Pavement Coffeehouse to Open at Tufts University in Medford

A local group of coffee places will soon be opening a new location at a college campus.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Pavement Coffeehouse is planning to open at Tufts University in Medford, with a Tufts Daily article stating that it will move into the former Starbucks space within the Joyce Cummings Center on College Avenue. The article mentions that the new location of Pavement hopes to open sometime in November, joining a nine others in the Greater Boston area, including other college locations at Boston University, Lesley University and Harvard University.

Ralph's Coffee Is Opening in Boston's Seaport District

A new coffee shop is on its way to the Boston waterfront, and it has a connection to a well-known luxury designer.

According to an article from Caught in Southie, Ralph's Coffee is planning to open in the city's Seaport District, with the shop moving into a space by Seaport Boulevard and Pier 4 Boulevard. Ralph Lauren is behind the concept which will offer such options as cold brew, espresso, tea, pastries, and baked goods.

KoKo Coffee Opens New Location Next to South Station in Boston

A small local group of coffee shops has been joined by a new location that should be popular with commuters.

According to its social media along with an earlier press release, KoKo Coffee is now open on Atlantic Avenue next to South Station, with the new spot joining another by the Boston waterfront on State Street along with others on Causeway Street by North Station and L Street in South Boston. The new shop offers such options as coffee, pastries, baked goods, salads, and sandwiches.

Arwa Yemeni Coffee to Open in Brookline

A small group of Yemeni coffee shops will be opening its first Greater Boston location--and its first in Massachusetts.

According to a press release, Arwa Yemeni Coffee has reached a lease agreement with real estate firm The Hamilton Company to open on Beacon Street in Brookline, with the address indicating that it will move into a space in Coolidge Corner. An earlier Brookline News article mentions that the upcoming coffee shop will offer pastries and other bakery items in addition to coffee, and it plans to be open late on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. No opening date has been given as of yet, so keep checking back for updates.

Arwa Yemeni Coffee, which was founded in 2022, currently has ten locations in Connecticut, Illinois, Texas, and California.

Marylou's Opens in Framingham

A local chain of coffee shops whose locations are mainly south of Boston has opened a second outlet west of the city.

According to an article in the MetroWest Daily News, Marylou's is now open in Framingham, moving into a Seasons convenience store and Shell gas station on 543 Old Connecticut Path and including a drive-through window. The new location joins another in Waltham along with a number of locations in the southern suburbs of Boston, Cape Cod, and in Rhode Island.

Arwa Yemeni Coffee to Open in Brookline's Coolidge Corner

A small group of Middle Eastern coffee shops will be expanding locally, with a new Boston-area location on the way.

According to a Brookline News article, Arwa Yemeni Coffee is planning to open in the Coolidge Corner area of Brookline, moving into a space on Beacon Street. The article mentions that the 36-seat spot will offer pastries, baked goods, coffee, and tea, and it will join several locations in Texas and Illinois (the business started out in 2022 in Richardson, TX).

Blank Street Coffee to Open in the Former Twin Donuts Space in Allston, Will Keep Iconic Sign

A growing group of coffee shops and coffee carts with roots in New York City will be expanding further into the Boston area, moving into a landmark space where a breakfast and lunch spot had been for 70 years.

According to a press release, Blank Street Coffee is planning to open in Allston, taking over the former  Twin Donuts space on Cambridge Street. The Hamilton Company, a local real estate organization, will restore the neon Twin Donuts sign and the Blank Street branding will be incorporated into the sign, with Jameson Brown, Chairman and CEO of The Hamilton Company stating that "Blank Street's preservation of the iconic Twin Donuts sign really honors the long history of that property as a special place that is beloved in the community." If all goes as planned, the new location of Blank Street Coffee could open in the late spring of 2026 and it will be the eighth Boston-area location.

Twin Donuts dated back to the mid-1950s, offering such items as bagels, muffins, croissants, breakfast and lunch sandwiches, pancakes, French toast, omelets, and salads.

George Howell Coffee Opens at Lyrik in Boston's Back Bay

A small local group of coffee shops and cafes has been joined by a location within a new mixed-use development in Boston.

According to a press release, George Howell Coffee is now open at Lyrik Back Bay, an open-air plaza that is located above the Mass Pike by Newbury Street and Massachusetts Avenue in the Back Bay. The new location, which joins two others downtown along with Newtonville, Cambridge's Harvard Square, and a roastery in Acton, offers specialty coffees as well as pastries from the Rhode Island-based Seven Stars, breakfast and lunch sandwiches, toasts and more, with dessert service on the way later in the year.

Render Coffee in Boston's South End Is Closing

The original location of what had once been a small group of coffee bars is shutting down, leaving only one remaining.

According to a poster within the South End Community Board Facebook group page, Render Coffee on Columbus Avenue is planning to close on April 5, with another poster showing a photo of a sign out front saying "Coming Soon: New Bakery/Coffee Generation." Once the South End location of Render Coffee, closes, the only location left will be in Boston's Seaport District; there had also been outlets in the Financial District and Charlestown, but those are no longer in operation.

The South End location of Render first opened in 2012, taking over the space where Uptown Espresso had once been.

Cafe Reynard Opens Inside Idle Hands Craft Ales in Malden

A brand new cafe has opened just north of Boston, and it resides inside a brewery.

According to an article from Boston Magazine, Cafe Reynard is now open in Malden, moving into the Idle Hands Craft Ales space on Commercial Street. The article mentions that the new spot is, as co-owner, founder, and roaster Eddy Martinez calls it, a "trans-run, worker-owned queer cafe and coffee roaster" that in addition to coffee, also offers doughnuts at least twice a week on most weeks from Kate Holowchik of Lionheart Confections. The cafe currently operates within the brewery Monday through Thursday from 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM and on Sundays from 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM.

Tradesman Coffee Shop and Lounge Is Opening at Boston Landing in Brighton

A local restaurant group is planning to open another location of one of its concepts, and this will reside within a mixed-use development along the Mass. Pike.

According to a licensing board hearing page within the City of Boston website, Tradesman is looking to open at Boston Landing in Brighton, with the Guest Street space including various dining areas and a bar along with a seasonal outdoor patio. A page within the lendlease.com site mentions that the new location would be on the first floor of FORUM, which is a nine-story life sciences development, and it will offer an all-day menu of baked goods, sandwiches, and more while also serving coffee and espresso, beer, wine, and cocktails.

The team behind Tradesman (MNM Restaurant Group) runs three other locations in Boston along with Fin Point Oyster Bar, Amber Road and Urban Wild.

Pavement Coffeehouse Is Opening in the Former Dudley Cafe Space in Cambridge

Last fall, it was reported that the Cambridge location of a pair of cafes had shut down, and now we have learned that a local group of coffee places plan to expand into the space.

According to a Bluesky post from troysch1.bsky.social, Pavement Coffeehouse is planning to open in the former Dudley Cafe space on Massachusetts Avenue between Porter Square and Harvard Square, with a sign out front saying "coming this winter." Once it opens, the new location of Pavement will join eight others in Boston and Cambridge, while the location of Dudley Cafe in Roxbury's Nubian Square remains in operation.

La Colombe Has Apparently Closed Both of Its Locations in Boston

It looks like a Philadelphia-based group of coffee roasters and cafes has said farewell to Boston.

According to a source, both locations of La Colombe within the city are no longer in operation, with the website for the business seeming to confirm this, as the Leather District and Seaport District shops have been removed from the locations section of the site. La Colombe first opened its Atlantic Avenue outlet in 2016, with the Northern Avenue location debuting the following year.

Lêgacy Càphê Plans to Open in Dorchester's Savin Hill Neighborhood

The person behind a Dorchester coffee shop that moved to South Boston over the winter is planning to open a new coffee spot in Dorchester.

According to an article from the Dorchester Reporter, Tam Le and his business partners are looking to open Lêgacy Càphê in the Savin Hill neighborhood, moving into the former Dorchester Tire building on Dorchester Avenue. Le, whose family runs Pho Hoa on Dorchester Avenue just north of Fields Corner, opened Reign Drink Lab next to Pho Hoa in 2016, moving it to Old Colony Avenue in Southie around the beginning of the year; his new concept will offer two things that the Dorchester location of Reign didn't focus on--a food program and seating--while the space will also have an onsite roastery.

If all goes well, Lêgacy Càphê will open sometime in 2025.

Coffee Break Cafe in Hyde Park Is Closing

A local group of cafes with locations south of Boston will be closing its sole location within the Boston city limits.

According to an article from Universal Hub, Coffee Break Cafe in Hyde Park is going to be shutting down, with a Facebook post from the business indicating that January 27 is slated to be its last day in business while also saying that "We are so very grateful to have been part of this most supportive community for the past 6 years. We love our space, our staff and our devoted customers, we will miss you more than you know." It appears that shops in Quincy Center, Quincy Point, the Wollaston section of Quincy, and Milton will remain in operation.

Central Perk Coffeehouse Opens in Boston's Back Bay November 14

Several months ago, it was reported that a new coffeehouse whose name will be familiar to fans of a sitcom from the 1990s and early 2000s would be coming to Boston, and now we have learned that it is debuting this week.

A message sent to us indicates that Central Perk Coffeehouse is slated to open tomorrow (Tuesday, November 14) on Newbury Street in the Back Bay, and it is based on the fictional Central Perk Coffeehouse from the show Friends. As mentioned in an earlier article, Warner Bros. Themed Entertainment and CenPer Holdings, LLC (which includes restaurateur/celebrity chef Tom Colicchio as a partner) are behind the spot, which will be open for breakfast, lunch, and an early dinner, and it will offer food and drink including beer and wine.

Central Perk Coffeehouse Plans to Open in Boston's Back Bay

A brand new coffeehouse is on its way to the Back Bay of Boston, and its name will be familiar to fans of a sitcom that ran from the 1990s to the early 2000s. 

According to an article from People, Central Perk Coffeehouse is planning to open on Newbury Street, with Warner Bros. Themed Entertainment and CenPer Holdings, LLC (which includes restaurateur/celebrity chef Tom Colicchio as a partner) being behind it. The upcoming spot is based on the fictional Central Perk Coffeehouse from the show Friends, with the article saying that "the Boston iteration seeks to take inspiration from the original set all while operating a modern, fully-functional coffeehouse."

If all goes as planned, Central Perk Coffeehouse will open later this year.

Blue Caboose Ice Cream and Coffee to Open in East Boston

An historic railroad car just up the street from the East Boston waterfront is being converted into an ice cream stand.

According to a source, Blue Caboose Ice Cream and Coffee is getting ready to open in Eastie, with the business being run out of a refurbished caboose along the East Boston Greenway near the piers and the edge of the Jeffries Point neighborhood. An Instagram page for the business says that it will be "approaching soon," though no opening date has been given as of yet. (The latest IG post mentions that it will be selling Crescent Ridge ice cream.)

Caffe Ollo Is Opening in Waltham

A new coffee shop appears to be opening west of Boston.

According to a Twitter thread from @y2000k, Caffe Ollo is planning to open in Waltham, moving into the Cronin's building on Moody Street. The website for the upcoming spot says that it will offer coffee, tea, breakfast, and desserts, and that it will include "service with elegant music." No opening date has been given for Caffe Ollo as of yet, and the menu part of the website has not been set up yet, so check back for updates as they come in.

Jejes Coffeehouse Is Opening in Wellesley

A new spot for coffee, baked goods, and more is on its way to the western suburbs of Boston, and it will be a kosher place.

Universal Hub is reporting (via kvhkosher.org) that Jejes Coffeehouse is planning to open in Wellesley March 8, with The Swellesley Report saying that its Kosher certification means that its offerings will be accessible to kosher/halal diners. In addition to coffee made using freshly-roasted organic fair trade beans, Jejes will also offer cookies, madeleines, muffins, and scones, along with organic tea.
