Leonardo's Bar Ristorante to Open in West Roxbury

A new Italian restaurant is on its way to a Boston neighborhood, and it has a family connection to a familiar name.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Leonardo's Bar Ristorante is planning to open in West Roxbury, moving into the space on the VFW Parkway that had been home to Mission on Fire, and before that, Sofia's, Vintage, and Fontaine's. A job post within the Zip Recruiter website indicates that Leonardo Testa, who is the son of restaurateur Vinny Testa, is behind the upcoming dining spot, saying that "He has all his father's recipe's and has updated all of them to today in 2026. Many of his father's old favorites are here plus many new ones." The listing also says the following:

We are a restaurant reminiscent of the family-style Italian restaurants found in lower Manhattan, Brooklyn from the 1940's with modern cooking techniques and flavors. We welcome our guests with open arms, lavishing attentive service, along with the familiar, comforting Southern Italian specialties. Abundant portions for all but "family-style" dining we offer for any size party. We specialize in sharing all our food. Our atmosphere is with rich woods and decorative interiors with red and blacked tablecloths; hand painted murals, photos and Italian artifacts cover the walls. Music from the big band era fills out the atmosphere with memories of yesterday. Everyone will feel right at home.

The address for the upcoming Leonardo's Bar Ristorante is 1430 VFW Parkway, West Roxbury, MA, 02132.

Gennaro & Son in Quincy Is Closing

A longtime Italian restaurant south of Boston is going to be shutting down.

According to a source, Gennaro & Son in Quincy is closing its doors this weekend, with a Facebook post from the Blanchard Road dining spot saying the following:

In December of 1994, we opened our doors as Gennaro's Eatery. Many years later, we changed our name to Gennaro & Son — because our son Anthony was already putting in more hours than the two of us combined, and we wanted his name on the door, right alongside ours. Since then, we've built something we never could have imagined. A life time of cherished /memories. Friendships that have lasted decades. Regulars who feel like family....After many years of hard work, we've decided it's time for Gerry to take the break he's earned, so he can focus on his health and well-being. So we've made the difficult decision to close Gennaro & Son. We will be open our normal hours from Tuesday, August 4th through Saturday, August 8th....From the bottom of our hearts — thank you for 31+ years of friendship, trust, and love. We will cherish every one of you always. With all our love, Gerry, Jane & Anthony

Gennaro & Son is known in part for such options as toasted ravioli, antipasto, chicken marsala, stuffed peppers, eggplant parmigiana, bolognese, shrimp scampi, and pizza, while also featuring a wide variety of desserts.

The address for Gennaro & Son is 12 Blanchard Road, Quincy, MA, 02169. Its website can be found at https://gennaroseatery.com/

Real Italian Gusto in Medford Has Closed Permanently; Team Behind Ebisuya Japanese Market Taking Over the Space

Earlier this week, it was reported that an Italian restaurant north of Boston appeared to have closed. We have now confirmed this, while also discovering who will be taking over the space.

A Facebook post from the restaurant confirms that Real Italian Gusto in Medford has indeed closed, with the note saying the following:

Dear friends, after 11 years of cooking, welcoming, laughing, and sharing moments together, we have made the very difficult decision to close our restaurant. This choice was not easy. This place has been our home, and all of you have been our extended family. Your support over the years has meant more to us than words can express....Today, we close this chapter to pursue new projects and new paths.

The post from the High Street dining spot goes on to say that the people behind the shuttered Ebisuya Japanese Market--which was also in Medford--will be taking over the space, saying that "they will share more details soon." (Ebisuya Japanese Market closed last year, though their other spot--Ebisuya Japanese Noodle House--remains open in Malden.)

Tre Monte Restaurant and Bar in Boston's North End Is Closed; Exact Status Unknown

The Boston location of a pair of Italian restaurants is locked up and dark, and it isn't known what the future holds for the place.

According to a source, Tre Monte Restaurant and Bar in the North End is closed, while a call placed to the Salem Street dining spot indicates that the phone is out of service. There is no indication as to why the place is shuttered, though our source did send us a picture of the exterior showing a sign for a real estate company in one of the windows, so it appears that the restaurant may be gone for good.

The North End location of Tre Monte first opened in 2018, taking over the space where Limoncello 2 had once been, and before that, Urban Cantina; the Woburn location of Tre Monte remains in operation.

The address for the now-closed Tre Monte Restaurant and Bar in the North End was 76 Salem Street, Boston, MA, 02113. The website for the business is at https://tremonterestaurant.com/

Buitoni Spaghetti Bar to Open in Boston's Kenmore Square

A brand new Italian restaurant with an old name is going to be coming to Boston.

According to an article from Boston Magazine, Buitoni Spaghetti Bar is planning to open in Kenmore Square, moving into the space on Commonwealth Avenue where Blue Ribbon Brasserie had been, and before that, Eastern Standard (which now resides within a nearby space at the Fenway Center development). The article states that Tuscan Brands (Tuscan Kitchen, Sorella) is behind the upcoming dining spot, which gets its name from a pasta restaurant in Manhattan's Times Square in the 1940s and 1950s, and that the new restaurant will get its inspiration from that long-gone place, being a retro spot that Max Faro (who is senior project manager of hospitality and development for Tuscan Brands) says will have a "time-gone-by Italian immigrant vibe....It's going to have one-pound meatballs, fresh spaghetti being made right in front of you all night long." If all goes as planned, Buitoni Spaghetti Bar will open in 2027.

The address for the upcoming Buitoni Spaghetti Bar in Kenmore Square is 528 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA, 02215.
