Dorchester Food Co-op Is in Danger of Closing, Could Be Shutting Down in Two Months

It looks like the future of a community grocery store and cafe in Boston that debuted a couple of years ago is in question.

According to a notice from the business, Dorchester Food Co-op may have to shut down soon, with the post from the Bowdoin Street spot saying the following:

URGENT: Facing Closure in Two Months, Please Shop to Keep the Dorchester Food Co-op....Please, support what you own: now and each week, the Co-op needs an increase in sales or else the cash reserves for operational costs will run out in two short months!...We're committed to doing everything we can in the next few months. Please join us—shop, share, give, and order catering today.

Dorchester Food Co-op first opened in the fall of 2023, being billed (when it debuted) as "Boston’s only community- and worker-owned food co-op" and featuring fresh, organic foods, with its focus being on bringing affordable, healthy options to the neighborhood.

The website for Dorchester Food Co-op is 195 Bowdoin Street, Dorchester, MA, 02122. Its website is at https://www.dorchesterfoodcoop.com/

Daily Table Is Closing All of Its Stores

A local group of nonprofit community grocers that help provide food to those in need is ceasing operations.

According to a Facebook post from the business, Daily Table is shutting down all of its markets, with the post saying the following:

With heavy hearts, we share that Daily Table will be closing our doors within the next few days. This was not an easy decision. For the past 10 years, we have had the honor of serving neighborhoods across Greater Boston, working alongside our community to make affordable, nutritious food accessible to all. We are proud to have served over 3 million customers, returning over $16 million in savings to the community while removing the barriers to healthy food. The past several years have been particularly hard; navigating the challenges of COVID-19, plus the pressures of facing historically high levels of food price increases, to the current uncertain and difficult funding environment, sustaining Daily Table has become increasingly difficult. Without immediate funding to bridge us through 2025, we cannot continue. After careful consideration, we have come to the heartbreaking conclusion that we can no longer continue operations.

Please know that due to the urgency of the situation, we were unable to individually reach out to all of our longstanding partners, and we apologize if this news comes as a shock. We understand that this comes at a time when other food access resources and organizations are at risk, which makes this news even more difficult to share. We hope that those who have been generous to Daily Table will continue investing in other organizations to meet the ongoing need.

The note refers customers who may be in need of support to this link within the City of Boston website: https://www.boston.gov/departments/food-justice/food-resources

A note on its website says that Daily Table's markets in Dorchester, Roxbury, and Salem will close after business hours on Sunday, May 11, while the market in Cambridge's Central Square, will remain open through Monday, May 12. (Another store had been in Mattapan but it closed at the beginning of the year.) The website for Daily Table can be found at https://www.dailytable.org/

Dorchester Brewing Company and Aeronaut Brewing to Merge

A couple of local breweries are going to be joining forces.

According to posters within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page along with an Instagram post, Dorchester Brewing Company and Aeronaut Brewing in Somerville and Everett are merging, with the Instagram post saying the following:

As two likeminded local brands with similar missions to create the highest-quality craft beer while positively impacting our communities, this partnership will usher in a new era of innovation in the local craft beer scene. Never fear, the beer you know and love will continue to be brewed and enjoyed by all. Both beer brands are staying as is and functioning independently - just now under one parent company allowing us to make things even better! For you, our customers, nothing really changes on your end. You get to continue enjoying all your favorite beers from both DBC and Aeronaut at each of our local taprooms and throughout the local beer scene. We are moving Aeronaut's larger-scale production to our Dorchester location, while the Aeronaut team will continue to brew small batch beers for their own taprooms at their Somerville location, with the Everett Cannery taproom continuing to operate into 2024. We are beyond excited about this partnership and look forward to what the future brings!

Dorchester Brewing Company debuted on Massachusetts Avenue in 2016, while Aeronaut Brewing first opened on Tyler Street in Somerville in 2014 (its Everett cannery was launched on Ashland Street in 2020). The website for the former is at https://www.dorchesterbrewing.com/ while the website for the latter is at https://www.aeronautbrewing.com/

Dorchester Brewing Company to Add a Restaurant, Greenhouse, and Roofdeck to Space

by Marc Hurwitz

It looks like a brewery just south of downtown Boston has some big plans in the works.

According to an article from WBUR, Dorchester Brewing Company is looking to add a restaurant to its space, with a rooftop greenhouse and a roofdeck included in its plans along with a larger tasting room. The post mentions that the restaurant will be run by a local food truck and that it will focus on barbecue, while the greenhouse will be surrounded by the roofdeck and will have a fireplace and a beer bar. If all goes as planned, the new expansion should be up and running by October.

Dorchester Brewing Company, which first opened in the summer of 2016, was the first dedicated contract brewing facility to open in Boston--and the entire state of Massachusetts. The beers produced here come from both the people behind the brewery itself along with other brewers in the local area and beyond.

The address for Dorchester Brewing Company is 1250 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston, MA, 02125. Its website can be found at http://www.dorchesterbrewing.com/

Dot Tavern in Dorchester Has Closed; Exact Status Up in the Air

by Marc Hurwitz

Yet another dive bar has closed down, though there is a chance that this one could reopen, at least for a little while longer.

According to an article in the Dorchester Reporter, Dot Tavern shut its doors last month, though local real estate developer Doug George--who purchased the Dorchester Avenue building in which the bar resides--is looking for someone to open the place back up as soon as possible. The post says that George ultimately plans to have major renovations done to the space and have a spot that focuses more on food, but that might not be completed for at least a year, so in the meantime, he would like to reopen the Dot Tavern for the time being.

The address for the Dot Tavern is 840 Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester, MA, 02125.

Bruno's Brewery Planning to Open in Dorchester

by Marc Hurwitz

Another new brewery is being planned for Boston, and this one may be coming to a little peninsula along the Neponset River.

According to a licensing board hearing page within the City of Boston website, Bruno's Brewery is seeking a Farmer Brewery Pouring License to operate in the Port Norfolk section of Dorchester, with the Ericsson Street address indicating that it will be opening next to Boston Winery. An earlier post on massbrewbros.com indicates that Ralph and Vito Bruno of Boston Winery are actually behind the brewery, which plans to have two rooms and an outdoor patio.

The Port Norfolk peninsula, which is basically cut off from the rest of Dorchester (and Boston) by the Southeast Expressway, is also home to Boston Harbor Distillery and Venezia Restaurant.

The address for the upcoming Bruno's Brewery is 24 Ericsson Street, Dorchester, MA, 02122.

[April 24 update: Eater Boston states that Bruno's Brewery hopes to open this fall, and that it will initially offer seven or eight beers only at the Dorchester facility, though the owners may look at getting involved in distribution of the beers at some point. The post also says that the business will be able to use the Boston Winery space next door for events once it opens, with room there for up to 120 people.]

[March 12, 2020 update: The long-awaited Bruno's Brewery may finally be one step closer to opening in Dorchester by this week, as a new licensing board hearing page indicates that its Farmer Brewery Pouring Permit was expected to be looked at last night-and the notice shows that the place could include an outdoor patio.]

After Fire, American Provisions in South Boston Looks to Open New Shop in Dorchester in 2018

by Marc Hurwitz

Early last year, we reported that an artisanal "farm-to-table" grocery store in South Boston was planning to expand with a second shop on the way to an upcoming Dorchester development. Now we have learned that plans for the store are still moving ahead even after a fire heavily damaged the complex over the summer, but it won't be opening for awhile now.

According to an article in Eater Boston, American Provisions is now looking to open in the Treadmark Building on Dorchester Avenue in the fall of 2018, with owner Matt Thayer saying that the shop will open in the same space as originally planned and that it will still include a full kitchen, which will allow it to offer more in the way of prepared foods than the original store in Southie. (It will also allow them to do catering and host events, according to Eater.) The Treadmark Building was ravaged by a fire last June, though the building was not considered a total loss and is in the process of being rebuilt.

The original location of American Provisions can be found at 613 E. Broadway in South Boston. Its website is at http://americanprovisions.com/

[January 15, 2019 update: American Provisions did not end up opening its new location in Dorchester in 2018, but Caught in Dot mentions that it now hopes to open around the end of January or early in February.]

American Provisions in South Boston to Open New Shop in Dorchester

An artisanal "farm-to-table" grocery store in South Boston is going to be joined by a second shop in another neighborhood of the city.

Boston Magazine is reporting that American Provisions has gotten approval from the city of Boston to open in an upcoming development on Dorchester Avenue in the Ashmont section of Dorchester. Based on an earlier article in the Dorchester Reporter, plans had been in the works for the new shop for awhile, though co-owners Matt Thayer and Andy Fadous told Boston Magazine that they were trying to keep quiet about it until they got the green light from the city.

The new shop in Dorchester, which hopes to open this summer, will have approximately 1,500 square feet of retail space, with cheeses, charcuterie, and local and specialty products offered, and unlike the South Boston store, this one will have a full kitchen which will allow it to offer more in the way of prepared foods. The owners also plan to acquire a beer and wine license at some point, according to Boston Magazine.

The original location of American Provisions can be found at 613 E. Broadway in South Boston. Its website is at http://americanprovisions.com/

[March 17 update: The new location of American Provisions in Dorchester could be one step closer to opening by next week, as a licensing hearing page indicates that its request for a common victualler license will be looked at by the city of Boston on Wednesday, March 22.]

It looks like a brand new distillery is coming to a Boston neighborhood, and it will be located within an historic structure by the water.

Eater Boston reports that Boston Harbor Distillery is planning to open within the old Putnam Nail Factory/Lawley Shipyard complex that is located on the Port Norfolk peninsula in Dorchester (just east of Tenean Beach and the Southeast Expressway by the Neponset River). The article mentions that a couple of big names are behind the proposed distillery, including Rhonda Kallman, who co-founded The Boston Beer Company (which is known for its Samuel Adams brand of beer), and Corey Bunnewith, who has worked at such places as Coppa and Drink. Update: Kam Man Market "Sealed Off" from South Bay Center

In April, we reported that an Asian supermarket just south of downtown Boston had apparently closed, with its status being unclear at the time. Now we have learned a bit more about what exactly is going on.

The Dorchester Reporter mentions that Kam Man has been "sealed off" from South Bay Center near the Southeast Expressway in Dorchester due to a dispute concerning the planned addition of a Dollar Tree store within the space. The article says that  E&A Northeast Limited Partnership, which owns the shopping center, has been against the market sharing its space with the store, and once signs went up for the Dollar Tree in late April, jersey barriers were set up at the entrance of the market's parking lot, which kept customers and delivery trucks from being able to get into the lot. The store is now closed and the dispute is heading to court, with a hearing taking place on June 23 in Suffolk Superior Court.

According to the article, the building in which Kam Man resides is not owned by E&A, but the market's sole access is by way of Allstate Road, which is mostly owned by the company. The post says that according to court documents, E&A agreed to allow the previous market in the space (Super 88) to use the access road in exchange for an annual sum over the course of a 20-year period, with the deal including "limiting the total area of the building and restricting certain commercial use within the building itself." Earlier this year, Kam Man told E&A about its plans, which was opposed by the company because they said it was in violation of the lease agreement that Kam Man assumed from Super 88. E&A then made an offer on the Kam Man building, but the offer was rejected and the barriers went up soon after the Dollar Tree signs were posted.

The address for Kam Man in South Bay is 101 Allstate Road, Dorchester, MA, 02125.

Former Trader Joe's President to Open Dorchester Market That Sells Expired Food

The former head of an eclectic grocery store chain is looking to open a market in a Boston neighborhood, and it would apparently be selling "expired" foods to low-income folks, among other affordable items.

The Boston Globe is reporting that Doug Rauch, the ex-president of Trader Joe's, is planning to bring a 10,000-square-foot food store to Dorchester as part of his Urban Food Initiative. The article says that the market will be stocked with foods that are near or just past their sell-by dates that may otherwise go to waste, and would include healthy takeout items, packaged vegetables, and milk at low prices. A teaching kitchen may also be part of the store, which will be in a building that is owned by the Codman Square Health Center, according to the Globe.

The article mentions that Massachusetts state law allows for the selling of expired food in stores, though it must be "wholesome" and "aesthetically pleasing," and it has to be marked as expired and in a separate area from products that have not yet reached their sell-by date.

[January 23, 2014 update: Fox News mentions that the new market, which will be called Daily Table, is planning to open in Dorchester in May. The article also says that in addition to expired food, the grocery store will also sell items that have damaged packaging as well as "repurposed" food.]

[June 5, 2015 update: According to a post on its Facebook page, Daily Table is now open, with the address being 450 Washington Street (by Park Street) in Dorchester. The market's website can be found at http://dailytable.org/]
