McGuiggan's Pub and The Patio at McGuiggan's in Whitman Are Being Sold

The people behind a drinking spot and an adjacent restaurant in the southern suburbs of Boston are selling both places.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, McGuiggan's Pub and The Patio at McGuiggan's in Whitman are being sold, with a Facebook post saying the following:

It is with very mixed emotions that we announce our decision to sell McGuiggan's Pub and The Patio at McGuiggan's. A lot of thought and consideration went into making this difficult decision. After almost 15 years in business, our family feels that the timing is right for us to start our next adventures- which include the start of a new family and retirement....McGuiggan's Pub and The Patio at McGuiggan's will continue to be in operation into October (final date tbd), when the change of ownership will begin its smooth transition. At that time, the restaurants will close for a very short amount of time and will reopen as two new restaurants. We are pleased to share that the new owners plan to keep on as many members of the current staff that wish to be part of the new restaurants!.... The new owners are established restaurateurs, and we believe that their vision for the restaurants will be an exciting and successful endeavor for Whitman.

The post does mention that gift cards for either place will be honored for up to a year after the new restaurants open.

Waikiki House in Whitman Is Closing

A Chinese takeout spot in the southern suburbs of Boston is shutting down.

According to a source, Waikiki House in Whitman is closing its doors, with the eatery apparently looking to shutter sometime in the middle of January. The dining spot, which resides in a strip mall near where Route 18 and Route 27 meet, mostly offers Chinese-American fare to go, including a variety of combo specials.

Our source did not give a reason for the upcoming closure of Waikiki House, nor is it known what might go into the space; if we find out more, we will post an update here.

The address for Waikiki House is 682 Bedford Street (Route 18), Whitman, MA, 02382.

[January 15, 2023 update: According to a source, Waikiki House is now closed.]

Danvers, Framingham, Marblehead, Melrose, Peabody, Somerville, and Whitman Set Up Stricter Rules for Restaurant Workers and Customers

At least seven more communities in the Greater Boston area have set up stricter rules when it comes to getting takeout from restaurants, joining a number of others in the region that have also put such orders into place.

According to several sources, both customers and restaurant workers in Danvers, Framingham, Marblehead, Melrose, Peabody, and Whitman are now required to wear face masks or other forms of protective face coverings, with customers having to do so when going inside an establishment to pick up food. In addition, Somerville's ruling goes into effect on Wednesday and applies to both indoor and outdoor public spaces, though there will be a one-week grace period, according to the official order.

These cities and towns are just a few of an ever-growing list of communities instituting rules that go beyond the simple recommendation of wearing masks by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, including Abington, Beverly, Braintree, Brookline, Everett, Lynn, Medford, Quincy, Revere, Salem, and Swampscott.

Massachusetts restaurants and bars continue to be under a shutdown of sorts where they are only allowed to offer takeout and/or delivery due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Jamie's Grille & Pub in Whitman Is Closed for Now; Exact Status Unknown

What was once a trio of restaurants and bars south of Boston is down to none remaining for now, as its sole location is closed for at least the time being.

According to a couple of sources, Jamie's Grille & Pub in Whitman is shuttered, with a Facebook post seeming to confirm this, showing a dumpster at the site and the place appearing to be locked up and dark. Multiple calls placed to the Bedford Street spot during business hours go to a voicemail that has apparently not been set up, though a check on its website shows the Whitman location still being up.

A location of Jamie's in North Scituate was destroyed in a fire in the fall of 2017, and while there has been talk of it being rebuilt, it has not yet returned. In addition, the Braintree location--which was called Jamie's Grill 63--closed down last summer and has since been replaced by Crossroads Pub.

The address for Jamie's Grille & Pub in Whitman is 769 Bedford Street, Whitman, MA, 02382. The website for Jamie's can be found at https://www.jamiespub.com/

Christo's to Go! Is Opening in Whitman

Last month we reported that another landmark restaurant in the Boston area was going to be closing, though there was talk of the folks behind the Greek dining spot opening at least one new place. Now we have confirmed that this will indeed be the case.

According to a Facebook post from Christo's in Brockton, a new spot called Christo's to Go! will be opening in Whitman, with an expected opening of February for the eatery, which will be located on Route 18. Earlier we had mentioned that the family behind Christo's was also thinking of opening a new restaurant in another location, though it does not appear that there is any new information on this right now.

[March 17, 2014 update: The Whitman Times mentions that Christo's to Go! is hoping to open within the next month or so, with the article also saying that the takeout spot will sell soup, Greek salads, salad dressing, prepared meals, pizza, and desserts, with fried foods and sandwiches eventually on the way as well.]

[July 18, 2014 update: Christo's to Go! has still not opened, but it appears that progress is being made, as a Twitter poster says that the sign is now up for the place (this has been confirmed by another source). The poster also says that the exact address is 785 Bedford Street, Whitman, MA, 02382.]

[October 21, 2014 update: According to a Twitter post (and confirmed by the Enterprise), Christo's to Go! is now open.]

The original Christo's, which is on Crescent Street in Brockton, will close its doors on December 31 after being in business for nearly 50 years. In addition to this spot, a number of other well-known restaurants have either closed or announced their closings over the past few months as well, including Anthony's Pier 4 on the Boston waterfront, the Hilltop Steak House in Saugus, Chez Henri in Cambridge, Market in Boston, Turner Fisheries in the Back Bay, and UpStairs on the Square in Harvard Square.

The address for this new takeout spot in Whitman is: Christo's to Go!, 785 Bedford Street, Whitman, MA, 02382.
