Yin Ji Chang Fen Opens in North Quincy

A chain of Chinese restaurants that dates back approximately 70 years has expanded to a space just south of Boston.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Yin Ji Chang Fen is now open in North Quincy, moving into a space on Billings Road. The poster mentions that  Ji Chang Fen is a restaurant chain from Guangzhou that serves traditional Cantonese dishes and rice rolls, while its website says that it was founded in the 1950s and it features "the traditional Rice Roll, well-known in the province of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao."

Based on their website, it appears that three locations of Yin Ji Chang Fen can be found in New York City, but this is apparently the first to open in New England.

The address for Yin Ji Chang Fen is 60a Billings Road, Quincy, MA, 02171. The website for the U.S. locations of the chain is at https://www.yinji-usa.com/

The Wheelhouse Diner in North Quincy Is Closing

A diner just south of Boston that has been around since the 1940s is closing its doors.

According to multiple sources, the Wheelhouse Diner in North Quincy is shutting down, with the news coming on the heels of a dispute between restaurant owner LeeAnn Vieira McDonough and the new landlord of the property; McDonough says the following in a Facebook post:

So today was our last court date. I know many people wanted me to fight to stay here as long as possible and I understand this place means a lot to a great number of people. However, I have decided to close June 30th. The reality of the situation is the longer I fight this the further down the road I am pushing off the inevitable. In the meantime, the condition of the building being 80 years old is deteriorating....It is a money pit that I didn't mind spending money on when I was in it for the long haul. However, any additional money spent is now debt that I will never recover.

McDonough does hint in the note that she is looking to open a restaurant in a new location, though it isn't known if it would be another version of the Wheelhouse Diner (in the post, she states that "I do plan on moving on. You will see me again in a new location").

An article in the Patriot Ledger mentions that Ciahua Chen, who is principal of Hancock Realty Trust LLC, bought the property early last year and has been attempting to evict McDonough since last October with the pans being to put up a multistory structure with a diner on the ground floor, based on information from Helen Shiner of Shiner Group Realtors in Quincy. (Construction wouldn't start for three to five years.)

The address for the Wheelhouse Diner in North Quincy is 453 Hancock street, Quincy, MA, 02171. Its website is at https://www.wheelhousediner.com/

OneZo Is Opening in North Quincy

by Marc Hurwitz

Last month, we reported that a small group of Taiwanese restaurants known in part for their crispy fried chicken would be expanding to a second Boston-area location. Now we have learned that another Taiwanese spot is opening next door--and this one will be focusing on bubble tea that has flavored bubbles.

According to a source (Sarah Wu), OneZo is opening in North Quincy, with a picture sent to us showing that it will be located next to an upcoming location of Cheers Cut. Based on its website and information from our source, the Billings Road tea shop will feature bubble tea that includes freshly-made tapioca balls (which are also known as pearls or boba) in a variety of different flavors. This will be only the fifth location of OneZo to open in the United States, with three others being in California and one in New York City.

It is not known if there is an ownership connection between OneZo and Cheers Cut; if we do find information on any possible connection, we will post an update here.

The address for this new bubble tea shop in North Quincy is: OneZo, 19 Billings Road, Quincy, MA, 02171. The website for the business can be found at https://www.onezo.us

[May 23 update: Our source above tells us that OneZo has soft-opened in North Quincy, with a Yelp post confirming this--and based on other Yelp pictures, it appears that OneZo and Cheers Cut have at least a loose connection to each other.]

According to a Twitter post from @QuincyTweets, Cheers Cut is opening on Billings Road, with a tweet from @ahGwenYee saying that it is moving into a space that had been home to an insurance company. Coffee Break Cafe in North Quincy Has Closed

Last week, we reported that a cafe with three locations south of Boston had opened a fourth shop nearby. Now we have learned that the group of shops actually remains at three, as one of the other locations closed over the past week or so.

According to one of our readers, the Coffee Break Cafe on Atlantic Street in North Quincy is no longer in operation, with a Facebook post from the group of places confirming this, indicating in the post that the owners of the space have opened their own coffee shop there called (according to a Yelp poster) Coffee Pot. This location of the Coffee Break Cafe had actually been located within another business called Atlantic Market Liquors, which had previously been Richard's Market Pizza.

Other locations of the Coffee Break Cafe can be found on Old Colony Avenue in Wollaston and Parkingway in Quincy Center, along with a brand new shop on Central Avenue in Milton.

The address for the now-closed Coffee Break Cafe in North Quincy was 247 Atlantic Street, Quincy, MA, 02171. The website for all four locations can be found at http://www.coffeebreakcafe.net/

Update: Basta Pasta in North Quincy May Be Replaced by Apartments; A Move Is Possible

[Ed note: This article was updated several times to reflect new information given, including the possibility that the restaurant could move (though this now seems unlikely).]

It looks like the future of an Italian restaurant just south of the Boston line may be in question.

According to an article in the Patriot Ledger, a proposal to tear down Basta Pasta in North Quincy and replace it with a four-story apartment building is apparently going to be looked at by the city later this month, and it appears that the owner of the Hancock Street dining spot (Bledar Huxhallari) is also behind the plans for the apartments. The eatery first opened in 2009, replacing another restaurant called Tullio's; another location of Basta Pasta--which is the original--can be found on Western Avenue in the Cambridgeport section of Cambridge. (Huxhallari also operates a third place called Buco Trattoria, which is located on Summer Street in Boston's Fort Point neighborhood.)

The article for the North Quincy location of Basta Pasta is 150 Hancock Street, Quincy, MA, 02171. The website for both locations is at: http://bastapastacambridge.com/

[February 28 update: A check on the place indicates that Basta Pasta has shut down, though it is not yet known if it will be demolished to make way for an apartment building.]

[November 23 update: The Patriot Ledger mentions that the people behind the now-closed Basta Pasta in North Quincy are hoping to find a new space in the neighborhood, but they apparently need to find a new location quickly, as they have to file paperwork by the end of the month in order to renew their liquor license--and there needs to be an address for the license.]

[December 28 update: Hopes for a new location of Basta Pasta in North Quincy seem to have been dashed, as Wicked Local Quincy reports that the city licensing board has voted to take away its license. (The article says that the owners didn't show up for the board meeting and the board voted "with little discussion" to cancel the license.)]

Quincy Dynasty in North Quincy Has Closed for Renovations; Status Unknown

A Chinese restaurant located a bit south of the Boston line is closed for the time being, and it is not known for sure what kinds of changes may be coming to the space.

According to several posts within a couple of Facebook groups, Quincy Dynasty in North Quincy is shuttered, with a sign on the door of the Billings Road eatery apparently saying that a sushi bar may be added to the space and a note on its website saying it is closed for a "remodeling." No one has been able to confirm whether the restaurant will reopen as Quincy Dynasty or will become a completely new space, and phone calls to the dining spot have gone unanswered. As soon as we find out what will be happening to the place, we will post an update here.

Quincy Dynasty is a spot that our sister site (Boston's Hidden Restaurants) has featured as an under-the-radar place to go for both traditional Chinese and Chinese-American fare. A link to the review can be found below:

The address for this restaurant in North Quincy is: Quincy Dynasty, 49 Billings Road, Quincy, MA 02171. Its website is at http://www.quincydynastychinese.com/
