Uptown Social Opens in Boston's South End

A highly-anticipated soul food spot has debuted in Boston.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Uptown Social is now open in the city's South End, moving into the space on Columbus Avenue where Darryl's Corner Bar & Kitchen had been until closing in late 2023, and before that, The Stork Club, Circle, Bob's Southern Bistro and Bob The Chef's. As mentioned in an earlier article here, Nia Grace (who was involved with Darryl's and who also runs Grace by Nia in the Seaport District) is behind the new restaurant, which focuses on Southern comfort food and cocktails while also featuring live music.

Maxine's On Saint James in Roxbury Has Closed

It looks like a Southern-style dining spot in a Boston neighborhood has shut down.

According to a source, Maxine's On Saint James in Roxbury is no longer in business, with a check on the website for the Dudley Street place indicating that the site has been taken down, and we have been told that a new Latin American eatery called Grace's is apparently open in its space, though little information is available for that spot. Maxine's offered such items as potato salad, jambalaya, etouffee, fried boneless pork chops, wings, macaroni and cheese, red beans and rice, banana pudding, and bread pudding.

Southern Kin Cookhouse at Assembly Row in Somerville Is Closing; New Location Apparently on the Way

A Southern-style restaurant in Somerville will soon be saying farewell to its home, though it looks like it will be reborn in a new location at some point.

According to a source, Southern Kin Cookhouse at Assembly Row is getting ready to close its doors, with its social media pages mentioning a "friendly/bittersweet reminder that our Assembly Row location will close 7/27. Make the most of it & visit us there until we relocate" while another post says "Come visit us at our Assembly Row location one last time! New spot coming soon!" It is not yet known where the new location will be, so keep checking back for updates as they come in.

Southern Kin Cookhouse first opened in 2016, offering such options as buttermilk biscuits, grilled cornbread, chicken and waffles, gumbo, fried catfish, shrimp and grits, country fried steak, ribs, macaroni and cheese, dirty rice, and pecan pie along with beer, wine, and cocktails.

Kitchen + Kocktails by Kevin Kelley Plans to Open in the Former Nusr-et Steakhouse Space in Boston's Back Bay

It looks like a small group of southern comfort food restaurants with roots in Texas could be expanding to Boston.

According to a licensing board hearing page within the city's website, Kitchen + Kocktails by Kevin Kelley is looking to open in the Back Bay, moving into the space on Arlington Street that had previously been home to Nusr-et Steakhouse. If approved, the new location would join the original restaurant in Dallas along with others in Chicago, Washington, DC, Charlotte, and Atlanta, and based on those locations, some of the offerings could include such items as fried green tomatoes, seafood gumbo, southern fried chicken, pork chops, chicken fried steak, shrimp and grits, fried catfish, chicken and waffles, and fried okra.

Nusret Gökçe (AKA Salt Bae) first opened the Boston location of Nusr-et Steakhouse in 2020, taking over the space where Nahita had been, and before that, Liquid Art House.

The Porch Southern Fare & Juke Joint in Medford Is Closing

A Southern restaurant that is known in part for its live music is shutting down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, The Porch Southern Fare & Juke Joint in Medford is closing its doors, with a Facebook post from the place saying the following:

It's been real, Boston! Our last day of full service will be July 21. Our last concert will be on July 26 with Big Sandy & his Fly Rite Boys. We sincerely appreciate all the good times you've shared with us over the last 8 years.

The Porch first opened in Wakefield Center in 2016, moving to its present home on Rivers Edge Drive in Medford in 2019 where it has hosted countless rock, blues, jazz, bluegrass, funk, soul, and indie acts while featuring regional cuisines of the South.

The Purple Pig Opens in Marlborough

A new dining spot in MetroWest that focuses on Texas-style BBQ and Southern comfort food has opened.

According to a source (Gary Goldblatt). The Purple Pig is now open in Marlborough, moving into a space in the Twinboro Plaza on Route 20 by the Northborough line. The menu for the place--which focuses on takeout and catering--includes such items as chili, wings, burnt ends, smoked pastrami panini, crispy chicken waffle, smash burgers, a brisket sandwich, chicken and sausage jambalaya, pulled pork macaroni and cheese, ribs, Cajun rice, and corn pudding.

A La Esh Is Returning to Sharon

A suburban dining spot that focused on BBQ items with influences ranging from Israel to the American South is being reborn.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, A La Esh is returning to its former home in Sharon, which had been home to a location of Hummus v'Hummus once A La Esh said farewell in the fall of 2022. A Facebook post from the business says "Stay tuned" while showing a new menu that includes such items as lamb chili, brisket sandwiches, pulled pork sandwiches, kebabs, smash burgers, smoked salmon, tacos, smoked hummus, macaroni and cheese, and more.

The first incarnation of A La Esh opened next to Simcha in the Sharon Heights Shopping Plaza on South Main Street in the fall of 2020, with Avi Shemtov being behind both places along with Hummus v'Hummus (which now focuses on catering) and The Chubby Chickpea, a food truck and catering operation that was established in Canton in 2010.

Rivershed in Weymouth Landing Has Closed; Tres Burros Hopes to Open in Space

A second location of a South Shore restaurant has shut down, and a new dining spot could replace it, though plans for that space are now in question.

According to an article in the Patriot Ledger, Rivershed in Weymouth Landing is no longer in operation, though a check on its original location in Scituate indicates that it remains in operation. The article mentions that the people behind Liberty Tavern in Quincy have been hoping to open Tres Burros in the space, though it isn't a sure thing because the planning board wants to limit the seating to 88 due to a lack of parking and the lawyer for the prospective owners says they might decide against moving forward with the plans if they aren't allowed to have more seating. The issue is slated to be looked at further in a meeting on February 27.

Rivershed first opened in Weymouth Landing in the fall of 2020, offering Southern-style fare including chili, fried pickles, po'boys, macaroni and cheese, chicken and waffles, and salmon.

Soleil in Roxbury Has Closed

A Southern-style restaurant in Roxbury has closed after being in business for a bit under six years.

According to multiple sources, Soleil in Nubian Square is no longer in business, with Eater Boston confirming (via the restaurant's website) that the Washington Street spot is shuttered--and the closing follows the shutting down of Soleil's outpost at Boston Public Market last spring. Soleil, which first opened in the spring of 2018, was known for such options as fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, brisket, turkey wings, po'boys, and more.

Darryl's Corner Bar & Kitchen in Boston's South End to Close December 31; Will Be Rebranded

A Southern-style restaurant that is known in part for its live music will soon be shutting down for the time being, as it gets ready for a rebranding.

According to a source (Gary Goldblatt), Darryl's Corner Bar & Kitchen in the South End of Boston is closing its doors temporarily on December 31, with a note on the website of the Columbus Avenue spot saying the following:

For over 65 years we have shared in the joys, triumphs, and milestones of hundreds of thousands of guests. We've been a place where stories were told, friendships were forged, and history was made. As we approach the end of this year, we find ourselves standing at the crossroads of a bittersweet farewell and an exciting new beginning. After careful consideration and heartfelt reflection, we have decided to embark on a brief hiatus to breathe new life into our beloved establishment. This decision stems from our commitment to preserving the rich legacy we've built over the past decades and ensuring that we continue to offer an exceptional experience to our cherished patrons for generations to come....As we bid farewell to this chapter, we carry with us the memories of Bob and Dottie Morgan, the stewardship of Darryl Settles, and the vivacity infused by Nia Grace. The corner may be changing, but the spirit of connection and shared moments will endure.

A Facebook post adds to this, mentioning "an exciting period of rebranding and expansion" as does an Instagram post from Darryl's owner Nia Grace, though no specific details have been given as of yet.

Darryl's Corner Bar & Kitchen, which first opened in 2010, resides in a space that has been home to several spots, including The Stork Club, Circle, Bob's Southern Bistro and Bob The Chef's.

Soleil in Roxbury Expands to Boston Public Market

The person behind a Southern-style restaurant in Roxbury has opened a second location at an indoor marketplace in downtown Boston.

According to an article from Eater Boston, Soleil is now open at Boston Public Market, joining the original location in Nubian Square which chef/owner Cheryl Straughter opened in 2018. The new outlet offers such options as macaroni and cheese, collard greens, fried chicken, brisket, turkey wings, a Nashville-style hot chicken sandwich, banana pudding, and more.

Eater Boston mentions that Boston Public Market, which first opened in 2015, now has nearly 30 vendors.

Popeyes Opens in Woburn

A new location of a chain of chicken spots has come to the local area after being in the works for about a year and a half.

According to a source (Aron Levy), Popeyes is now open in Woburn, moving into the former D'Angelo space on Mishawum Road. The new location of the Florida-based chain join others in the Greater Boston area by Northeastern University, Roslindale, Roxbury, West Roxbury, Brockton, Chelmsford, Everett, Lawrence, Lynn, Randolph, and Quincy.

Popeyes is known for its fast food items with Louisiana influences, including fried chicken, biscuits, red beans and rice, green beans, popcorn shrimp, and fried pickles.

50Kitchen in Dorchester's Fields Corner Is Closing

A Dorchester restaurant that features fusion fare is going to be shutting down.

Eater Boston is reporting that 50Kitchen in Fields Corner is closing its doors next month, with an Instagram post from the Dorchester Avenue spot saying the following:

This was a difficult decision to make, but a necessary one. We understand that many of our fans will be sad to hear this news, but we would not like to focus on the negatives. Although we are sad that we will soon close our doors, we are grateful for what we were able to do and accomplish in just two years. A small restaurant in Dorchester was able to be part of some really big things, and give back in some really important ways. It is thanks to this community that we were able to share our story with thousands of people, whether at our restaurant, in interviews, or on Chopped. It was thanks to our customers that we were able to stay open and help provide meals to those in need throughout this pandemic. We want to say thanks to every article writer, food blogger, social media sharer, and every single customer and supporter that kept coming into our restaurant to share a smile and enjoy some good food. This is not the end of our story, but merely the end of this chapter of it.

50Kitchen first opened in the early part of 2020, offering southern-style cuisine with Asian influences. Toast! All Day to Expand to Boston

It looks like an award-winning group of restaurants based in the Southeast may be on its way to the local area.

Based on information from a source, the Charleston Hospitality Group is planning to expand to Boston, with a post from the mountpleasantchamber.org site mentioning that Toast! All Day is opening somewhere in the city, saying that it is "now proudly a national franchise with 5 locations in Charleston with Savannah, Greenville, Atlanta, Miami and Boston opening 2021/2022." According to the restaurant's website, Toast! All Day has been "hailed as a must-eat by the NY Times" and "awarded the 2021 Top 25 Best Brunches in the US by Tripadvisor."

Nash Bar & Stage Is Opening in the Former Abby Lane Space in Boston's Theater District

A few months ago, it was reported that a restaurant in the Theater District of Boston might be opening this fall after being closed since late last year, and now we have learned that a new concept will be coming to the space.

According to a series of tweets from @amysalv from last month, a new awning is now up at the site of Abby Lane on Tremont Street that shows the word "Nashville" while an Instagram page indicates that the upcoming spot will be called Nash Bar & Stage and that it will be bringing "a lil bit of Nashville to Boston." A page within the bostonchefs.com site shows the address for Nash Bar & Stage as being the same as Abby Lane while also mentioning local restaurateur/celebrity chef Jason Santos (and his Buttermilk & Bourbon Restaurant Group), confirming that the concept change will indeed be taking place at the site

Abby Lane, which first opened in 2012, shut down as of November of 2020, as Santos told us at the time that the lack of a patio along with no theatergoers in the area both played a role in the decision.

Fresh Food Generation Is Opening Near Dorchester's Codman Square

The people behind a food truck and catering business will be opening a restaurant in a section of Boston that has relatively few options for sit-down dining.

According to an article from the Dorchester Reporter, Cassandria Campbell and Jackson Renshaw are opening Fresh Food Generation on the outskirts of Codman Square, with the Talbot Avenue dining spot planning to have eight seats inside and approximately 20 to 30 more seats outdoors. The food offerings at the upcoming place will have Caribbean and Southern influences, with some of the options including a kale salad, Jamaican jerk chicken, red bean stew, salmon, rice plates, and more, while they also plan to offer beer and wine.

In addition to setting up a food truck at various spots in the city, Campbell and Renshaw have also been running a catering company within CommonWealth Kitchen in Grove Hall; it looks like they will ultimately be basing their operation out of 191 Talbot Avenue in Codman Square while their restaurant appears to be going into a space at 185 Talbot Avenue, based on information from the article.

A Facebook post from the place says that "We have the same classic shed menu [and] 20 tapped kegs" and it indicates that it will be open for lunch and dinner, with the menu showing such items as fried pickles, gumbo, poutine, macaroni and cheese, pulled pork, brisket, burgers, blackened swordfish, steak tips, ribs, and more.

Buttermilk & Bourbon Is Opening at Arsenal Yards in East Watertown

A well-known local chef and restaurateur who recently opened a seafood spot on the North Shore will also be opening a second location of a Southern-influenced restaurant he opened in Boston a few years ago, with this one coming to a new development by the Charles River.

According to a press release, Jason Santos is planning to open a new location of Buttermilk & Bourbon at Arsenal Yards in East Watertown, joining the original on Commonwealth Avenue in the Back Bay. Once the new outlet opens, expect New Orleans-inspired cuisine along with a wide variety of bourbons and other spirits as well as beer, wine, and cocktails.

In addition to Buttermilk & Bourbon, Santos is also behind Citrus & Salt and Abby Lane in Boston and the new B&B Fish in Marblehead, and he is also known for being on the Fox reality TV show Hell's Kitchen ten years back along with other shows.

If all goes as planned, the new location of Buttermilk & Bourbon will open in 2021.

The Frogmore in Jamaica Plain Is Closing for Good

A Southern-style restaurant in Jamaica Plain is saying farewell.

According to multiple sources, The Frogmore on the Blessed Sacrament Campus on Centre Street is shutting down permanently, with a Facebook post from the place indicating that it will be open from Wednesday through Sunday of this week before closing its doors. No reason has been given for its closure, nor is it known what might become of the space, so keep checking back for updates.

The Frogmore first opened in the summer of 2015, taking over the space where Centre Street Sanctuary had been. Its menu mostly features the lowcountry cuisine of South Carolina, including such items as grilled okra, fried chicken, succotash, smoked ribs, and cornbread. The people behind The Frogmore were also connected with the now-closed Fairsted Kitchen in Brookline's Washington Square.
