World of Beer Is Looking to Come to Somerville's Davis Square

A Florida-based chain of beer bars is eyeing one of the busiest parts of Somerville as part of its ongoing expansion, but it appears that there might be resistance among some locals.

A post within the Davis Square Live Journal blog indicates that World of Beer is hoping to open a bar in the Social Security building space, which is located at 240 Elm Street in the square. An email that is apparently from a Somerville alderman shows concern for the plans, with the alderman saying that "I don't want to see a drinking hole in Davis that allows you to bring in your own food and barely serves any food of their own." In response to her meetings with proponents of the bar, it looks like World of Beer may be planning to "partner with a restaurant to come into the space to share adjoining spaces." A community meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 17 to try to sort this all out.

World of Beer, which is headquartered in Tampa, has nearly 40 locations throughout the country, with a number more being planned. The bars offer beers from around the world, with hundreds of bottled beers typically available as well as a number of beers on tap. Their website can be found at http://wobusa.com/

Thanks to Universal Hub for bringing this to our attention.
