Marzae Cellar + Provisions Opens at Boston Public Market

Earlier this year, it was reported that the people the first and only natural winery in Massachusetts would be bringing a tasting room to downtown Boston, and now we have learned that it is up and running. 

According to a press release, Marzae Cellar + Provisions has soft-opened at Boston Public Market, with the place having nearly 100 seats including full-service dining tables, lounge areas, and bar seating and offering natural wines, aperitifs, and seasonal dishes with locally-sourced ingredients, including both small and large plates. (A retail section is also within the space, selling such options as chocolates, cheeses, charcuterie, vinegars, hot sauces, bitters, and shrubs.)

Husband-and-wife team Eliot Martin and Kate Lucai are behind Marzae, which started out in Acton in 2023.

Marzae Cellar + Provisions Plans to Open at Boston Public Market

The people behind a suburban winery that is the only natural winery in Massachusetts will be bringing a tasting room to downtown Boston. 

According to multiple sources, Marzae Cellar + Provisions is going to be opening at Boston Public Market, with an Instagram post from BPM saying that it "will bring a vibrant new tasting room to the Market—featuring natural wines, aperitifs, non-alcoholic beverages, and seasonal food rooted in New England's agricultural traditions" while the Instagram page for the Acton-based Marzae mentions that "Whether you're stopping by for a casual glass of wine after work or joining us for an intimate, chef-driven dinner at the 'Kitchen Counter,' we look forward to welcoming you into the Marzae family at our new space." Marzae also says that the new concept will have farm-to-table bites and seasonal tasting menus, a shop with New England provisions, sustainable wine on draft, and non-alcoholic options. If all goes as planned, Marzae Cellar + Provisions will open sometime this spring.

Tree House Brewing Company May Be Opening a Brewery, Distillery, and Tasting Room at the Prudential Center in Boston

A couple of months ago, it was reported that one of the best-known breweries in New England had opened a retail shop in Boston, and now we have learned that this may have just been the opening act of what appears to be some big plans.

According to a licensing board hearing page within the city's website, Tree House Brewing Company is seeking licenses to operate a brewery, tasting room, and distillery at the Prudential Center in the Back Bay, with the 35,000-square-foot space including a brewing area, brewhouse, distilled spirits plant, consumption areas, and a retails sales section on the first floor and consumption areas with seating for approximately 121 people on the second floor, and the plans include a patio as well. This proposal comes on the heels of Tree House opening a retail shop at the Pru back in September, and the company has also had a pop-up beer garden in the South Garden.

Chattermark Distillers in Charlestown Opens Tasting Room

A distillery in Charlestown that was first announced in the spring of 2021 has debuted its tasting room/cocktail bar.

According to a post within the bostonchef.com site, Chattermark Distillers on Terminal Street soft-opened its brand new tasting room on Friday, November 11, with rye, gin, and bourbon offered. The post mentions that an outdoor patio will be set up during the warmer months, and while food is not available at the facility, patrons are welcome to bring in their own or order via delivery from nearby spots.

The tasting room at Chattermark Distillers is currently open on Fridays from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM and Saturdays from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with hours expanding once it is fully open.

Chattermark Distillers Plans to Open in Charlestown; Tasting Room in the Works

A brand new distillery is in the process of opening in a hidden corner of Boston, and the plan is to open a tasting room as well.

According to a licensing board hearing page within the city's website, Chattermark Distillers is looking to set up a tasting room in Charlestown, with the business being below the Tobin Bridge on the small peninsula formed by Little Mystic Channel and the Mystic River. A check on its website and social media pages indicates that the distillery is currently offering two types of rye and a gin for curbside pickup, while also saying that they are "Boston's only rye and bourbon distiller" (it looks like a bourbon, an American whiskey, and another rye are in the process of being aged right now).

Chattermark Distillers mentions on their website that they are a veteran-owned business, with John Sorgini being the founder and CEO and Kyle LeClerc being the head distiller.

Debevino Winery in Walpole Reopens for Tastings on April 17

A suburban winery that debuted shortly before the coronavirus outbreak forced it to spend much of the past year in a partial hibernation is getting ready to open its patio for tastings and more.

According to a press release, Debevino Winery in Walpole is planning to reopen for outdoor tastings on Saturday, April 17, with live music included along with wine and wine slushies--and charcuterie and snacks via Antonia's Italian Cuisine. The release mentions that a tent will also be set up next month that will allow for additional shaded seating and that it will be available for private events and parties.

For now, hours for the patio at Debevino Winery will be Saturdays from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM and Sundays from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

Rue de Saveur to Open in Brookline's Coolidge Corner

A gourmet market and tasting room with roots overseas is on its way to Brookline.

According to an article in Wicked Local, Rue de Saveur is opening in Coolidge Corner, taking over the space on Harvard Street that had been home to a location of Kabloom. The post says that the shop is the first franchised store in Massachusetts from vomFASS (a global retailer based in Germany), with the market planning to offer such items as oils, vinegars and "specialty whiskies." If all goes well, Rue de Saveur could be opening in early August.

Debevino Winery Is Opening in Walpole

A brand new winery is coming to the southwest suburbs of Boston, and it will include a tasting room and more.

According to a message sent from The Passionate Foodie, Debevino Winery is opening on Route 1 in Walpole, with a press release saying that the place is slated to officially open tomorrow (Friday, January 10). The release mentions that the space will include a wine production facility, a tasting area where people can sample the wines and go on an informational tour, and a space for private events.

Debevino Winery was actually established in 1975, with the name coming from a composite of three family names--DeNapoli, Bevilacqua, and Arpino (the last names of the owners and winemakers).

East Regiment Beer Company Opens in Salem

Nearly two years after it was first mentioned here (and after five years of planning), a new brewery has opened on the North Shore.

According to its website and social media pages, East Regiment Beer Company is now open in Salem, with the Church Street spot including a taproom and outdoor area, while food delivery is allowed and leashed dogs are welcome on the patio. The brewery itself is set up in the basement of the building and nine beers are currently offered, including a couple of brown ales, a saison, an American wheat, a few IPAs, and more.

Currently, East Regiment Beer Company is open Wednesday through Sunday, with hours being 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM Wednesday and Thursday, 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM Friday and Saturday, and 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Sunday.

East Regiment Brewing Company Planning to Open Brewery and Tasting Room in Salem

Yet another new microbrewery may be on its way to the Greater Boston area, with this one looking to open on the North Shore.

According to a couple of sources, East Regiment Brewing Company is planning to open in Salem, with a Facebook post from the Salem Digest confirming this, showing that the brewery hopes to open on Church Street in the downtown section of the city. The post says that the business would include a tasting room with outdoor seating, while the brewery itself would be in the basement of the building which also includes Nick's Firehouse Coffee Shop. The note says that all existing businesses in the building (including Nick's) would remain open.

Currently, Salem is home to two breweries--Notch and Salem Beer Works--as well as a cider company called Far From The Tree.

Taste Wine Bar and Cafe, Common Vines Wine Shop to Open in Downtown Boston

An "urban tasting room" is a couple of months away from debuting in downtown Boston--and the people behind it will be opening a wine shop as well.

According to a job post within the bostonchefs.com site, Taste Wine Bar & Cafe is planning to open on Summer Street in June, with the place offering wine by the glass, bottle or wine flights, wine-based cocktails, craft beer, cheese and charcuterie, and some other small snacks. The listing mentions that classes and tastings will be offered as well, and an earlier post from the Boston Hospitality and Tourism Industry Blog indicates they will have a connection to the upcoming Common Vines wine shop across the street.

The address for this soon-to-open spot in downtown Boston is Taste Wine Bar & Cafe, 101 Summer Street, Boston, MA, 02110 while the address for Common Vines wine shop is 100 Summer Street.

[June 27 update: Eater Boston states that Common Vines is now open, while Taste Wine Bar and Cafe will open sometime this summer.]

Bully Boy Distillers in Roxbury Getting Ready to Open a Tasting Room/Craft Cocktail Bar

A local distillery will soon have a space where people can enjoy some cocktails.

According to a licensing board page within the City of Boston website, Bully Boy Distillers has applied for a license to operate a tasting room within its new facility on Cedric Street in Roxbury, with the space being just over 350 square feet in size. An earlier Boston Magazine article had mentioned that the tasting room would be a "still-to-glass" craft cocktail bar located in Bully Boy's new 8,000-square foot home, which is across the street from its original space. It is not yet known when the tasting room might open, but more should be learned around the time of the hearing on February 1.

Bully Boy Distillers features handcrafted whiskey, rum, and vodka, along with gin, punch, and a bottled version of the Old Fashioned cocktail.

Down the Road Beer Co. to Open Taproom in Everett

A contract brewery is taking over a facility just north of Boston, and the space will include a tasting room.

Boston Magazine is reporting that Down the Road Beer Co. is moving into a space in Everett, with the 12,000-square foot facility including room for brewing and canning, along with a dedicated taproom and retail area. Last year, the company brewed out of the Ipswich Ale Brewery facility and then moved to BrewMaster's Tavern in Williamsburg (a short distance west of Northampton in the foothills of the Berkshires), and while Down the Road will indeed be brewing out of its upcoming Everett space, it will continue to do contract brewing as well, moving only a part of its production to the new building.

If all goes as planned, Down the Road could be opening its tasting room in the spring of 2017, according to Boston Magazine.

Jack's Abby in Framingham Opening Springdale Barrel Room in Adjacent Building

A brewery west of Boston that moved to a much larger space last year has just expanded even more--though it is not yet known what the specific plans are for the new space.

Boston Magazine is reporting (via a MetroWest Daily News article), that Jack's Abby in Framingham has signed a lease for a building that is connected to its present facility on Clinton Street, effectively doubling the total size of the business. The post says that the exact plans for the second building have not been disclosed, though it appears part of it could include a tasting room; it looks like more details on the building's use will come out later this month after a Framingham Planning Board meeting take place.

Jack's Abby's original home had been on Morton Street until last year when it made the move to Clinton Street, giving the company almost six times more space. (Exhibit A Brewing Company now resides in its old spot.)

[September 15 update: The Boston Globe confirms what a source told us earlier this week, that the new space Jack's Abby is taking over will include a 5,000-square-foot tap room along with space for its growing specialty barrel-aging program for wine and bourbon-aged beers. (The building will also be used for warehouse space.]

[October 14 update: Boston Magazine mentions (via MetroWest Daily News) that the new space will be called Springdale Barrel Room, with Jack's Abby cofounder Jack Hendler saying "It's going to be like a different brewery." (The building will have a totally separate business model from Jack's Abby and it will have its own staff.) If all goes as planned, Springdale Barrel Room will open this winter.]

[December 14 update: According to a Facebook post from Jack's Abby, Springdale Barrel Room debuts tomorrow (Thursday. December 15) at 4:00 PM, with "sours, games, ales, good times."]

Barrel House Z Brewery to Open in Weymouth

A small-batch brewery is on its way to the South Shore, and the person behind it is very well-known within the local beer scene.

According to a Twitter post from Boston Herald writer @DGoodison, Barrel House Z Brewery (which will also be known as BHZ Brewing) is coming to Weymouth, with Russ Heissner--who was Harpoon's first brewer back in 1986--being the founder of the place. The new brewery, which will be located on Woodrock Road just off Route 53 near the Hingham line, will focus on barrel-aged beer, partnering with Harpoon (which will supply it with wort) and Boston-based Bully Boy Distillers (which will provide it with barrels).

If all goes as planned, Barrel House Z should be opening in the second quarter of 2016, with brewery tours and a tasting room following in the middle and latter part of the year, respectively.

A First Look at Short Path Distillery in Everett [Photos]

A brand new distillery has just opened in Everett, and we had the chance to look at the place over the weekend.

As reported earlier, Short Path Distillery opened its doors in Everett on Saturday, June 27, with the Kelvin Street spot featuring gin and rum that are made by "combining old-world distilling techniques with a new-world, chemistry-based approach to spirit development." The distillery is located in an old rubber factory just west of Main Street and just north of the Revere Beach Parkway, with one room including a bar area for tasting along with a few tables, and the other room being the manufacturing area where the spirits are made. We took a tour over the weekend and participated in some tastings, and also got to see the equipment used and how the gin and rum are made. A few pictures of the place can be seen below. Avery Provision Co. in Boston Is Becoming The Tasting Room at Sip

A gourmet food shop in downtown Boston is being reconcepted into a tasting room that is under the same ownership.

Eater Boston is reporting that Avery Provision Co. on Washington Street is changing over to The Tasting Room at Sip, a spot that has seating for 48 (including both communal tables and traditional seating) and will include classes, pop-up events, and various functions such as office events. The space debuts on April 5 with an Easter pop-up brunch from Bread & Salt Hospitality.

Both Avery Provision Co. and Sip (a wine bar) opened in July of 2012, moving into the former Bina Osteria and Bina Alimentari spaces.
