Bar Mezzana, No Relation, and Shore Leave in Boston Are Closing

Three popular dining and drinking spots that are part of a local hospitality group are all going to be shutting down.

According to an article in The Boston Globe, Bar Mezzana, No Relation, and Shore Leave in Boston's Ink Block/South End area are planning to close at the end of the year, as they have made the decision to not renew the lease because "financial realities prevailed." All three places are part of Traveler Street Hospitality, with Bar Mezzana being an Italian restaurant, No Relation being a sushi bar, and Shore Leave being a tiki lounge.

It appears that Black Lamb which is also part of Traveler Street Hospitality, will remain in operation (their other spot, FiDO Pizza, recently closed).

FAI Canteen Opens in Boston's South End

A brand new breakfast and lunch spot has come to the South End of Boston, opening where another breakfast and lunch spot had been.

According to a poster within the South End Community Board Facebook group page, FAI Canteen is now open on Albany Street, with the address indicating that it has moved into the former Hidden Kitchen space between Wareham Street and Plympton Street. The new eatery focuses on takeout, though it does have a few seats inside, and it offers such items as avocado toast, tea cakes, breakfast and lunch sandwiches, salads, yogurt, coffee, and more, and it is open from 7:30 AM to 2:00 PM on weekdays only.

Oishii in Boston's South End Is Closing

One of Boston's best-known sushi spots is shutting down.

According to a source, Oishii in the city's South End neighborhood is getting ready to close, with a Facebook post from the Washington Street restaurant saying the following:

After many unforgettable years, Oishii Boston will be closing its doors at the end of business on Father’s Day. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have served our guests, shared special celebrations, and been a part of so many cherished memories. What began as a vision to bring exceptional Japanese cuisine and hospitality to Boston became something much greater because of the support of our loyal customers, dedicated team members, and community. We are proud of the history we have built together—from countless first dates, family dinners, and milestone celebrations to the friendships and connections formed around our tables. Bey Opens in the South End of Boston

Last summer, it was reported that a new restaurant was planning to come to Boston's South End, and now we have learned that it is up and running.

Based on its website and Instagram page along with a post within the South End Community Board Facebook page, Bey is now open on Shawmut Avenue, moving into a space a few storefronts away from Formaggio Kitchen where a yoga studio had previously been. The new dining spot features Lebanese fare, with its menu including such items as hummus, baba ghanouj, tabouli, falafel, grilled octopus, kibbeh, halloumi, kebabs, lamb chops, and grilled branzino, along with beer, wine, and cocktails.

Kawa to Open in the Former Fomu Space in Boston's South End

A new cafe is on its way to Boston, and it will be taking over the space that had been home to a location of a local group of vegan ice cream shops.

According to a post within the South End Community Board Facebook group page, Kawa is planning to open on Tremont Street in the South End, moving into the former FoMu space at the corner of W Brookline Street in the South End. The Instagram page for the upcoming spot indicates that it will be a European-style coffee spot/cafe that focuses on using local products, while also having "a friendly and really warm atmosphere." 

The South End location of FoMu closed toward the end of last year, while other locations of FoMu in Jamaica Plain, the Seaport District, and Allston have also shut down over the past few years (locations in the Fenway and Quincy Market remaining in operation).

Uptown Social Opens in Boston's South End

A highly-anticipated soul food spot has debuted in Boston.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Uptown Social is now open in the city's South End, moving into the space on Columbus Avenue where Darryl's Corner Bar & Kitchen had been until closing in late 2023, and before that, The Stork Club, Circle, Bob's Southern Bistro and Bob The Chef's. As mentioned in an earlier article here, Nia Grace (who was involved with Darryl's and who also runs Grace by Nia in the Seaport District) is behind the new restaurant, which focuses on Southern comfort food and cocktails while also featuring live music.

Mondo to Open in Boston's South End

A new wine bar is on its way to Boston.

According to a poster within the South End Community Board Facebook group page, Mondo is planning to open in the South End, with an article from Swurl indicating that Spenser Payne of Neighborhood Wines, and Travis Robitaille of Petula's are behind the place. The article mentions that dining and drinking spot will offer a New England-inspired food menu with French, Italian, and Spanish influences and that the space will include a patio, while Payne says when it comes to wine options, "The point is to appeal to everybody....From wild and unconventional to really classic."

No opening date for Mondo has been given as of yet, nor has an address been given, so stay tuned for updates as they come in. [Ed note: Drew Starr mentions on Bluesky that the address will be 563 Columbus Avenue in the former Render Coffee space.]

Calisto's Has Replaced Boston Pocket and Deli in the South End

A brand new sandwich shop has debuted in the South End of Boston.

According to a Facebook post from the place within the South End Community Board group page, Calisto's is now open on Tremont Street, with the owners taking over the former Boston Pocket and Deli space. The post gives more info on the new spot, including the following:

Calisto's is a European-inspired sandwich shop combining classic deli tradition with modern creativity....A little about us: Pat grew up in an Italian household and has dreamed of running his own food business for as long as he can remember (he went and got a degree in entrepreneurship to back it up). Nick has always had a passion for design, aesthetics, and the arts. When we saw an opportunity to take over a struggling deli and pour everything we had into it, we jumped. We're combining those two worlds — great food and a space that feels intentional and inviting — to create something we think the South End deserves.

Boston Chops in Boston's South End and Downtown Crossing Have Closed

A pair of steakhouses in Boston have shut down, and it is not yet known what might become of the spaces.

According to multiple sources, Boston Chops in the South End and Downtown Crossing are no longer in operation, with the website for the business saying the following:

...We are grateful for every team member, neighbor, guest, and vendor who built and sustained Boston Chops. It has been an extraordinary journey full of celebrations but we are now closed to make way for new ownership and a revitalized concept to better serve the community. Thank you & you're welcome, Chops Family

The South End location of Boston Chops first opened in 2013, with the Downtown Crossing location debuting in 2018; both restaurants were known in part for their steak and seafood dishes along with their extensive wine list and cocktails.

Novo Lantern Is Replacing Nan Xiang Express in Boston's South End

The group behind a now-closed location of a Shanghainese soup dumpling restaurant will be opening a new dining spot in its space.

According to a job post within the Glassdoor site, Novo Lantern is planning to replace Nan Xiang Express in the South End of Boston, confirming what a member of the South End Community Board Facebook group page posted. The job post says the following about the upcoming Washington Street eatery:

Ting Management Group Corp — owners of Jiang Nan Boston, Nan Xiang Express Chinatown, and Friendship BBQ Allston — is excited to bring a brand-new concept to the South End: Novo Lantern. Novo Lantern puts a modern, fresh twist on traditional Asian flavors.

An opening date for Novo Lantern has not been given as of yet, nor has a menu been seen for the place, though a sign is now up for the restaurant out front.

Brownstone in Boston's South End Has Closed

A neighborhood spot in Boston that was known in part for its comfort food has shut down.

According to its website and Facebook page, Brownstone in the city's South End has closed its doors after approximately 15 years in business, with the Dartmouth Avenue restaurant and bar saying the following on its Facebook page: "Brownstone was fortunate enough to defy the typical lifestyle of a very good restaurant, many times over...but the old girl is tired. It's time." In addition, the following message can be found on its site:

After many wonderful years together, we want to share that Brownstone will be closing its doors. We are so grateful for your loyalty and support - it has meant the world to us. Chef George Mendes to Open Agosto, Baby Sister in Boston's South End

An acclaimed chef who was once based in New York City and now calls Boston his home is planning to open not one, but two new spots in the city.

According to an article in Boston Magazine, George Mendes is planning to open Agosto and Baby Sister in the South End, with the former being a 45-seat restaurant on Washington Street with a chef's counter and a tasting menu, while the latter will be a bakery-cafe that is located next door (and both will have Portuguese influences). It looks like Agosto could open next summer, and Baby Sister is hoping to debut later next year.

George Mendes was the opening chef at Amar at Raffles in the Back Bay which opened in 2023, while also being behind Aldea, a Michelin-starred Manhattan restaurant with Portuguese and Spanish influences that closed in 2020 after more than 10 years in operation.

Burro Bar in Boston's South End Is Becoming Another Location of Posto

A Mexican restaurant and tequila bar in the South End of Boston appears to be getting a rebrand, and the change will be a familiar name from a restaurant group that runs both.

According to a licensing board hearing page within the city's website, Burro Bar on Washington Street is petitioning to change its name to Posto, which, if approved, will mean that there would be two locations of Posto (with the other being in Somerville's Assembly Row), both of which are part of Joe Cassinelli's Alpine Restaurant Group which also includes the Painted Burro in Somerville, Cambridge, Brookline, and Waltham. It is not yet known whether the proposed new location of Posto will have a similar menu to that of the Somerville location (which offers pizza and pasta dishes along with other Italian options), but more should be known by late next week after the hearing, so stay tuned for updates.

Burro Bar first opened in the South End in 2017.

It looks like a new restaurant is on its way to the South End of Boston.

According to a licensing board hearing page, Bey is planning to open on Shawmut Avenue, with the address indicating that it will be taking over the space a few storefronts away from Formaggio Kitchen where a yoga studio had been. The notice mentions that the dining spot is seeking a full liquor license and that it hope to have two levels of seating, with space for 41 people on the ground floor and another 26 in the basement.

It appears that Bey could be opening in early September, though no other information has been given as of yet (including what might be on the menu).

Louis Corner Is Opening in Boston's South End

Late last summer, it was announced that a local restaurant group would be opening a new dining spot in the South End of Boston, and now we have learned that it is just about ready to debut.

According to a press release, Louis Corner is slated to open its doors on Wednesday, August 6, moving into the space on Tremont Street that had been home to The Butcher Shop. As mentioned in an earlier article, Mazi Food Group (Desnuda Cocina & Bar, Kava Neo-Taverna, Gigi, Ilona) is behind the new place, which will be "an elevated yet timeless American gastropub" with some Irish influences along with regional specialties ranging from the Northeast to the South. The press release indicates that Louis Corner will be open for lunch and dinner, and it will also have a weekend brunch as well.

The Butcher Shop, which closed in the summer of 2023, was one of a handful of restaurants and bars from Barbara Lynch, though all of her dining/drinking spots are now closed.

According to a licensing committee hearing page, a dining/drinking spot tentatively called Mondo is looking to open on Columbus Avenue, moving into a space just east of the Massachusetts Avenue intersection. The notice mentions that the proposed place would have a dining area and bar seating along with a seasonal outdoor patio, and the manager listed is Spenser Payne, who runs Neighborhood Wines on Tremont Street in the South End. The hearing is slated to take place next week, so more should be known about the plans at that point.

An East African dining spot is on its way to the South End of Boston.

According to a licensing board hearing page within the city's website, Mesob Restaurant is planning to open on Washington Street near where it intersects Massachusetts Avenue, with its exact address indicating that it may be taking over the space where the Senegalese dining spot Teranga had been. The listing mentions that the proposed eatery would have one main dining room and that the business is seeking a full liquor license, while a street abutters meeting notice says that it would be an East African restaurant that plans to be open Monday-Thursday from noon to 11:00 PM, Fridays from noon to 1:00 AM, Saturdays, from 8:00 AM to 1:00 AM, and Sundays from 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM.

Render Coffee in Boston's South End Is Closing

The original location of what had once been a small group of coffee bars is shutting down, leaving only one remaining.

According to a poster within the South End Community Board Facebook group page, Render Coffee on Columbus Avenue is planning to close on April 5, with another poster showing a photo of a sign out front saying "Coming Soon: New Bakery/Coffee Generation." Once the South End location of Render Coffee, closes, the only location left will be in Boston's Seaport District; there had also been outlets in the Financial District and Charlestown, but those are no longer in operation.

The South End location of Render first opened in 2012, taking over the space where Uptown Espresso had once been.

Lobstah on a Roll in Boston's South End Has Closed

It looks like the original location of a restaurant known in part for its oversized lobster rolls has shut down.

According to a poster within the South End Community Board Facebook group page, Lobstah on a Roll in Boston's South End is no longer in business, with a "for lease" sign apparently up on the building and the website for the business removing the Columbus Avenue location, while the phone for the place no longer is in operation. The Newbury Street outlet in the Back Bay is still open and is one of two remaining (the other being in St. Augustine, FL), as the Salem location no longer exists and one that was being planned for Arlington never came to fruition.

Lobstah on a Roll first opened in the old Emma's space in the South End in the fall of 2017, featuring different sizes of lobster rolls, including one nearly two feet long.

Capri Italian Steakhouse Is Opening in Boston's South End

It looks like a new Italian dining spot is on its way to Boston, and it appears to have a connection to a local restaurant group.

According to a post within the jobs section of the bostonchefs.com website, a new restaurant featuring "Italian-inspired hospitality" is on its way to the city's South End neighborhood in May, with the listing mentioning that "the team behind Capo, Lincoln and Prima" will be opening the place; Capo and Lincoln are part of the Broadway Restaurant Group, which also includes Fat Baby, Hunter's Kitchen, and Loco Taqueria & Oyster Bar, all of which are located in South Boston, while Prima--which resides in Charlestown--has a connection to the group as well.

A poster within the South End Community Board Facebook group page mentioned a couple of months ago that the restaurant will be moving into the former Cinquecento space at 500 Harrison Avenue in the SoWa district, which has been confirmed.
