The James Pub & Provisions in Needham Is Opening a Second Location in Essex

A casual upscale pub in the western suburbs of Boston will soon be joined by another location, with this one being on the North Shore.

According to its website, The James Pub & Provisions in Needham is planning to open a second outlet in Essex this spring, with the address indicating that it will be moving into the space on Main Street that had been home to the Village Restaurant for nearly 70 years until closing down last September. Based on the Needham location (which is located on Great Plain Avenue), expect the new one in Essex to feature modern takes on comfort food, including dishes with Irish influences.

The James first opened in Needham in 2018, taking over the space where The Center Cafe had once been.

The Falconer Taproom & Kitchen in Beverly Has Closed

A European-style pub on the North Shore that was under the same ownership as a brewery north of Boston has shut down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, The Falconer Taproom & Kitchen in Beverly is now closed, with an Instagram post from the Cabot Street spot saying the following:

To our friends and supporters - this has been a tough day as we regretfully made the decision to close The Falconer. Our team has been working hard over the last few months to find a way to continue, but with a lease that is expiring and continued financial losses we could not find a sustainable path forward. We have been working with our employees today and we are happy to announce that we have found roles for many of them at our Newburyport location, so you can still see some of your favorite faces!....It is unfortunate that we weren't able to address this publicly in our planned time frame, but we were focused on communicating with our staff prior to releasing any public info. Our initial response wasn't appropriate, and we apologize.

The people behind Riverwalk Brewing Co. in Newburyport first opened The Falconer Taproom & Kitchen in late 2022.

An Sibin Opens in Cambridge's Inman Square

A new restaurant and pub that focuses at least in part on whiskey has come to Cambridge.

According to a source, An Sibin is now open in the city's Inman Square neighborhood, moving into the space that had been home to Richards, and before that, Tex Mex Eats and Tupelo. An earlier post here had mentioned (via Cambridge Day) that the place was looking to have the feel of a speakeasy with "a little bit more Americana, and have less of the Irishness," while its Instagram page indicates that its goal is to have "one of the largest whiskey [lists] in Cambridge" and being "your second living room."

The Heights Pub Opens in Arlington Heights

A neighborhood restaurant and bar in the northwest suburbs of Boston debuts today, and the owner of a nearby dining and drinking spot is behind it.

According to a Twitter thread from @briankenney7, The Heights Pub opens at 4:00 PM in the old Balich 5 & 10 space in Arlington Heights, with a Facebook post from the Mass. Ave. place confirming this, saying "No reservations, first come first served. Come down and put in your name and phone number and we will call you once your table is ready. We are expecting a big crowd tonight, so please be patient. We look forward to seeing everyone." Plans have been in the works for The Heights Pub since the spring of 2019, with Jim O'Rourke of the First House Pub in Winchester running the place, and like the First House Pub, expect to see comfort food, pub grub, and classic American fare at the new spot along with beer, wine, and cocktails.

Omori Izakaya Opens in the Former Sousaku Bistro Space in Malden

A Japanese pub in Brookline has expanded to a space a few miles north of Boston.

Eater Boston is reporting that Omori Izakaya is now open in the old Sousaku Bistro space in Malden, joining its original location on Station Street in Brookline Village. The Eastern Avenue spot offers such items as sushi, gyoza, pork belly buns, meat skewers, noodles dishes, teriyaki, and more, along with Japanese beer, sake, wine, and cocktails. (The Brookline location of Omori Izakaya opened in November of 2019 in the old Best Burger Bar space.)

Sousaku Bistro was an Asian fusion restaurant that closed in May after being in business for approximately six years.

Mary Dumont Is Opening Plant Pub in Cambridge's Kendall Square

One of the best-known chefs in the Boston area is getting ready to open what looks to be a plant-based beer bar in Cambridge.

According to a source, Plant Pub is planning to open in Kendall Square, with Mary Dumont (Cultivar, Harvest) being behind the West Kendall Street spot. Based on its website and Instagram page, it looks like the upcoming place will initially be open for takeout and delivery, and that it will feature "plant-based versions of your favorite pub foods alongside the best local craft beers," according to its website.

Dumont had been the chef at Harvest in Harvard Square before venturing out to co-own the now-closed Cultivar in downtown Boston; she has also appeared on the Food Network's Iron Chef America while Food and Wine magazine awarded her "best new chef" in 2006.

[September 28 update: According to a press release, Plant Pub is now open, with hours for the fast-casual spot being 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM Tuesday through Saturday (plans are in place to be open on Sunday and Monday as well at some point). A few options offered include plant-based dishes such as cauliflower wings, a kimchi burger, buffalo cauliflower pizza, a chicken tahini bowl and a chicken fried sandwich, while beers include brews from Vitamin Sea, Burlington Beer Co., Orono Brewing, and Vermont Beer Makers.]

The Squealing Pig in West Roxbury Has Closed

A trio of pubs known in part for its craft beer options and comfort food is now back down to two, as one of its Boston outlets has shut down.

According to several sources, The Squealing Pig in West Roxbury is no longer in business, with Universal Hub linking to a Facebook post from the Centre Street spot saying that "We would like to announce that, 'The Squealing Pig of West Roxbury will be closing the doors for good, effective immediately.' We would like to thank our Loyal Customers and employees, especially those who supported us through these difficult times! We are forever grateful. Best Wishes to all!" It appears that locations in Provincetown and Boston's Mission Hill area remain in operation.

The West Roxbury location of The Squealing Pig first opened in the spring of 2018, taking over the Eat with Jack O'Neill space which was under the same ownership. The space had also been home to a longtime spot called West Roxbury Pub & Restaurant.

Donahue's Pub Is Opening in Holbrook

A brand new neighborhood pub is coming to the southern suburbs of Boston, taking over the space where another pub had been hoping to open.

According to a source, Donahue's Pub is getting ready to debut in Holbrook, moving into the former Boston Cream Pie Company on S Franklin Street--and moving into the space where a pub called 32 Counties had been planning to open. Based on a post on its Facebook page, the new bar is not affiliated with 32 Counties, while also saying that it plans to have a "limited" pub grub menu, and another more recent post indicates that Donahue's hopes to open its doors once the restaurant/bar shutdown is lifted (currently May 18 for Massachusetts).

Early last year, we were told that 32 Counties was looking to open in the old Boston Cream Pie Company space, but it never did end up opening, and it isn't known for sure if the pub will try to open elsewhere. Boston Cream Pie Company first opened in the summer of 2017 only to close a year later, with the business originally selling the Boston Cream Pies (along with other pies) from tricycles stationed in Boston.

[May 25 update: Based on a new post from its Facebook page, Donahue's Pub does not expect to debut until at least June 29 at the earliest because they "don't have the proper kitchen to be a restaurant." (Ed note: With bars without kitchens in Massachusetts moving from Phase 3 to Phase 4 after this post was put up, this means that such bars might not be able to open until next year, based on whenever a vaccine/therapeutic might be ready.)]

[October 28 update: A new Facebook post indicates that Donahue's will apparently have a proper kitchen after all, as they are now hiring and will hopefully open "soon."]

Dear Annie to Open in Cambridge's Porter Square Area

A new dining and drinking spot is on its way to Cambridge, and it will focus at least in part on seafood and wine.

According to an article from Boston Magazine, Dear Annie is planning to open on Mass. Ave. on the southern edge of Porter Square, taking over the space where Nomad had been until the boutique shop moved to a new space a short distance closer to the square. The post says that the people behind the watering hole are Lauren Friel (Rebel Rebel Wine Bar in Somerville) and Andrew Brady and Sara Markey (both from Field & Vine in Somerville), and that their plan is to have an ever-changing menu of small plates and bar snacks including tartines, cheese plates, veggie dishes, and seafood, while the bar program will focus on wines.

If all goes as planned, Dear Annie could be opening in the summer of 2020.

Cornwall's in Boston's Kenmore Square Is Moving

A pub that is popular with both college students and sports fans is moving to a new space, though the space isn't very far away.

According to a Twitter post from @BostonTweet, Cornwall's has left its current location on Beacon Street in Boston's Kenmore Square as it gets ready to reopen next door. We have been told that the pub is moving because the building in which resides is being demolished, and it appears that it may open in its new home on Thursday.

Cornwall's first opened in 1973, being known as a laid-back British-style watering hole where customers can play pool and board games. This is actually the second move for the pub, as several sources mention that it used to be housed on nearby Commonwealth Avenue.

The old address for Cornwall's was 654 Beacon Street, and it looks like the new address will be 644 Beacon Street; the website for the pub can be found at http://www.cornwalls.com/

The Heights Pub Plans to Open in Arlington Heights; Jim O'Rourke of First House Pub Behind It

The person behind a neighborhood dining and drinking spot in the northern suburbs is going to be opening a second spot nearby.

According to a Facebook post, Jim O'Rourke of the First House Pub in Winchester has signed a lease to open The Heights Pub in Arlington Heights, taking over the space on Mass. Ave. where Balich 5 & 10 had been until it closed last June. A note within the Facebook thread indicates that much like the First House Pub, the new place will be a family-friendly neighborhood spot that will likely offer comfort food, pub grub, and classic American fare. The Heights Pub still needs to receive approval from the Zoning Board, Select Board and ABCC before it can open, so stay tuned for updates on the place.

First House Pub first opened in Winchester Center in the fall of 2015 in the former Stone Hearth Pizza space, with O'Rourke coming from Conley's Pub in Watertown which had an initial connection to the place.

[September 3 update: The Heights Pub could be one step closer to opening by next week, as Your Arlington states that a Redevelopment Board hearing is slated to take place on Monday, September 9 that will look into a special permit centering around relief from parking requirements.]

[March 2, 2020 update: The issue surrounding parking had put the status of The Heights Pub in question, but plans for the restaurant took a big step forward last week as The Arlington Advocate states that a variance concerning parking has been approved by the Zoning Board of Appeals. The next steps for the dining spot now include the clearing of a 20-day appeal period followed by approval of both a liquor license and expansion of the space. If all goes well, The Heights Pub could be opening sometime this summer.]

[March 4, 2021 update: An article from the Arlington Advocate indicates that The Heights Pub hopes to finally open its doors later this year, with construction planning to start in a few months, which a check on the space shows that a sign is now up for the place.]

Donohue's Bar & Grill in Watertown Reopens After Extensive Renovations

A popular neighborhood watering hole is open once again after completing some major renovations.

A message sent from the owner of the place indicates that Donohue's Bar & Grill in East Watertown has reopened, with its renovations being on pretty much on schedule (it had hoped to open back up by or before St. Patrick's Day). Part of the renovations included knocking down the wall that separated the two rooms of the Bigelow Avenue spot, and setting up a horseshoe-shaped bar in the middle with tables and boots being set up along the outer walls. It appears that the outdoor patio in the back will remain in place.

Donohue's, which first opened approximately 20 years ago, is known as a local hangout that offers pub grub, American classics, beer, wine, and cocktails, and entertainment and events such as live music and art and trivia nights.

Donohue's Bar & Grill in Watertown Closed for Major Renovations; Could Reopen in March

A neighborhood restaurant and bar just west of Boston is closed for the time being, as it is currently undergoing some big upgrades.

According to workers at the place, Donohue's Bar & Grill in East Watertown shut down on Monday, as the Bigelow Avenue pub is going through major renovations where the two rooms will become one, with a horseshoe-shaped bar in the middle of the room and tables and booths surrounding it, including booths along the walls. The previous setup had a bar in each room and a wall completely separating the two sections; the workers we talked to say that the wall is coming down so that it will now be one large area.

If all goes as planned, Donohue's could be reopening sometime in early March, though we were told that the goal is to be open in time for St. Patrick's Day.

Grainne O'Malley's in Brookline Has Opened

Last week, we reported that one of the last of the old-school dining and drinking spots in Brookline had closed. Now we have learned that a new restaurant and bar that was planning to move into the space is now open.

A recent check on the space indicates that Grainne O'Malley's is now open where the Corrib Pub had been, with a phone call placed to the Harvard Street pub indicating that it actually opened its doors last Sunday. As mentioned earlier, it appears that Grainne O'Malley's is starting out as an Irish pub, but it may morph into more of a gastropub at some point.

The Corrib first opened in Brookline back in the mid-1980s, and was one of three locations in the Boston area. (The other two locations in West Roxbury and Brighton remain in business.)

Ames Plow Tavern at Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston Is Closing

A decades-old pub in downtown Boston that is a fixture among tourists and locals alike is getting ready to close.

According to a Facebook post from the place, Ames Plow Tavern within the city's Faneuil Hall Marketplace has decided to shut down for good, with its last day being at the end of 2015. The note says that "we'd like to extend our deepest gratitude to all of our friends both local and out of town that have passed through those doors since we first opened them in 1976, you guys have truly made these last 4 decades special....Cheers and Happy Holidays! -The Arcand Family." At this point in time, it is not known exactly why the owners are shutting down the bar, nor is it known what might be going into its space; as soon as we find out more, we will post an update here.

Ames Plow, which resides mostly in a basement space by the eastern end of Quincy Market's north building, offers mostly pub grub and classic American fare, including clam chowder, wings, burgers, hot dogs, and pizza, along with beer, wine, and cocktails.

Stadium Sports Bar and Grill in Quincy to Become Iron Furnace

What was once a growing local group of sports bars is on the verge of completely disappearing from the landscape, as its last location is getting ready to morph into a new spot.

According to a press release from @PatrickMBoston of Maguire Promotions & Hospitality, Stadium Sports Bar and Grill in Quincy will close after business hours this Sunday (August 30), with the Hancock Street place reopening about 10 days later as Iron Furnace, a casual American restaurant and bar that features creative pub fare, an array of craft beer and cocktail options, entertainment such as comedy and karaoke, and private function rooms. The new dining and drinking spot will continue to be run by Sharon Driscoll and John O'Sullivan, who purchased the Quincy location of Stadium earlier this year and also ran The Crossing in Boston's Mission Hill, which closed this spring after being in business for approximately six years.

[September 8 update: A new message from @PatrickMBoston indicates that Iron Furnace opens its doors tomorrow at 4:00 PM.]

The name "Iron Furnace" is a nod to Quincy's role in the history of this country, notably the John Winthrop, Jr. Iron Furnace Site which was built in 1645 and was the first commercial blast iron furnace in what would become the United States.

Stadium Sports Bar and Grill once had several locations in the Greater Boston area, including downtown Boston, South Boston, Quincy, and Waltham, with talk of others coming to Lynn and Worcester (both of those apparently fell through).

Cathedral Station Is Opening in Former Red Fez Space in Boston's South End

A sports bar and pub that caters to the LGBT community is going to be opening in the South End of Boston, and it has a connection to another South End bar that recently closed to make way for a new spot.

BosGuy is reporting that Cathedral Station will open on Washington Street, taking over the space where the Red Fez, a Middle Eastern restaurant, had been since 1940 (with the place reopening in 2002 after being closed for a number of years). The article says that William Svetz,who had been the general manager of the now-closed Fritz on Chandler Street, is one of the people behind it, and Gary Staples and Joe McGowan of Fritz will also be working there. (Trophy Room will be opening in Fritz's space.)

The Facebook page for Cathedral Station says that the spot will have a dining area, a bar area, and a section for entertainment including dart boards and pool tables, along with an outdoor patio.

According to BosGuy, Cathedral Station could be opening around the end of May.

Owner of The Squealing Pig Is Opening Eat with Jack O'Neill in West Roxbury Pub Space

[Ed note: Eat with Jack O'Neill is now open as of June 5, 2015.]

A local watering hole in a Boston neighborhood has been sold to the person behind a couple of Irish pubs (including one in the city).

Universal Hub is reporting (via The West Roxbury Bulletin) that Diarmuid O'Neill of The Squealing Pig has purchased the West Roxbury Pub & Restaurant, with the plan being for a new spot called Eat with Jack O'Neill to open in the Centre Street space. UH says that the Boston Licensing Board will look into the sale next Wednesday.

[January 29 update: A new article from Universal Hub confirms that the proposed eating and drinking spot will indeed be called Eat with Jack O'Neill, and that the plans include a small bakery in the space as well as a Sunday brunch. UH also says that the sale has received approval from city officials and neighborhood/business groups, but still needs approval from the Boston Licensing Board tomorrow. Finally, the article mentions that the murals of James Michael Curley inside the place will be removed and sold at a charity auction, though the outside mural will remain in place.]

The Ginger Man May Be Coming to Boston's Fort Point Neighborhood

A tavern with locations in New York City and Texas is looking to open a new spot in one of Boston's hottest neighborhoods for dining out.

The Boston Hospitality and Tourism Industry Blog is reporting (via The Boston Herald) that The Ginger Man is planning on opening in the Fort Point area, with the proposed eating and drinking establishment looking at a location on Congress Street. The Herald says that this will be the second time that the bar has tried to come to the neighborhood, as it had attempted to open on Farnsworth Street a couple of years back, only to have it fall through due to concerns from residents in the area. The folks behind The Ginger Man do have a signed lease for the 6,000-square-foot spot on Congress Street, but have not yet received a liquor license (the Boston Licensing Board will meet on a possible license transfer and planned 2:00 AM closing time for the place next week). If the restaurant and bar is able to open in Fort Point, expect farm-to-table fare as well as an extensive array of beers on tap and in bottles.

[February 5 update: A Licensing Board page on the City of Boston website indicates that the group behind the now-closed Purple Shamrock in Boston are seeking to transfer the pub's liquor license to The Ginger Man. (The hearing will take place on Wednesday, February 12.)]

[January 23, 2015 update: A new Licensing Board page on the City of Boston site says that The Ginger Man is now looking to open on State Street where the Stadium Sports Bar & Grill had been until recently closing. This may mean that the Congress Street space fell through, though this has not been confirmed as of yet.]

Currently, The Ginger Man has a location on E 36th Street in Manhattan, as well as in Austin, Dallas, Ft. Worth, Houston, Plano, and Southlake (all in Texas).

Lizzy's Restaurant and Pub in East Cambridge Is Reopening

An East Cambridge restaurant and pub that closed earlier this year is apparently going to be opening its doors once again.

Eater Boston is reporting Lizzy's restaurant and pub on Cambridge Street is planning to open back up in the next few weeks with "shorter hours and a scaled-down menu." The eating and drinking establishment, which focused on a mix of classic American and New American fare, had shuttered in January after being in business for a bit more than a year. [Note: This spot is not connected with Lizzy's Ice Cream on Church Street in the Harvard Square section of the city.]

As soon as we have more details on the new incarnation of Lizzy's restaurant and pub, we will post an update here.

[May 22 update: According to a poster on the Chowhound site (and confirmed by the restaurant's Facebook page), Lizzy's is now open once again. The poster says that the menu is apparently smaller and "more focused," with a strong emphasis on cocktails.]
