Whitney's in Cambridge's Harvard Square Is Closing

It appears that one of the last dive bars in Cambridge is shutting down.

According to an article from The Boston Globe along with a post from Cambridge Day, it looks like Whitney's in Harvard Square will be closing on December 31, with the closure apparently stemming from a dispute between the bar owner and the landlord, with the former saying that they are being kicked out for daytime noise levels/noise from music while the latter is saying it is because of nonpayment of rent. Whitney's has been in business since 1953, being a place frequented by locals for beer, liquor, wings, and darts.

Merai Opens in Brookline Village

Last spring it was reported that the people behind an award-winning Thai restaurant would be opening a new spot, and now we have learned that it has opened.

According to an article in Eater Boston, Merai is now open in Brookline Village, moving into the space on Harvard Street where Matt Murphy's Pub had once been. Eater states that the new place is a Thai version of a dive bar (Merai means "alcohol" in Thai) and it offers such items as wings, hot dogs, and fries with Asian influences while also serving a variety of cocktails.

As mentioned in an earlier article here, Merai has an ownership connection to Mahaniyom, which debuted in Brookline Village in 2020 and has received much praise from Eater, The Boston Globe, and Boston Magazine since opening.

The Connection in South Boston Is Going Up for Sale

It looks like another dive bar could be going away.

According to an article from Caught in Southie, The Connection in the Andrew Square section of South Boston is going to be put up for sale, with an Instagram post from Joyce Lebedew Real Estate saying that the listing for the Dorchester Avenue will include "the real estate offering excellent development opportunity, the business which includes a full kitchen and a 2 AM fully transferable liquor license!"

A number of dive bars in South Boston have shut down over recent times, including Aces High, the Cornerstone Pub, the Quencher Tavern, Williams Tavern, and Kiley's.

Former Fireside Tavern Space in Jamaica Plain to Be Demolished, Replaced with Mixed-Used Development

Last March, it was reported that another old-school Boston dive bar was closing, and now we have learned that its building is slated to be torn down to make room for a new complex.

According to an article from the Jamaica Plain News (via the Approved Building Permits section of the City of Boston site), a permit has been issued to build a mixed-use apartment building at the site of the old J.J. Foley's Fireside Tavern space in the Forest Hills section of JP, with the development including nine residential units and ground-floor retail space. The post mentions that a separate permit to tear down the former bar has not yet been issued, though an excavation permit has been approved for work on the sewer and water systems along with the roadway.

J.J. Foley's Fireside Tavern dated back to at least the 1940s.

The Riptide Lounge in Marblehead Is for Sale

A decades-old dive bar on the North Shore is on the market.

According to a source, the Riptide Lounge in Marblehead is up for sale, with Sam Gifford of Churchill Properties indicating that the building is priced at $1 million, including the second floor above the watering hole. The listing indicates that the space could continue to be home to a restaurant and/or bar, as it says the seller "is willing to cooperate with new owners on transferring existing Liquor License, if desired and permitted."

The Riptide is mostly a local hangout with pool, darts, and a jukebox along with some bar food.

B.K.'s Pub in Roslindale Appears to Be Closing

It looks like another old-school neighborhood bar in Boston is shutting down.

Based on a tweet from @kathyschwartz (who is the daughter of the late owner), B.K.'s Pub in Roslindale is apparently closing its doors, with the tweet saying that "I'm sad to know BK's will be no longer but a good friend of my dad told me there isn't BK's without Bob Keith." An earlier licensing board hearing page within the City of Boston website shows that the liquor license for the Washington Street bar is slated to be transferred to Borrachito and The Garret Boston, a combination taqueria/cocktail bar that plans to open in the Seaport District.

Silhouette Lounge in Allston Reopens Under New Management

A beloved Boston dive bar has returned.

According to a press release, as well as an article from Universal Hub (via @BrandonBowser3), the Silhouette Lounge in Allston opens back up today under new management, with Fred Starikov of City Realty and his business partners taking over the Brighton Avenue watering hole, as the previous owner Joseph Eliseo--who first purchased the place in 1979--has retired. Universal Hub says that no changes are expected, while the press release confirms this, saying that other than some minor cosmetic repairs, the place will remain as is.

The Silhouette Lounge, which dates back to 1965, is known in part for its cheap beer, darts, and free popcorn.

Newtowne Grille in Cambridge Is Closing Down

A decades-old Cambridge watering hole that is known for its pizza is saying farewell.

According to an article from Cambridge Day, Newtowne Grille in the city's Porter Square area is closing its doors this weekend, with Saturday expected to be its last day in business. The old-school bar, which dates back to the mid-1960s, had been closed for a number of months due to the outbreak of the coronavirus in March of 2020, but it opened back up shortly before Thanksgiving of that year.

Cambridge Day says that the people behind Sugar & Spice, which resides in the same block, will be taking over the Newtowne Grill space, opening a new Asian concept there.

It appears that the Billerica location of Newtowne Grill will remain in operation.

J.J. Foley's Fireside Tavern in Jamaica Plain Is Closing

Yet another longtime dive bar in Boston is shutting down.

According to a source within the restaurant industry, J.J. Foley's Fireside Tavern in the Forest Hills section of Jamaica Plain is closing its doors this weekend, with Sunday slated to be its last day in operation. J.J Foley's--which has an indirect ownership connection to the two J.J. Foley's in Boston's South End and Financial District--dates back to at least the 1940s, offering cheap drinks (no food, though people can bring food in) and having an electric fireplace while also having games such as darts and pinball, the latter of which is no longer there.

The Beacon Hill Pub in Boston May Become the Charles Street Pub

A dive bar in Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood that changed ownership a couple of years ago may be getting a name change--and a management change as well.

According to a licensing board hearing page within the city's website, the parent company of the Beacon Hill Pub on Charles Street is petitioning to transfer the licensed business to a new owner/operator, with the proposed name of the new place being the Charles Street Pub. The notice lists the manager as Chaz Fisher, while the parent company (149 Charles Pub LLC) includes both Fisher and Kyra Deligiannides as directors/officers, according to the OpenCorporates site. Little else is known about the transfer, including any changes to the space or concept, so stay tuned for updates next week when the meeting is held.

The Beacon Hill Pub closed down in 2018 only to have the Greater Boston Bar Co. take it over and reopen the bar, which remains in operation.

Update: Mary Ann's Could Be Rebranded as New Restaurant and Bar in Allston

[Ed note: This article was updated on November 3 to reflect the fact that this is apparently more of a license/location transfer and a rebranding than a true move.]

A now-closed dive bar that catered in part to students could be returning in some form, though to a new location.

According to an article from Universal Hub, a license transfer is being proposed where the license of Mary Ann's from Beacon Street in Brighton's Cleveland Circle area would go to a space on Franklin Street near where it meets Cambridge Street. The post mentions that City Realty, which has been buying a number of local bars of late including Mary Ann's, is behind the plans, with a licensing board hearing slated to look at it on Wednesday, November 3.

As stated earlier here, the old Mary Ann's space is supposed to be taken over by a dispensary.

The address being looked at is 4-8 Franklin Street, Allston, MA, 02134.

[November 3 update: A new article from Universal Hub indicates that, according to attorney Michael Ford, this would be a "total rebranding," with the spot being called Allston Hall, a tavern that offers small plates and is meant to appeal to "a wider group of patrons" than that of the old Mary Ann's.]

Paddy's Lunch in Cambridge to Host Pigpen's BBQ Popup

A neighborhood dive bar in Cambridge that has been serving drinks to locals for nearly 90 years will be serving food (at least for today) as well.

A message sent by Leah Klein of City Living Boston indicates that Paddy's Lunch on Walden Street will be hosting a popup starting at 4:00 PM featuring Pigpen's BBQ, with a Facebook events page indicating that pulled pork and brisket sandwiches will be offered until they run out. Paddy's, which first opened back in 1934, has been known over the years as a place to get a drink but has rarely offered food; whether popups will continue to bring the addition of food to the bar on at least a semi-regular basis is not known just yet, so stay tuned for updates.

Update: The Lucky Dog in Beverly Is Open Once Again After Pausing Operations for Part of the Winter

A North Shore dive bar whose roots date back nearly 100 years is shutting down for part of the winter.

According to a source, The Lucky Dog is closing for now, with a Facebook post from the Cabot Street watering hole saying the following:

Starting [yesterday] The Lucky Dog will be PAUSING operations, until certain restrictions are lifted and we are past the recent spike in covid cases. On top of wanting to keep everyone safe, current guidelines are causing us to waste too much money that would be better off saved for the early spring. Thank you to everyone that kept us going this far. We WILL be back soon. Stay in touch & stay safe.

Pictures on the post show signs indicating that this is a winter break, though it is not known when exactly the bar might open back up again.

The website for The Lucky Dog says that the place has been "serving since the end of prohibition" (with a note underneath saying "probably during") while also calling itself a "five star dive bar."

The Model Cafe in Allston Is Now Serving Bar Pizza

A neighborhood bar in Allston that has been around for nearly 90 years is now serving a regional food that is typically found south of Boston.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, the Model Cafe on N Beacon Street is now offering bar pizza, with a Facebook post from the place indicating that they started serving bar pies this past Friday. The introduction of bar pizza appears to be in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the fact that bars can only be open if they serve food made on-site, and the Model Cafe has reportedly not been open since the pandemic began.

The Model Cafe, which first opened back in 1932, is known in part for its cheap drinks, live music, and pinball machine.

Dispensary Given Approval to Replace Mary Ann's in Brighton's Cleveland Circle

A couple of years ago, it was reported that a dive bar that was popular with college students could end up being replaced by a dispensary. Now we have learned that these plans have taken a big step forward.

A message from Henry Santoro of WGBH indicates that a marijuana shop has been given approval to open in the Mary Ann's space in the Cleveland Circle section of Brighton, with a Boston Globe article saying that the Boston Cannabis Board has indeed voted to allow Happy Valley to open in the Beacon Street space. The Globe mentions that there has been criticism from nearby Boston College about the plan, with former Boston police commissioner Bill Evans--who is currently head of the security and police operations at BC--voicing concerns about the proposed shop at a public hearing last week, saying that it would "open the door to another drug that will impact these kids" and stating that "I'd take Mary Ann's over [the dispenary] any day."

Mary Ann's, which has been locked up and dark for awhile, is one of a few drinking spots that was taken over by the Greater Boston Bar Co. back in 2018, including The Tam in Boston's Theatre District and the Beacon Hill Pub, the latter of which is reportedly being replaced by a high-end restaurant.

Pratty's CAV in Gloucester Reopens

A couple of months ago, it was reported that a longtime dive bar on the North Shore had closed down because of updated rules about what constitutes a restaurant during the coronavirus crisis. Now we have learned that the place has opened back up with changes made that allow it to be back in operation.

According to a Facebook post, Pratty's CAV in Gloucester is open once again, with the video shown mentioning that their "business has been changed maybe forever....until things get back to normal, we will be following all of the state's guidelines including food will be ordered for every person, masks will be worn at all times standing including while you play pool & darts." The Parker Street watering hole had shuttered in early August on the heels of the Baker administration saying that a bar cannot "masquerade" as a restaurant by offering only pre-packaged or manufactured foods instead of food that is prepared on-site, which meant at the time that a place such as Pratty's would presumably have to wait until Phase 4 to reopen, which might not happen until 2021.

Pratty's is a local hangout that has been in business since 1986.

Pratty's CAV in Gloucester Has Closed for Now, Apparently Due to Updated Rules About Massachusetts Bars

A decades-old dive bar on the North Shore has shut down--at least for now--and it appears that the updated rules about Massachusetts bars had something to do with it.

According to a Facebook post from the place, Pratty's CAV in Gloucester closed its doors over the weekend, with the note saying that the decision was made "In light of the Governor's announcement [on Friday.]" It seems that the announcement that the Parker Street bar is referring to is that a bar cannot "masquerade" as a restaurant by offering only pre-packaged or manufactured foods instead of food that is prepared on-site, which means a place such as Pratty's would presumably have to wait until Phase 4 to reopen--and Phase 4 might not happen until a therapeutic or a vaccine is in place. (The bar does offer some limited food options, however, though it is not known if those food options would be enough to keep the place open.)

A comment within the Facebook thread does seem to leave the door open for a possible return for Pratty's, saying that they wouldn't be able to reopen "Until there is a cure vaccine or significant treatment to move us to phase 4," though it isn't known if they definitely plan to return at that point.

Pratty's, which first opened back in 1986, is mainly a local hangout with pool, darts, and trivia.

Mt. Auburn Grill in Watertown Is Reopening

Early this month, it was reported that a decades-old suburban dive bar was up for sale and that its future was uncertain. Now we have learned that it will be returning.

According to Carolyn Stella, who is a member of the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, the Mt. Auburn Grill in Watertown is reopening, with a post within the You Know You're From Watertown If...... page showing that the "For Sale by Owner" sign is down and a new sign says that it plans to open back up on July 8. It isn't known if the bar now has a new owner or if it will remain under the same ownership, so keep checking back for updates.

As mentioned in an earlier article, the Mt. Auburn Grill first opened its doors back in 1978.

Mt. Auburn Grill in Watertown Is Up for Sale

It looks like a decades-old suburban dive bar is for sale.

According to a source, the Mt. Auburn Grill in Watertown is on the market, with a picture sent of the storefront of the eating and drinking establishment showing a "For Sale by Owner" sign in one of the windows. The bar, which Manta says was established in 1978, has offered pub grub and classic American fare over the years, including steak and seafood items, pizza, and pasta dishes.

A Long-Closed Dive Bar in Brighton Continues to Pretend to Be Open During the Pandemic

While a number of restaurants and bars in the Boston area remain open for takeout/delivery as the coronavirus crisis continues, a Brighton bar is using social media to say that it is planning to do the same, though there happens to be one small problem--it hasn't been open in years.

According to a source, Hogan's Run is stating on its Facebook page that it is looking into offering hot dogs and more for curbside pickup, with a recent post indeed saying that "We're working with our vendors to offer take out during these trying times. Coming this week we plan to offer Hot Dogs, Beer and Scratch Tickets to go - curbside pickup!" The post goes on to say that "My nephew shared his Netflix info with us and honestly if you order some take out, we will share with you too. Netflix don't look into this." The dive, which had been located on Lincoln street until early 2014 when it was replaced by the Lincoln Bar and Grill (which closed last month), is also posting an events page for April 17, 2021 when the Dropkick Murphys are scheduled to play at the long-closed bar.

Hogan's Run has been putting up gag posts every now and then since closing down, including one from 2017 when it was claiming to be looking to hire interns who would be expected to "come away with a much deeper understanding of the industry and perhaps even a few tips from our regulars regarding scratch tickets and Keno."
