Tavern in the Square to Open Locations in Quincy, Norwell, and North Andover

A growing local group of dining and drinking spots has big expansion plans, with three more coming to the local area while two others are opening a bit further away as well.

According to an Instagram post from the business, Tavern in the Square is planning to open locations in Quincy, Norwell, and North Andover, joining a number of others in the Greater Boston area and beyond. In addition, the Burlington location is being renovated while two additional new outlets will be coming to Dartmouth and Seekonk.

Tavern in the Square first started out in Cambridge's Central Square a bit more than 20 years ago, with the chain offering classic American fare along with beer, wine, and cocktails. Its website can be found at https://www.taverninthesquare.com/

Juni Is Opening in Quincy Center

A brand new omakase spot is getting ready to open a few miles south of Boston.

According to an article from Boston Uncovered, Juni is on the verge of opening in Quincy, moving into a space on Hancock Street on the northern edge of Quincy Center. A Masslive article mentions that the restaurant is planning to open on Thursday, August 6, with both articles indicating that the place will feature 12-course meals for $69 per person.

Omakase spots are typically high-end sushi places with "chef's choice" tasting menus; a few found locally include Wa Shin, Momi Nonmi, O Ya, 311 Omakase, and Uni.

Gennaro & Son in Quincy Is Closing

A longtime Italian restaurant south of Boston is going to be shutting down.

According to a source, Gennaro & Son in Quincy is closing its doors this weekend, with a Facebook post from the Blanchard Road dining spot saying the following:

In December of 1994, we opened our doors as Gennaro's Eatery. Many years later, we changed our name to Gennaro & Son — because our son Anthony was already putting in more hours than the two of us combined, and we wanted his name on the door, right alongside ours. Since then, we've built something we never could have imagined. A life time of cherished /memories. Friendships that have lasted decades. Regulars who feel like family....After many years of hard work, we've decided it's time for Gerry to take the break he's earned, so he can focus on his health and well-being. So we've made the difficult decision to close Gennaro & Son. We will be open our normal hours from Tuesday, August 4th through Saturday, August 8th....From the bottom of our hearts — thank you for 31+ years of friendship, trust, and love. 16C in Quincy Is Closing

A restaurant south of Boston that is known in part for its steak tips and pizza--and which is owned by the niece of a well-known local restaurateur--is shutting down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, 16C in Quincy is closing its doors in late December, with a Facebook post from the Cottage Avenue dining spot showing a multi-page note from owner Kerri Lynch Delaney that concludes with the following:

Thank you for sharing your stories, your milestones, your laughter, and even your hard days with us. You've filled these walls with life and helped make this place feel like home....But this isn't goodbye. You'll still see me around Cottage Ave at Kilroy's! Come say hi, grab a cocktail, a French toast cupcake, or maybe even a coffee (stay tuned on that one!). Before we officially say farewell at the end of December, come in for one last meal, one more laugh, one more broccoli Caesar! Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for everything!

16C first opened in 2016, offering classic American and New American fare, including the original Quiet Man steak tips (The Quiet Man was a bar in South Boston). Kerry is the niece of Barbara Lynch, who once was behind such places as Menton, Drink, Sportello, The Butcher Shop, B&G Oysters, and No. 9 Park, all of which were in Boston.

Yin Ji Chang Fen Opens in North Quincy

A chain of Chinese restaurants that dates back approximately 70 years has expanded to a space just south of Boston.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Yin Ji Chang Fen is now open in North Quincy, moving into a space on Billings Road. The poster mentions that  Ji Chang Fen is a restaurant chain from Guangzhou that serves traditional Cantonese dishes and rice rolls, while its website says that it was founded in the 1950s and it features "the traditional Rice Roll, well-known in the province of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao."

Based on their website, it appears that three locations of Yin Ji Chang Fen can be found in New York City, but this is apparently the first to open in New England.

Quickway Japanese Hibachi to Open in Quincy Point

A growing group of Japanese restaurants is expanding to the Greater Boston area, with a location on its way to a strip mall a few miles south of the city.

According to a source, Quickway Japanese Hibachi is planning to open in Quincy Point, moving into a space at Point Crossing where Route 53 meets Route 3A. Based on its other locations (mostly in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Washington D.C.), the new eatery will likely be a fast-casual spot that features hibachi along with sushi, bento boxes, poke bowls, and more.

Quickway Japanese Hibachi started out in 2012 in Gaithersburg, MD.

Seoule to Open in North Quincy

A brand new fusion restaurant is on its way to a space just south of Boston.

According to a source, (Sarah Wu), Seoule is planning to open in North Quincy, with photos sent indicating that it will be moving into a space on Billings Road a few storefronts east of Hancock Street. The signs out front show that the upcoming dining spot will feature Korean-French cuisine (though a menu has not been seen as of yet), and it isn't known when it might open, so stay tuned for any updates as they come in.

Chaji Creamery in Quincy's Wollaston Neighborhood Is Closing

An ice cream shop with Asian influences that is located just south of Boston is shutting down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Chaji Creamery in Quincy is planning to close its doors, with a Facebook post from the Newport Avenue business saying the following:

Dear Friends and Loyal Customers, After much thought and with a heavy heart, we've decided to permanently close the doors of Chaji Creamery. This chapter has been filled with sweet memories, laughter, and community—moments we will forever cherish. As a small business, your support meant everything. Whether you stopped in for a scoop, shared kind words, or recommended us to a friend, we are endlessly grateful. You helped make our dream a reality, and for that, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Though the shop is closing, the memories we've made with you will always remain. Somenya in Boston's Chinatown Is Expanding, Opening a New Location in Quincy's Wollaston Neighborhood

A Japanese restaurant in downtown Boston that is known in part for its noodle dishes is expanding to a new location south of the city.

According to a source (via an Instagram post from @newenglandsign), Somenya in Chinatown is planning to open in the Wollaston section of Quincy, with the address mentioned indicating that it may be taking over the Great Chow space on Beale Street. Based on its Hudson Street location, the new restaurant will likely be offering udon noodles along with rice bowls and appetizers.

The Chinatown location of Somenya debuted in the fall of 2023.

Chilacates Plans to Open in Quincy

It looks like a growing local group of Mexican restaurants is expanding to a space just south of Boston.

According to a source, Chilacates is planning to open in Quincy, with a message from the business to our source confirming what the source had told us a few weeks ago. It appears that the new location could be moving into the former E String Violin Shop space at 1358 Hancock Street in the downtown area, though this has not been completely confirmed as of yet.

Once the new outlet of Chilacates opens, it will join others in Jamaica Plain (two), Boston's West End, the South End, Mission Hill, Roslindale, South Boston, Brighton, Brookline's Coolidge Corner, Cambridge's Central Square, East Cambridge, and Chestnut Hill.

Cava Plans to Open in the Former La Paloma Space in Quincy

Earlier this week, it was reported that a Washington, D.C.-based group of fast-casual Mediterranean spots was looking to expand to a space south of Boston, and now we have learned that another outlet is in the works as well south of the city.

According to multiple sources along with an article in the Patriot Ledger, Cava is planning to open in Quincy, moving into the old La Paloma space on Newport Avenue between Wollaston and North Quincy. Once it opens, the new dining spot will join others in Boston, Cambridge, Chelmsford, Dedham, Framingham, Hanover, Hingham, and Mansfield.

Another location of Cava may be coming to the site on Union Street in Braintree that had once been home to Motel 6, but those plans are in their very early stages.

Gina's Lebanese Cuisine Opens in Quincy

A new dining spot that features Middle Eastern food has opened on the South Shore.

According to a poster within the Quincy Is Everything Facebook group page, Gina's Lebanese Cuisine is now open in Quincy Point, moving into a space on Route 3A a few blocks east of where it meets Route 53. The menu for the new spot--which focuses on takeout but has some limited seating--including such options as stuffed grape leaves, falafel, beef kabab, hummus, spinach pie, baba ganouj, chicken shwarma, baked kibbeh, and more.

Ena's Bar and Lounge Opens in the Former Maggy's Lounge Space in Quincy

A new dining and drinking spot has come to Quincy, and it replaces a restaurant and bar that closed at the beginning of the pandemic.

According to a source, Ena's Bar and Lounge is now open on Washington Street in Quincy Point, taking over the space where Maggy's Lounge had been. The website for the new place says that it is "a culinary gem specializing in authentic Vietnamese and global cuisine" while also mentioning that it is "a place to socialize and enjoy a variety of drinks and entertainment." The menu for Ena's includes such items as wings, oysters, egg rolls, grilled squid, shrimp papaya salad, sea conch salad, garlic fried rice and roti quail, glazed salmon, and shaking beef with vegetables.

Maggy's Lounge first opened in 2013, taking over the space where My House had once been.

Acapulcos Mexican Family Restaurant & Cantina in Quincy Is Closing; May Reopen in New Location

A small local group of Mexican restaurants is getting a bit smaller, as its closest location to Boston is shutting down, though it could be reborn in a new space.

According to its Facebook page, Acapulcos Mexican Family Restaurant & Cantina in Quincy will close on January 12, with one of the posts saying the following:

...the city of Quincy will be taking over the building we're located in for the development of a park. While this marks the end of an era for us at this location, we are actively seeking a new home within Quincy in hopes of continuing to serve our beloved community.

The Quincy location of Acapulcos first opened 18 years ago, offering such items as burritos, enchiladas, tacos, nachos, fajitas, and margaritas; other locations can be found locally in Beverly, Franklin, Milford, and Norwood.

Masons Steakhouse Opens in Quincy

Earlier this year, it was reported that a new restaurant was planning to open within an historic space in Quincy, and now we have learned that it is up and running.

According to posts on its Facebook page, Masons Steakhouse is now open on Hancock Street in the downtown section of the city, with the place being an upscale dining spot that features New American fare and which is run by restaurateur Jimmy Liang of the JP Fuji Group (the new place is not part of that group). The two-story restaurant takes over the space that had been home to The Masonic Temple, which dated back to 1926 and was destroyed in a fire in 2013.

Boston Market in Quincy Has Closed

A restaurant chain that got its start in the Boston area has all but disappeared from the local landscape, as what appears to be its last location inside Route 128 has shut down.

According to a source, Boston Market in Quincy is no longer in operation, with a check on the website for the company seeming to confirm this as the Granite Street restaurant is no longer listed. With the closing of the Quincy location, there are apparently no more Boston Markets within Route 128, while one can still be found inside Route 495 (in Brockton).

Boston Market first started out in Newton as Boston Chicken back in the mid-1980s, with its headquarters moving to Colorado in the 1990s and eventually changing its name to Boston Market.

Drifters Kitchen and Bar Is Replacing Idle Hour in Quincy

A new dining and drinking spot is on its way to Quincy, replacing another restaurant that has been in operation for six years--and the new place will feature a unique twist on a regional style of pizza.

According to a source (Casey Doyle), Drifters Kitchen and Bar is planning to open in the city's downtown area, taking over the space where Idle Hour has been since the summer of 2018. An article from the Patriot Ledger says that the upcoming spot will feature classic American fare while a raw bar will likely be offered as well, and its "flagship" will be bar pizza, but instead of being the traditional round 10-inch pizzas known throughout the South Shore, they will be 12-inch pizzas with a thinner crust and cut into squares. 

Will Falaro of the Broadway Restaurant Group in South Boston is the owner of Drifters Kitchen and Bar, working with business partners Andrew Moccia (also from the Broadway Restaurant Group) and Nick Palermo, Michael Johnson, and Evan Harrington of the Liberty Tavern in Quincy.

La Paloma in Quincy Is Closing

A longtime Mexican restaurant just south of Boston is shutting down.

A Facebook post from the place this morning confirms some of the chatter going around social media last night, that La Paloma in Quincy is closing its doors, with the post saying the following:

It is with heavy hearts that we are announcing that La Paloma will be closing our doors for good on June 29. We have been blessed to serve our community for the past 41 years. We have made a lot of great connections, memories and friends along the way through good times and bad. Michael and Stephen would like to thank our staff for their dedication and hard work throughout the years. We are also requesting that if you have any unused gifts cards please use them in the upcoming weeks. We have decided to retire and spend more time with our families. Thank you all for your years of support and encouragement. Michael Walsh and Stephen Dwyer.

La Paloma has been known in part for such dishes as its chimichanga platters, fajitas, and combination plates, while also serving a variety of margaritas and tequilas.

Update: IHOP in Quincy Has Closed, Will Reopen in New Space Nearby

[Ed note: This article was updated on June 13 to reflect the fact that the restaurant will be reopening in a new space.]

Last summer, it was reported that one of a handful of pancake house locations in the Greater Boston area was slated to be torn down to make room for new development, and now we have learned that it has shuttered.

According to a source, IHOP in Quincy has closed and is being cleared out, though the website for the chain continues to have the location up. The closure of the Parkingway restaurant means that the only remaining locations on the South Shore are in Braintree an Plymouth, with a handful of other locations being found elsewhere in the Greater Boston area.

The Wheelhouse Diner in North Quincy Is Closing

A diner just south of Boston that has been around since the 1940s is closing its doors. 

According to multiple sources, the Wheelhouse Diner in North Quincy is shutting down, with the news coming on the heels of a dispute between restaurant owner LeeAnn Vieira McDonough and the new landlord of the property; McDonough says the following in a Facebook post:

So today was our last court date. I know many people wanted me to fight to stay here as long as possible and I understand this place means a lot to a great number of people. However, I have decided to close June 30th. The reality of the situation is the longer I fight this the further down the road I am pushing off the inevitable. In the meantime, the condition of the building being 80 years old is deteriorating....It is a money pit that I didn't mind spending money on when I was in it for the long haul. However, any additional money spent is now debt that I will never recover.

McDonough does hint in the note that she is looking to open a restaurant in a new location, though it isn't known if it would be another version of the Wheelhouse Diner (in the post, she states that "I do plan on moving on. You will see me again in a new location").

An article in the Patriot Ledger mentions that Ciahua Chen, who is principal of Hancock Realty Trust LLC, bought the property early last year and has been attempting to evict McDonough since last October with the pans being to put up a multistory structure with a diner on the ground floor, based on information from Helen Shiner of Shiner Group Realtors in Quincy.
