The only Boston-area location of a Florida-based chain of beer bars has shut down.

According to a source, World of Beer at CambridgeSide in East Cambridge is no longer in business, with a Facebook post from the business saying the following:

Dear friends, We have made the very difficult decision to close this location due to the ongoing impact of the pandemic. The Ginger Man Space in Downtown Boston Is for Lease

A restaurant in downtown Boston that has been known in part for its comfort food and craft beer may be closed permanently, as its space is now on the market.

According to a tweet and photo from @ConciergeBoston, The Ginger Man space on State Street in the Financial District is for lease, confirming what we heard from a couple of sources over the past several weeks who said the dining and drinking spot might be shuttered for good. A check on the place indicates that their Instagram page is down while their website says "temporarily closed," and their Facebook and Twitter pages have not been updated since 2020 and 2019, respectively.

The Boston location of The Ginger Man first opened in 2016, joining its original location in New York City that now appears to be closed as well. Both locations offered soups, salads, sandwiches, appetizers and snacks, and sausage platters along with an extensive list of beers, while wine, spirits, and cocktails were served as well.

The address for The Ginger Man in downtown Boston was 148 State Street, Boston, MA, 02109.

News Elsewhere: Armsby Abbey in Worcester Is Reopening in April

A Worcester gastropub that is often mentioned as one of the best beer bars in New England has been closed for indoor dining for an entire year now, and while it had hoped to reopen around Labor Day last year, it never did, leading to speculation about its exact future. Now we have learned that it will indeed be opening its doors once again.

According to a tweet from the place (which we were notified about via a Twitter post from @riptor), Armsby Abbey in Worcester is planning to open back up in April, with the Main Street spot saying the following:

Today marks one year since we last welcomed you inside Armsby Abbey. ONE YEAR! The wait is almost over... we will be re-opening our doors in April! Stay tuned for details in the coming weeks. We have missed everyone dearly and can't wait to serve you all again!

Armsby Abbey closed its doors to the public last March as the pandemic took hold, but it remained open for takeout until closing down completely for the summer with the hope being that it could reopen for "an epic Labor Day celebration." It ended up not opening back up and has been shuttered ever since.

The address for Armsby Abbey is 144 Main Street, Worcester, MA, 01608. Its website can be found at https://armsbyabbey.com/

City Works Eatery and Pour House Is Now Open at Arsenal Yards in Watertown

A small group of dining and drinking spots that was supposed to open its first Boston-area location just as the coronavirus outbreak hit is now open for business.

According to a source, City Works Eatery & Pour House has officially opened at Arsenal Yards in East Watertown, with an earlier Patch article confirming this. The new place offers classic American fare and pub grub along with a wide variety of craft beer options, with an earlier article here saying that the group of eateries claims to be the "best beer bars" in the United States.

The Watertown location of City Works Eatery & Pour House had been in the works since early 2018, and the plan was for it to have its grand opening in mid-March of this year, right around when Governor Charlie Baker ordered restaurants in Massachusetts to close down their dining areas due to the pandemic.

News Elsewhere: Armsby Abbey in Worcester to Close Down for the Summer

A Worcester gastropub that is considered by some to be one of the best beer bars in New England is shutting its doors for the summer due to the COVD-19 pandemic.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Armsby Abbey on Main Street is closing for the time being, with a Facebook post from the place saying the following:

It is with grateful hearts we announce Armsby Abbey will be closing temporarily for the Summer on Sunday, June 21st at 4pm. We've done everything right. We built an iconic restaurant from scratch. We are recognized around the world for our beer selection. We had 12+ years of proven growth. Enter Covid....We laid off 30 of our employees. And while we were able to maintain 40-45% of our pre-pandemic sales until Memorial Day, we have since been operating at 20-25%. Now that the state re-opened outdoor dining, which Armsby Abbey can’t facilitate due to its location, and school is out for the Summer, our sales have dropped below 10% of our pre-pandemic sales....Please know this Summer closing is indeed temporary and by no means permanent....See you September 1st for an epic Labor Day celebration!

Armsby Abbey is known in part for its extensive selection of beers, including being the only place in Massachusetts to offer Hill Farmstead beers on a regular basis; it also offers a variety of comfort food dishes as well.

Union Brewhouse in Weymouth Is Reopening

A few months ago, a popular beer bar that had been around for more than 20 years abruptly closed, and it ultimately appeared that it would not be returning. Now we have learned that it will indeed be opening back up again.

According to a source, Union Brewhouse in Weymouth is planning to reopen, with a Facebook post from the Washington Street spot showing a picture of the place with an "opening soon" sign out front, while the post itself says, "Brewhouse will be re-opening soon! Stay tuned!" Union Brewhouse closed out of the blue in mid-June, though a few days later its Facebook page indicated that the closure was due to "a perfect storm of equipment failure" and that it planned to eventually be up and running again. In July, however, its future appeared to be in doubt, as a "For Sale" sign was posted out front.

Union Brewhouse first opened its doors in 1996, offering an array of craft beers along with comfort food and pub grub.

The address for Union Brewhouse is 550 Washington Street (Route 53), Weymouth, MA, 02188.

[October 9 update: According to a source, Union Brewhouse may be reopening as early as today, while a poster on the Facebook page for the place mentions that it could be reopening tomorrow; we will try to find out exactly when it will be opening back up, so stay tuned for another update soon.]

The Fat Cat in Quincy Is Moving to a New Location

A favorite spot for comfort food and beer has shut down for the time being, as it is leaving its home for a new space nearby.

According to a Facebook post from the place, The Fat Cat in Quincy shuttered last night and is now getting ready to move from its former home at 24 Chestnut Street to a new space at 1495 Hancock Street, which is where Iron Furnace had been until closing a couple of years ago. The note says that the restaurant hopes to reopen in mid-August and that it will "have all sorts of new tricks, drinks and menu items coming your way."

The Fat Cat has been featured by our sister site (Boston's Hidden Restaurants) as an under-the-radar gastropub-type place with such dishes as fried pickles, macaroni and cheese, and burgers. The review can be found at the link below:

The Kenmore Is Replacing The Lower Depths in Boston's Kenmore Square

[Ed note: This article was updated to reflect the fact that a new spot is on its way to the space.]

A pub and beer bar that is popular with both Red Sox fans and college students has shut down.

According to a source, The Lower Depths in the Kenmore Square section of Boston closes at the end of business hours tonight, with a Facebook post from the Commonwealth Avenue spot saying "And that's a wrap. We're moving on to some new adventures as of July 1st. Cheers to 15 amazing years and all of our awesome regulars!" It is not yet known what might happen to the space, so stay tuned for updates as they come in.

The Lower Depths has been known as a place to go for hot dogs, tater tots, and tacos, along with an extensive list of regional, national, and international beers.

The address for The Lower Depths is 476 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA, 02215.

[July 2 update: The Boston Business Journal is reporting that The Lower Depths could be reopening under new ownership, as Douglas Bacon and his Red Paint Hospitality Group plan to open it back up at some point. A licensing board hearing page seems to confirm this, showing that the business is looking to have a change of ownership from Gordon Wilcox (the current owner of The Lower Depths) to Bacon and Dot Boy Inc. Bacon is behind such spots as The Westland, the White Horse Tavern, the Avenue, the Corner Tavern, The Last Drop, Harry's Bar and Grill, and Hopewell Kitchen.]

[July 2 update #2: An update from the above BBJ article indicates that The Lower Depths will not be coming back after all, as Douglas Bacon plans to have renovations done and reopen with a new name, new menu, and new look. If all goes as planned, the new spot could be opening in approximately 60 days.]

[September 4 update: According to a licensing board hearing page within the city's website, it appears that the new restaurant and bar opening in the former Lower Depth's space will be called The Kenmore.]

[October 22 update: Eater Boston states that The Kenmore is now open, and it features hamburgers and hot dogs along with salads, wings, fries, Brussels sprouts, grain bowls, chili, cheesesteak eggrolls, onion dip, and beer and wine--though no liquor is available.]

City Works Eatery and Pour House to Open at Arsenal Yards in Watertown

by Marc Hurwitz

A small group of dining and drinking spots that claim to be the "best beer bar restaurants" in the United States will expand to the Boston area.

The Boston Globe is reporting that City Works Eatery & Pour House is planning to open at Arsenal Yards, a new development that is replacing the old Arsenal Mall in Watertown. The article says that the restaurant and bar will move into one of the existing spaces at the site rather than the Arsenal Mall space itself, which is being torn down. Once it opens, expect to see classic American fare along with a variety of craft beer options at City Works Eatery & Pour House, whose parent company is Chicago-based Bottleneck Management and currently has a handful of locations in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Minnesota, Florida, and Texas.

Arsenal Yards is expected to be complete in the spring of 2019, so City Works Eatery & Pour House could be opening around that time.

Sunset Grill & Tap in Allston Has Closed

by Marc Hurwitz

A renowned beer bar that was also known in part for its nachos has closed down.

According to a tweet from @FullHouseTicket, the Sunset Grill & Tap in Allston is shuttered, with Eater Boston confirming this, showing a picture of a sign out front saying that the Brighton Avenue "has closed for business" and referring customers to the Sunset Cantina on Commonwealth Avenue. (Sunset Grill & Tap's upstairs pool hall Patron's has also closed.) No reason has been given for its closure as of yet, so keep checking back for more details as they come in.

The parent company of Sunset Grill & Tap and Sunset Cantina filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection several months ago, with the filing resulting from worries that the Department of Revenue might seize the dining and drinking spots because of $500,000 in unpaid taxes.

Sunset Grill & Tap first opened its doors in 1988.

The address for the now-closed Sunset Grill & Tap is 130 Brighton Avenue, Allston, MA, 02134.

Brewer's Tap & Table Is Opening in Former Watch City Brewing Space in Waltham

A couple of years ago, we reported that a brewpub and brewery in Waltham had shut down and that a local group of restaurants and brewpubs might open another location within the space. Now we have learned that this is no longer the case and that an eclectic restaurant and craft beer bar will be opening there instead.

According to an article from Eater Boston, Brewer's Tap & Table is opening on Moody Street in the former Watch City Brewing space, with the place promising to be a New American restaurant (with Asian, Latin American, and American Southern influences) and bar with a number of local beers available on tap and a variety of bourbon options as well. The post says that owners Matt and Nancy Sargent come from Vermont, where they hosted underground events called "Phantom Dinner" and also ran a Phantom food truck before opening Phantom Restaurant in Waitsfield (which is no longer in business).

Watch City Brewing closed its doors in June of 2014, with the space subsequently being looked at by Beer Works; it appeared that they were going to open at the site, but those plans fell through at some point.

The address for the upcoming Brewer's Tap & Table is 256 Moody Street, Waltham, MA, 02453. Its Twitter page can be found at https://twitter.com/BTT_Waltham

[September 6 update: Wicked Local states that Brewer's Tap & Table will have seating for 250, 48 taps of mostly local craft beer, and--pending approval from the city of Waltham--monthly live music possibly being in the works.]

[November 7 update: A Twitter post from the place indicates that Brewer's Tap & Table has soft-opened, with an earlier message sent from them saying that it is possible they could open for real sometime this week, though this is not a definite as of yet.]

[November 9 update: Eater Boston mentions that Brewer's Tap & Table officially opens today, though with a "small starting menu."]

World of Beer to Open in California Pizza Kitchen Space at CambridgeSide Galleria in East Cambridge

Last summer, we reported that a Florida-based chain of beer bars was making another run at coming to the Boston area, two years after initial plans for them to open in another location fell through. Now we have learned where exactly they will be opening this time around.

BostInno is reporting that World of Beer is looking to open at the CambridgeSide Galleria in East Cambridge, with Eater Boston stating that it will be coming to the space where a location of California Pizza Kitchen had been until recently closing. According to BostInno, the new dining and drinking spot will have 60 beers on tap and more than 500 other options available in bottles and cans, and that they will be offering "tavern fare" to go with the beer.

Back in 2013, the chain mentioned that they had plans to open in Somerville's Davis Square, but those plans never materialized and they announced in 2015 that they would be looking once again to open in the region, though at the time there was no word on where they might open.

Eater Boston says that the new World of Beer could be opening in Cambridge sometime this summer if all goes as planned.

[May 23 update: A Facebook post from the place indicates that World of Beer is "putting all the final touches" on its new location in Cambridge and is currently hiring for a variety of job positions. An earlier post had said that they were hoping to open in June, but no specific opening date has been given as of yet.]

[June 29 update: Eater Boston mentions that World of Beer plans to open in Cambridge on July 11.]

The Ginger Man Is Opening in Downtown Boston

After having its plans fall through twice for a Fort Point location, a tavern in New York is getting ready to open on the northern edge of the city's Financial District.

Eater Boston is reporting that The Ginger Man is hoping to open on State Street in January, taking over the space where a location of the Stadium Sports Bar & Grill had been. There had been talk as early as 2012 that the dining and drinking spot might be opening in Fort Point, first looking at a space on Farnsworth Street then looking at a space on Congress Street, though neighborhood resistance to one, if not both locations apparently caused those plans to fall apart.

[March 1, 2016 update: A new article from Eater Boston indicates that The Ginger Man is on the verge of opening, and that it will have approximately 90 draft lines and nearly 100 bottled beers.]

[March 17, 2016 update: Boston Magazine says that The Ginger Man is now open in downtown Boston, and that the place has .]

The Ginger Man is known in part for its farm-to-table comfort food along with its extensive array of beers on tap and in bottles. Currently, Ginger Man can be found in the Midtown East area of Manhattan, while other locations of Ginger Man in Connecticut and Texas are no longer connected to the New York (or Boston) location, according to Eater Boston.

The address for this new tavern in downtown Boston is 148 State Street, Boston, MA, 02109. The website for the restaurants is at http://thegingerman.com/

Waltham Beer Works Getting Closer to Opening in Former Watch City Space; Construction, Hiring Taking Place

A local group of restaurants and brewpubs is making progress on their latest location, which will be opening in the space where another brewpub/brewery had once been.

A Twitter post from late last month indicates that construction is in full force at the future site of Waltham Beer Works on Moody Street, with a job post on the Craigslist site mentioning "a new restaurant and bar" at 254 Moody Street--this is the address of the upcoming Beer Works as well as the old Watch City Brewing Co., which closed in June of 2014. The Craigslist post states that in addition to regional craft beers, the new spot will also offer "small distillery spirits and high quality menu items." It is not known exactly when Waltham Beer Works might be opening; as soon as we hear of an opening date, we will post an update here.

Other Beer Works are located near North Station, in the Fenway, at Logan Airport, and in Framingham, Hingham, Lowell, and Salem. Its website can be found at http://www.beerworks.net/

World of Beer Planning to Come to the Boston Area

Two years ago, we reported that a Florida-based chain of beer bars was eyeing a location in the Boston area, only to have the plans fall through a short time later. Now we have learned that the chain is making plans once again to come to the local area.

According to a press release from EIN Presswire, a lease agreement is currently in the works for World of Beer to open at an undisclosed location in the Greater Metropolitan Boston area, with Attitude Beer Holding Co, signing a commitment to build the place with joint venture partner New England World of Beer, LLC. The release says that more information on the drinking spot will be given once the definitive documentation and lease agreement are signed, with a location presumably given at that time. If all goes as planned, the new construction on the new World of Beer location could start in January of 2016, with the place possibly opening in the second quarter of that year.

In the summer of 2013, it looked like World of Beer was considering opening in the old social security building in Somerville's Davis Square, but those plans didn't work out and it appeared that Beer Works might move into the space instead, with those plans ultimately seeming to fall through as well. (The Elm Street structure was in the news earlier this week, as worries about the integrity of the building resulted in nearby roads temporarily being shut down.)

World of Beer, which is headquartered in Tampa, offer beers from around the world, with hundreds of bottled beers often available along with many beers on tap. Its website is at http://wobusa.com/
