Third Rail to Open in Former Roslindale Substation

In late 2012, we reported that a well-known Boston chef and restaurateur was planning to open a restaurant within an historic structure. Now we have learned a bit more about the spot.

Universal Hub confirms that Chris Douglass of the Ashmont Grill and Tavolo in Dorchester will be opening a dining spot in the former trolley substation at the southern edge of Roslindale Square, with the restaurant being called Third Rail. Construction has now begun on the space, and if all goes as planned, the dining spot could be open by the spring of 2016, according to UH.

The old substation building, which was built in 1911, is being turned into a mixed-use complex, with a location of Craft Beer Cellar also moving into the structure along with some residential units. A cafe and market had also been planned for the development, though it is not known if these are still in the works.
