restaurant/bar space. Cambridge Day mentions that there is a request to postpone the September 8 meeting which could mean that the proposal might not be heard until next month at the earliest, as the next commission meeting is slated to take place on October 6.

Nabil and Joseph Sater, who purchased The Middle East in 2014, put the site up for sale in early 2020, though the listing was ultimately taken down and no sale took place.

[September 19 update: A Facebook post from the place indicates that The Middle East apparently won't be going anywhere, with the note saying that "Over the coming months, we and our team will present a plan to improve the Middle East, in cooperation with CSQ Realty, to include a two stage music venue, a modernized restaurant and event space, and a lounge, as well as a hotel and retail space....The Middle East plans to remain open until such time as the planned renovations are to take place, which we currently expect to occur no earlier than 2024. While there may be a short interruption during the redevelopment of the space, rest assured that the Middle East will remain the venue that our customers, performers, friends, and neighbors have come to love for years and decades to come."]

Lizard Lounge in Cambridge Is Reopening

A popular basement music spot that has been closed since the start of the pandemic is finally getting ready to open back up.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Lizard Lounge in Cambridge is reopening on September 30, with an Instagram post from the place--which resides underneath Cambridge Common on Mass. Ave. between Porter Square and Harvard Square--saying that "It's true, Lizard Lounge is reopening...after almost 2 and a half years of being closed due to the pandemic. Stay tuned for more information, we are so excited to be back." The people behind Cambridge Common and Lizard Lounge also run Christopher's, a restaurant and bar in Porter Square that remains shuttered though it looks like that place may open back up soon as well.

A cafe west of Boston that offered coffee, tea, baked goods, and lighter fare and was also seen as a community center of sorts has shut down.

According to a source, Serendipity Cafe in Maynard is no longer in business, with the website for the Nason Street spot indicating that it closed its doors permanently in late June. The eatery, which first opened in 2014, featured live music and displayed local art over the years, while its menu included muffins, crepes, salads, and sandwiches.

Brick & Ash in Newburyport Has Closed

A North Shore restaurant that was also a popular spot for live music has shut down.

According to a source, Brick & Ash in Newburyport is now longer in business, with a Facebook post from the Center Street spot confirming this yesterday while saying "First and foremost, thank you! We have truly enjoyed bringing live music to Newburyport. We also appreciate the support from our loyal customers and the patience from our neighbors." Brick & Ash first opened approximately five years ago, offering mostly comfort food items including grilled cheese, wings, taco bowls, shepherd's pie, turkey tips, fried chicken, shrimp and grits, and meatloaf, while beer, wine, and cocktails were offered as well. (The restaurant also had djs and live bands on weekends.)

Railway Tavern Opens in Beverly

A new spot for food, drink, and live music has debuted on the North Shore.

According to an article in the Herald Citizen/Wicked Local, Railway Tavern is now open in Beverly, moving into the space at The Flats at 131 on Rantoul Street that had been home to En Fuego. The post mentions that the new restaurant and bar offers local craft beers, cocktails, and music seven days a week, though its food options have not been given as of yet as a menu has not been posted on its website.

The article says that Railway Tavern opened its doors on September 1.
