This summer, we reported that plans were in the works to renovate the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center. Now, it appears that a chain of grocery stores that recently opened its first location in Massachusetts will be opening nearby within an upcoming mixed-use development that might include specialty retailers, restaurants, residential property, offices, and a fitness club.
According to the Newton Patch, Rochester-based Wegmans Food Markets is planning to open a store in Chestnut Hill Square, which will be on the south side of Route 9, across from the Mall at Chestnut Hill and just east of the Atrium. (The Chestnut Hill Shopping Center is on the north side of Route 9, on the other side of the Hammond Pond Parkway from all three of these complexes.) The article mentions that the new grocery store won't be as big as some of the others, with the market being about 70,000 square feet in size (about half the size of their Northborough location, which opened in October of this year). A press release posted by the Patch indicates that the upcoming Wegmans in Newton will be "a new, smaller urban concept" with a market cafe included within the store.
There is currently no specific opening date for the new Wegmans in Chestnut Hill, according to the article.
[February 11, 2014 update: The Watertown Patch is reporting that the new Wegmans in Chestnut Hill will have its grand opening on Sunday, April 27, though its wine, beer, and spirits section will actually open earlier, on Saturday, March 29.]
Wegmans started out as a fruit and vegetable company in Rochester during World War I, eventually expanding to include grocery stores in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. In addition to their Northborough location in Massachusetts, Wegmans is planning to open a store in Burlington, and a stalled Westwood store may be opening at some point in the future as well.
