Agoro's in Brighton Is Closing

by Marc Hurwitz

A troubled watering hole and pizza spot in Brighton that had replaced another troubled watering hole and pizza spot is shutting down.

The Allston Brighton Veterans Facebook page states (via an article from BC Heights) that Agoro's Pizza Bar and Grill in Cleveland Circle is closing for good on Sunday, with co-owner Dimitrios Liakos saying that "Selling a business is a very difficult decision, but we have decided to focus on putting our family first....With another newborn on the way it's just too much work and too demanding to give this location our 100%." Liakos also told BC Heights that "We have come to realize that the College area isn't where we need to be....We will never return to Cleveland Circle, that's for sure."

Agoro's Pizza Bar and Grill has faced disciplinary hearings from both the city of Boston and the commonwealth during its relatively brief existence, with Universal Hub indicating that the Chestnut Hill Avenue spot had been given three weeks' worth of license suspensions and was forced to cut its hours because of issues with underage drinking (including students from nearby Boston College).

Agoro's first opened in October of 2016, moving into the space where Roggie's had been. Roggie's had been shut down by the city after an incident involving a customer; according to reports, the patron fell down the stairs of the bar, with the owner allegedly having workers place the badly-injured person in an alleyway, then the owner reportedly tampered with the video-surveillance system.

A second location of Agoro's can be found in Somerset.

Feng Shui Is Opening in Brighton's Cleveland Circle

A group of Chinese and Japanese restaurants with four locations in the local area is looking to open a fifth--and its first within the Boston city limits.

Universal Hub is reporting that Feng Shui is planning to open in the Cleveland Circle section of Brighton, with the dining spot moving into the space on Beacon Street where a branch of Citibank had been. Based on its other locations in Chelmsford, Cohasset, Tyngsboro, and Waltham, the new eatery may be offering sushi, dumplings, and Chinese and Japanese entrees, and it looks like it will also be serving beer and wine if a liquor license is approved.

Another location of Feng Shui had been in Natick, but it closed down in 2012.

The address for this new restaurant in Cleveland Circle is: Feng Shui, 1924 Beacon Street, Brighton, MA, 02135. The website for all locations can be found at: http://www.gofengshui.com/

[January 11, 2018 update: According to a licensing board page within the city's website, Feng Shui could be one step closer to opening in Brighton by next week, as a hearing will be held on January 17 to look into a liquor license transfer for the place--and the license may be coming from the Phillips Old Colony House, a landmark restaurant and function hall in Dorchester that shut down in January of 2016.]

[September 17, 2018 update: Eater Boston states that the new location of Feng Shui in Brighton is now open.]

Amelia's Taqueria to Open in Former Real Deal Deli Space in Brighton's Cleveland Circle

A pair of Mexican restaurants will soon be opening a third shop, and this one will move into the space where a location of a deli had been.

Boston Magazine is reporting that Amelia's Taqueria is planning to open in the Cleveland Circle section of Brighton, taking over the spot on Beacon Street where The Real Deal Deli had been. The article says that the new eatery will mainly be used for takeout, but it will also be the largest location of Amelia's yet, with about 1,200 square feet of space and seating for approximately 30 people. Once it opens, the new location of Amelia's will join others in Allston and by Northeastern University.

The Real Deal Deli shut down its Cleveland Circle location around the beginning of the year, though its shops in West Roxbury and Jamaica Plain remain in operation.

Boloco Closes in Brighton's Cleveland Circle

A local group of restaurants that features burritos has closed one of its first locations.

According to a Facebook post, Boloco shut down its shop in the Cleveland Circle section of Brighton, saying "So Long Old Friend....Thank you to the nearly 1,000 team members who made burritos for the over 2,000,000 of you who visited us during that time. We will remember." A post from Universal Hub gives more information on the closure, including a note from the chain that says the following: "Why are we closing, you may ask? The simple truth is that for the last 3-4 years we have lost money at Cleveland Circle - quite a bit of it, in fact. With Boloco's high quality ingredients and highest paid employees in the industry, we needed more customers every day to run a sustainable business and whatever we were (or more likely not) doing at that location just didn't attract enough of you. It really always comes down to simple math."

A timeline page within its website states that the Beacon Street location of Boloco opened in 1998 when it was called The Wrap, joining its original location on Massachusetts Avenue in Boston's Back Bay (it was briefly called Under Wraps) and a second shop on Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge's Harvard Square. Today, locations of the Park Plaza-based group of dining spots can be found in downtown Boston, the Back Bay, the Northeastern University area, Children's Hospital in the Longwood area, Cambridge's Harvard Square, Lynnfield, Natick, and Wellesley, along with four others in New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

The address for the now-closed location of Boloco in Cleveland Circle was 1940 Beacon Street, Brighton, MA, 02135.

Former Applebee's Building in Brighton's Cleveland Circle Being Demolished

A now-closed location of a casual restaurant chain that was popular with college students is in the process of being torn down to make way for new development.

A Twitter post from @davharris of the Boston Business Journal shows a picture of the former Applebee's in the Cleveland Circle section of Brighton being fenced off and apparently in the process of demolition, with the post including the note "So long, Applebee's in Cleveland Circle. We hardly knew ye" and a reply from him confirming that it is indeed being torn down today. Both the restaurant and the old Circle Cinema are being replaced by a complex that may include a hotel, luxury senior housing, retail space, and one or two restaurants (including what could be a high-end dining spot).

The Cleveland Circle location of Applebee's shut down for good last summer.

Chipotle in Brighton's Cleveland Circle Reopens After Closure Due to Norovirus Outbreak

A Brighton dining spot that closed earlier this month after diners became sick from eating at the place is open once again after getting clearance from the city of Boston over the weekend.

WCVB Boston mentions that Chipotle in Cleveland Circle opened back up on Saturday after being disinfected Saturday morning and passing a city inspection that afternoon. The Beacon Street eatery shuttered on December 7 after patrons contracted the norovirus (apparently from a sick employee), with the illness spreading to well over 100 students from Boston College. It appeared that Chipotle was going to open on Christmas Eve, but it reportedly had a water leak that kept it closed for the time being.

The address for the Cleveland Circle location of Chipotle is 1924 Beacon Street, Brighton, MA, 02135.

Chipotle in Brighton's Cleveland Circle Closed After Diners Become Ill

A Brighton restaurant is closed for the time being after a number of people--including some college basketball players--became sick from eating at the place.

WCVB Boston is reporting that 30 people who ate at Chipotle in Cleveland Circle were sickened--possibly from E. coli--after dining there, forcing the eatery to shut down while local health officials work with the Beacon Street spot to investigate. The article mentions that those affected include at least eight Boston College basketball players among others from the school, with BC sending the following alert to students: "The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has been notified and is working to determine if there is a link to the ongoing national outbreak of E. coli." (So far, a connection has not been made between this and a nationwide outbreak that has affected at least 52 diners in nine states.)

[December 10 update: According to multiple reports--including an article from WBUR--city health officials have discovered that diners at the Cleveland Circle location of Chipotle actually became sick by norovirus, which is a contagious gastrointestinal illness. The post also says that more than 120 students from Boston College are now ill from the virus, and that it is spreading to people who did not eat at Chipotle (which remains closed for the time being).]

[December 22 update: The Boston Business Journal mentions that the Cleveland Circle location of Chipotle should be reopening later this week, pending work license paperwork that confirms the eatery has been disinfected along with a final inspection. The BBJ also says that a total of 140 people were infected with a sick employee being the cause, and the manager who did not send the worker home has been let go.]

[December 23 update: According to a new post from the WCVB site, Boston Inspectional Services has stated that Chipotle in Cleveland Circle is now disinfected, and if the eatery passes inspection today, it will be able to reopen.]

[December 23 update #2: WHDH states that health inspectors have given Chipotle the green light to open tomorrow.]

[December 24 update: @7News says that Chipotle will not be opening today after all because it has a water leak.]

The Cleveland Circle location of Chipotle is located at 1924 Beacon Street.

Sign and Awning Down at Mary Ann's in Brighton's Cleveland Circle; Appears to Be for Renovations

Questions about the status of an infamous dive bar and college hangout have come up over the past 24 hours, but it appears that the place may simply be undergoing renovations.

According to a source, the sign and awning at Mary Ann's in the Cleveland Circle section of Brighton are down, with a Twitter post confirming this and showing workers at the site. And while there has been chatter as to whether the Beacon Street watering hole is closed for good or simply getting a facelift, another source tells us that it appears to be the latter--that the bar is simply getting a new sign. This has not been confirmed 100% as of yet, but it does seem that the bar remains open for business. (Phone calls to the place have gone unanswered, with no voicemail clicking in.)

Mary Ann's has received several suspensions over the past couple of years for underage drinking, with the city of Boston looking into the possibility awhile back of reducing the bar's hours because of past troubles there.

The address for Mary Ann's is 1937 Beacon Street, Brighton, MA, 02135.

Update: Sa Pa in Brighton's Cleveland Circle to Be Replaced by Jade Monkey

[Ed note: This article was updated on December 4 to reflect confirmation of the restaurant's closure (and what might be replacing it).]

It looks like a pair of Vietnamese restaurants in Boston has dropped back down to one, as its second location appears to be shuttered.

According to a Twitter post from @LokayWCVB, Sa Pa in the Cleveland Circle section of Brighton is closed, with a photo showing the windows and front door being papered over. The restaurant's website still lists the Beacon Street shop, though a Google search shows that Google considers the eatery to be permanently closed. It looks like the original location of Sa Pa on Bedford Street in downtown Boston remains in operation.

Sa Pa first opened in Cleveland Circle in May of 2014, taking over the space where Bangkok Bistro had been until moving to Washington Street near Brighton Center. The dining spot offered banh mi, pho, and vermicelli bowls, along with kimchi, steamed buns, and egg rolls.

The address for this now-closed Vietnamese restaurant in Brighton was: Sa Pa, 1952 Beacon Street, Brighton, MA, 02135. The website for the original location can be found at https://www.sa-pa.com/

[December 4 update: Based on a hearing notice sent to us this morning, we now have confirmation that Sa Pa in Brighton has indeed closed for good. The notice says that a new dining spot called Jade Monkey is planning to move into the space and it also mentions that the petition to change the business from Sa Pa to Jade Monkey includes a change in the manager of the business as well.]

[February 8, 2016 update: Eater Boston states that Jade Monkey is now open and that it features Asian fusion cuisine; the post also says that the new spot is under the same ownership as that of the former Sa Pa.]

Cityside Bar in Brighton's Cleveland Circle Temporarily Shut Down by City of Boston (Again)

A restaurant and bar that is particularly popular with college students has been temporarily shut down by the city of Boston--and it appears that this isn't the first time this has happened.

According to a Twitter post that went up this morning, Cityside in the Cleveland Circle section of Brighton is shuttered, with a sign from the city saying "Closed! By Order of Licensing Board for the City of Boston" and another sign from the dining and drinking spot saying "We Will Be Closed Mon 10/5-Wed 10/7." It is not known exactly why the Beacon Street watering hole was shut down (recent Violations pages within the city's website do not mention Cityside); a similar note from the Licensing Board had actually been posted in July of 2013, with the place being closed for at least a few days back then for what was also unspecified reasons.

[October 8 update: Based on a Facebook post from the place, Cityside reopens today.]

Cityside has been in business for approximately 30 years.
