Masala Art in Needham Is Closing

A longtime Indian restaurant in the western suburbs will be saying farewell to its space.

According to several sources, including a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Masala Art in Needham is going to be closing, with a Needham Observer article saying that the Newton-based Village Bank will be taking over its lease and opening a branch of its bank while also including a pop-up retail shop. The exact closing date for the restaurant has not been given as of yet, and it is not known whether it could be reopening elsewhere; as soon as we find out more, we will post an update here.

Masala Art first opened in 2003, being an upscale dining spot that is known in part for its lunchtime buffet.

Kostas Pizza & Seafood in Needham Has Closed

A longtime eatery in the western suburbs of Boston that featured pizza along with Greek and Italian fare has shut down.

According to a Bluesky post from @jeremyk.bsky.social, Kostas Pizza & Seafood in Needham is no longer in business, apparently closing its doors at the end of last week. The Chestnut Street dining spot had been in operation for approximately 30 years, offering such items as Greek salads, pizza, calzones, calamari, scallops, shrimp, gyros, Italian subs, chicken parmigiana, baked haddock, ziti and meatballs, eggplant Greek wraps, steak bombs, and more.

The address for the now-closed Kostas Pizza & Seafood was 315 Chestnut Street, Needham, MA, 02492.

Noodle & Doodles Ramen Is Opening in Needham

A new Asian restaurant will soon be opening in the western suburbs of Boston.

According to a Bluesky post from @jeremyk.bsky.social‬, Noodle & Doodles Ramen is coming soon to Needham, opening on Great Plain Avenue in the center of town. An article from the Needham Observer mentioned the plans approximately a year ago, saying at the time that Ray Zheng of Wen's Yunnan Noodles & Ramen in Boston was behind the spot and would "bring a more American ramen fusion with the traditional Japanese style."

Monsoon Indian Kitchen Opens in Needham

A brand new Indian restaurant has come to the western suburbs of Boston.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Monsoon Indian Kitchen is now open in Needham, moving into the former Home Kitchen space on Chestnut Street. The new eatery, which focuses on takeout, offers such items as samosas, lentil soup, naan, paratha, goat biryani, butter chicken, saag paneer, lamb vindaloo, salmon curry, shrimp tandoori, and more.

Conrad's Is Opening in Needham

A local group of restaurants known in part for their steak tips will soon be opening a new location.

According to a source, Conrad's is going to be opening in Needham, moving into the space on Highland Avenue that had been home to a locations of Bertucci's. We have been told that the new outlet hopes to open later this year, which seems to jibe with an earlier Needham Observer article that said the plan was to open sometime this fall. Once the Needham location of Conrad's opens, it will join others in Norwood, Walpole, and Foxboro (another had been in Sudbury as well, but it closed in 2022).

Just Salad Opens in Needham

A New York-based salad chain has expanded to a second location in the Greater Boston area.

According to a press release, Just Salad has soft-opened in Needham, moving into a space on Highland Avenue just west of the Route 128/95 intersection. The new outlet--which will have a grand opening celebration this week--joins another on Franklin Street in Boston's Financial District which opened last fall, with the new spot offering such options as salads, warm bowls, salad wraps, soups, smoothies, and more, and it includes both indoor and outdoor seating.

The James Pub & Provisions in Needham Is Opening a Second Location in Essex

A casual upscale pub in the western suburbs of Boston will soon be joined by another location, with this one being on the North Shore.

According to its website, The James Pub & Provisions in Needham is planning to open a second outlet in Essex this spring, with the address indicating that it will be moving into the space on Main Street that had been home to the Village Restaurant for nearly 70 years until closing down last September. Based on the Needham location (which is located on Great Plain Avenue), expect the new one in Essex to feature modern takes on comfort food, including dishes with Irish influences.

The James first opened in Needham in 2018, taking over the space where The Center Cafe had once been.

The Common Room Grill Is Replacing Latina Kitchen & Bar In Needham

A suburban spot that focuses on Mediterranean and South American fare is closing its doors, though a new restaurant will be move in.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Latina Kitchen & Bar is shutting down after business hours on December 17 with an earlier post mentioning that a sports bar is moving into the space. Latina Kitchen & Bar first opened in the summer of 2019, taking over the space that had previously been home to L&K Lounge and Kitchen (and that place had originally been known as RFK Kitchen).

Another poster within the Facebook group page mentions that The Common Room is opening within the Latina Kitchen & Bar space in early 2024, with a Needham Observer article mentioning that it will feature "high-quality comfort food while also possibly including some of the offerings from Latina Kitchen & Bar, as the hope is that the Latina chef stays on at the new place.

Pancho's Taqueria in Needham Has Closed

A pair of suburban Mexican restaurants is now back down to just one, as the newer location has shut down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Pancho's Taqueria in Needham is no longer in business, with a Facebook post from the place (which was posted on the Needham Restaurants page) saying "Today Pancho's in Needham closes its doors. We had great memories in the town of Needham. For our regulars please visit us at the Dedham location. Thank you all for your support all these years." The Needham outlet of Pancho's first opened in the fall of 2019, joining its Dedham location which had debuted three years earlier.

Mighty Subs in Needham Is Closing

A sub shop in the western suburbs of Boston that has been around for more than 30 years is shutting down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Mighty Subs in Needham is closing after business hours on July 28, with a picture of a note out front at the Highland Avenue spot indicating that the sub shop is "retiring." Mighty Subs, which first opened in 1990, has been known in part for their extra large subs while also offering such items as breakfast sandwiches, wings, meatball plates, chicken fingers, cheese sticks, fries, onions, and Greek salads.

Brothers Pizza & Restaurant in Needham Has Closed

A pizzeria and sub shop in the western suburbs of Boston has shut down after more than 25 years in business.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Brothers Pizza & Restaurant in Needham is no longer in operation, as it closed its doors late last week. The dining spot first got its start in 1997, offering Greek pizza, calzones, subs, pasta dishes, and grill items, with a few Greek dishes such as spinach pie, gyros, and grilled chicken on the menu.

Bertucci's in Peabody Has Closed

Less than a week after we reported that another location of a local chain of Italian restaurants had closed, it has now been learned that yet another outlet has shuttered as well.

According to multiple sources (including Clayton Daher, who first told us), Bertucci's in Peabody is no longer in business, with a check within the locations section of the chain's website seeming to confirm this. On Friday, it was reported that the Needham location of the chain had closed as well, and both the Peabody and Needham restaurants have joined a number of other outlets of the Northborough-based chain that have closed over the past several years, including at Alewife in Cambridge, Kenmore Square in Boston, and Faneuil Hall, as well as Andover, Beverly, Brockton, Canton, Marlborough, North Attleboro, and Woburn--and as stated earlier, the business also filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy toward the end of 2022.

Bertucci's in Needham Has Closed

It looks like yet another location of a local chain of Italian restaurants has shut down.

According to a source, Bertucci's in Needham is no longer in business, with a check within the locations section of the chain's website confirming this, as the page for the Highland Avenue restaurant has been removed. A number of outlets of the Northborough-based chain have closed over the past several years, including at Alewife in Cambridge, Kenmore Square in Boston, and Faneuil Hall, as well as Andover, Beverly, Brockton, Canton, Marlborough, North Attleboro, and Woburn--and the business also filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy late last year.

Chef Mike's in Needham Is Rebranding, Focusing on Catering; Future of Restaurant Unknown

An Italian restaurant in the western suburbs of Boston is gone--at least for now--as the business is undergoing a rebranding.

A Facebook post from owner Mike Fucci indicates that with his current focus being on catering due to Covid (which Fucci says "decimated" his business), he will rebrand Chef Mike's, saying that "the name...is going to disappear" and that "we don't know what's happening with the restaurant; I may reopen the restaurant at some point but right now as it stands, catering seems like the smartest thing for me." Chef Mike's--which is currently called Chef Mike's Catering--first opened in August of 2019 on Highland Avenue, approximately a half year before the pandemic took hold.

Little Spoon Is Opening in Needham Center

The people behind a Thai restaurant in Newton will be opening another dining spot in a neighboring community.

According to an article in the Needham Times and Wicked Local, Little Spoon is planning to open in Needham Center, moving into a space on Great Plain Avenue that had been home to a UPS store. The post mentions that the owners of Four Spoons in Newton Centre are behind the upcoming spot, which will offer the same traditional Thai fare offered at Four Spoons while also including more noodle dishes as well. (Beer and wine will also be available.)

Home Kitchen Opens in Needham

A brand new Indian has come to the western suburbs of Boston.

According to a source, Home Kitchen is now open in Needham, moving into a space on Chestnut Street a bit south of the center of town. A check on its menu indicates that the new eatery offers a variety of Indian dishes for takeout and delivery, and that it is currently open for Diwali (the Indian festival of lights) and has a special Diwali menu up.

In addition to takeout and delivery, Home Kitchen also offers catering as well.

Stacy's Juicebar in Needham Is Closing

A suburban juice shop that is run by the person behind a popular pita chip company is going to be shutting down.

According to an article from the Newton-Needham Regional Chamber, Stacy's Juicebar in Needham plans to close permanently on November 25, with owner Stacy Madison saying in an Instagram post that "We do not know what 2021 will bring, however the timing is right for us to sadly end this chapter of the Juicebar." Madison, who opened the Highland Avenue shop seven years ago, was also co-founder of Stacy's Pita Chips, a local business that exploded in popularity between 2000 and 2005 and was eventually acquired by Pepsi Co.

In addition to juices, Stacy's Juicebar also offers such items as soups, salads, sandwiches, smoothie bowls, baked goods, and more.

Three Squares Craft Kitchen & Cocktails in Needham Has Closed

A casual upscale suburban restaurant known for its comfort food and mixed drinks has shut down permanently.

According to multiple sources, Three Squares Craft Kitchen & Cocktails in Needham is no longer in operation, with a Facebook post from the Highland Avenue spot confirming that it has indeed closed for good. Three Squares, which had been open until recently during the pandemic (and featured live music on its outdoor patio) first opened in the summer of 2013, offering such items as clam chowder, fried pickles, burgers, fish and chips, steak tips, blackened salmon, seafood fra diavolo, and more, as well as an array of beer, wine, and cocktails.

Needham Sets Up Outdoor Areas for Diners Doing Takeout from Restaurants

As the city of Boston and other communities across the region look into ways to help restaurants during the COVID-19 pandemic, a suburb west of the city has come up with an interesting idea that was put into place late last week.

According to a source and a Patch article, the town of Needham has set up picnic tables on the common in the center of town, the common in Needham Heights, and the Eaton Square pedestrian plaza between Needham Bank and the commuter rail tracks, all of which can be used by customers for both takeout food and drinks (including alcoholic beverages). The town put this in place because restaurants in Massachusetts continue to be under restrictions in which they are only allowed to do takeout and/or delivery and their outdoor dining areas are off-limits along with their indoor spaces; in the article, Select Board member Marianne Cooley explains that "We want to do what we can as a Town to make sure our restaurants emerge from this pandemic stronger than before and give our residents the opportunity to enjoy these establishments while staying healthy and safe. This is just one step we can take to help; we'll continue to work with restaurants and the business community to find additional ways to help and support them as our economy begins to reopen."

Currently, restaurants in Massachusetts will be allowed to reopen with restrictions in the Phase 2 part of the plan announced by Governor Baker last week, with Phase 2 possibly beginning as early as two weeks from today. (Bars are part of Phase 3, so they won't be able to reopen for five weeks at the very earliest, as each phase lasts for at least three weeks.)

Belmont, Essex, Needham, and Lawrence Require Restaurant Workers and Customers to Wear Protective Face Coverings

At least four more communities in the Greater Boston area have put stricter rules in place that will affect both restaurant workers and customers.

According to a source as well as a list from WBZ 1030, people are now required to wear masks or another form of protective face covering in Belmont, Essex, Needham, and Lawrence, with the Lawrence ruling also including outdoor spaces in certain cases, according to a post from WHDH 7News. The four communities join an increasingly-long list of others in the region, including Abington, Beverly, Braintree, Brookline, Cambridge, Danvers, Everett, Framingham, Lynn, Marblehead, Medford, Melrose, Peabody, Quincy, Revere, Salem, Somerville, Swampscott, and Whitman, though as of this writing, no such requirement has been set in place for the city of Boston.

Massachusetts restaurants and bars continue to be under a shutdown of sorts where they are only allowed to offer takeout and/or delivery due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, with the end date being extended from May 4 to May 18 a couple of days ago.
