Achilito's Taqueria to Open in the Former Little Steve's Pizzeria Space in Boston's Back Bay/Fenway Area

A local group of Mexican restaurants will be expanding to a new location in Boston, moving into a space that had been home to a pizzeria that closed earlier this year.

According to a message sent from Adam Castiglioni of @conciergeboston.bsky.social (via a Bluesky post from @copleyscott17.bsky.social), Achilito's Taqueria is planning to open in the city's Back Bay/Fenway area, taking over the former Little Steve's Pizzeria space on Boylston Street (a sign is currently up for the place out front). Once it opens, the new location of the eatery will join others in the Forest Hills section of Jamaica Plain, Cambridge's Harvard Square, and Patriot Place in Foxboro, and it will likely offer such items as tacos, burritos, quesadillas, flautas, enchiladas, tostadas, and more.

Little Steve's Pizzeria shut down sometime around the beginning of 2026 after being in business since the spring of 2025; it had opened in the space where the original Little Steve's Pizzeria had been from 1968 until closing a few years ago. (The two versions of the place had different ownership.)

Burrito Rose to Open in the Former Bueno Y Sano Space in Maynard

A brand new Mexican restaurant is on its way to the western suburbs of Boston, and it will be moving into the space where a location of a group of Mexican eateries had been.

According to a source, Burrito Rose is going to be opening in Maynard, taking over the former Bueno Y Sano space in the Maynard Crossing plaza. A Sudbury Weekly article mentions that the upcoming spot will be a fast-casual restaurant, with its menu showing such options as burritos, tacos, quesadillas, nachos, burrito bowls, and more.

Bueno Y Sano closed its Maynard location earlier this year while its Acton outlet shuttered in 2025; other locations remain open in Western Massachusetts and Vermont.

Pink Taco in Boston's Fort Point/Seaport District Has Closed

What was once a small group of Mexican restaurants has now completely disappeared, as its sole remaining location (which was in Boston) has shut down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Pink Taco in the Fort Point/Seaport District section of the city is no longer in business, with a photo showing a permanently closed sign out front. No reason has been given for its closure, and this is the last location to be in business (there had once been locations in such places as Las Vegas, Scottsdale, Los Angeles, New York, and Washington, D.C. but they are all gone).

The Boston location of Pink Taco debuted back in 2019.

Anna's Taqueria Opens in South Boston

A bit more than a year ago, it was reported that a local group of Mexican eateries was planning to open a new location in South Boston, and now we have learned that it is up and running.

According to a press release, Anna's Taqueria is now open in Southie, moving into a space on W Broadway a short distance west of the Dorchester Street intersection. The new location of Anna's has 3,000 square feet of space and seating for 36 people including high-top communal tables, booths, and traditional table seating, and it is part of an expansion that includes a new outlet in Cranston, RI, and another one soon debuting in Concord, NH, with all joining a number of locations in the Greater Boston area.

Amelia's Taqueria in Brighton's Cleveland Circle Area Has Closed

Last week, it was reported that a location of a local group of Mexican restaurants had closed, and now we have learned that another location not too far away from that one has shut down as well.

According to a source, Amelia's Taqueria in Brighton is no longer in business, with a check on the website for the business confirming that the Cleveland Circle location has been removed from the site. This comes on the heels of the Allston outlet shuttering, which means that the only locations remaining are by Berklee College in the Fenway/Back Bay area and at Assembly Row in Somerville.

Amelia's Taqueria in Allston Has Closed

A location of a local group of Mexican restaurants that reopened last year after being shuttered for well over two years due to a fire has closed permanently.

According to a post from @DarylDonatelli, Amelia's Taqueria in Allston is no longer in business, with a note out front at the Brighton Avenue storefront indicating that it shut down earlier this month while saying that "We appreciate your support for the past 14 years." The location has indeed been removed from the website, though it does appear that locations by Berklee College, Boston College, and at Assembly Row in Somerville remain in operation.

The Allston location of Amelia's was one of several businesses hit by a multi-alarm blaze in September of 2022, with the fire destroying the interior of the restaurant.

Viva Burrito in Boston's Fenway Has Closed

A pair of Mexican restaurants in Boston is down to one, as its newer location has shut down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Viva Burrito in the city's Fenway neighborhood has closed, with a sign out front at the Peterborough Street space indicating that it shuttered earlier this week. The sign does indicate that the Franklin Street location in the Financial District will remain open, and that customers can continue to order online.

The Fenway location of Viva Burrito first opened in the spring of 2025, taking over the space where the original location of El Pelon Taqueria had been (El Pelon continues to operate a restaurant on Commonwealth Avenue in Brighton).

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Mexicana Grill & Cantina is now open in West Newton, moving into the space on Washington Street that had previously been home to Ninebark Kitchen + Drinks, and before that, Burke's Alewerks and a location of The Local. An Instagram post from It's In Newton mentions that owners Antonio de Trizio and Nicolas Ruiz previously owned Latina Kitchen & Bar in Needham, while the menu for the place shows such options as taquitos, burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas, fajitas, tacos, tortas, flautas, churros, and flan, along with a variety of margaritas.

Villa Mexico in Downtown Boston Is Going to Remain Open

Last week, it was reported that a Mexican restaurant in downtown Boston was facing a possible closure, and now we have learned that it will continue in operation.

According to a Facebook post, Villa Mexico on Water Street is going to stay open, with owner Julie King saying that "we could get some personal loans and we could pay our rent that we owed...we are going to stay here...we are doing our best to keep open, but we need you....I will be waiting with my open arms to welcome you as usual and to tell you thank you thank you thank you because if it is not because of you, we would not be here."

Rocco's Tacos & Tequila Bar Is Opening in the Former Rosa Mexicano Space at the Burlington Mall

A small chain of Mexican restaurants with roots in Florida will be expanding to the local area, with its first New England location coming to the northern suburbs of Boston.

According to an article from the Daily Times Chronicle, Rocco's Tacos & Tequila Bar is planning to open at the Burlington Mall, moving into the space where Rosa Mexicano Space used to be. Once it opens, expect to see such items as tacos, guacamole, quesadillas, burritos, and enchiladas, along with a wide variety of tequila options.

Villa Mexico in Downtown Boston Is Facing Closure

A beloved Mexican restaurant in the heart of Boston is facing an uncertain future.

According to a Facebook post from the business, Villa Mexico on Water Street is being asked to close down and leave its space, with the post saying the following:

Dear friends, If you get our newsletter, you would have read that we were asked to close and vacate by today (3/30) due to owed rent. We got this news on an email on Thursday(3/26) morning. Our landlord has every legal right to do this. Since getting the email we mobilized any and all community support to ask him to let us finish the year upon payment. As of now, we were asked to clear a common area storage room and given until April 9 to close. We are still going to try to get longer. Why? For these reasons: -try to sell equipment -use that money to pay our team at least 2 week's wages since they're losing their jobs -donate existing supplies and food -close with dignity We know we owe rent. We want to pay it. We've been here 10 years, through thick and thin, and we believe (and hope) we can get this....We promise that as soon as we have more news we will update you on email and social media. Villa Mexico had once been located within a gas station on Cambridge Street in Beacon Hill until closing in 2013; the dining spot reopened in its current space three years later. The restaurant has received much praise over the years, including "best of" awards from such publications as Boston Magazine and Time Out.

An award-winning Mexican restaurant that has been around for a long time is shutting down.

According to a source, El Sarape in Weymouth Landing is closing, with a Facebook post from the Commercial Street spot saying the following:

It is with a heavy heart, after 37 wonderful years serving the town of Braintree and our many dedicated and supportive customers, the Adame family has made the tough decision to close El Sarape. Next Saturday, April 4 will be the last day El Sarape's doors will be open. This decision was not easily made, however it is necessary. The Adame family, Javier, Guillermo, Donna, Nicole Jessica, Miguel and our staff would like to thank all of our customers, new and old for their patronage....We appreciate each and every one of you more than you will ever know. El sarape has always been and will always be a family

El Sarape has received high praise over the years, including once being picked by USA Today and Zagat in an article mentioning the restaurants with the best Mexican food in 20 cities while The Daily Meal also once wrote that it was among the 50 best Mexican restaurants in America.

Cilantro's Mexican Grill Is Opening in the Former Smashburger Space in Medford

A couple of months ago, it was reported that a Boston-area location of a Colorado-based chain of quick-casual burger restaurants had closed, and now we have learned what is going into its space.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Cilantro's Mexican Grill is planning to open in Medford, moving into the space on Riverside Avenue that had been home to a location of Smashburger. It appears that this will be another location of the Cilantro's Mexican Grill that resides in the Village Park Shopping Center on Main Street in Saugus and which serves such items as burritos, chimichangas, quesadillas, tacos, nachos, rice bowls, and more.

The Medford location of Smashburger had been in the space from 2015 until the latter part of 2025.

Last year, one of two locations of a group of Mexican restaurant in Boston suburbs closed its doors, and now we have learned that the other location in the Greater Boston area has shut down as well.

According to a source, Bueno Y Sano in Maynard is no longer in business, with a Facebook post from February 13 from the business saying the following:

To all of our loyal customers and friends: Our Maynard location has permanently closed. We want to thank you all for your patronage over the years. Please visit any of our 7 other locations in Western MA and S. Burlington, VT.

The Maynard outlet of Bueno Y Sano first opened in 2022, approximately ten years after the Acton location debuted; that restaurant shuttered in the summer of 2025.

Monarca Taqueria Opens in Waltham

Last summer, it was reported that a Mexican restaurant southwest of Boston would be expanding to another location much closer to the city, and now we have learned that it is up and running.

According to a Facebook post from The Waltham Channel, the people behind Monarca Taqueria in Milford have opened a new location in Waltham, moving into the space on Main Street that had once been home to Gustazo before it moved to its current home on Moody Street in 2020. The new outlet of the dining spot is open for lunch and dinner and offers such options as traditional Mexican soups, quesadillas, burritos, bowls, and seafood options including ceviche along with margaritas and other beverages.

Citrus & Salt Plans to Open in the Former Osteria Nino Space in Burlington

A bit more than a month ago, an Italian restaurant in the northern suburbs of Boston closed down after being in business for ten years, and now we have learned that a dining spot with a familiar name will be moving into its space.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page (via a What Now Boston article along with a North Shore Dining Facebook comment and a special permit filed at the address), Citrus & Salt is planning to open in the former Osteria Nino space in Burlington, with this being the second location of Jason Santos's restaurant. This news has been confirmed in a February 5 planning board meeting notice page within the town's website, mentioning Blue Salt LLC d/b/a Citrus & Salt in the listing.

Once it opens, the new location of Citrus & Salt will join another that is located on A Street in Boston's Fort Point neighborhood and which focuses on coastal dishes from Southern California and Mexico; that restaurant had previously been on Berkeley Street in the Back Bay, moving to the old Oak + Rowan space in the spring of 2024.

Citrus & Salt is one of several dining spots from local chef and restaurateur Jason Santos (Buttermilk & Bourbon, Ghost Light Tavern, Butterbird).

Agave Mexican Bistro in Newburyport Has Closed; Will Open for One Final Service February 13

A Mexican restaurant on the North Shore has shut down, though there will be one more chance to dine at the place.

According to a source, Agave Mexican Bistro in Newburyport is now closed, though both a Facebook post from the Daily News of Newburyport and an Instagram post from the business indicate that the dining spot will reopen on February 13 at 4:00 PM for "an evening of drinks and a small menu" (no reservations, dine-in and cash-only). Agave, which first opened in Newburyport 25 years ago, had been one of a pair of locations including one in Portsmouth which closed around the start of the pandemic in the spring of 2020.

A Southern California-inspired restaurant north of Boston is closing its doors.

According to a source, BuenoMalo in Andover is shutting down, with a Facebook post from the Main Street dining spot indicating that its last day is slated to be January 24. BuenoMalo first opened in 2017, offering a mix of Mexican fare and SoCal items including street corn and chips, surf-and-turf quesadillas, California burritos, chipotle shrimp, fish tacos, churros, margaritas, and Mexican coke.
