Sunset Grill & Tap in Allston Has Closed

by Marc Hurwitz

A renowned beer bar that was also known in part for its nachos has closed down.

According to a tweet from @FullHouseTicket, the Sunset Grill & Tap in Allston is shuttered, with Eater Boston confirming this, showing a picture of a sign out front saying that the Brighton Avenue "has closed for business" and referring customers to the Sunset Cantina on Commonwealth Avenue. (Sunset Grill & Tap's upstairs pool hall Patron's has also closed.) No reason has been given for its closure as of yet, so keep checking back for more details as they come in.

The parent company of Sunset Grill & Tap and Sunset Cantina filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection several months ago, with the filing resulting from worries that the Department of Revenue might seize the dining and drinking spots because of $500,000 in unpaid taxes.

Sunset Grill & Tap first opened its doors in 1988.

The address for the now-closed Sunset Grill & Tap is 130 Brighton Avenue, Allston, MA, 02134.

[June 6, 2018 update: A post from E.F Smith and Son mentions that a public auction will take place at Sunset Grill & Tap  on Tuesday, June 11.]

Ninety Nine Restaurant in Billerica Creates 3,999-Pound Plate of Nachos

A local chain of restaurants built a plate of nachos over the weekend that weighed more than a midsize car, setting a Guinness World Record in the process.

According to The Boston Channel, the Ninety Nine Restaurant in Billerica created a nacho plate that weighed 3,999 pounds, breaking the former record of 3,555 pounds that was set last year in Frisco, TX. The article mentions that the nachos were created to celebrate the addition of a new menu item at the Ninety Nine, and also to start a month-long fundraising event for the Boys & Girls Clubs.

The record-setting plate included 1,105 pounds of nachos, 825 pounds of Monterey jack and cheddar cheeses, 439 pounds of cheese sauce, 451 pounds of salsa, 459 pounds of chili, 199 pounds of jalapeno peppers, 90 pounds of diced red onions, 421 pounds of sour cream, and 8 pounds of chopped cilantro, according to The Boston Channel.
