Burke's Alewerks in West Newton Has Closed

A brewery and taproom that moved to a new location earlier this year has shut down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Burke's Alewerks in West Newton is no longer in business, with a Facebook post from the place saying the following:

It is with regret and sadness that I announce the end of Burke's Alewerks. We poured our last pint this past week. I am forever grateful for all the support, laughter, music, and friendship that we all shared together. If you walked through our doors and shared a pint with us, we are grateful. There are so many wonderful memories and experiences and it was a truly worthwhile and most excellent journey! Slainte

No reason has been given for its closure, nor is it known if owner Brian Burke has any future plans for brewing.

Burke's Alewerks moved into West Newton in January, taking over the space on Washington Street where a location of The Local had been. Previously, the brewery had been located in Hanover.

The address for the now-closed location of Burke's Alewerks in West Newton was 1391 Washington Street, West Newton, MA, 02465.

Burke's Alewerks Opens in West Newton

Last year, it was reported that a South Shore brewery and taproom was planning to expand to a space west of Boston, and now we have learned that it has opened, though it is actually a move rather than an expansion.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Burke's Alewerks is now open in West Newton, with a Facebook post from the business indicating that it debuted last weekend--and posters have told us that the Hanover location has closed so this is indeed a move contrary to what we had heard in the late winter of 2022. The new spot takes over a location of The Local, which continues to operate locations in Waltham, Wayland, and Wellesley.

Expect to find a mix of European and American-style ales at the new Burke's Alewerks in West Newton along with several wine options, while food offerings for now include pretzels and pizza.

The address for the new location of Burke's Alewerks in West Newton is 1391 Washington Street, West Newton, MA, 02465. The website for the business is at https://burkesalewerks.com/

Burke's Alewerks in Hanover Plans to Open New Location in West Newton

A brewery and taproom on the South Shore is expanding to another location, with this one being in the western suburbs of Boston.

According to a source, Burke's Alewerks in Hanover is taking over the space in West Newton that had been home to The Local Kitchen & Drinks, with a Facebook post from the place saying the following:

We couldn't be more thrilled to be joining this community and neighborhood and having another outlet for our beers. The timing of our opening is still to be determined, as we work through approvals, permitting and updates to the building.  We plan to open there in two phases.  Initially we'll open it as taproom-only, serving beers produced in our Hanover location.  As this space has a full kitchen in place, we will also develop and offer a taproom food menu.  Once that is operating, we will begin construction on a portion of the building in phase two and add brewing capability to that site, hopefully by mid-to-late Summer.

The original location of Burke's Alewerks offers a mix of European and American-style ales, including IPAs, a cranberry wheat beer, an Irish dry stout, a British brown ale, and a German-style Hefeweizen with blood orange.

Other locations of The Local remain in operation in Waltham, Wayland, and Wellesley.

The address for the upcoming location of Burke's Alewerks is 1391 Washington Street, West Newton, MA, 02465. The website for the business can be found at https://burkesalewerks.com/

Bluebird Bar & Wood-Fired Grill Is Opening in Former Lumiere Space in West Newton

Early last year, an award-winning suburban bistro closed its doors permanently, and now we have learned that a new dining spot is opening in its space.

According to a source, a sign is now up for Bluebird Bar at the old Lumiere space in West Newton, with the sign also saying "a wood-fired grill" underneath. A Facebook post from owner David Sardella indicates that the 88-seat spot will be opening very soon and it will have a "big-ass bar" along with a "scratch kitchen, killer cocktails and a thoughtfully curated wine list," though a menu has not been seen for the place as of yet. A Patch article from last year mentioned that Bluebird was planning to open within the space, but no information on the restaurant was available at that time.

Lumiere, which first opened in 1999, was known as a special-occasion spot featuring dishes with French and regional influences; the restaurant closed in late February of 2020.

The address for Bluebird Bar is 1293 Washington Street, West Newton, MA, 02465. Its website is at https://www.thebluebirdbar.com/

[December 1 update: A Facebook post from the place indicates that Bluebird Bar & Wood-Fired Grill opens at 5:00 PM today.]

Blue Salt Restaurant Is Opening in the Former La Tate Mexican Restaurant Space in West Newton

A new dining spot is on its way to the western suburbs of Boston, moving into a space that had been home to a Mexican eatery.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Blue Salt Restaurant is planning to open in the space in West Newton where La Tate Mexican Restaurant was until closing in 2019. Very little is known about the upcoming Washington Street spot, as its website seems to have placeholder pages in it right now, though the "About Us" section mentions that the restaurant apparently plans to offer "classics like burger and steak" along with "Eastern-European inspired dishes." An earlier licensing meeting agenda page within the city's website says that Igor Burukhin will be the manager, which is apparently the same Igor Burukhin who runs Boston Gourmet Foods/Igor Catering; as soon as we find out more about Blue Salt, we will post an update here.

The address for Blue Salt is 1255 Washington Street, West Newton, MA, 02465. The website for the restaurant is at https://www.bluesaltrestaurant.com/ while the website for Boston Gourmet Foods/Igor Catering is at https://www.igorcatering.com/

[August 26 update: According to a tweet from @deedubya, Blue Salt is now open, with its menu showing such options as borscht, Brazilian seafood stew, baked brie, blintzes, shish kabob, lamb chops, and carbonara.]

Frank's Brick Oven Pizza Opens at the Back of The Local in West Newton

A brand new pizzeria has opened in the western suburbs of Boston, and it is located within another restaurant that is getting ready to reopen.

According to a source (Young-Ho Yoon), Frank's Brick Oven Pizza is now open in back of The Local Kitchen & Drinks in West Newton, with the website for the pizzeria saying that "our dream was to do a scratch old school pizza place with high quality ingredients, however we never found the time. Recently with the shutdowns and the fragility of 'dine in' restaurants we decided this was our time to turn a negative into a positive." Walace Benica, who is corporate chef of The Local restaurants (including locations in Waltham, Wayland, Wellesley, and Woburn), is involved with Frank's as well, while the pizzeria offers takeout and delivery with pickup taking place at the front area of The Local.

The West Newton location of The Local plans to open back up for takeout on February 9 after being closed for awhile--and briefly being for lease until a deal was worked out with the landlord.

The address for Frank's Brick Oven Pizza (and The Local) is 1391 Washington Street, West Newton, MA, 02465. The website for Frank's can be found at https://www.franksbrickovenpizza.com/

The Local in West Newton Is Reopening After Being Up for Lease

[Ed note: This article was updated on November 19 to reflect the fact that the restaurant now plans to reopen.]

For a short time, it looked like a group of neighborhood restaurants known in part for its small plates and New American fare appeared to have shut down its original location, but now there seems to be a ray of hope.

According to a source (Young-Ho Yoon), The Local in West Newton is shuttered, with a picture sent showing a "For Lease" sign out front. A check on the website for the group of dining spots shows that the Washington Street space has been removed from the locations section, though locations in Waltham, Wayland, Wellesley, and Woburn remain in operation. A source now tells us, however, that the West Newton location hopes to open back up even though it had been for lease, with a Patch article saying that owner Frank Santo was able to make a deal with the landlord and that it could be reopening as soon as December.

The West Newton location of The Local first opened in 2008, with the place being seen as a gastropub-style eatery.

The address for The Local in West Newton was 1391 Washington Street, West Newton, MA 02465. The website for the other locations of The Local can be found at http://liveeatlocal.com/

Flora's to Open in West Newton

A new wine bar appears to be on its way to West Newton, and the people behind it come from a few well-known restaurant names in Boston.

According to a Craigslist job post, Flora's is planning to open on Washington Street, with the page saying that the co-owners come from Mei Mei in the Fenway area and the now-closed Towne Stove & Spirits and Liquid Art House, both of which were in the Back Bay. Little other information has been given on the upcoming 20-seat spot, though an address shown on a page within amysangiolo.com indicates that the restaurant will be taking over the space where Coney Island Ice Cream had been until closing over the summer.

The address for this planned wine bar in West Newton is: 1284 Washington Street, West Newton, MA, 02465.

[December 31 update: A post within the jobs section of bostonchefs.com mentions that Flora's will offer a "simple cheese & charcuterie menu" to go with its wine options, while also serving craft beer and cocktails as well.]

[February 6, 2020 update: According to a Facebook post from the place, Flora's hopes to open its doors late this month. (Thanks to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page for bringing this to our attention.)]

Lumiere in West Newton Is Closing

An award-winning suburban bistro will soon be closing its doors.

The Tables section of The Boston Globe reports that Lumiere in West Newton is planning to shut down for good, with chef/partner Jordan Bailey saying that "We've been there 20 years, and the restaurant has run its course. The market has changed quite a bit as far as upscale stuff goes in the suburbs....It's hard to get out of that box." No specific closing date has been given for the Washington Street dining spot, though it appears that it could say farewell sometime in February.

Lumiere, which first opened in 1999, has been known for being a special-occasion spot featuring dishes with French and regional influences. Previous owner Michael Leviton sold the place to Bailey approximately four years ago, with Bailey being the restaurant's chef de cuisine at the time.

The address for Lumiere is 1293 Washington Street, West Newton, MA, 02465.

La Tate Mexican Restaurant Is Replacing Shing Yee in West Newton

by Marc Hurwitz

A suburban Chinese restaurant has shut its doors, and yet another Mexican spot is on its way, taking over the space.

According to a source within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Shing Yee in West Newton is no longer in operation, with a sign out front saying that La Tate Mexican Restaurant is moving into the Washington Street space. The note out front also refers Shin Yee customers to Rice Valley, another Chinese eatery that is affiliated with the restaurant and is located on Washington Street a short distance east in Newtonville. This comes on the heels of news that a number of other Mexican restaurants are on their way to the Greater Boston area, including Chimichurri's in West Medford, El Potro in Chelsea, Mercado Taco Bar in Boston's Faneuil Hall area, Pink Taco in the Seaport District, El Tacuba Cocina & Tequila Bar in Medford, Tequila's Grill & Cantina in Wakefield, Pancho's Cantina in Wilmington, and Achilito's Taqueria in Jamaica Plain.

Shing Yee which first opened in West Newton approximately 15 years ago, was a casual spot that featured mostly Chinese-American fare along with cocktails.

The address for the now-closed Shing Yee (and new La Tate) is 1255 Washington Street, West Newton, MA, 02465.

Sweet Tomatoes in West Newton Has Reopened

A West Newton pizza shop that was the site of a fatal SUV crash last year is open once again.

According to an article from CBS Boston, Sweet Tomatoes on Washington Street has reopened, with the place giving out free slices to city police officers, firefighters, and EMTs on Monday, while a Facebook post says that "We would like to give a heartfelt thank you to all the [Newton] responders." In March of 2016, an SUV drove through an intersection and into the front of the eatery at dinnertime, killing two people and injuring seven others; because of the accident, crash-resistant safety bollards are now set up outside the dining spot as protection against this happening again.

Other locations of Sweet Tomatoes can be found in Newton Centre, Needham, and at Northeastern University in Boston. The website for all of the shops is at http://sweettomatoespizza.com/

Earlier this month, we had also mentioned that the West Newton shop was possibly going to be expanding into the space next door, though this did not come up in the interview.
