Kowloon Restaurant in Saugus Is Adding Outdoor Dining

by Marc Hurwitz

It looks like a Route 1 landmark that has been around for nearly 70 years will soon have a new feature--outdoor seating.

According to an article in the Saugus Advertiser, Kowloon Restaurant has gotten approval by the Saugus Board of Selectmen to add an outdoor dining area in a tent behind the place, and it now needs approval from the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission (ABCC). If approved, the 30-by-60 foot outdoor area would have seating for 106 and would be open from May through Columbus Day (except during bad weather), and it would have shorter hours than the restaurant, closing at 11:00 PM each night. As of now, it appears that the tent could debut in mid-July pending ABCC approval.

Kowloon, which first opened in 1950, is considered to be one of the top-grossing independent restaurants in New England, with a post from restaurantbusinessonline.com stating that it was number 85 in the entire country in 2014.

The address for Kowloon is 948 Broadway (Route 1), Saugus, MA, 01906. Its website can be found at https://www.kowloonrestaurant.com/

[July 27 update: A Facebook post from the place indicates that Kowloon's "Tiki Tent" debuts this evening and that it will be open from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM Wednesday through Sunday.]
