Grotto in Boston's Beacon Hill to Close

A longtime Italian restaurant in the heart of Boston is shutting down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page (via a boston.com article), Grotto in the city's Beacon Hill neighborhood is going to be closing its doors, with a message on the website for the Bowdoin Street dining spot saying the following:

With mixed emotions, I want to share that Grotto will be closing later this summer. This has been a very difficult decision, but the time has come for a new chapter. While an exact closing date has not yet been set, our lease will expire in September, and we will keep you all up to date on our last night of service. Until then, we will continue dinner service seven days a week, from 5:00 to 9:00 PM. I hope you'll come visit us before we say goodbye. To all our incredible staff, past and present, and to everyone who has dined with us over the years: thank you. You've made Grotto the special place it has been, and I will carry those memories with me always. Scott

Grotto first opened in 2003, with the subterranean restaurant being a neighborhood spot featuring such dishes as bolognese, gnocchi, chicken parmigiana, spaghetti and meatballs, grilled beef tenderloin, and pan-roasted salmon.

The address for Grotto is 37 Bowdoin Street, Boston, MA, 02114.

89 Charles to Open in Boston's Beacon Hill

A new dining and drinking spot is on its way to Beacon Hill, and it will be taking over the space where a location of an Italian restaurant had been.

According to a post within the jobs section of the bostonchefs.com website, 89 Charles is planning to open its doors soon, saying in the listing that it will be "a small, intimate cocktail bar" that includes seating for 30 in the lounge area and another 12 at the bar while featuring "elevated small plates" along with cocktails. The address (89 Charles Street) indicates that it will be moving into the former Artu space (another location of Artu remains open in the North End), and this space had actually been the site of two proposed restaurants over the past couple of years--Nite Lite Cafe and Ono Bistro.

If all goes as planned, 89 Charles could be opening in August or September.

Nine Is Opening in the Former No. 9 Park Space in Boston's Beacon Hill

A new restaurant is on its way to downtown Boston, and it is moving into the space where one of the best-known dining spots in the city had been until closing down at the end of last year.

According to a post by Patrick Maguire within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Nine is planning to open in Beacon Hill, taking over the former No. 9 Park space on Park Street Place. A series of job posts on the culinaryagents.com site indicate that Nine will be a French fine-dining restaurant with other European influences and that it is the first spot from Nine Restaurant Group which has been established by a group of local investors. A press release mentions that Allan Rodriguez (La Neta, El Centro) is behind the restaurant while Andrew Simonich (Barbara Lynch Collective) will be Chef de Cuisine.

No. 9 Park was one of several restaurants from chef/restaurateur Barbara Lynch, with all of her dining spots now being closed including The Butcher Shop, Stir, Drink, Menton, Sportello, and B&G Oysters in Boston along with The Rudder in Gloucester. (B&G Oysters continues to say that it is closed temporarily due to flood damage which occurred during the holidays.)

The address for Nine is 9 Park St Place, Boston, MA, 02108. Its website is at https://www.ninerg.com/

[August 20 update: Eater Boston states that Nine is now open.]

Zurito Is Opening in the Former Bin 26 Enoteca Space in Boston's Beacon Hill

A few weeks ago, it was reported that an upscale restaurant and wine bar in Beacon Hill would be closing at the beginning of this month, though it was subsequently learned that a new dining spot with a connection to the restaurant was looking to open within the space. Now we have a bit more information about the proposed spot.

According to an article from Universal Hub, Zurito is indeed planning to open in the former Bin 26 Enoteca space on Charles Street, and as we learned earlier this month, Nader Asgari-Tari (who was a managing partner at Bin 26 Enoteca) would be the manager while local chef/restaurateur Jamie Bissonette is involved as well. UH says that both Bissonette and Babak Bina (who was one of the people behind Bin 26 Enoteca are the co-owners of Zurito, which plans to focus on the cuisines of the Basque region of northern Spain including sharable plates/tapas.

Bin 26 Enoteca closed on June 1 after being in business for 18 years.

The address for Zurito is 26 Charles Street, Boston, MA, 02114. Its website is at https://www.zuritoboston.com/

[November 7 update: The Boston Globe reports that Zurito officially opens today, though it has already had a soft opening for family and friends.]

Nite Lite Cafe Plans to Open in Boston's Beacon Hill

A new dining spot may be on its way to the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Boston, and its name may be familiar to those who grew up in the North End long ago.

According to a licensing hearing page within the city's website, Nite Lite Cafe is looking to open on Charles Street, with the notice saying that the proposed restaurant is seeking a beer, wine, and liqueurs license and that the manager listened is Gennaro Riccio. It is presumed that this is the same Gennaro Riccio who has been involved with a number of dining spots in the North End in the past, including Cafe Amaro, Caffe Vittoria, Florentine, and Stanza dei Sigari, and the restaurant's name is the same as a long-closed drinking spot known in part for being the site of a double murder back in the 1960s.

The address for the proposed Nite Lite Cafe is 89 Charles Street, Boston, MA, 02114.

Shah's Halal Food Plans to Open in Boston's Beacon Hill Neighborhood

A growing group of Middle Eastern restaurants whose roots are in New York City is planning to expand to not one, but two more spaces in the Greater Boston area, with one being right in the heart of the city.

According to an article from Universal Hub, Shah's Halal Food is planning to open a takeout-only location on Cambridge Street, moving into a space near Bowdoin Street on the edge of Beacon Hill. If given the green light to open (its plans were approved by The Zoning Board of Appeal this week but still needs an ok from the Boston Licensing Board), the new location would join one in Boston's Fenway/Back Bay and another in the works in Walpole, along with others on Long Island, north of New York City, Connecticut, New Jersey, and elsewhere. Beacon Hill Books & Cafe Has Opened in Boston

Three years ago, it was reported that a bookstore/cafe would be opening where a nationally-recognized restaurant had shut down, and now we have learned that it has debuted.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Beacon Hill Books & Cafe is now open on Charles Street in Boston, with an Instagram post confirming that it opened its doors this past weekend. The website for the new spot--which has taken over the space where The Hungry I had been--has a note saying "a lovingly curated selection of reads meets a warm atmosphere, pop-ups and literary events, and a full-range menu of locally sourced fare. This shop is our love letter to Boston. A spot to gather, discover, learn, and most of all, have fun. A spot for afternoon tea with friends, or where a solo adventurer can relax with a book and a bite." Beacon Hill Books & Cafe is open from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM Tuesday through Saturday and from noon to 5:00 PM on Sundays (closed Mondays).

The Hungry I first opened in 1981, receiving both local and national recognition over the years, including from TimeOut Boston, USA Today, and Zagat; it shut down in September of 2019.

Is the High Spot Deli in Boston's Beacon Hill Reopening?

It looks like a longtime breakfast and lunch spot in downtown Boston could be returning after shutting down earlier this year.

According to a tweet from @graham_morphis that was shared by WGBH state house reporter Katie Lannan, the High Spot Deli in Beacon Hill is reportedly planning to reopen in October, with confirmation apparently coming last Wednesday. We are trying to get more information on its possible reopening, including whether any changes will be coming to the place, so stay tuned for updates.

The High Spot Deli offered such items as omelets, soups, salads, sandwiches, pizza, and steak tips, with much of its clientele coming from the State House, Suffolk University, nearby offices, and Beacon Hill residents.

The address for the High Spot Deli is 10 Beacon Street, Boston, MA, 02108.

Thanks to Adam Castiglioni of the Boston Hospitality and Tourism Industry Blog for initially bringing this to our attention.

A Cat Cafe May Be Coming to Beacon Hill

Several years ago, the city of Boston saw its very first cat cafe debut, though it shut down permanently after a couple of years in business. Now it looks like another cat cafe may be on its way, with this one coming to another part of the city.

According to a message sent from local writer Megan Johnson, signs have been posted at a storefront in Beacon Hill saying that "A Sanctuary Cafe" with "coffee, books & cats" is on its way to Charles Street, with a second sign describing what exactly a cat cafe is. Based on the picture sent to us, it appears that the cat cafe might be moving into a building across from The Sevens, between Pinckney Street and Mt. Vernon Street, and the first sign mentions that the place plans to open sometime this summer.

PURR Cat Cafe, which opened on Chestnut Hill Avenue in Brighton in 2017, was a place where people could hang out with adoptable shelter cats while bringing in food or beverages; the cafe shut down in late 2019.

[October 12 update: A Beacon Hill Times article mentions that Beacon Hill resident and prospective cat cafe owner Brittany Baker talked about the cafe in a virtual abutters meeting in late September, saying that the two-story business at 80 Charles Street would include a cafe, bookstore, and an upper and lower "cat lounge" in a space that had formerly been home to a bank. Baker states that the bookstore and cafe would be free to enter and separate from the areas with cats, while the cat lounge would have 10 "resident cats" and require reservations with an hourly rate--and it wouldn't offer pet adoptions or allow customers to bring their own pets. (Thanks to Universal Hub for bringing this to our attention.)]

A trio of Greek restaurants will be expanding once again, with two more outlets on the way to Boston this spring.

The two new locations, which both plan to debut in April, will join other locations in the Fenway along with Cambridge's Central Square/MIT area and Harvard Square, though the new restaurants will not be serving alcohol.

The Beacon Hill Pub in Boston May Become the Charles Street Pub

A dive bar in Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood that changed ownership a couple of years ago may be getting a name change--and a management change as well.

According to a licensing board hearing page within the city's website, the parent company of the Beacon Hill Pub on Charles Street is petitioning to transfer the licensed business to a new owner/operator, with the proposed name of the new place being the Charles Street Pub. The notice lists the manager as Chaz Fisher, while the parent company (149 Charles Pub LLC) includes both Fisher and Kyra Deligiannides as directors/officers, according to the OpenCorporates site. Little else is known about the transfer, including any changes to the space or concept, so stay tuned for updates next week when the meeting is held.

The Beacon Hill Pub closed down in 2018 only to have the Greater Boston Bar Co. take it over and reopen the bar, which remains in operation.

The address for the Beacon Hill Pub (and the proposed Charles Street Pub) is 149 Charles Street, Boston, MA, 02114.
