Juni Is Opening in Quincy Center

A brand new omakase spot is getting ready to open a few miles south of Boston.

According to an article from Boston Uncovered, Juni is on the verge of opening in Quincy, moving into a space on Hancock Street on the northern edge of Quincy Center. A Masslive article mentions that the restaurant is planning to open on Thursday, August 6, with both articles indicating that the place will feature 12-course meals for $69 per person.

Omakase spots are typically high-end sushi places with "chef's choice" tasting menus; a few found locally include Wa Shin, Momi Nonmi, O Ya, 311 Omakase, and Uni.

Tasting Counter at Aeronaut Brewing Company in Somerville Is Closing, But It May Continue On

An award-winning dining spot that focuses on tasting menus is losing its space, though it appears that it could continue on in some form.

According to a source who is part of the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group, Tasting Counter at Aeronaut Brewing Company in Somerville is shutting down, with an email sent from the business saying the following:

It is with heavy hearts to announce that we must permanently close Tasting Counter by the end of this month....Our landlord, Aeronaut Brewing Company, notified us a few weeks ago that they will not renew our lease, a decision that will forever close the door to Tasting Counter...as difficult as this realization is, we've been given the gift of freedom. As we grapple with the news and impact this closure will have on our family, our staff, our guests, and our community, one thing remains certain – Tasting Counter WILL continue!....Just as Tasting Counter was always more than just a restaurant, the next iteration of Tasting Counter will expand on the work we started here. We’ve been given the green light to pursue our dreams, and we sincerely hope that you, as our guest and community supporter, will join us to continue the work we’ve started.

Tasting Counter first opened in 2015, receiving much in the way of accolades over the years including Boston Magazine ranking it #7 in the region in its latest list of best restaurants; in the post, BoMag says that chef/owner Peter Ungár offers "a rare mix of technical wizardry and artistic fire."

[June 20 update: According to a press release, Tasting Counter did close earlier this month, but it opened back up on June 19 and will also be open today and tomorrow from noon to 6:00 PM to say goodbye while also selling off its equipment and products. The release also hints that a new venture is on the way, saying that "we...need to purge in order to lighten the load so we can launch this next restaurant project."]

Tasting Counter Is Opening in Somerville

[Ed note: This article was updated on June 23, 2014 to reflect new information given, including a home for the eatery.]

A new restaurant is on its way to the Boston area, and this one will focus on tasting menus.

Eater Boston is reporting that Peter Ungár of The Dining Alternative is looking to open a 20-seat place called Tasting Counter somewhere in or around the city. The article says that Ungár, whose current company sets up private dining events, plans to have the dining spot include a chef's counter where guests are seated, along with an open kitchen. Diners would have to get tickets in order to eat at the restaurant, which would get half of its ingredients from food producers in Massachusetts and would only offer wines that are naturally produced, according to EB.

It appears that Tasting Counter could be open by late this year or early in 2014.

[August 8 update: An email sent to us today from The Dining Alternative indicates that Peter Ungár is still looking for a space for Tasting Counter, with the note mentioning that "six potential sites have been analyzed and rejected due to various reasons." Stay tuned...]

[June 23, 2014 update: A new article from Eater Boston mentions that Tasting Counter will be opening within the Aeronaut Brewing Company space on Tyler Street in Somerville, which is just west of Union Square.]

[May 22, 2015 update: Boston Magazine states that Tasting Counter will be able to seat 20 guests at a time for its three-course lunch and nine-course dinner tasting menus, with lunch costing $50 to $60 and dinner costing $150 to $180 (prices includes tax, gratuity, and drink pairings). The hours for Tasting Counter will be 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM Tuesday through Sunday.]

[June 18, 2015 update: DigBoston says that Tasting Counter will debut later this month within the Aeronaut Brewing Company space.]

[July 19, 2015 update: According to a note from The Passionate Foodie, Tasting Counter opens on Thursday (July 23).]
