Chaji Creamery in Quincy's Wollaston Neighborhood Is Closing

An ice cream shop with Asian influences that is located just south of Boston is shutting down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Chaji Creamery in Quincy is planning to close its doors, with a Facebook post from the Newport Avenue business saying the following:

Dear Friends and Loyal Customers, After much thought and with a heavy heart, we've decided to permanently close the doors of Chaji Creamery. This chapter has been filled with sweet memories, laughter, and community—moments we will forever cherish. As a small business, your support meant everything. Whether you stopped in for a scoop, shared kind words, or recommended us to a friend, we are endlessly grateful. You helped make our dream a reality, and for that, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Though the shop is closing, the memories we've made with you will always remain. Thank you for being part of our journey. From now until September 1st, we'll only have Milk Tea and Ube flavors available. If you'd like to stock up, stop by for pints while supplies they last! With heartfelt gratitude, Chaji Family

In addition to its milk tea and ube soft serve and sundae options, Chaji Creamery has also offered such items as milkshakes, fruit tea, matcha, iced coffee, and black and jasmine tea.

Somenya in Boston's Chinatown Is Expanding, Opening a New Location in Quincy's Wollaston Neighborhood

A Japanese restaurant in downtown Boston that is known in part for its noodle dishes is expanding to a new location south of the city.

According to a source (via an Instagram post from @newenglandsign), Somenya in Chinatown is planning to open in the Wollaston section of Quincy, with the address mentioned indicating that it may be taking over the Great Chow space on Beale Street. Based on its Hudson Street location, the new restaurant will likely be offering udon noodles along with rice bowls and appetizers.

The Chinatown location of Somenya debuted in the fall of 2023.

TKK Fried Chicken in Quincy's Wollaston Neighborhood Has Closed; Kung Fu Tea Remains in Operation

A local outlet of a Taiwanese chicken chain has shut down, though the bubble tea chain who it shared its space with remains open for business.

According to a tweet from @FloydPerkinson, TKK Fried Chicken in the Wollaston section of Quincy is no longer in operation, with the post indicating that Kung Fu Tea is still open in the Beale Street space, while the website for the chicken chain has indeed removed the Quincy location. The two concepts had also shared a space within the Hong Kong Supermarket/Super 88 food court in Allston, but TKK Fried Chicken also left that space while Kung Fu Tea remains there as well.

TKK Fried Chicken and Kung Fu Tea first opened in Quincy's Wollaston Neighborhood in the summer of 2019.

P&D Indian Street Food Opens in Quincy's Wollaston Neighborhood

A brand new Indian dining spot has opened in Quincy, and it appears to have taken over part of the space that an adjacent Chinese restaurant once had.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, P&D Indian Street Food is now open in the city's Wollaston neighborhood, with the poster saying that "Great Chow reduced its footprint and it appears this took up the space they gave up." The Instagram page for the eatery shows such Indian fast food/street food items as samosa pav, panipuri, bhelpuri, vada pav, and dabeli.

Mr. Pickled Fish to Open in Quincy's Wollaston Neighborhood

A new restaurant with a rather interesting name is on its way to Quincy, and it looks like it will be replacing a Chinese eatery.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Mr. Pickled Fish is planning to open in the city's Wollaston neighborhood, with a picture posted (and a note given) indicating that it will apparently be taking over the former Yummy Cafe space on Hancock Street. Very little is known about Mr. Pickled Fish at this point in time, so keep checking back for updates.

Yummy Cafe was known in part for its Cantonese cuisine, including Hong Kong-style seafood dishes.

Dagu Rice Noodle, Banh Mi Boston to Open in Quincy's Wollaston Neighborhood

It looks like a couple of Asian restaurants are on their way to a neighborhood that already has a number of Asian eateries.

According to food/drinks writer and publicist Kerry Byrne, Dagu Rice Noodle and Banh Mi Boston are both planning to open in the Wollaston section of Quincy, with the former being a noodle shop while the latter will be a Vietnamese spot. Both storefronts are currently papered over and being worked on, and it is not yet known when they might open, so stay tuned for updates.

Both Wollaston and neighboring North Quincy are increasingly known for their many Asian restaurants, with both being seen as a dining alternative to Boston's Chinatown.

Dagu Rice Noodle will be at 663 Hancock Street while Banh Mi Boston will be at 716 Hancock Street.

[July 12, 2021 update: A Yelp page for the place indicates that Banh Mi Boston is now open, offering a variety of sandwich options.]

Newcomb Farms in Quincy Has Closed Due to Purchase of Its Space; Hopes to Reopen Next Year

A Quincy mainstay for comfort food has shut down due to its space being bought, though it appears that the restaurant could be returning if all goes well.

According to a source, Newcomb Farms in the Wollaston section of Quincy is now closed, with a Facebook post from the Beale Street space saying the following:

Thank you everyone for 55 + years of business at the Wollaston Beale street location. We have enjoyed all of you and your families. We hope we have given you many memories over the years. At the current time the entire block of stores have been purchased and we were the last to sell our property. We plan on coming back to reopen in 2021 at the same store front.

The note refers customers to its other location on Route 28 in Milton, which remains in operation.

Newcomb Farms in Quincy has been known in part for its family-friendly atmosphere and its breakfast plates along with its classic American fare.

Yaowarat Road Opens in Quincy's Wollaston Neighborhood

A new Thai restaurant with a rather interesting name has opened in a section of Quincy that has become home to countless Asian dining spots.

According to City of Quincy consultant and publicist Kerry J. Byrne, Yaowarat Road is now open in the city's Wollaston neighborhood, with the Beale Street eatery getting its name from one of the main roads in the Chinatown section of Bangkok. Byrne tells us that the new restaurant serves Hainan-style Thai fare (Hainan is the most southern part of China), with options including such items as scallion pancakes, sriracha wings, pork congee, duck rice soup, beef stew with noodles, pork feet stew, mango smoothies, and Thai iced tea.

Both Wollaston and neighboring North Quincy are home to a wide variety of dining spots featuring Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Taiwanese, Japanese, and Korean fare.

TKK Fried Chicken, Kung Fu Tea Are Opening in Quincy's Wollaston Neighborhood

A decades-old Taiwanese chicken chain will be teaming up with a bubble tea chain to open a shared space in Quincy.

Eater Boston is reporting (via a Twitter post from @siisterspooky) that TKK Fried Chicken and Kung Fu Tea are opening in the city's Wollaston neighborhood, with the former being the first location in New England and the latter joining a handful of other shops in the Greater Boston area. The post says that TKK Fried Chicken started out in Taiwan in 1974 and currently has only one location in the United States--in Manhattan's Flatiron area--while two others are being planned for the Philadelphia area and one for Texas. The chain serves such items as fried chicken, wings, tenders, and chicken sandwiches. (Kung Fu Tea offers such items as classic tea, milk tea, slush, punch, and yogurt.)

Brewery Being Proposed for Quincy's Wollaston Neighborhood

Last week, it was learned that a new brewery and taproom may be coming to Quincy, and now it looks like plans for a brewery space are also in the works, though it is not known whether this means there could be one or two breweries within the city.

According to an article from Wicked Local, Eric Zhang of Bayfort Holdings is proposing a new development that would include 75 apartments and retail space, the latter of which could become home to a brewery, taproom, and restaurant. The post states that the building--which would be four stories high in the rear and seven stories high in the front and would include a two-story garage--would replace retail structures at 21-29 Beale Street, which means that Koi Japanese Cuisine, which is at 21 Beale Street, could be affected. (Houses at 55 Cushing Street and 65 Chapman Street would also possibly be torn down.) A public meeting on the proposal for the development will take place on May 30 at Quincy High School.

As mentioned in an earlier article, Break Rock Brewing is planning to open somewhere in Quincy, though no specific location has been given as of yet. (And as mentioned earlier, Quincy is the largest city in New England that does not currently have a brewery.)

Momo Cafe Opening in Quincy's Wollaston Neighborhood

A new dining spot is in the midst of debuting in the heart of a Quincy neighborhood, and one of the items it features is donuts.

According to a Twitter post from @melgotserved, Momo Cafe has soft-opened in the city's Wollaston area, with the Hancock Street eatery apparently taking over the space where New Lucky Star convenience store had been. Based on the tweet as well as pictures shown within a Google page for the place, the new spot offers donuts, croissants, cheesecake, lemon tarts, coffee pudding, coffee, and tea, and a few of the donuts that are available include chocolate bacon, dried pork, matcha (green tea), and milk chocolate.

Based on the Google page for Momo Cafe, it appears that the place is open from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM seven days a week.

Winsor Dim Sum House Replacing Crystal Jade in Quincy

A Chinese and Vietnamese restaurant in Quincy that moved into the space where a renowned bar pizza spot had once been has shut down and a new spot is on the way.

According to posters on the Quincy is Everything Facebook group page, Crystal Jade in the Wollaston section of the city is closed, with one poster saying that the people behind the Hancock Street dining spot had to come before the licensing board concerning the status of the license, which has indeed been confirmed by the city's website. The poster indicates that the closing may be due to the health of the owner, but this has not yet been confirmed as of yet, while it appears that a new restaurant is moving into the space.

Crystal Jade first opened in late 2014, taking over the space where the Alumni Cafe had been; a new location of the Alumni plans to open in Weymouth very soon [ed note--now open], and while it will be under different ownership, the same bar pizza recipe as that of the original Alumni is expected to be used there.

[August 15 update: The Patriot Ledger mentions that a new restaurant called Winsor Dim Sum House is hoping to take over the former Crystal Jade space; it is not known if there is any connection to Winsor Dim Sum Cafe in Boston's Chinatown, as no connection could be made online between the two spots. (As soon as we find out more, we will post another update here.)]

[October 21 update: According to several sources, Winsor Dim Sum House is now open, and it is indeed connected to Winsor Dim Sum Cafe in Chinatown.]

The Clam Box in Quincy to Reopen for the Season on March 4

A waterside seafood spot that has been around for nearly 50 years is getting ready to open back up.

According to its website, The Clam Box on Wollaston Beach in Quincy plans to reopen for the season on Friday, March 4, once again offering longtime favorites such as fried clams, fish and chips, popcorn shrimp, lobster rolls, and much more. Its regular hours during the summer are 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM seven days a week, though it is not yet known whether the eatery will have limited hours as the season begins (we will post an update as soon as we find out).

The Clam Box, which first started out in 1968, is a restaurant that our sister site (Boston's Hidden Restaurants) has featured as a place to go for both seafood dishes and classic American fare. The review can be found at this link:

Last Brigham's in Arlington Heights Getting Ready to Officially Disappear from the Landscape

[Ed note: This article has been corrected to show that there is only one shop remaining that still has the Brigham's signage, and it appears to be in the midst of changing over. (Thanks to @jackie_cain for the help on this.]

A couple of years ago, we reported that a local chain of ice cream parlors was going to lose its brand name with each store being forced to find new suppliers. Now we have learned that one shop still has its signage up (based on a recent check on the place along with some Facebook posts), but that it appears to be on the verge of changing its name--though some chatter indicates the name has already changed even though the Brigham's sign remains--with earlier reports saying it might be called either "Digumm's" or "Dighams." Earlier reports also mentioned that the shop had been looking to switch over to ice cream from Sugar Maple Creamery in Wilmington, though it is not known for sure if this indeed is the case. (As soon as we get more updates on the exact status of the place, we will post an update here.)

[August 17 update: A check on the place over the weekend indicates that the Brigham's in Arlington Heights is now officially called Digumm's, with signage up out front.]

Brigham's, which first started out in 1914 as an ice cream and candy shop in Boston's Post Office Square, filed for bankruptcy in 2009 and closed all but a handful of locations at that point in time; most of the remaining spots switched over to new names in 2013 once parent company HP Hood of Lynnfield decided to stop selling its ice cream in bulk quantities. (Brigham's ice cream can still be found in convenience stores and supermarkets.)

Crystal Jade Is Opening in the Former Alumni Cafe Space in Quincy

It appears that an Asian restaurant is opening in Quincy, moving into the space where a drinking spot known for its bar pizza used to be.

The Patriot Ledger is reporting that Crystal Jade is looking to open on Hancock Street in the Wollaston section of the city, taking over the former Alumni Cafe spot. (The Alumni Cafe had shuttered last summer with "Closed for Renovations" signs posted out front, though sources told us right off the bat that it was gone for good.) It looks like Crystal Jade would focus at least in part on Chinese and Vietnamese fare, though little else is known about the place at this point in time.

[December 22 update: According to a poster within the Chowhound site (and confirmed by the restaurant), Crystal Jade is now open in Quincy, and it looks like it is indeed focusing on Vietnamese and Chinese fare.]

The Alumni Cafe had been in business since 1960, according to the article.

The China Restaurant and Sports Bar Is Opening in Quincy

A new restaurant is on its way to the Wollaston neighborhood of Quincy, and it will apparently feature both Chinese food and pub grub.

According to its Facebook page, The China Restaurant and Sports Bar is getting ready to open on Hancock Street, with a note on the page saying that it will be "coming soon." Based on an earlier article in the Patriot Ledger, it looks like the folks behind the Golden China Restaurant and Sports Bar in Canton are behind the upcoming spot, which, if true, would indicate that the menu at the new restaurant may feature a mix of Chinese fare, pizza, and bar food.
