Avra Estiatorio Opens at Lyrik Back Bay in Boston

An upscale Greek and Mediterranean restaurant that got its start in New York City and now has a handful of locations around the country has come to a new development in Boston.

According to multiple sources, Avra Estiatorio is now open at Lyrik Back Bay, a mixed-use space above the Mass. Pike where Newbury Street and Massachusetts Avenue meet. The new dining spot focuses in part on Greek seafood dishes, with a few options including fish soup, littleneck clams, calamari, salmon tartare, grilled octopus, sardines, sea bass souvlaki, lobster pasta, and pan-seared scallops, while also offering a variety of cocktails.

The first location of Avra Estiatorio debuted in Midtown East back in 2000.

The Federal in Waltham Has Closed

An upscale restaurant in the western suburbs of Boston that was known in part for its steak and seafood options has shut down.

According to a source, The Federal in Waltham is no longer in business, with a note on the website for the dining spot (which was also shown on a Waltham Channel Facebook post) saying the following:

We would like to thank all of our guests for their support over the last seven years. Unfortunately we have made the difficult decision to close the restaurant permanently. The current economy and ever increasing costs make it impossible to continue. We will continue operating our sister property, Stazione di Federal and will honor all outstanding gift cards there.

The Federal first opened on Tower Road within the development at the former Polaroid site in the early part of 2019, taking over the space where Flank had been.

Davio's Northern Italian Steakhouse in Braintree Has Closed

A suburban location of a local group of upscale Italian steakhouses has shut down.

According to a source, Davio's Northern Italian Steakhouse in Braintree is no longer in business, with a check on the locations page of its website confirming this as the restaurant--which was located at South Shore Plaza--has been removed from the site. Other locations in the region remain open, including at Park Square in Boston, the Seaport District, Logan Airport, Chestnut Hill, Foxboro, and Lynnfield.

The Braintree location of Davio's first opened in 2017.

Estella in Boston's Downtown Crossing Is Expanding, Opening a New Location at Patriot Place in Foxboro

An upscale restaurant in the heart of Boston that focuses mainly on New American fare will soon be joined by a second location southwest of the city.

According to an Instagram post, Estella is planning to open at Patriot Place in Foxboro, with the post (which comes from the Patriot Place IG page) saying the following:

Patriot Place is excited to announce that @estellarestaurant is coming Summer 2025! With its flagship location in downtown Boston, Estella delivers an exceptional dining experience that fuses food from various backgrounds and cultures. Estella boasts a robust menu featuring diverse pasta selections, entrees, salads, soups, appetizers, a weekend brunch menu and delicious desserts, which guests will be able to enjoy this summer as this new dining establishment officially opens in the heart of Patriot Place!

The Downtown Crossing location of Estella first opened on Temple Place in the summer of 2022, taking over the space that had once been home to 49 Social. Its website can be found at https://www.estellaboston.com/

Burton's Grill Is Opening in the Former TGI Fridays Space in Mansfield

A small local chain of upscale restaurants is opening a new location southwest of Boston, and it will move into the space where a shrinking national chain of dining spots had once been.

According to a source, Burton's Grill is planning to open in Mansfield, taking over the former TGI Fridays space at Mansfield Crossing by the corner of School Street and Route 140. A check on the Mansfield Crossing website confirms this, showing a "coming soon" page for Burton's, which currently has locations locally in Burlington, Framingham, Hingham, Lynnfield, North Andover, Shrewsbury, and Westford.

The Mansfield location of TGI Fridays closed in early 2024, and only five remain in Massachusetts today--in Boston, Everett, Methuen, Millbury, and Stoughton.

Moonstones in Chelmsford Is Closing

An upscale restaurant north of Boston is shutting down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Moonstones in Chelmsford is getting ready to close its doors, with a Facebook post from co-owner Scott Plath saying the following:

There's no easy way to say, that after 16+ years and with so many emotions, we will close our beloved moonstones in January —saying goodbye to so many incredible guests and staff - while welcoming all December reservations, including holiday functions and a final celebratory New Year's Eve Dinner with our glasses proudly raised. (Stay tuned for details right here)....Unfortunately, we have been unable to overcome unfavorable lease terms, ongoing cost increases and market conditions beyond our control. We are frustrated, sad and sorry to let this incredible restaurant close but in absence of an ideal location and greater resources we are simply unable to recapture that pre-pandemic moonstones magic, while struggling to maintain the standards demanded of ourselves through these many years.

In addition to Moonstones, Scott and Kathy Plath also run Cobblestones in Lowell (where Scott says that "numerous 'touches' of moonstones...will carry on") and they had also been behind the now-closed Stones Social in Nashua as well.

Bin 26 Enoteca in Boston's Beacon Hill Is Closing

An upscale restaurant and wine bar in Beacon Hill that is known in part for its Italian fare is shutting down.

According to an article from the Beacon Hill Times, Bin 26 Enoteca on Charles Street is closing its doors, with a note within the website of the dining spot saying the following:

After 18 years of serving guests we are opening our doors Saturday June 1st for the final time. Please join us in this moment of transition for both us and our many dear and cherished regulars alike. After a 4 decade long career, Azita Bina-Seibel is retiring to spend more time traveling the world and with loved ones and friends. We look forward to celebrating with you over this next month. Please email us any inquiries or come walk in for a seat at the bar. A deep thank you to all our many devoted regulars, and guests who have patronized Bina family hospitality group restaurants for 4 decades.

Thaiger Den Is Opening in Malden

A new upscale restaurant is opening a few miles north of Boston, and it has a connection to a nearby dining spot.

According to a source, Thaiger Den is planning to open in Malden, moving into the space on Pleasant Street that had been home to Spicy World. We have been told that the upcoming place will be a "high-end" restaurant and that the people behind Crying Thaiger, a Thai eatery on Ferry Street, will be opening the spot.

If all goes as planned, Thaiger Den could be opening a bit later this year.

Giana Restaurant + Bar Opens in South Easton

A new upscale restaurant that features American fare with global influences has come to the southern suburbs of Boston.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Giana Restaurant + Bar is now open in South Easton, moving into a space on Roosevelt Circle just north of where Route 138 and Route 123 east meet. An Enterprise News article says that the new spot offers American dishes with Italian and Asian influences including pasta, pizza, sushi, steaks, burgers, and wings, and it includes an open kitchen, a 44-seat bar, and a 40-seat patio.

Chiara in Westwood Is Closing

A casual upscale Mediterranean bistro in the southwestern suburbs of Boston is shutting down.

According to a source, Chiara in Westwood is closing its doors, as the people behind it are selling the business to a restaurant group. It looks like the dining spot will shutter sometime in early October, though no specific closing date has been given as of yet.

Chiara, which first opened nearly 18 years ago, offers such items as mussels piccata, calamari, pork chops, pan-roasted salmon, gnocchi, sirloin steak, and roasted chicken breast.

Rosa Mexicano Planning to Open in the Former Besito Space at the Burlington Mall

A small group of upscale Mexican restaurants is planning to open a second Boston-area location, and this one will replace a location of another small group of upscale Mexican restaurants.

According to a source, Rosa Mexicano is looking to open in the former Besito space at the Burlington Mall, with a page within the Simon site confirming this, while another page within burlington.org gives a bit more information on its plans, including an application, cover letter, renderings, and a site plan. If given approval to open, the new location of the dining spot will join another one in Boston's Seaport District along with several in New York City and others in New Jersey and Maryland.

Sobre Mesa Is Opening in the Former 29 Rustic Mediterranean Space in Sudbury

A brand new Mexican restaurant is on its way to the western suburbs, and it will be replacing a Mediterranean spot in what looks to be a rebranding.

According to its social media pages, Sobre Mesa is going to be opening in Sudbury, taking over the former 29 Rustic space on Hudson Road. Based on the posts (including a job post), the new place will be an upscale Mexican restaurant, and both a Facebook comment and a source mention that it has a connection to Nan's Rustic Kitchen & Market, which opened in Stow last fall and which is under the same ownership as 29 Rustic, making this a reconcepting of sorts. If all goes as planned, Sobre Mesa hopes to open a bit later this summer.

Grille 151 American Kitchen & Cocktails Is Opening in Former Hearth 'n Kettle Space in Weymouth on June 2

An upscale dining and drinking spot is getting ready to open in a South Shore space that had been home to a location of an old-fashioned family restaurant.

According to a Facebook post from the place, Grille 151 American Kitchen & Cocktails plans to open in the former Hearth 'n Kettle Space in Weymouth on June 2 for dinner service, with a menu posted from the Main Street restaurant showing such items as chilled lobster tail, steamed mussels, fried oysters, steak tartare, clam chowder, burgers, a spicy fried chicken sandwich, roasted half chicken, fish and chips, pork chops, and filet mignon, while the drinks list includes both classic and modern cocktails along with beer and wine options.

The Weymouth location of Hearth 'n Kettle, which was known in part for its hearty breakfasts and comfort food dishes, shut down last summer after being in business for 23 years; its two remaining restaurants in Hyannis and South Yarmouth remain in operation.

Benedetto in Cambridge's Harvard Square Has Closed Permanently

An upscale Italian restaurant inside a Cambridge hotel will not be reopening.

According to an article from Eater Boston, Benedetto within the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square has shut down for good, with owners Mike Pagliarini and Pam Ralston saying that the restaurant's lease is being terminated. An announcement sent out via a newsletter says the following:

As owners, we are still processing this loss of the business that for the past five years has been a tremendous source of pride and joy....For us, Benedetto has been a success story in every way. We made delicious, inspired food. We created a community that meant so much to our guests and to our team. Despite the hardships the pandemic placed on our industry, we were financially sound. We were so inspired by the way our team came together to get us through the hardest parts of the past year, and it feels so unfair that we've reached this point only to be forced to close.

Benedetto was slated to reopen later this month after being closed for the winter and part of the spring; Pagliarini and Ralston also run Giulia, a nearby restaurant on Mass. Ave. that remains in operation and which will honor Benedetto gift cards.

Update: OAK Long Bar + Kitchen in Boston's Back Bay Reopens After Being Closed for the Winter

[Ed note: This article was updated on April 2 to reflect the fact that the restaurant is open once again.]

A high-end restaurant in the Back Bay that tends to be a particularly popular spot during the holidays has closed for the time being.

According to several sources, OAK Long Bar + Kitchen within the Fairmont Copley Plaza on St. James Avenue has shut down for the winter, with a Facebook post from the place saying that "In response to the pandemic, we made the very difficult decision to temporarily close OAK Long Bar + Kitchen through the winter. We are 'hibernating' with a tentative reopening date of April 1, 2021." The upscale eatery, which replaced The Oak Room eight years ago, is one of many Boston-area spots to go into hibernation as the pandemic continues, though in this case, the hotel will remain open and the restaurant will continue to offer in-room dining service to hotel guests.

Update: Oak + Rowan in Boston's Fort Point Neighborhood Reopens After Closing for the Winter

[Ed note: This article was updated on March 29 to reflect the fact that the restaurant is open once again.]

An upscale Fort Point restaurant has reopened after shutting down for much of the winter.

According to a Facebook post from the place, Oak + Rowan on A Street closed down December 31, with a note saying that "It's a decision that we make with heavy hearts, but it is the right decision for our employees, our guests and our business to reemerge as strongly as possible in March 2021. We wish you a peaceful and delicious holiday and we send a thousand thank you's for being part of our extended family!" The temporarily closure of the restaurant comes on the heels of owner Nancy Batista-Caswell permanently closing one of her other dining spots--Ceia in Newburyport--last month, with Brine (another Newburyport spot that she runs) remaining in operation.

Oak + Rowan is one of countless restaurants to make the decision to close for part or all of the winter as the pandemic continues, leading to state and local restrictions on dining spots along with a sharp decrease in foot traffic in Boston and elsewhere.

[March 29 update: The Facebook page for Oak + Rowan indicates that it opened back up this month and is now open for dinner for dine-in, takeout, and delivery.]

Three Squares Craft Kitchen & Cocktails in Needham Has Closed

A casual upscale suburban restaurant known for its comfort food and mixed drinks has shut down permanently.

According to multiple sources, Three Squares Craft Kitchen & Cocktails in Needham is no longer in operation, with a Facebook post from the Highland Avenue spot confirming that it has indeed closed for good. Three Squares, which had been open until recently during the pandemic (and featured live music on its outdoor patio) first opened in the summer of 2013, offering such items as clam chowder, fried pickles, burgers, fish and chips, steak tips, blackened salmon, seafood fra diavolo, and more, as well as an array of beer, wine, and cocktails.

Update: Commonwealth in Cambridge's Kendall Square Reopens After Going into Hibernation for a Number of Months

[Ed note: This article was updated on May 3, 2021, to reflect the fact that the restaurant is now open once again.]

An upscale Cambridge restaurant is closing down for now, and it probably won't reopen until the coronavirus gets more under control.

According to a post within an ongoing series by Steve "Nookie" Postal in Eater Boston, Commonwealth in the Kendall Square section of the city is "going into hibernation" starting September 20, with Postal--who owns the dining spot--saying that "We are not in the best of times. Those are gone. So when it gets dark at 4:30 p.m. and it is 30 degrees with 40 mph winds whipping around Kendall and no one is working from their offices until 2021 at the earliest? Yeah, I’m all good with that." Assuming that Commonwealth remains closed until a therapeutic and/or vaccine hits the market, it is possible that the restaurant might not return until sometime in 2021, though Postal does indicate that his locations of Revival Cafe & Kitchen in Boston's Back Bay, Cambridge's Alewife area, and Somerville's Davis Square will remain open, at least for now.

Commonwealth first opened in the fall of 2013, with the place including a restaurant and market while also offering catering and having space for functions and events. [Ed note: We have been told that all of it will be going into hibernation, including the market.]

Sky Restaurant in Norwood Has Closed

A casual upscale suburban restaurant that had been serving New American fare for nearly 20 years has shut down.

According to several sources, Sky Restaurant in Norwood is no longer in business, with a Facebook post from the place confirming this, saying that "Given the challenging economic climate due to COVID-19 and the resulting uncertainty of future business, I have decided that the proper course of action is to not reopen." Sky first opened in Norwood in 2002, with a first location of Sky opening in Sudbury in 1997 and remaining in operation until 2010.

110 Grill and Evviva Trattoria Are Opening at Exchange 200 in Malden

Two local groups of restaurants that have an ownership connection will be expanding to a new mixed-use development a few miles north of Boston.

According to a press release, 110 Grill and Evviva Trattoria are both opening on the ground floor of Exchange 200 in Malden Center, with the former being a rapidly growing chain of casual upscale American restaurants while the latter is a smaller but also-growing group of Italian dining spots. The two eateries plan to debut in the complex--which will include lab/life-sciences, R&D, and office space--in mid-2021 if all goes well.

110 Grill has more than 30 locations in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, and Rhode Island while Evviva Trattoria has 4 locations in Massachusetts, though this will be the first outlet of Evviva inside Route 128.

The address for the new locations of 110 Grill and Evviva Trattoria in Malden will be 200 Exchange Street, Malden, MA, 02148.
