Drifters Kitchen and Bar Is Replacing Idle Hour in Quincy

A new dining and drinking spot is on its way to Quincy, replacing another restaurant that has been in operation for six years--and the new place will feature a unique twist on a regional style of pizza.

According to a source (Casey Doyle), Drifters Kitchen and Bar is planning to open in the city's downtown area, taking over the space where Idle Hour has been since the summer of 2018. An article from the Patriot Ledger says that the upcoming spot will feature classic American fare while a raw bar will likely be offered as well, and its "flagship" will be bar pizza, but instead of being the traditional round 10-inch pizzas known throughout the South Shore, they will be 12-inch pizzas with a thinner crust and cut into squares.

Will Falaro of the Broadway Restaurant Group in South Boston is the owner of Drifters Kitchen and Bar, working with business partners Andrew Moccia (also from the Broadway Restaurant Group) and Nick Palermo, Michael Johnson, and Evan Harrington of the Liberty Tavern in Quincy.

The address for Drifters Kitchen and Bar (and Idle Hour) is 1464 Hancock Street, Quincy, MA, 02169. Its Instagram page is at https://www.instagram.com/driftersquincy/

[February 13, 2025 update: According to an Instagram post from the place, Drifters opens today.]

(Tiger Den is open from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM Wednesday through Friday.)

For Pizza Opens in Medford Square

A new spot that offers their own take on a beloved South Shore food item has opened a few miles north of Boston.

Eater Boston is reporting that For Pizza is now open in Medford Square, taking over the space on High Street that had been home to GNP House of Pizza. The website for the eatery says that "Our pizza is most similar to south shore bar pizza, but with our own twists (and improvements:)," with the thin-crust pizza being cooked in lightly-oiled pans "for an almost slightly caramelized taste."

Bar pizza is mainly found south of Boston, with very few options for it west and north of the city; one place not too far from Medford that offers it is Hot Box, which is located at Bow Market in Somerville, and also offers North Shore-style roast beef sandwiches.

The address for the new For Pizza is 51 High Street, Medford, MA, 02155. Its website is at https://www.forpizza.com/

Boss Bah Pizza Is Opening in South Braintree Square in the Former Yogurt Bar Space

A new dining spot that features a South Shore staple is on its way to a space that had been home to a frozen yogurt shop.

A check on the space this week indicates that Boss Bah Pizza is planning to open in South Braintree Square, moving into the space on Washington Street that had been home to The Yogurt Bar. We have been told by Richard Nuzzo of Little Richie's Antiques (which is just down the road on Hancock Street) that a website for the place is up, with a check on the site indicating that it may be a takeout bar pizza place, saying "Boston South Shore Bar Pizza – Just as great without the wait!" and "Boston South Shore Bar Pizza at its best….without the bar."

Currently, most establishments that serve bar pizza south of Boston are either bars or full-service restaurants, with a couple of exceptions being Ultimate Pizza in Easton and Crisp in Walpole, which both tend to focus at least in part on takeout.

The address for Boss Bah Pizza in South Braintree Square is 915 Washington Street, Braintree, MA, 02184. Its website can be found at https://bosssbah.com/

The Model Cafe in Allston Is Now Serving Bar Pizza

A neighborhood bar in Allston that has been around for nearly 90 years is now serving a regional food that is typically found south of Boston.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, the Model Cafe on N Beacon Street is now offering bar pizza, with a Facebook post from the place indicating that they started serving bar pies this past Friday. The introduction of bar pizza appears to be in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the fact that bars can only be open if they serve food made on-site, and the Model Cafe has reportedly not been open since the pandemic began.

The Model Cafe, which first opened back in 1932, is known in part for its cheap drinks, live music, and pinball machine.

The Alumni Is Returning to Quincy

photo of bar pizza from the Alumni.
A legendary name in the bar pizza world is returning to its hometown.

According to City of Quincy consultant and publicist Kerry J. Byrne, the Alumni is opening back up in Quincy, moving into a new spot on Washington Street that is adjacent to Rags Tavern and had been home to Quincy House of Pizza. Byrne tells us that the people behind Rags are actually opening the place and are currently renovating the space, which will include a small bar area.

The original Alumni Cafe first opened on Hancock Street in Quincy's Wollaston neighborhood back in 1960, closing its doors in 2013; another Alumni opened in Weymouth in 2016 and that spot has the same ownership as both Rags and the upcoming Alumni in Quincy--and they use similar Alumni recipes for their bar pizzas (Braintree Brewhouse in Braintree also serves Alumni-style pies).

The address for the new location of the Alumni in Quincy is 379 Washington Street, Quincy, MA, 02169.

A "Bar Pizza Bandit" Is Helping Feed First Responders in Quincy

Like many communities south of Boston, the city of Quincy is known in part for its bar pizza, and a mystery person has been purchasing a huge number of them for local first responders.

According to City of Quincy consultant and publicist Kerry J. Byrne, an unknown woman wearing a black hoodie and a ball cap has walked into Rags Tavern on Washington Street three times over the past couple of weeks and ordered $200 in bar pizza each time, with the first delivery going to the Quincy Police Department, the second going to the Quincy Fire Department, and the third being sent to EMTs at Brewster Ambulance. Courtney Rego, who is manager of Rags, says that "I've seen her in here before, but I don't know who she is....Either way, we're happy to be a part of her effort to feed local first responders and delighted to know that there are so many great people out there working to help our neighbors on the front lines of the battle against Coronavirus."

Byrne tells us that the three orders amount to approximately 25 bar pizzas each, or 75 pizzas in total that have gone to first responders in the city.

S6 in Quincy Center Is Closing

A bar that gets its name for a fallen police officer--and which is known in part for its version of a legendary pizza--is shutting down to make way for ongoing development in the immediate area.

According to Kerry Byrne of KJB Trending Hospitality, S6 in Quincy Center is closing its doors, with an article from the Patriot Ledger saying that the building in which the Hancock Street watering hole is housed will be torn down to make way for a new road that connects Burgin Parkway to a soon-to-open parking garage. The bar is going to be closing on Tuesday, September 10, which is the 13th anniversary of the death of Quincy police officer James Cochrane, who was the brother of S6 owner Eddie Cochrane, and whose badge number gives the bar its name. (James Cochrane, who was a member of the police department's motorcycle unit, was killed in a motorcycle crash while off-duty.)

In addition to being a drinking spot that gives a nod to James Cochrane's service and that of other first responders, S6 has been one of several places to go for a special type of bar pizza over the years; its recipe is the same one used at the now-closed Alumni Cafe in Quincy's Wollaston neighborhood (a new location of Alumni can now be found in Weymouth) along with Rags Tavern nearby and Braintree Brewhouse in Braintree. The pizza at the old Alumni had been considered by some to be the best of its kind in Eastern Massachusetts.

The address for S6 is 1550 Hancock Street, Quincy, MA, 02169.
