T Market Plans to Open in the Former Wegmans Space at Natick Mall

It looks like a high-end Asian supermarket may be on its way to the western suburbs of Boston.

According to Kiat Cormier of the ChewOnThis Facebook group page (via a Natick Report article), T Market is planning to open at Natick Mall, taking over the space that had been home to a location of Wegmans until it closed in the summer of 2023 after five years in business. The Natick Report article mentions that the new market will have about 90,000 square feet of space and will include a food court with a number of Asian street food vendors.

The article states that T Market is currently in the planning and permitting stages, and if all goes well, it could be opening by the end of the year.

H Mart Is Opening in Somerville's Davis Square

It looks like an Asian supermarket chain is going to be opening a new location in Somerville, confirming chatter that has been taking place for a number of months now.

According to an article in The Tufts Daily, H Mart is planning to open in Davis Square, moving into the space on Elm Street that had been home to a location of bfresh. The article states that employees at locations in Burlington and Cambridge mentioned the upcoming opening, with one worker indicating that it could be opening sometime this summer. (An earlier LLC filing seems to confirm the planned opening as well.)

In addition to the Burlington and Cambridge locations, H Mart (which first started out in Queens in 1982) also has two other Boston-area outlets in Brookline and Quincy, and another one may be coming to Medford as well.

H Mart to Open in Medford

An Asian supermarket chain with four locations in the Greater Boston area is planning to open another outlet in the region.

According to a page within the Medford Chamber of Commerce website, H Mart is planning to open on Middlesex Street, with the address indicating that it will move into a space within the Townline Plaza where Medford and Malden meet. An earlier post on the bldup.com site mentioned this as well, saying that "WS Development has filed plans for a tenant fitout of roughly 25,000 square feet of vacant space at the retail shopping plaza adjacent to CMF Surgeons." Once it opens, the new location of H Mart will join others in Burlington, Brookline, Cambridge, and Quincy

H Mart first started out in Queens in 1982.

H Mart Is Opening in Brookline

An Asian supermarket chain that has three locations in the Greater Boston area is opening a fourth.

According to a tweet from @PatrickMBoston, H Mart is planning to open in Brookline, moving into the space on Beacon Street that had been home to a location of Whole Foods. It is not known when it might open (the signs out front simply say "coming soon), but once it does, the new H Mart will join others in Burlington, Cambridge's Central Square, and Quincy.

H Mart, which started out in Queens in 1982, currently has nearly 100 stores across the United States.

Sin City Superette Opens in Lynn

A brand new community market from the team behind an award-winning North Shore restaurant has debuted nearly two years after its plans were first announced.

According to a press release, Sin City Superette is now open in Lynn, moving into the space on Exchange Street that is adjacent to Nightshade Noodle Bar. Rachel Miller, who is executive chef/owner of both the restaurant and the market, says that "It means a lot to me to provide everyday essentials, affordable raw, hot and cold prepared foods and offer more EBT to my neighborhood as we all continue to recover from the pandemic....The idea for Sin City Superette stemmed from pandemic response, realizing that we could be so much more useful to the community, while creating more jobs in our growing neighborhood, if we rearranged our resources and extended our reach beyond what Nightshade Noodle Bar was built to offer." Sin City Superette offers produce, meat, seafood, hot and cold prepared foods to-go, sushi, everyday grocery items, household goods, and more.

Nightshade Noodle Bar is a French and Vietnamese restaurant that has received much praise since opening its doors in the fall of 2019, including being mentioned within the Suburban Standouts section of a Boston Magazine "Best Restaurants of Boston" page.

Amazon Fresh Supermarkets Plan to Open in Braintree, Saugus

A new grocery chain is on its way to the Greater Boston area, and it has a very familiar name.

An article from the Boston Business Journal states that Amazon Fresh is planning to open in Saugus, while the Patriot Ledger mentions that another location will be opening in Braintree. As indicated in both articles, the grocery store will use the latest technology to allow customers to do "walk out" shopping in which they scan their Amazon app, which tallies up the items in their carts as they shop, allowing them to skip the checkout line (customers can also shop the traditional way as well). In addition, Alexa will be set up at kiosks, with the Amazon virtual assistant helping customers find specific items.

Amazon also owns Whole Foods, which is more of a specialty market that focuses on organic foods while Amazon Fresh offers a wider variety of food items.

The Braintree location of Amazon Fresh will reside in the old Saks space at the Marketplace at Braintree on Grossman Drive, while the Saugus location will be located at the Saugus Plaza Shopping Center near where Route 1 and Walnut Street meet.

Nightshade Noodle Bar Team Plans to Open Sin City Superette in Lynn

A brand new grocery store is coming to the North Shore, and the people behind a restaurant with Vietnamese influences will be opening it next door to the dining spot.

Eater Boston is reporting that Sin City Superette is opening in Lynn, taking over a space next to Nightshade Noodle Bar on Exchange Street in the downtown area of the city. The Nightshade team will be selling such items as everyday groceries, prepared foods, coffee, household items, and more, with delivery being offered--and the delivery fee will be waived for elderly customers and people with disabilities. If all goes as planned, Sin City Superette will be opening sometime this fall.

Chef Rachel Miller opened Nightshade Noodle Bar in October of 2019, with the restaurant offering Vietnamese-American fare along with beer, wine, and cocktails; the place is currently open for pickup and delivery and also has an outdoor patio as well.

The address for Nightshade Noodle Bar is 73 Exchange Street, and we have been told by the restaurant that the address for Sin City Superette will be 71 Exchange Street, as they are taking over the PG Discount Furniture Store to the right of Nightshade. C-Mart on Lincoln Street in Boston's Chinatown Has Apparently Closed for Good

It looks like an Asian market in the Chinatown neighborhood of Boston has closed its doors permanently.

According to a Twitter post from @FortPointer, C-Mart on Lincoln Street is shuttered and a source mentions that it "is not expected to re-open," with @JCCraves responding that it has indeed closed for good. An earlier tweet from @FortPointer last month had stated that the grocery store was locked up and with a sign posted out front, though a request for a translation of the sign was unsuccessful so it is not known exactly what the sign had said.

Another C-Mart on nearby Herald Street on the northern edge of the South End appears to remain in business; a third had once been in operation on Washington Street on the western edge of Chinatown, though that shop closed back in 2013. (Another location is still in operation in Quincy as well.)

Blue Dalia Restaurant & Tequila Bar within Wegmans in Natick Is Closing

A full-service Mexican restaurant and bar that is located within a suburban supermarket is closing.

According to a source, Blue Dalia Restaurant &amp Tequila Bar inside Wegmans at the Natick Mall is shutting down tomorrow, with a Facebook comment from the market confirming that Saturday is indeed its last day in operation. No reason has been given for its closure, nor is it known what might go into the space, so stay tuned for updates.

Blue Dalia, whose website claims that it has "the best Mexican food in Boston," focuses on modern Mexican fare along with an array of tequila options and cocktails. The restaurant opened in May of 2018, a few days after Wegmans opened.

Brothers Marketplace Opens in the Kendall Square Section of Cambridge

Nearly two years after it was first announced, the Cambridge outlet of an upscale neighborhood market has arrived.

As mentioned in an earlier article, Brothers Marketplace opens today in Cambridge's Kendall Square, with Roche Bros. being behind the brand. The grocery store, which is located on Broadway, joins others in Duxbury, Medfield, Waltham, and Weston, and features local products, baked goods and pastries, prepared meals made in-house,coffee, and more.

Hello Brother Supermarket and Bakery Is Opening in Burlington

It looks like a new grocery store and place for baked goods is on its way to the northern suburbs.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Hello Brother is planning to open in Burlington, moving into a space within a warehouse building on Cambridge Street that is also home to Ritu Ki Rasoi restaurant. Based on its Facebook page and website, it appears that Hello Brother will be an Indian supermarket and bakery that will include produce, baked goods, frozen items, and more. The Facebook page says that the place is expected to open in June, though as of yesterday, it was not open and no specific opening date has been given as of yet.

Wegmans Opens at the Natick Mall

A chain of supermarkets that is based in Rochester, NY, has opened a new location in the local area, and this one has been a long time in the making.

As reported earlier, Wegmans opened today at the Natick Mall on Route 9, taking over the two-story space where JC Penney had once been. The market, which has nearly 150,000 square feet of space, also has a handful of dining options including a Mexican restaurant called Blue Dalia and a burger, sandwich, and salad spot called The Burger Bar.

The new Wegmans (which has been in the works since the summer of 2015) joins other Massachusetts locations in Burlington, Chestnut Hill, Medford, Northborough, and Westwood.

Brothers Marketplace Plans to Open at One Broadway in Cambridge's Kendall Square

A local supermarket chain is further expanding its upscale neighborhood market concept, with a new location now being planned for Cambridge.

The Boston Hospitality and Tourism Industry Blog states (via The Boston Globe) that Roche Bros. is looking to open a new location of Brothers Marketplace in Kendall Square, with the grocery store coming to the ground floor of One Broadway (where Broadway, Main Street, and Third Street meet). Last month, we reported that another outlet of Brothers Marketplace will be coming to the Merc at Moody and Main apartment building in Waltham, with that one on the way sometime in the spring of 2018; it appears that the Cambridge location won't be opening until 2019, so for the time being, the Waltham location will be its third (joining others in Weston and Medfield) and the Kendall Square location could be its fourth. [Ed note: The Waltham shop is now open, and a Duxbury location has opened as well, so the Cambridge outlet will be its fifth.]

The two locations of Brothers Marketplace are small grocery stores that feature fresh foods and regional products; another shop had been planned for Somerville's Davis Square, but it fell through and a location of bfresh (a small-market concept affiliated with Stop & Shop) opened in the Elm Street space earlier this year.

Wegmans Opens in Medford

A chain of supermarkets that has been slowly expanding through the Greater Boston area over the past several years has opened its latest location in a space where a shopping mall had been.

As reported earlier, Wegmans opens today in Medford at the site of the old Meadow Glen Mall, nearly two years after the location was first announced. The new grocery store joins other locations in Burlington, Chestnut Hill, Northborough, and Westwood, with an upcoming store planned for the Natick Mall as well. (A proposed Fenway location is on hold for now.) An earlier Boston Magazine article mentioned that the Medford location of Wegmans has a total area of 120,000 square feet and includes a market cafe area with various dining options.

Wegmans, which first got its start in Rochester, NY, opened its first Massachusetts location in Northborough in the fall of 2011.

Plans for Wegmans to Open in Boston's Fenway Neighborhood Hit a Snag

A few years ago, we reported that a location of a popular chain of supermarkets was being planned for Boston's Fenway area. Now we have learned that these plans are now in question.

According to an article in the Boston Business Journal, Wegmans Food Markets said today that it is "unlikely" it will be opening in the first phase of development of the Landmark Center, and that while it will continue to be in talks with developer Samuels & Associates, no lease has been signed for the grocery store. The renovation and expansion of the Landmark Center, which was approved in 2013, is expected to include apartments, retail, office space, and parking space, with the original plan being for Wegmans to reside in a 75,000-square-foot space in a "food hall" within the development.

Currently, locations of Wegmans can be found in Burlington, Chestnut Hill, Northborough, and Westwood, with upcoming stores planned for Medford and the Natick Mall. The website for Wegmans can be found at http://www.wegmans.com/

[April 4, 2017 update: The Boston Herald mentions (in an article on a park coming to the Landmark Center property) that Samuels & Associates is modifying the expansion plans for the development, and when asked about the status of Wegmans coming to the complex, principal Peter Sougarides said that "We're still working though that. There are some physical changes to the building that are changing how we do the retail."]

[August 20, 2017 update: A new article in The Boston Globe says that plans for Wegmans to open in the Fenway now appear to be "in doubt," citing issues with parking, as keeping most or all of the existing parking garage could make it difficult to have a large grocery store included in the complex. The article mentions that Wegmans still does not have a lease, though the supermarket chain will apparently continue to be in contact with Samuels & Associates about possibly of opening a store at the site at some point in the future.]

Sun Sun Supermarket in Boston's Chinatown Has Closed

A decades-old grocery store in Boston that was one of the last of the independents in the city's downtown area has shut down.

According to an article from the Boston Chinatown Blog from back in September, it appeared that Sun Sun Company on Oxford Street was going to be closing at that time, with a message sent from the author of the post telling us this week that the market has indeed shuttered. A Chowhound post indicates that Sun Sun may have closed sometime in early October but an exact date for its closure is not known.

The Boston Chinatown Blog says that Sun Sun was "one of the first Chinese Supermarkets in Boston's Chinatown if not the first. And...one of the last old school style mom and pop supermarkets to last." The Manta site states that it was established in 1964, though it may have been even older than that, based on information from a Google search.

Trader Joe's to Open in Allston

A California-based chain of specialty grocery stores is going to be opening its second shop within the Boston city limits--and this one will be located in a new development near the Charles River and Harvard University.

The Boston Business Journal is reporting that Trader Joe's will open in Allston, moving into a space within the Continuum, which will be a residential and retail complex by the corner of Western Avenue and North Harvard Street. Once it opens in 2017, it will join another store in the Back Bay, along with others in Cambridge (2), Brookline, Acton, Arlington, Burlington, Foxborough, Framingham, Hanover, Hingham, Needham, Newton, and Peabody--and an upcoming shop at Assembly Square in Somerville. Trader Joe's first started out in Pasadena in the 1960s and is now headquartered in Monrovia.

Kam Man Building in Boston's South Bay Is Being Demolished

An Asian supermarket just south of downtown Boston that was closed and then "sealed off" due to a dispute is in the process of being leveled.

According to a photo posted on LinkedIn, the Kam Man building at the South Bay shopping center is being demolished, though it is not known what exactly will be happening to the space. As reported earlier, a new open-air mixed-use development called South Bay Town Center is coming to the area, so it is possible that the Kam Man site will be included as part of the complex.

Kam Man closed its doors in April of 2014, with the store subsequently being blocked off from the rest of South Bay by jersey barriers, apparently because of an issue concerning the planned addition of a Dollar Tree store within the space. Another location of Kam Man in Quincy remains in operation.

Big Y to Replace Eight Hannaford Markets in Eastern Massachusetts

An independent chain of supermarkets based in Springfield is looking to have much more of a presense in the Greater Boston area at the expense of another grocery chain that is going through a merger.

CBS Boston is reporting that Big Y plans to take over eight locations of Hannaford in the eastern part of the state, with this being part of a divestment resulting from the proposed merger of Royal Ahold NV--which owns the Quincy-based Stop & Shop--and Delhaize Group--which owns the Scarborough, ME-based Hannaford (the merger could be finalized by early September). The article says that the Hannaford stores slated to become Big Y outlets includes shops in Easton, Kingston, Milford, Norwell, Norwood, Quincy, Peabody, and Saugus, and that Big Y hopes to keep as many employees from the Hannaford stores as it can.

Currently, the only location of Big Y in the Greater Boston area is in Walpole, while the closing of the Hannaford stores mentioned above will mean that the Waltham location will be the only shop remaining in the Boston area.

[September 13 update: A new post from CBS Boston indicates that all eight of the local Hannaford markets that were slated to close have shut down, with the Easton, Kingston, Milford, and Norwood locations already being converted to Big Y stores, while the locations in Norwell, Quincy, Peabody, and Saugus will become Big Y stores this week.]

The Butcherie in Brookline Temporarily Closed After Two-Alarm Fire

A kosher grocery store that has been in business for decades is closed for the time being after being hit by a fire.

The Boston Globe is reporting that The Butcherie in Brookline suffered upwards of half a million dollars in damage from a two-alarm blaze Tuesday afternoon that started in a storage area out back and quickly spread. The article says that the Harvard Street shop has extensive smoke damage and that it won't be able to reopen until health inspectors give the green light to the place.

The Butcherie, which first opened back in 1972, is one of the few family-owner kosher supermarkets in the Greater Boston area.
